Teenager dies after shock from police Taser www.privateofficer.com
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said 17-year-old Darryl Wayne died Thursday after police say he became unruly with them as they tried to investigate the reason why they were called to the store.
The Charlotte Observer reported Friday that officers responded to a call at a Food Lion and saw Turner throwing something at a store manager.
Police said Turner appeared agitated, refused their commands and advanced toward an officer before the Taser was used.
Turner’s mother, Tammy Fontenot, said her son told her earlier in the day that he had stolen Hot Pockets from the store and feared disciplinary action. Fontenot said she told him to go back to the store to face what happened.

Security guard gets prison in jewel heist www.privateofficer.com
Jewelry store security guard gets prison in jewel heist www.privateofficer.com
A jewelry store security guard turned diamond thief is between a rock and a hard place.
He’ll be doing five years in prison, a Henrico County judge said this week, and he’s simultaneously undergoing divorce proceedings.
To make matters worse, Edward S. Goodman will go without the Chinese food that he spent much of his ill-gotten gains to consume.
“He seemed to have a fondness for Hunan,” said a person close to the investigation of Goodman’s thievery, which dates to 2006.
But for Adolf Jewelers owner Ronnie Adolf, Goodman’s demise has left a far more empty feeling in his wallet than the empty feeling in Goodman’s stomach.
In court proceedings, investigators placed Adolf’s loss at almost $600,000.
“It was absolute betrayal, a betrayal of all of us,” said Adolf, whose store is at 1537 N. Parham Road in the Ridge Shopping Center.
“This was a man whose arrest had customers sending us sympathy cards, they were so shocked. His mother used to send us breakfast in the mornings. We were all here together every day. It was one big family.”
. . .
Goodman, 42, was sentenced Thursday on embezzlement, larceny and computer-fraud convictions, all linked to his diamond heists.
Goodman’s girth and Fu Manchu mustache made him a familiar figure to jewelry store customers, many of whom stopped by, Adolf said, “just to chat with him.”
But for reasons still unclear, Goodman began swiping diamonds. He erased his pilferage from security tapes and even managed to erase computer records of legitimate sales.
“We trusted him like family and he stole my password,” Adolf said. “We couldn’t figure what was happening, where the profits were going. Was it the economy? Competition? It turned out it was Edward. The profits were going to him.”
Goodman, who lived in New Kent County and had worked for Adolf for 12 years, apparently tried to start a gun-sales business with some of his money, but that went belly-up.
“Things were so bad he was borrowing money from me at the same time he was stealing,” Adolf said.
. . .
R.L. Egan, a Henrico investigator who worked the case, said Goodman swiped as many as 100 diamonds, only 15 of which were recovered. That left Adolf Jewelers with a $593,000 loss, which a court this week ordered Goodman to repay. Adolf said he had insurance but that it did not cover the total loss.
Many diamonds were sold on eBay, where Goodman used the name “lawdragster,” Egan said. But Goodman made the error of listing each diamond’s certification number so he could assure its authenticity.
“He also refused to drop his price, which gave him a lot of legitimacy with buyers,” Egan said.
The certification numbers showed the diamonds were from Adolf. Case closed.
A SWAT team arrested the unsuspecting Goodman at work in June.
Adolf said Goodman never apologized. He pleaded no contest to the embezzlement and other charges in December and was sent to jail without bond.
Divorce papers delivered to him in jail list his arrest date as the day he deserted his family.
And after he serves his time in prison, Goodman will be on probation. For life.

A Brockton woman was charged this afternoon with motor vehicle homicide after police said she was talking on a cell phone when she drove into a telephone pole Thursday in Kingston, killing her pregnant passenger and her unborn baby.
When police arrived at the crash at Main Street, Nusquine M. Cartus, 30, was walking around her 1996 Nissan Maxima with blood on her hand, said Sergeant Zachary Potrykus of the Kingston Police Department. The telephone pole had snapped in half and fallen on the passenger’s side of the car, trapping 29-year-old Nadine Solide inside. The women were returning from Logan International Airport when Cartus crashed at 5:30 a.m., police said.
Solide, who was not wearing a seat belt, was rushed to Jordan Hospital in Plymouth, where she and her unborn child were pronounced dead, Potrykus said. Cartus was also treated for minor injuries.
Cartus was arraigned this afternoon in Plymouth District Court on charges that included two counts of motor vehicle homicide by negligent operation, operating to endanger, speeding, a marked lane violation, and impeded operation by talking on a cell phone.

A male suspect wearing a bright orange t-shirt was taken into custody by the Lake County Sheriff’s Department (LCSD) at the scene at approximately 6:30 p.m.
An entire block of Firethorn Road was taped off and four sheriff’s vehicles, one CHP vehicle and two HVL security vehicles were at the scene.
Eyewitnesses and neighbors said they were told nothing about what had happened at the residence and had not seen or heard anything other than screaming sirens from at least one ambulance that arrived shortly before 6 p.m.
A security officer confirmed that the entire HVL security staff was called to the scene at that time and at least six Sheriff’s deputies including at least two LCSD detectives arrived shortly thereafter.
Deputies were seen discussing the incident near residence numbers 18314 and 16322 Firethorn Road. A suspect appeared somber as he was taken in handcuffs and put into the back of a LCSD vehicle.
Several vehicles were directed around the taped-off area and Sugarbush Ct. at its juncture with Firethorn Road was closed to traffic and taped off.
A small kitchen knife smeared with what appeared to be blood was sighted in the middle of Firethorn Road near Sugarbush Ct. LCSD detectives had circled the weapon in bright orange spray paint. Deputies were seen observing the knife and surrounding area and walking to and from a residence. LCSD Deputy Joe Dutra was at the scene and said he could not release any information or confirm whether a stabbing had taken place. He said to contact the LCSD spokesperson, who was not available for comment at the scene and could not be reached by press time Friday night.

That time was a bright spot in his life, which also includes a criminal record dating back to 1989 and a substantial history of drug and alcohol abuse, Northampton County President Judge Robert Freedberg said
This is a guy who has some potential in life,” Freedberg said. “He’s been taken down by drugs and alcohol, primarily drugs.”
Freedberg sentenced the 37-year-old to 30 months to 10 years in state prison after he stole a car and nearly ran down a security guard.
Bethlehem police said Mosser was driving a vehicle stolen from Total Recon on July 15 in the 900 block of Orchard Street when he attempted to hit Peter Pavlovic, an employee of Westgate Mall security.
The 2000 Chevrolet S10 pickup truck had a license plate stolen from another vehicle at Total Recon and Mosser also stole keys to a 1998 Ford Escort.
Mosser was convicted of burglary, criminal trespass, simple assault, unauthorized use of automobile, fleeing or attempting to elude police, driving with a DUI-related suspended license and criminal attempt to commit bad checks.
“These were significant criminal acts he was involved in,” Freedberg said.
Defense attorney James Connell said because of a previous state parole violation, Mosser faces a state sentence of 33 to 40 months. Freedberg ordered his sentence to be served consecutive to the state sentence.
Freedberg ordered Mosser to pay court costs and a $1,000 fine, undergo psychological and drug and alcohol evaluations, random drug screenings, have no contact with the victims and maintain a full-time job when released.
Mosser sent a letter written in red ink to Freedberg before his sentencing, asking to be sent to a state facility because it would offer better drug treatment programs.
Mosser, with a bushy beard and his shaggy hair slicked back, told the judge in court he’s been sober for eight months.
“I’ve been fighting substance abuse addiction for the past two decades,” Mosser said. “I would have been dead from that, if not for” being sent to prison.
Freedberg ordered Mosser be sent to a state facility as soon as possible.

The store security officer watched Marriott pick up several items of clothing and carry the items into a changing room. When Marriott exited she placed everything but a pair of jeans on the counter.
When she walked out of the store without paying for the missing jeans a security officer confronted her. Police say Marriott became combative and attempted to flee. During the scuffle, she punched the male security officer. Police say the security guard pulled Marriott to the floor but her coat came off and she was able to get back up. That is when the security officer grabbed the dress Marriott was wearing, the dress tore and she ran out of the store in just her undergarments.
During a follow-up investigation officers learned Marriott was already wanted on six warrants charging her with two counts of third Degree Theft, two counts of City Theft and single counts of Second Degree Theft and Third Degree Driving while License Suspended.

USProtect employees go unpaid, company goes bankrupt www.privateofficer.com
USProtect workers go unpaid as company goes bankrupt www.privateofficer.com
Federal courthouse security workers in states across the country, including Delaware, have been in limbo since the company that employs them began bouncing checks.
USProtect, based in Silver Spring, Md., provided security for an array of federal agencies, including the 3rd District Court that includes all federal courts in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.
The U.S. Marshal’s Service awarded new contracts for court security to two companies, including one to Virginia-based MVM Inc., which will oversee Delaware’s security officers. But until the contracts are ironed out, next week will mark six weeks without a paycheck for security workers at the J. Caleb Boggs Federal Building in Wilmington.
“We’re working for nothing,” said J.J. Rodriguez, founder and president of the union representing the 26 workers who guard the federal building.
Rodriguez, a 12-year federal security officer, said many officers are owed more than just paychecks, such as accrued personal time, vacation and deposits into retirement funds.
“We get no answers here. They’re supposed to be bringing in companies but there’s no set agreement when we are going to get any of these monies recovered. Some guys are owed over $10,000.”
Steve Blando, a U.S. Marshal’s Service spokesman in Washington, D.C., said federal authorities have convinced the new contracted companies to accelerate the start of their contracts by two weeks. The companies were originally supposed to take over the contract on April 1.
“Obviously we want to make sure these folks get their money,” said Blando but added that there were “a lot of legal contract issues” that needed to be worked out between the new companies and the government.
“We work with them and understand what they are going through,” Blando said of the security workers. “It’s our best interest too to get them compensated. It’s just at this point a matter of following what we need to do in terms of procedure.”
Blando was unable to say why the government awarded the contact to USProtect in 2006, even though the Maryland company was embroiled in scandals the previous year.
USProtect’s founder, Michael B. Holiday, was charged with bribing a federal employee to gain security contracts over a three-year period. He pleaded guilty to corruption and tax evasion and dealing in child pornography over the Internet.
The company’s former chief financial officer, Richard S. Hudec, pleaded guilty in November to withholding information about felony convictions to help secure contracts worth more than $150 million. This included concealing four prior felony convictions.
Most recently, Wachovia Bank, and two former employees, filed involuntary Chapter 7 bankruptcy proceedings against USProtect in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Maryland, claiming $16.18 million in unpaid debts and wages.
Rodriguez said many of his co-workers are living off retirement pensions, but that’s only taking them so far. Rocketing fuel prices, as well as other high costs are eating up much of their budgets and has some postponing vacations.
“Everything is in limbo since the company bellied up,” he said. “They say they’ve brought in all these companies that agree to help, but nothing has been concretely done or shown to us on paper.”
WASHINGTON DC – NEWS FLASH
A bankruptcy judge has ordered a trustee to take over USProtect Corp., a security company that collapsed amid a multimillion federal contract-rigging scandal.
Judge Thomas J. Catliota of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Greenbelt, Md., on Wednesday ordered an interim trustee to take over the operations of USProtect, which provided security guards to federal office buildings and courthouses.
Wachovia Bank had asked for the judge to step in, claiming USProtect’s management was “nonexistent” after the company’s owner fired its accountant and financial advisers last week and several other key executives resigned.
In court papers, Wachovia said USProtect “began seriously unraveling” earlier this month when owner Lisa D. Hudec took over and various government agencies – including the Social Security Administration, the U.S. Marshals Service and the Walter Read Army Research Institute – sought to end their contracts with the troubled Silver Spring, Md., security firm.
According to Wachovia, which says USProtect owes it more than $15 million, Hudec may have misappropriated company funds for her own benefit. The bank claims Hudec paid herself more than $5 million in salary while acting solely in a “figurehead capacity” as chairman of USProtect’s board.
Wachovia, along with two other creditors, pushed USProtect into bankruptcy on Sunday by filing an involuntary Chapter 7 petition against the company.
Under bankruptcy law, companies typically have 20 days to answer an involuntary bankruptcy petition but Wachovia argued a trustee was “crucial” to safeguard the company’s remaining assets as customers moved to terminate their contracts with the firm.
USProtect didn’t return calls seeking comment. The company shut its doors last week and has “ceased operations” according to a recorded message on its main telephone line. Hudec, Wachovia said, is at her home in Florida under her doctor’s care.

Students arrested for selling stolen items on Craigslist www.privateofficer.com
University students arrested for selling stolen items on Craigslist www.privateofficer.com
Two Santa Clara University athletes have been arrested for allegedly stealing iPods, laptops and credit cards from fellow students and then trying to sell them on Craigslist, according to police.
Thomas Hendrickson, 20, and William Gorin, 21, both members of the university’s water polo team, were arrested Monday in connection with the thefts after a Santa Clara police officer posed as a buyer and set up an exchange, police said Friday. The two were arrested on suspicion of burglary and possession of stolen property.
In an e-mail, SCU Athletic Director Dan Coonan said both students were suspended from the team pending “resolution of this matter.”
Saturday night, while attending a house party on Panelli Place, Hendrickson and Gorin made off with various electronic devices from an unlocked bedroom, according to police.
A few hours later, Gorin, from Mercer Island, Wash., and Hendrickson, from Los Altos, targeted an apartment on Bellomy Street with its lights off. The door was locked, but the two found a key under a doormat and got inside. With the residents asleep, they searched the immediate area and made off with several items, police said.
Monday, one of the victims, also a SCU student, saw several of his stolen items for sale on Craigslist and notified police. A police sergeant posed as a buyer and agreed to meet the seller at a pre-arranged location. Around 5:30 p.m. Monday, the detectives arrested Hendrickson, who had showed up to sell the stolen property. He was arrested on suspicion of possessing stolen property.
Gorin was later arrested at his residence in Santa Clara.
All of the stolen property was returned to its owners.
