Security guard arrested for playing cop www.privateofficer.com

POUGHKEEPSIE NY March 19 2008- Detectives of the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office have arrested a Poughkeepsie man for the crime of criminal impersonation in the first degree, a felony.
Joshua Himelstein, 25, a part-time security guard, allegedly impersonated a deputy sheriff while he was a customer at Mahoney’s on Main Street in the City of Poughkeepsie, on January 25, 2008.
Detectives said that while he was a patron, he threatened several customers and employees there. He showed a badge that has since been recovered. The shield appeared very similar to the six point star that deputy sheriffs are issued.
Himelstein is currently employed by the Dutchess County Department of Public Works, and works as an evening security guard at the County Office Complex on Market Street in Poughkeepsie.

Off-duty cop shoots mother, son in road rage www.privateofficer.com

Off duty cop shoots mother, son in road rage incident www.privateofficer.com

OCEANSIDE CA March 18 2008– A woman and her young son were recovering Monday after being shot by an off-duty San Diego police officer in what authorities said was prompted by a road-rage incident.
The officer, Frank White, 28, has been with the San Diego Police Department since October 2005, an Oceanside police spokesman said. White is on routine administrative leave with pay while the incident is investigated.
The shooting occurred about 9:15 p.m. Saturday night in the parking lot of Lowe’s home improvement store on Old Grove Road near state Route 76, Oceanside police said.
The woman, who is in her 20s, and her 8-year-old son were flown to Sharp Memorial Hospital and to Rady Children’s Hospital.
The incident began, police said, when one of the drivers cut the other one off.
“There was some type of right-of-way violation by one party or the other,” Oceanside police Sgt. Kelan Poorman said Monday. He said one of the drivers then apparently followed the other into the parking lot.
It was not clear Monday why the officer fired at the woman’s vehicle. Poorman said White’s wife was with him in the vehicle.
Poorman said he didn’t know if there had been contact between the cars. He also declined to say what type of weapon White had used or how many shots he had fired. The woman was unarmed.
Oceanside police were told that White identified himself as a San Diego police officer at one point during the confrontation, Poorman said.
Police interviewed White on Saturday night and spoke with the woman’s 8-year-old son Monday.
“We’re waiting to talk to the mother so we can put the pieces of the puzzle together,” Poorman said. He said investigators were seeking permission from the woman’s doctors to speak with her.
Poorman said the officer was interviewed at the Oceanside police station with his attorney, a peer support officer and his supervisor.
The Lowe’s store, just south of Route 76, is in a shopping center along with a Ralphs grocery store, a San Diego National Bank branch, a McDonald’s, and several other stores.
Investigators are also still talking with witnesses, Poorman said.
Once they have more information they will determine what, if any charges should be filed, Poorman said. No one has been arrested.
No additional information has been released about the shooting. San Diego Police Chief William Lansdowne said his department would look at the investigation once it’s completed to determine if the officer violated any policies.

Police shoot man in hospital after 5 hr. stand off www.privateofficer.com

BOULDER, Colo. March 18 2008 — Police shot a man in a wheelchair at a Colorado hospital after a five-hour standoff during which he claimed his oxygen tank had a detonator.
Boulder police spokeswoman Sarah Huntley says 32-year-old Terrance Baughman was in surgery Monday after being shot in the chest.
Huntley says officers haven’t been able to deactivate a device on Baughman’s oxygen tank. Police will use a robot to remove the device from the hospital and dismantle it in a nearby park.
The 200-bed Boulder Community Hospital was shut down around 9 a.m. when Baughman said he had the detonator. Patients were moved, and emergency-room patients were taken to other hospitals.

ON THE JOB———Airport Police www.privateofficer.com

ON THE JOB—-Airport Police www.privateofficer.com

Providence RI March 18 2008

By Mary Murphy
The Providence Journal

Patrolman Craig Force tells the story of a couple who were returning from a vacation in Mexico. Apparently the two began fighting on their trip, but it wasn’t until they were back home that the woman decided to slug the man as he waited outside T. F. Green Airport. When Force arrested her on a domestic-violence charge, she told him that she knew her rights would be protected if she waited to hit him on U.S. soil.
When Force retired after 22 years with the Pawtucket police seven years ago, he joined the Rhode Island Airport Police. Force and the other 43 officers of the airport police deal with crimes of domestic violence, illegal weapons, driving under the influence and other offenses, 24 hours a day. Some travelers are so intoxicated that the airport police have to remove them from planes, the sort of people, Force says, who “don’t like being told No.”
And since Sept.11, 2001, Force says, “people still don’t realize they can’t leave their cars parked in front of the airport.” As cars cruise through waiting to pick up arriving passengers and trying to avoid paying for parking, Force and the other patrolmen spend a lot of time keeping the traffic moving past the entrances at the arrival and departure levels.
Patrolling the perimeter of the airport as well as the property that the State Airport Corporation has bought from home owners in the area is also part of the job. Force will hop in one of department’s cars, let the air-traffic control tower know that he is coming onto the perimeter, and follow the fence around the property making sure that there have been no breaks in the fence that is topped with rows of barbed wire. He scans the sky and the runway for incoming and outgoing planes. He always has to be aware of where he is on the field. Every so often he will come across deer or coyotes that have breached the fence, and wild turkeys have been known to come in for a landing.
Chief David Haydon, a state police lieutenant who has been the chief of the airport police since last July, says that his department is proactive. He wants his force visible to make travelers feel secure. With their presence police are promoting community relations, but they are also making arrests. Last year, there were 52 arrests at the airport. So far this year there have been 18.

Marlin baseball player Luis Gonzales helps fallen firefighter family www.privateofficer.com

Baseball player Luis Gonzalez helps fallen firefighter family www.privateofficer.com

JUPITER Fla. March 18 2008 — The idea was to bring in Luis Gonzalez, a veteran and one of the most respected players in the game, to help lead the young Marlins.
South Florida is getting a taste of what kind of man Gonzalez is this week. Gonzalez has been thinking for the past week of a way to help the family of Ray Vazquez, who was killed during a shooting March 3 at a Wendy’s in West Palm Beach.
Gonzalez called Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols and has arranged to have an auction on mlb.com for a package that includes dinner with Gonzalez and Pujols, and tickets to the Marlins-Cardinals spring training game March 20. The two highest bidders would bring three friends for a total of eight, and they also would spend some time on the field before the game.
“We’re here, and we’re part of the community,” Gonzalez said.
“It’s not about being a baseball player. It’s about being a human being.”
The money will go to Vazquez’s wife Michele, who is raising five sons.
“The mom is left with [five boys]. She’s a police officer, and he was a firefighter, so they put their lives on the line every day. I just thought it was a small gesture of what we could do,” Gonzalez said.
Gonzalez also is a father. He and his wife Christine have triplets — Jacob, Megan and Alyssa — who are 9.
“You’re a dad,” Gonzalez said. “I lived in those fast-food places; happy meals all the time. When I saw the situation, it was disheartening. It’s something small we can do, and hopefully enough people will understand what we’re trying to do and try to help out and raise some good money.
“My wife’s in town, and I talked to some people to ask if they thought it would be a worthwhile idea to do it, to just kind of help in any way we can and raise some funds and try to make a difference a little bit.”
Gonzalez has a history of giving to charities and helping in the community, wherever he has played.
“Everywhere I’ve ever gone I’ve kind of always tried to be aware of what’s going on in my surroundings,” he said of the incident.
“I had been watching it on the news and I’ve been contemplating doing something for a while. I’ve done stuff before with police officers in Arizona, and I’ve always been involved in community stuff.”
Gonzalez joked that all eight people at dinner probably would “be Cardinals fans,” and added he that it was only right that baseball players do the right thing.
“The advantage we have as professional athletes is we’re able to reach a lot of people whether it’s with you guys [media] or just us being in the community,” he said. “I’ve always tried to do the right thing and be positive and just let people know we’re human beings, too.
“We take our uniforms off, and we have to do stuff just like everybody else. People know who we are and you’re in the limelight, but I’m no different than anybody else.”
Gonzalez and his family have known Pujols and his family for years.
“I called him up told him the idea I had and explained it to him, and he said I’m all in whatever you decide to do,” Gonzalez said. “Both teams are here. It’s only fitting we try to do something for that family while we’re here.”

State Trooper indicted for death of 2 sisters www.privateofficer.com

State trooper indicted for death of two sisters www.privateofficer.com

BELLEVILLE, Ill. — March 18 2008
A state trooper has been indicted on reckless homicide charges that accuse him of using excessive speed – more than 120 mph – when he swerved into an oncoming car, killing two teenage sisters.
State police, who investigated the Nov. 23 wreck, recommended that prosecutors charge Trooper Matt Mitchell with reckless homicide. But the prosecutor deferred to the grand jury, which on Friday returned one reckless homicide count for each of the sisters.
The panel also charged Mitchell with two aggravated reckless driving counts related to the injuries of two survivors in the crash on Interstate 64, just east of St. Louis.
If convicted, he could be sentenced up to five years in prison for the homicide charges. The reckless driving charges carry a sentence of up to three years.
Mitchell has been ordered to appear in court on the charges. No bond was set.
Mitchell has an unlisted home telephone number and could not be reached for comment Friday. Court records did not list an attorney for him, a circuit court clerk said.
A coroner’s jury ruled the deaths of Collinsville sisters Jessica Uhl, 18, and Kelli Uhl, 13, reckless homicides, finding that Mitchell was driving 126 mph en route to another accident when he lost control of his patrol car the day after Thanksgiving. He swerved across a median at 102 mph and slammed into the sisters’ oncoming car.

Officer shot, police kill naked suspect www.privateofficer.com

Officer shot, police kill naked suspect www.privateofficer.com

CAMDEN, N.J. — March 19 2008
A naked stabbing suspect got into a struggle with a female police officer Monday, leading a second officer to open fire and kill the suspect. The female officer was shot and seriously wounded.
Authorities were investigating whether she was shot by the other officer, or by the suspect, who may have grabbed her gun.
Police were called to South Camden neighborhood after reports that a man had stabbed someone. The suspect was identified as Lamont Morton, 19.
When police arrived, they found Morton naked, knocking on the door of a house in the neighborhood, said Camden County Prosecutor’s Office spokesman Jason Laughlin.
Morton and the female officer got into a physical altercation, and then the second officer on the scene shot Morton several times, killing him, Laughlin said.
“There was a struggle that involved a gun,” he said.
Laughlin said it is not known whether the female officer, a 15-year veteran of the force whose name is not being released, was shot by her fellow officer in a friendly fire incident or whether Morton managed to obtain her gun and shoot her.
The officer was taken to Cooper University Hospital with several wounds and was listed in serious condition, Laughlin said.
Brigette Edwards said she was driving her 11-year-old daughter and a friend to school when she saw the naked man on top of the police officer, pinning her to the street.
Then, she said, another officer fired his gun about a half-dozen times. Edwards said the officer did not give a warning.
Edwards said she didn’t understand why police had to shoot Morton – especially so many times.
“My heart is just bleeding,” she said as she watched crime scene investigators work. “I hope my daughter can sleep properly tonight.”
Edwards said she knows Morton’s aunt, in whose home the initial stabbing occurred. Neither she nor Laughlin, though, knew where Morton had been living.
The stabbing victim was at the same hospital as the officer, Laughlin said, and was expected to survive.

Student in trouble for hacking school computers www.privateofficer.com

Fla. high school student in trouble for hacking into computers www.privateofficer.com

Broward County Fla. March 18 2008
A high school senior is accused of hacking into a Broward School District computer and collecting a cache of Social Security numbers, addresses and other personal information about employees from the district’s database.School administrators are asking the district’s nearly 37,000 workers to keep an eye on their online bank accounts as a precaution.”There’s so many people working in the schools, it’s a little frightening to think what can be done with that amount of information,” said Anne Clark, 61, a special education teacher at Coconut Creek High School. An e-mail and automated phone call were sent to all district personnel late Friday informing them of the hacking.
The student — identified only as a student at Atlantic Technical High School in Coconut Creek has been suspended for two weeks pending expulsion, said district spokesman Keith Bromery. The student’s name and age were not released.Coconut Creek police say the incident is still under investigation; no arrests have been made. Authorities could not say whether the student worked alone or what his motives were.”We don’t have any evidence that anything was done with the information, but employees should monitor transactions as they would do anyway,” Bromery said.Administrators became suspicious of illegal activity after a teacher noticed a student had used a school computer to download hacking software, Bromery said.Police were called in to handle the investigation after the downloads were traced to the suspected student. They received a court order to search the student’s home computer, where they found names, ages and private information culled from the school system’s employee database, Bromery said.”We don’t think he was able to actually use the information,” Bromery said. “It’s almost an intellectual activity to see how far they can go with subverting the system.”Though a student was able to change as many as 20 grades and other records after breaking into the system in 2006, Bromery said this incident was the biggest public school hacking he could remember.”There’s a special investigative unit handling this right now; it’s probably the most serious case we’ve had in a while,” he said.
