El Paso TX. Feb 23 2008 A police officer was struck by a fleeing vehicle Thursday night in West El Paso before El Paso Police stopped and arrested two in connection with a shoplifting incident.
Fernando Manuel Sanchez, 37, walked into the Dillards store in Sunland Park Mall about 6:40 p.m. Thursday, police said. Sanchez walked out of the store with three purses and three wallets, police said.
A El Paso Police officer working security at the story attempted to to detain Sanchez, who then ran outside where Valarie Rose Rosales, 29, was waiting in a 2005 Nissan Altima, police said. The officer was off-duty but wearing his full police uniform.
As Sanchez entered the car, Rosales drove the car toward the officer and struck him in the leg, police said. The officer was not seriously injured and was able to call in a description of the car.
An officer working near Edgemere and Loop 375 later spotted the vehicle and arrested Sanchez and Rosales.
Sanchez was charged with Evading Arrest and Theft Over $500 Under $1,500. Rosales was charged with Evading Arrest in a Motor Vehicle and Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer.
