Stabbings at mall have shoppers on edge www.privateofficer.com

Stabbings at mall have shoppers on edge www.privateofficer.com

MESA AZ. April 5 2008 — Two stabbings at a Mesa mall are related, and authorities have a suspect in custody, police said.
The first stabbing occurred Sunday afternoon at a Macy’s department store in Fiesta Mall. Mesa police said a man was stabbed in an unprovoked attack, receiving non-life threatening injuries.
Officers didn’t locate a suspect Sunday, but they got a physical description of the attacker and his vehicle.

A second stabbing happened Monday afternoon. Police stopped and detained a man after security officers found the victim fatally stabbed in the restroom of the Fiesta Mall food court.
Police are withholding the murder victim’s name until his family is notified.
Late Monday, Mesa police confirmed the male suspect bought an eight inch butcher knife from a mall store shortly before Monday’s incident.
Police are also in the process of conducting a photo lineup with the victim of Sunday’s stabbing at Fiesta Mall.
Mesa Police Chief George Gascon said the attacks appear to be random.
The suspect is a convicted murderer with a history of mental illness who spent six years in prison and was released about two years ago, Gascon said.
Mesa police said the victim of Sunday’s stabbing was a 22-year-old male walking through the men’s department in Macy’s, the East Valley Tribune reported.
According to police, the suspect entered the store Sunday afternoon and approached the first victim. The victim said he looked in the suspect’s direction as they passed, at which time the suspect turned around, grabbed him from behind and stabbed him in the neck with a knife.
The victim turned around and said to the suspect, “What are you doing? I don’t even know you.” The suspect then stabbed the victim in the shoulder three times.
Mesa police said they didn’t notify the public about Sunday’s stabbing until Monday morning because investigators didn’t have enough information, and that releasing the details would have been premature, Gascon said.
Crime scene tape and a police presence at the mall Monday afternoon drew the attention of shoppers.
“We knew something really bad must have happened,” said Rose Medina, a Fiesta Mall shopper.
Mike Jorgenson, senior property manager at Fiesta Mall, said the incident only affected a small area of the mall. “Everyone’s going about their shopping,” he said.

Women wanted for jewelry heist surrender to police www.privateofficer.com

Women wanted for jewelry heist surrender to police www.privateofficer.com

Walton County Fla. April 5 2008

Two women turned themselves in to Walton County (Fla.) authorities Wednesday night in connection with a March 12 jewelry store theft, Walton County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Eddie Farris said.
Emily Parker Johnson, 54, of a Croom Drive address in Montgomery, and Mary Parker Brown, 52, of a Laurelwood Lane address in Montgomery, were both charged with grand theft, according to Walton County arrest reports.
The two sisters, along with a third sister, Rheata Parker Dozier, 55, of a Wares Ferry Road address in Montgomery, entered Hooch and Holly’s jewelry store in the community of Seaside in northwest Florida March 12, according to Walton County Sheriff’s Office reports.
Store manager Jennifer Black has said one woman bought something at the counter while the other two dropped jewelry into straw bags sold by the store. The women left without paying for the items, she said.
The women arrested allegedly took $4,424.70 of jewelry, according to the same reports.
Dozier was not charged, Farris said, because the Florida state attorney’s office had “insufficient evidence” to prosecute.
“(Brown and Johnson) came in late (Wednesday) evening, sometime after 4:30 p.m.,” Farris said. “They were booked in and bonded out right after that.”
Both Brown and Johnson were released on $5,000 bond each, Farris said.
Sheriff’s deputies recovered the jewelry and returned it to the store.
A Mary Brown in Montgomery with the same Laurelwood Lane address listed in the police report said neither she nor her sister were those who turned themselves in. A Rheata P. Dozier at the same Wares Ferry Road address as listed in the police reports said she did not know anything about the situation

Student accusses school security of assault www.privateofficer.com

DALLAS TX. April 5 2008 ― A high school student in Dallas said that she was assaulted by a campus security guard. Her mom claims to have witnessed the entire ordeal.
The mother and daughter told their story to CBS 11 News on Thursday.
Chrisha Johnson and her mother said that the girl got into a verbal disagreement with a school youth action officer.
The officer then allegedly grabbed and choked the 16-year-old, and tried to cuff her hands.”He had my hand all behind my back, or whatever, and he choked me. He tried to put me to sleep, but I was fighting,” explained Johnson. “He grabbed me. I got bruises and everything.”The alleged assault happened at Spruce High School.
Nobody at the school is denying that the incident took place. School officials confirmed that an investigation is underway.
The officer has not been charged with any offense.Several questions now remain to be answered. Was Johnson under arrest? Did she commit a crime?
Did the officer really put a choke hold on the teen. Most importantly, why did it happen?
The mother and daughter said that the officer intended to hurt the teenager.
Police denied CBS 11 News access to the school on Thursday.
The school’s principal declined to comment.Meanwhile, Johnson is using an icepack, given to her by paramedics, to help the swelling on her face.

Officer accidentally tasers self www.privateofficer.com

Montgomery Ala. April 5 2008

A school resource officer was tased Thursday while trying to break up a fight at Jefferson Davis High School, police said.

At least two fights broke out in the back parking lot of the school at about 3:30 p.m. when a Montgomery Police Department school resource officer attempted to break up a fight involving several boys, said Capt. Huey Thornton of the Montgomery Police Department.
But two to three girls tried to stop the officer, Thornton said.
One, a 16-year-old girl, jumped on the officer’s back and began to struggle with the officer, causing his taser to accidentally go off and jolt the officer and the girl, Thornton said. The 16-year-old will be charged with harassment and disorderly conduct. A 19-year-old, who is not a student at the school, was charged with third-degree assault in the incident, Thornton said.
The fight stemmed from an on-going feud that happened away from the school, Thornton said. Someone apparently called the 19-year-old to the school leading up to the fight, he said. The officer was treated at the scene, Thornton said.
The 16-year-old girl was transported to a local hospital by Haynes ambulance, he said. No one was seriously injured in the incident, Thornton said.

Police bust major theft ring wanted in multiple states www.privateofficer.com

By BILL LEUKHARDT Courant staff writer

FARMINGTON CT. April 5 2008— – Three New York City men face numerous charges for their alleged involvement in a multi-state shoplifting ring that police say stole about $15,000 of items from several Westfarms mall stores last May.

Manuel Guerrero, 26, Jorge Perez, 30, and Maicol Giovani Perez, 26, all of Queens, were each charged by warrant with first-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit first-degree larceny. The three were arraigned Wednesday in Superior Court in Hartford and are due back this month. They were held, with bail set at $100,000 each.T
heir arrests came three weeks after police arrested a Queens woman who officers said was probably part of a shoplifting ring.
In the latest court records, police said the four are “clearly part of an organized shoplifting ring that travels to malls in different states to commit large amounts of retail larcenies.”
Pamela Ramirez, also known as Silvia Barreto, had been in jail, held on $100,000 bail since her arrest March 4 at John F. Kennedy International Airport when customs agents detained her. Police said Wednesday their investigation determined she was with Guerrero and both Perezes at Westfarms last May.
Police said the investigation may continue, but no additional arrests are expected. The four suspects were all arrested in 2006 in Avon in a shoplifting incident at a Baby Gap store, police said. In court records, police said some of those charges are still pending in Superior Court in Hartford.
The four suspects have “numerous arrests for larceny and have several aliases,” police said.
Police also said that Maicol Perez and Jorge Perez are wanted in Wheaton, Ill., on retail fraud charges.

Deputies arrested a 37-year-old Albertsons employee Wednesday on charges she made fake transactions and stole lottery tickets.

Julie Reneus, 3625 Poplar Way, East Naples, was charged with grand theft. The thefts were reported over several days in March at the Albertsons at 3350 U.S. 41 E. East Naples.
Reports say Reneus, who works in the Albertsons liquor department, would run off lottery tickets, charged for them without putting money into the cash register and then would conduct a fake beer keg or tap deposit return for customers, which would balance out the money she was removing from the register or charging the lottery tickets to.
Store surveillance video showed Reneus, who works alone in the liquor department, working on the days when the discrepancies were reported.
There were no customers in the store at the time Reneus made transactions for keg returns, reports said.
A search of Reneus by deputies turned up several lottery tickets in her pants pockets. A subsequent search of her purse turned up more lottery tickets.
Many of the tickets corresponded to specific dates in which keg deposit returns were conducted, reports said.

Man arrested for scam at Sam’s Club www.privateofficer.com

Man arrested for scam at Sam’ Club www.privateofficer.com

Naples Fla. April 5 2008
A 34-year-old Marco Island man has been arrested on charges he stole a 40-inch flat-screen TV from Sam’s Club and then attempted to get a refund using a receipt from another TV he’d purchased only moments earlier.
Gokhan Dikbiyik, of 441 Sandhill St., was arrested by Collier County Sheriff’s deputies Friday, after he returned from Turkey, and was charged with grand theft of $300 to $5,000, a third-degree felony punishable by up to five years in a state prison. He was booked into the county jail on $2,500 bond.
His arrest comes a month after a co-defendant, his son-in-law, Sinan Z. Oztimurlenk, 19, of 1667 Barbados Court, Marco Island, was arrested on the same charge.
Arrest reports say the two went to the Sam’s Club store at 2550 Immokalee Road, where they used someone else’s Sam’s Club card and a Mastercard to purchase a 40-inch flat screen television and surround-sound system for $1,482 on Feb. 4.
They left the store, reports say, and came back with the empty shopping cart and headed to the electronics section, where they placed the identical 40-inch TV into the cart and left the store, showing the sales clerk checking purchases at the door the receipt from their previous purchase.
They returned to the store and went to the customer service counter, where they asked for a refund on a Mastercard. The entire scenario was captured on video surveillance.
Security officers provided the cardholder’s name to deputies, who went to the cardholder’s home on Feb. 21 and it turned out to be the younger man’s mother. She said her son had just purchased a TV and surround system. Oztimurlenk denied any wrongdoing, telling deputies he hoped his father-in-law hadn’t gotten him into trouble.
But reports say Oztimurlenk is clearly shown on video participating in the alleged theft with Dikbiyik and he was arrested six days later. He said Dikbiyik was in Turkey but would return in a couple of weeks.

3 p.m. Monday in the parking lot of the Target at 5001 Junipero Serra Blvd., police reported Tuesday.
He had been masturbating under his clothing in front of two girls, ages 8 and 11, at various times and locations in the store, police said. Security officers noted his suspicious activity and called police, Colma police Sgt. Pete Renois said.
Lemay was arrested on suspicion of lewd and obscene conduct and a parole violation. He is being held without bail at the county jail. Lemay had just been released from prison four days before the incident, according to police. The conviction that sent him to prison was unavailable as of press time, Renois said.
According to the district attorney’s office, Daly City police previously arrested Lemay on Nov. 25 on charges of exposing himself and masturbating in front of a bar.
He was arrested on suspicion of indecent exposure and parole violation, but prosecutors didn’t file charges because of “a few problems with the case,” according to San Mateo County Assistant District Attorney Morley Pitt.
Principally, Lemay was not attempting to be seen when he masturbated in front of the bar, and “there’s nothing in the penal code that specifically says that you can’t masturbate in public or expose yourself in public, as long as you essentially are taking steps to make sure nobody sees what you are doing,” Pitt said.
Lemay was scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday in Superior Court on the obscene conduct and parole violation charges related to the incident in Target.

Loss prevention personnel at a local Walmart say they watched as a man walked through the store and loaded up on electronic items, cameras and other merchandise and they knew he was no regular paying customer.
Loss prevention agents notified Framingham police that they were watching a shoplifter and asked for some assistance. Officers were dispatched to the Walmart and waited at the exit door for security to point the man out to them..
Security agents say that it appeared to them that the man, was opening packages with a knife and putting the items in his pocket.
The security agents continued to watch as the man, later identified as Ed Manuel Colon, grabbed a 32-inch, flat-screen television off the shelves, put it in his carriage and walked past the registers without paying.
“As he was about to leave, he was stopped by security agents and he said that he wasn’t stealing anything,” said Shastany.
He told police and security that he was not trying to steal a television, cameras and MP3 players when he tried to walk outside Wal-Mart without paying, police said.
Rather, Colon, 40, said he was planning on waiting outside with the $907 worth of electronics until his wife got there with the money, police spokesman Lt. Paul Shastany said.
Along with the $597 television, security found two digital cameras and two MP3 players hidden in Colon’s jacket.
Police also searched Colon’s car, that he said wasn’t in the parking lot and they found a brand new MP3 player in a box. Colon claimed he bought it from another store two weeks earlier.
Colon of 20 Adams St. was charged with shoplifting of property worth more than $100.
Colon was released without bail after his Framingham District Court arraignment.

Police in Sarasota conducted an investigation of theft after being notified by store officials and have now made an arrest in the case. Authorities have charged an Englewood man and say that he has been stealing thousands from local Bealls Department Stores.
On April 1st, 2008 Sarasota Sheriff’s Detectives arrested Nathan M. Hublick of Englewood at Bealls Department Store at 5451 Palmer Crossings, Sarasota on 4 counts of Grand Theft and one count of Petit Theft totaling $8,623.97 from various Bealls Department Stores in Sarasota County.
Police say that the suspect would enter the stores and remove jewelry from their respective jewelry boxes and then concealed the jewelry on his person before leaving the stores.
Authorities say that the store security personnel became aware of it and in some cases his crimes were captured on the stores surveillance cameras but police did not say why the loss prevention agents didn’t attempt to apprehend him on any of those occassions.
Sarasota detectives say that they got involved and were able to identify Hublick as the suspect in all of the theft cases and filed the charges against him this week.
Hublick is currently being held at the Sarasota County Jail on $4,120.00 bond. The investigation is ongoing.

Massachusetts and Florida police arrested a Logan Airport Lead Transportation Security Officer on a variety of child pornography charges.
After an undercover sting police say that they arrested Richard D. McLaughlin, 48, of Everett, who currently is in custody in St. Lucie County, Fla., in lieu of $350,000 bail.
A TSA official said McLaughlin was suspended indefinitely without pay.
McLaughlin unwittingly contacted an undercover Florida child porn task force agent who was posing online as a father with an available 11-year-old daughter.
Between January and March, from his home in Everett, McLaughlin allegedly discussed and repeatedly asked the agent for online sex with the purported daughter.
The agent allegedly received multiple links to child porn images from McLaughlin.
Florida agents, along with Massachusetts State Police, arrested McLaughlin at his house on March 7.
Authorities are continuing their investigation as they try to determine if there were any other on line crimes committed by McLaughlin.
