Mother killed by son with AK-47 rifle www.privateofficer.com

HALL COUNTY, Ga. (metro Atlanta) Feb 20, 2008 — A Gainesville woman is dead after being shot by her son. Mary Bailey, 52, was sleeping nearby when her son discharged his AK-47 early Tuesday morning.
Hall County Sheriff’s authorities said the case is still under investigation but based on their preliminary investigation, they said it appears to be an accident.
“To make a long story short, I shot my mother,” Derrick Bailey told Channel 2’s Rachel Kim.
Derrick Bailey, 19, said out of boredom, he began to clean his AK-47 around 2 a.m. Tuesday. His mother, Mary, was sleeping on a sofa nearby.
“It was like a removing of the clip, then I placed it on the side. She was on the right side, and in my attempts to hold onto it, it went off. I didn’t even know it was loaded,” said Derrick.
The gun went off and hit Mary in the upper body.
“She told me to call 911 so that’s what I did. Naturally, I was trying to keep her with me, keep her alive,” said Derrick.
Mary was rushed to the hospital but died of her injuries a short time later.
“I’m sorry about what happened,” said Derrick. Mary’s son said it’s difficult to accept what has happened but he’ll always remember her for her love and character.
The sheriff’s office told area reporters that toxicology tests are being conducted. When the results come back, authorities will present the case to the DA for a final review.

The Doctor “Does” Make House Calls www.privateofficer.com

The Doctor “Does” Make House Calls www.privateofficer.com

Shelby County Ala. Feb 20, 2008 There is no secretary involved. No need to worry that you’ll catch what the person next to you is coughing into the air. And, if you feel so bad that a messy ponytail and pajamas is all you can manage, you don’t have to worry about seeing someone from high school in the waiting room.Dr. Gary Bullock began making house calls around Shelby County last summer.”It started off with me just taking care of our friends and their kids. Then I began realizing I was getting called more frequently and so I just began pack-ratting supplies in a gym bag,” Bullock said of how he got started making an old practice new.For some patients, the benefit of house calls is obvious. Mark Partain said he enjoys the convenience and the personal relationship.”It’s just so unusually cool,” Partain said. “There is an ease of talking to someone in your own house and you are able to open up more about the problems you are having.”Partain said Bullock mainly helps him with cholesterol problems. He said by having more time with the doctor, the two of them often think of alternatives to treating his cholesterol, rather than using medication. Sometimes staying longer also means eventually treating other family members.”When you sit down with one person in the family, you also get a picture of the whole family,” Bullock said. “Rarely do you leave without helping another member of the family.”Many families use his service for after-hour needs. Bullock got a call from a concerned grandmother on Christmas Eve. Her grandbaby was running a high fever and pulling on his ear.Bullock said the family knew it wasn’t serious enough to go to the emergency room, but they did have plans to get on a plane back home in just days, so Bullock treated the child for the fever and ear infection right in their home.Partain said the personal attention eliminates frustration he feels when a doctor zips in and out of a visit.”Everybody hates to go to the doctor. You hear that file slap the door and you wonder how long it will be till you actually see the doctor,” Partain said. “He (Bullock) gets to know you, so you don’t have to tell your story twice, and he stays as long as you need him to so that he can treat the whole person.”Bullock said the benefits for him come from having less office overhead and more time to really help his patients.”It costs an office tremendously to slow down and do the things really needed to prevent 75 percent of the diseases that makeup healthcare costs in our country,” Bullock said.”When I make a house call, I can sit there and say “not only do you have bronchitis, but let’s get into actual behaviors such as diet and exercise.’”Bullock has yet to advertise his service much, but he is trying to prepare for what he thinks is a growing market – personalized healthcare.

Sex Offender Flees With 4 Year Old www.privateofficer.com

Sex Offender Flees With 4 Year Old Daughter www.privateofficer.com

GAINESVILLE, Ga. (Metro Atlanta) Feb 20 2008 — A former teacher who was out on bond on child molestation charges is now being sought be authorities after disappearing with his 4-year-old daughter.
Jerry Jones disappeared early Saturday with his daughter, Madison Kerr.
Jones, a former Gainesville Elementary School teacher, was arrested in December on child molestation charges. Now he is the subject of a manhunt and his estranged wife, Rene Kerr, fears the worst.
“I do not think he would lay a hand on her, but he’s wanted on federal arrest warrants,” Kerr said. “When they catch him, it’s not going to be nice. There will be guns, there will be force — he’s putting her in harm’s way. He’s not acting rationally. When you’re making irrational decisions, you’re not thinking about what would be best for those around you or how to keep them safe.”
Jones was released on bond Jan. 8 with several conditions, including only supervised visits with his daughter.
He knew Friday that he was going to be arrested for violating the conditions of his bond, Hall County District Attorney Lee Darragh said. Darragh would not say how Jones violated the bond, but said the offense did not involve Madison.
Knowing he soon would go to jail, Jones arranged to visit with Madison at his sister’s house in Forsyth County.
Kerr had planned to divorce Jones before he was arrested, but does not believe he is guilty of molesting children.
“He’s never talked about running,” Kerr said. “But he’s talked repeatedly about not wanting to go back to jail. He loves his daughter and spending time with her. Being there means not being able to do that.”
Jones and Madison were last seen in a 1996 White Ford Taurus with Georgia Wildlife tag BW6 B02, red paint or ink streaks on the passenger-side rear bumper and anti-abortion bumper stickers.
Authorities do not consider the case kidnapping because Jones is Madison’s custodial parent.

Coast guard launches program aimed at publics help www.privateofficer.com

Coast Guard launches program aimed at publics help www.privateofficer.com

SEATTLE WA Feb 20 2008 — The U.S. Coast Guard has launched a program that relies solely on the public’s help in spotting suspicious activities on the waterways. The anti-terrorism program named America’s Water Watch operates by following up on tips from the public. The Coast Guard is is asking the public to keep an eye out and report anything unusual to the tip line by dialing 1-877-24-WATCH. After working around the docks for 20 years, Richard Nucci can pick out the fishermen from the tourists. He can also spot the people who seem out of place. “I had a couple of times when a guy was trying to crawl over the side of my boat when I was on the other side. (He) didn’t know I was there and (I) said, ‘what are you doing?’ And the guy jumped off, and they took off,” he said. “They were looking to steal stuff. A lot of it comes in by the water.”From the ship canals to major ports along the thousands of miles of coastline in the Northwest, many suspicious activities go unreported. In an attempt to learn more about these incidents, the Coast Guard has unveiled a new program that relies solely on tips. “The whole idea is to adjudicate it, to figure out whether it is something seriously suspicious of a terrorist-related activity, or just a security-related activity, or to push it up for further investigation,” said Capt. Stephen Metruck with the U.S. Coast Guard. The Coast Guard, the FBI, the Washington State Patrol and local police departments will team up to follow up on the calls. But Capt. Mark Thomas with the Washington State Patrol says the law enforcement officials do not presume the reported individuals are guilty until proven innocent. “We just want to be able to talk to them, engage them in conversation and make sure there’s nothing we need to know about that requires additional investigation,” he said. The Coast Guard and the FBI urge members of the public to call the tip line if they see anything out of the ordinary. Callers can also dial 911.

Airport police overlook growing homeless problem www.privateofficer.com

Airport police overlook growing homeless problem www.privateofficer.com

PHILADELPHIA PA. Feb 20 2008 — There’s a problem at Philadelphia International Airport, and this isn’t about baggage or flight delays.
It’s about the unofficial welcoming committee greeting passengers.
Philadelphia International Airport is often the first and last place visitors see, and what they’re seeing late at night isn’t always a pretty picture, Lu Ann Cahn reported.
The airport smells. It smells like homeless people,” said frequent flier Joel Brazy.
There are urine stains on the wall. Police said some of the homeless defecate where they sleep and you later sit.
“I would imagine that the police officers would chase them out,” one female traveler said.
But airport police told Cahn that it’s a problem they can do little about.
On one night, Philadelphia affliate NBC 10 cameras find about a dozen homeless people in baggage Terminal B, and Cahn said she was told that, on some nights, they fill every seat there.
“I mean it’s better than them freezing outside,” a young, female flier said.
“By the grace of God go I,” said a male traveler.
There’s compassion. There’s also concern about what this says about Philadelphia.
“To have as many homeless as we have here is really kind of an embarrassment,” Brazy said. “This is the only airport I’ve seen in the country — and, for that matter, almost anywhere in the world — that has homeless people wandering around.”
“I think they should worry about their own business,” said 18-year-old Doug Ryan, who believes he’s the newest homeless person to arrive at the airport.
“It’s warm. It’s warm, they don’t kick you out, so it’s not the worst place,” Ryan said.
“What are you doing for food?” Cahn asked.
“Trash cans,” Ryan answered. “As you can see, there’s like a pretzel store right there. Some people throw away their food, and I’ll eat it.”
Airport officials refused to talk about the problem on camera, but they have put money into it. The NBC 10 Investigators have learned the airport spends $150,000 a year to deal with its homeless population.
“Is there any evidence that the $150,000 is succeeding in some way, doing something?” Cahn asked.
“That’s a good question,” replied Gary Brown, a spokesman for the city’s Department of Behavioral Health.
Brown said the money pays for contracted outreach workers to counsel homeless at the airport about five times a week. They can encourage the homeless to go to shelters, but they can’t force them to leave. And neither can police.
“So the only way someone would have the authority to move them would be if they were a danger to themselves or others?” Cahn asked.
“That’s my opinion,” Brown said. “The bottom line is people who are homeless need permanent housing solutions.”
“It’s just not appropriate. That’s not who we are and what we’re about,” said Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter. “If we have a heart, we’re going to extend our hand and make sure that people get the services they need to get off the streets or out of the airport.”
“Someone told me today, like, ‘You smell bad,’” Ryan said.
Still, Ryan said he likes the airport of brotherly love.
Asked if he thinks it gives Philadelphia a bad image, Ryan answered, “No. It’s Philadelphia. Have you, like, seen Philadelphia’s streets? They’re not the best.”

TSA officer, Delta employees indicted for drugs www.privateofficer.com

TSA officer, Delta employees indicted for drug smuggling www.privateofficer.com

Atlanta GA. Feb 20 2008 A Delta employee and two Transportation Security Administration employees have been indicted on charges relating to a drug-smuggling operation at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the U.S. Attorney’s Office reported Tuesday.
Leslie Adgar, 42, of Decatur, Ga., Andre Mays, 24, of Atlanta, and Jon Patton, 44, of Lawrenceville, Ga., were indicted by a federal grand jury after a sting operation set up by the federal government. The indictment charges Patton and Adgar with conspiring to distribute narcotics and attempting to distribute cocaine and heroin on three dates drugs were smuggled through Hartsfield-Jackson to New York. Mays is charged with the drug conspiracy and attempting to distribute cocaine on Dec. 19, 2007. The charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison and a fine of up to $4 million.
According to the indictment and information presented in court, Patton and Mays are TSA employees working at Hartsfield-Jackson. Adgar is a Delta Airlines (NYSE: DAL) employee, also assigned to Hartsfield-Jackson. In December 2007, a confidential source working for the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) brokered a deal with TSA employee Patton to send two kilograms of cocaine through Hartsfield-Jackson to New York. Patton set transportation fees of $5,000 for the first kilogram of cocaine and $3,000 for every kilogram after. Patton allegedly provided the source with a piece of luggage that was later used to carry the two kilograms of cocaine past security and onto the Delta flight.
On Dec. 19, 2007, at the direction of the DEA, the source met with Patton and a second TSA employee, Mays, at Hartsfield-Jackson and handed them a carry-on bag packed with two kilograms of fake cocaine and $4,000. Both Patton and Mays were in TSA uniform and on duty at Hartsfield-Jackson when they took the luggage. The $4,000 was one-half of the total $8,000 transportation fee; the plan was for the source to hand the second $4,000 to Adgar in New York when the sham drugs were delivered.
After taking the source’s bag, Patton and Mays went into a bathroom in Hartsfield-Jackson’s North Terminal. About two minutes later, Patton was seen inside the bathroom standing outside of a closed bathroom stall talking to Mays in the stall. Patton no longer had the bag. Mays was not visible, but the bag was on the floor inside the stall outside of which Patton was standing. Patton and Mays then exited the bathroom together. Patton once again was carrying the bag. Mays, who had entered the bathroom with his coat open, now had his coat closed. Mays was next spotted on the other side of the security check point.
Patton allegedly walked around the magnetometers, sending the bag through the x-ray machine. Patton and the bag were not challenged by TSA screeners. Patton retrieved the bag and eventually met with Adgar in the T concourse, giving her the bag. Adgar immediately boarded a Delta flight to New York’s LaGuardia Airport.
After arriving at LaGuardia, Adgar met with the source, who paid Adgar the remaining $4,000 of the smuggling fee. Adgar allegedly gave the source his bag with the two kilograms of fake cocaine. Adgar later boarded another Delta flight and came back to Atlanta.
In late January, the source and Patton negotiated a second smuggling transaction. On Jan. 23, the source traveled to Hartsfield-Jackson and gave Patton with the same carry-on bag that was used in the December deal. This time, however, the bag was packed with one kilogram of fake heroin and $4,500. Patton was in uniform and on duty when he took the luggage.
After taking the bag, Patton allegedly passed the heroin through the security checkpoint without notice. He then went near Gate T-8 and gave Adgar the bag. Adgar then boarded a Delta flight bound for LaGuardia Airport. After arriving in New York, Adgar deplaned and returned the bag with the sham heroin in it to the source. In exchange, the source handed Adgar the remaining $4,500. Adgar later boarded a Delta flight from New York to Orlando.
A third and final transaction happened Feb. 15. The source and Patton negotiated a three-kilogram cocaine deal, again from Atlanta to New York. The source arrived at Hartsfield-Jackson and gave Patton with the same carry-on bag that had been used in the previous two deals. The bag was packed with three kilograms of fake cocaine and cash. Patton was again in TSA uniform and on duty at Hartsfield-Jackson when he took the luggage. Patton allegedly passed the fake cocaine through security without incident. Inside the airport, Patton provided Adgar with the bag. Adgar was arrested by DEA agents while attempting to board a Delta flight to LaGuardia Airport. Patton and Mays were arrested shortly thereafter.
“These individuals allegedly abused their positions at Hartsfield-Jackson Airport to smuggle drugs past security and onto Delta flights,” said U.S. Attorney David E. Nahmias. “This indictment should serve as a cautionary tale for others who would betray the trust that the public places in the frontline workers at our nation’s airports: such illegal conduct will be discovered and the offenders swiftly brought to justice.”

Father kills daughter over text message www.privateofficer.com

NEW YORK Feb 20 2008 – A father who said he was upset with his teenage daughter for text-messaging a boy has been arrested on charges of killing the girl, whose burned body was found stuffed in the boiler of his apartment building, police said.
The 34-year-old man called police Saturday morning, claiming he had strangled his 14-year-old daughter the night before because of the text messaging and had dumped her body in a wooded area, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said.
The girl had been visiting Miguel Matias but lived in Pennsylvania with her mother and two sisters. The parents were separated, and Matias had visitation rights. He had a history of emotional problems and was institutionalized after trying to set a car on fire with children inside in Pennsylvania, Kelly said.
The daughter, believed to be in the car when Matias tried to burn it, was the only child visiting him at the apartment, Kelly said.
Kelly couldn’t say whether the teen was dead before she was stuffed into the boiler, and the medical examiner’s office is to determine the cause of death.
There was no telephone listing for Matias at the address provided by police.

Sarasota Fla. Feb 20 2008 A woman suspected of shoplifting merchandise from Wal-Mart attempted to escape police custody and was tasered Friday evening.
Around 5:30 p.m., police responded to a call concerning two women alleged to have stolen some goods from Wal-Mart. Security staff reported seeing two women — Brittany Renee Smith, 21, of Sarasota, and Tara Michelle Reed, 22, of Venice — selecting shoes from a store display, putting them on their feet, and allegedly walking out of the store without paying for them. Smith allegedly also concealed a sweatshirt and sunglasses in her purse without paying.
Police arrived and handcuffed the women. According to the police report, as the officer proceeded to his patrol car, Smith then attempted to escape by running across the parking lot and slipping one hand out of the handcuff.

School police officer fired for downloading porn www.privateofficer.com

School police officer fired for downloading porn at school www.privateofficer.com

Dublin Oh.(Metro Columbus)Feb 20 2008
Dublin has fired a police officer who downloaded pornographic images while working as a school resource officer for Dublin Scioto High School.
K.C. Jones, an officer for 17 years who was a D.A.R.E. instructor for Dublin schools and Ohio’s D.A.R.E. Officer of the Year in 2004, was fired Friday.
On Oct. 24 Dublin police became aware of pornographic images on city-owned computers and portable drives at the high school.
Jones was removed immediately from the school and was reassigned to plainclothes administrative work at the Dublin Justice Center, pending the completion of the investigation.
Although some of the photographs depicted women dressed as schoolgirls and cheerleaders, all of the subjects appeared to be adults, city officials said.
The investigation found no criminal behavior by the officer but did recommend disciplinary action for improper conduct, according to a Dublin press release.
Fraternal Order of Police Capital City Lodge No. 9, Jones’ union, is representing him.
“We’re looking at the case in depth,” said Jim Gilbert, union president. “We’re deciding whether to move forward and appeal the case with the city.”
If FOP attorneys decide the case is not worth pursuing, the firing will stand. If arbitration is successful, Gilbert said, Jones could be re-instated as an officer.
Jones, 50, admitted that he had used Dublin computers to download pornographic images for six years, at both the school and police headquarters, according to Dublin police records.
Many of the images were stored on the same computers Jones used to give anti-drug/anti-alcohol presentations since 1997, police learned.
