2Ala. Officers Arrested for Drugs www.privateofficer.com

2 Ala. Officers Arrested For Drugs www.privateofficer.com

Mobile AL Feb 7 2008
Two Mobile police officers were arrested Wednesday on drug and theft charges following a week-long internal investigation, authorities said.
Desmond Brooks, 28, was charged with two felony counts of possession of a controlled substance and theft of lost property, and one misdemeanor count of possession of marijuana — items Chief Phillip Garrett said he believes Brooks obtained while working.
A second officer, Aaron Porter, 32, was charged with one felony count of possession of a controlled substance.
The officers’ arrests follow an internal affairs investigation that began after Garrett received a tip that Brooks was involved in illegal activity, the chief said.
Garrett said a search warrant was executed Wednesday at Brook’s Theodore home, where police discovered crack cocaine, marijuana and more than $300.
Porter was arrested shortly after Brooks, police spokeswoman Nancy Johnson said. He was also found to be in possession of crack cocaine, Johnson said.
“This brings … discredit to what we do for a living,” Garrett said. “It’s not something you think of a police officer as being able to do.”
There was no indication, however, that either Brooks or Porter were using or selling the drugs, Garrett said.
The men, who worked together at Precinct 3, have been suspended until an internal administrative hearing is held, Johnson said.
Brooks has been an officer with the department for more than eight years, Johnson said, and Porter joined the force less than a year ago.
Garrett said he had not received complaints prior to last week’s tip.
“It was a total surprise to me,” he said.
Both men were booked into the Mobile County Metro Jail Wednesday, and the amounts of their bail were not immediately available.
District Attorney John Tyson Jr., who was apprised of the investigation Wednesday morning, said it’s too early to say what penalties the pair might face if convicted.
However, he said, the penalty for each Class C felony is one to 10 years in jail.

80 Year Old Charged With Murder www.privateofficer.com

80 Year Old Charged With Murder www.privateofficer.com

WRIGHTSVILLE, Ga. Feb 7 2008 — Authorities have charged an 80-year-old middle Georgia man with murder after they say he shot his sister’s live-in boyfriend to death.
Officers arrested Charlie David Turner of Montezuma after the shooting on Tuesday. Greg Harvey is special agent in charge of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Eastman office. He says Turner is being held in the Johnson County Jail.
Harvey says Turner was visiting his sister and her boyfriend, Cecil Conway, at a home in Wrightsville around 3 p.m. Tuesday when an argument began.
Harvey says the 52-year-old Conway was shot two or three times with what authorities believe was a .22-caliber revolver.
Conway was pronounced dead at the scene.
Harvey says authorities are not sure what the men were fighting about. He says Turner owned his sister’s house.
Wrightsville is about 54 miles southeast of Macon.

By Day; a factory worker, By Night; A Robber And Killer www.privateofficer.com

By Day; A factory worker, By Night; A seasoned criminal www.privateofficer.com

MURFREESBORO TN. (Metro-Nashville) Feb 7 2008
The man accused of killing an assistant manager at a Murfreesboro O’Charley’s during a robbery has a history of robbing restaurants, police told the media on Wednesday.
Antonio Danzelle Alexander, 45, of Smyrna Tenn., was arrested Wednesday morning at his place of employment on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated robbery.
He is accused of shooting and killing Nader Bahmanziari, 41, an assistant manager at the O’Charley’s on Memorial Boulevard early Sunday while robbing the restaurant.
Police say that he is no stranger to crime and no stranger to the justice system. In fact he’s been an active player in the system for many years police say.
According to authorities, Alexander has served time for the 1997 armed robbery of a Davidson County restaurant. At the time of that robbery, he was already on parole for a robbery in Rutherford County.
Tennessee Bureau of Investigations spokeswoman Kristin Helm said Alexander spent time on the TBI’s most-wanted list after the Davidson County robbery, but he was later apprehended in Georgia.
Alexander also has been arrested on charges ranging from being a felon in possession of a handgun to sale of cocaine, according to the TBI.
After aan around the clock investigation of the robbery gone bad by city police and several other agencies, Alexander was arrested about 8 a.m. Wednesday at International Paper Co. in Murfreesboro, where he works. Company officials said he had been employed there since 2006 but declined further comment.
Alexander was being held without bond Wednesday at the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center. He is due in Rutherford County General Sessions Court on March 18.

Police have said Bahmanziari was in the manager’s office counting money, preparing for the next day of business, when the robbery occurred.
Police also believe Bahmanziari complied with the robber’s demands, so it’s unclear what prompted the suspect to open fire.
“We hope this arrest will be the beginning of the closure process for the family. Murfreesboro and Rutherford County are a safer place with this man behind bars,” Murfreesboro police spokesman Kyle Evans said.
Bahmanziari, a 15-year employee of O’Charley’s, was married and had two children. His funeral is at 2 p.m. today at Murfreesboro Funeral Home.
Evidence at the scene and information from the community led police to Alexander, Evans said.
“Once (Alexander) became a suspect, the pieces began to fall into place,” he said. “It became obvious that this man, Alexander, was the person who committed the crime.”
Evans said he could not discuss the details of the evidence or the investigation.
Police believe Alexander was the only person actively involved in the robbery and shooting, Evans said.
He credited the hard work of the Criminal Investigations team led by Detective John Singleton with Alexander’s arrest.
“We are doing everything we can to assure the prosecution of this case,” Evans said.

Court rules Cleveland must keep airport police www.privateofficer.com

Court Rules cleveland Airport Must Keep Police www.privateofficer.com

Cleveland Oh. Feb 7, 2008
Mayor Frank Jackson has lost a battle with the city’s police unions over replacing 45 officers at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport with a private security force.
Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Nancy A. Fuerst ruled Wednesday that the city’s plan conflicts with state law because the security officers would be given arrest powers.
In a 12-page ruling, Fuerst stated that state law does not allow the city to give police authority to a private company.
Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association President Steve Loomis applauded the decision. “Removing the police from the airport would have put the airport and the region at risk,” he said.
City Law Director Robert Triozzi said he will appeal. “We believe the law allows us to do this,” he said.
Jackson first proposed moving the officers from Hopkins to the streets last August, after weeks of criticism from residents and the media for not doing enough about violent crime.
The mayor said the move was part of a broader safety plan that included putting more police cars in circulation by assigning officers to drive alone rather than with partners.
Although union and city officials disagree over what to do about the airport, they agree on the need for more officers on the street.
Jackson has budgeted for 1,645 officers, but the soonest he can reach that goal is late August because it takes recruits six months to complete the city’s police academy.
The city currently has fewer than 1,560 officers. And that number is likely to go down before it goes up.
On average, six officers retire or resign every month.
The city has 64 recruits scheduled to complete their training in April; another class could graduate at the end of August.
Loomis argues that the mayor could fill the gap in the meantime by hiring officers from other departments.
