Mall security, customers battle to subdue robbery suspect www.privateofficer.com
OCALA FLA. April 9 2008

Ntl. Assoc. Private Officers
Police and mall security officers responded to a robbery call at the Paddock Mall on Thursday.
Police say that a Tampa man snatched an expensive Rolex watch from the Gause & Son Jewelers in the mall and then tried to fight his way out of the store.
In the mall at 3100 College Road, saleswoman Maria Kirkland told Officer Warren Brown that a man entered the store at around 3pm and asked to look at a Rolex. After looking at several watches, he walked to the other side of the store, she said. Thinking that was odd, Kirkland notified Rodney Gause, who stood at the entrance. The store also called the mall security office for assistance and security officer Terry Geromel responded to the store.
The man allegedly asked Kirkland if he could see the Oyster Perpetual Submariner Rolex watch, worth $25,250. When she showed him the timepiece, he grabbed it and ran.
Employees and mall security subdued Yorge Alvarez, 23, until police arrived, according to an Ocala police report.
Geromel caught him, and the suspect punched the security officer twice in the face, according to the police report. Employees and a shopper helped the security officer detain Alvaraz until police arrived and got him into custody.
Alvarez is charged with strong-arm robbery and battery on a security officer.
Geromel, whose face was swollen and scratched, refused medical attention.

Agents round up 330 fugitive aliens in south Florida www.privateofficer.com
MIAMI FLA. April 9 2008
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials Monday announced the arrests of 330 fugitive aliens in one of the largest customs enforcement operations ever undertaken in South Florida.
The arrests — made during a two-week roundup in Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties that ended Friday — targeted individuals who had been ordered to leave the country but refused to do so.
“Our message is clear: The days when illegal aliens in this nation willfully ignore immigration judges’ orders are over,” said Michael Rozos, director of ICE’s Florida field office.
Officials said the arrests are just a small portion of the nation’s backlog of immigration violators: about 597,000 total fugitives.
The numbers are so large that South Florida’s enforcement teams are set to increase from five to seven.
“We take immediate action,” said Rozos. “Our officers and agents are out there looking for that failure to appear (in court) that same day or the very next day, so we’re not giving anybody the opportunity to hide and to go underground.”

Police sting nets jewelry thief www.privateofficer.com
ALPHARETTA, Ga. April 9 2008
By: Bryan Hills
Security News Magazine
Police say that they have made a single arrest in a major jewelry heist in Alpharetta after they were notified that the merchandise was missing from the company.
Police say that they have arrested a Shane Company employee on charges she stole jewelry worth about $1.2 million.
Alpharetta police say that Shane Company representatives contacted them after a year-end audit revealed a large loss in merchandise had occurred, according to officials.
While police investigators were looking into the theft, they say that they received a tip from the owner of a jewelry store in Cobb County saying that someone was trying to sell certain items of jewelry to them and it seemed suspicous.
Investigators then initiated a sting operation where they met with the woman trying to sell the jewelry items and police say that woman was arrested at that time.
Investigators arrested Sara Lane Tolar during the meeting. During their investigation, investigators say that Tolar admitted stealing jewelry over a five-month period. Numerous pieces of stolen diamond jewelry from the Shane Company were found in Tolar’s vehicle, according to authorities.
She has been charged by Cobb County authorities with felony charges of theft by receiving stolen property and theft by deception.
She has also been charged by Alpharetta police with felony theft by forgery, theft by taking and theft by deception.
Tolar is being held without bond in the Cobb County Jail.

Some have concerns over recent casino crimes www.privateofficer.com
GULFPORT MS. april 9 2008
A recent armed robbery and kidnapping from a casino parking lot is believed to be an isolated incident, though police said that being aware of your surroundings is always a safe bet.
The Sun Herald learned of the April 2 holdup after a Sound Off caller shared concerns about the security of guests at Island View Casino Resort. The reader said several other crimes have occurred there.
A police official released details of the robbery when asked this week and said it wasn’t made public sooner because the lead investigator wanted a head start on identifying the suspect. The official also said only four other crimes – all auto burglaries – have been reported at Island View since January.
“It was a single incident,” Deputy Police Chief Alfred Sexton said of the robbery. “If we had reason to believe otherwise, we would have issued a security alert through the media like we recently did when we realized there was a pattern of thieves targeting shoppers.”
Police on Tuesday continued to look for Chun “Jack” Wu, 25, a Biloxi man suspected of forcing a woman into her car at gunpoint. Police called to Island View around 6 p.m. last Wednesday were told the robber drove the woman’s car two blocks away, robbed her and got out of the car. Police have a warrant for Wu’s arrest.
The four auto burglaries have been cleared through arrests, Sexton said. Two of them, in which burglars smashed a window to gain entry, were solved through surveillance tapes. The most recent one, on Feb. 4, was solved after Island View employees called police to report seeing a man inside a car that wasn’t his, Sexton said.
Island View CEO Lindsey Inman, in a written statement, said the safety of patrons and staff is “the highest priority in our operations. We strive to create the safest possible environment on site by providing a skilled and trained security force that regularly patrols our grounds, state-of-the-art surveillance throughout our parking lots – including the garage – and beyond-ample lighting in all areas of our resort property.”
Patrons of the casino or other businesses should ask for an escort to their car if they feel unsafe, said Sexton, giving his best piece of advice as this: “Always be aware of your surroundings.”

A Harwood man was arrested and charged with passing counterfeit $50 bills at two stores in Westfield Annapolis Mall, Anne Arundel County police said.
Daniele Francesco Nucci, 26, of the 100 block of Jordan Lane, is accused of trying to pay for a drink at the Chick-Fil-A counter using the fake bill about 7 p.m. Friday, but the employees immediately turned him away and called mall security and the police.
While they looked for him, an employee of the nearby Borders Books and Music store approached Sgt. John Gilmer, a county police officer who was moonlighting at the mall, to report a similar transaction within the past 30 seconds.
Gilmer and mall security officers began to search the mall and immediately found Nucci, who had on him 15 counterfeit $50 bills in addition to $240 in legitimate currency. Nucci attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended behind a business in the 100 block of Defense Highway.
After the foot pursuit, he complained of chest pains and problems breathing. Nucci was transported to Anne Arundel Medical Center.
He was charged with two counts of knowingly passing counterfeit documents, possessing counterfeit currency and resisting arrest.
The Secret Service Baltimore field office was contacted. It is unknown whether Nucci will also face federal charges.
