Knife wielding shoplifter tased www.privateofficer.com

A knife-wielding shoplifter at the Big Y on Route 7 who struggled with store security this morning was subdued with a Taser after he refused to submit to police orders to surrender the weapon, police said.

Jeffrey Demayo, 40, of Pocono Road, Brookfield, pulled out a short-bladed, razor-sharp knife during a scuffle with security officers who apprehended him for shoplifting, according to police. During the scuffle, he dropped the knife, but then retrieved it, and when police arrived he still refused to give it up.

After he was hit with the Taser, he was taken to New Milford Hospital and then transferred to the police station, police said. Beyond the sixth-degree larceny charge for shoplifting, Demayo was additionally charged with second-degree threatening, second-degree reckless endangerment, interfering with a police officer and breach of peace. Demayo was held on a $20,000 bond for arraignment in Bantam Superior Court Thursday.Officer Brant Cadovius made the 11:30 a.m. arrest.
