A 23-year-old former West Hartford man, a suspect in a sexual assault and a bank robbery in West Hartford, was shot and killed in Hartford Monday after leading state police on a car chase from Newington and threatening them with a knife, authorities said.
The state troopers involved in the shooting, 14-year veteran Steven Orlowski and 10-year veteran Chick Bistany, were not injured. They have been assigned to administrative duties while an investigation continues, a standard procedure in such shootings. The chase ended near the corner of Russ and Broad streets where state police troopers stopped the suspect’s vehicle, state police said. The man ran from the car and was shot after he pulled a knife, refusing orders to disarm himself, state police said. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots. The area will be closed to traffic into the evening hours while investigators collect evidence and speak to the host of witnesses, said Connecticut State Police Lt. J. Paul Vance. The suspect did not show a weapon or imply that he had one when he robbed the People’s Bank branch at 1232 Farmington Ave at 10:37 a.m. today.A state police trooper spotted a dark green Honda about a half-hour later on Main Street in Newington, near Hartford Avenue. The trooper followed the vehicle, attempting to pull it over. At one point, police said, the suspect struck a car on Fairfield Avenue near White Street, causing a minor injury and damaging the other vehicle. The pursuit ended at the corner of Broad and Russ streets in Hartford, where two state police cruisers succeed in boxing the vehicle. The suspect ditched the car and ran north on Broad for 150 yards, police said. He turned, threatened the troopers with a knife and refused their orders to disarm, Vance said. Both troopers fired their weapons and the suspect was taken to Hartford Hospital where he was pronounced dead, Vance said.
