BEAUMONT TX. OCT. 11, 2007

An incident which started as a report of petty theft turned into a second-degree felony when a suspected shoplifter started to fight, according to police reports.
Employees of the Family Dollar at 4017 Magnolia St. said they saw a woman putting items into her purse Monday morning and called police, according to the police report. The woman tried to leave the store before police arrived and employees confronted her, the report stated.
When approached, the woman began to fight, spitting and scratching at the employees. When police arrived, they arrested the woman and charged her with aggravated robbery, a second-degree felony punishable by 20 years in jail.Taking the items in question, hair curlers and some clothing, would have constituted only misdemeanor theft. However, the fighting brought the charge up to the felony offense, police said.
Amber Pitre, 20, was at the Jefferson County Correctional Facility Tuesday night in lieu of a $25,000 bond set on an aggravated robbery charge.
