Acworth Ga. Dec. 21, 2007 An Acworth police officer whose police dog died of heat stroke after being left in a patrol car has been charged with violating the city’s cruelty to animals ordinance and removed from the K-9 unit.
Acworth Police spokesman Captain Wayne Dennard says Lieutenant Curtis Endicott also paid a $256.25 fine yesterday in municipal court.
Violating the city ordinance is a misdemeanor. Police Chief Michael Wilkie consulted with the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office, but no felony charges were brought against Endicott.
But Dennard says Endicott’s removal from the K-9 unit means a decrease of $10,000 to his annual pay and the loss of his take-home police car.
The dog died September 3 after Endicott got distracted while switching electronic equipment from one patrol car to another. Endicott was called inside the police station and returned to the patrol car later to find the dog dead.
The police dog was a 6-year-old Belgian Malinois named Marco and was trained to detect narcotics and track missing people.
Endicott will retain his job as a shift commander and his rank.
