Burglars steal lottery tickets, try burning store down www.privateofficer.com
VILLA RICA, Ga.(Metro Atlanta) April 15 2008– Police in Villa Rica hope video can help catch three burglars who stole lottery tickets and then tried to burn down a convenience store.
Despite a store full of goodies the trio came for just one thing — lottery tickets. And they busted through a convenience store door in the middle of the night in order to take them, according to officials.
Store manager Christie Moran said surveillance video showed the first person came in with a gallon of gas and the second person came into the store and grabbed the lottery tickets. She said a third person just stood by the front door, presumably as the look-out. “It’s scary,” said Moran.
“The third person has a gallon gas can and he’s pouring it on the counter of the store and on the floor and they attempted to light it as they exit the store,” said Capt. Brian Camp with the Villa Rica Police Department.
Surveillance video showed that for some reason, the fire didn’t take and the three fled the scene with a display full of scratch-off lottery tickets.
This crime has been so common around the metro Atlanta area law enforcers, at one point, had a task force formed to catch the criminal or criminals.
Three of the crimes took place in Floyd County alone. In one of the Floyd County cases, the suspect almost burned himself up before burning down a store.
And another store in Paulding County burned to the ground. The only thing taken was lottery tickets.
This weekend’s crime in Villa Rica didn’t pay very much. Moran said she quickly called lottery officials who cancelled out the stolen tickets.
“I think four dollars is the largest one they’ve been able to successfully cash that we’ve been able to trace at this time,” said Camp.
“My job is personal. It’s like home. This is my way of feeding my kids and paying my bills and I find it very personal,” said Moran.
Camp said one of the suspects cut himself and left behind blood. They’re hoping the DNA evidence can help lead them to a suspect.

15 Year old kidnapped, pistol whipped www.privateofficer.com
NASHVILLE, Tenn. April 15 2008 — Metro police said a 15-year-old girl was beaten and kidnapped overnight Monday.
The 15-year-old girl was at home at the Riverchase Apartments in east Nashville last night about midnight when four people came to her house, called her and asked her to come outside.
Police said when she came outside at least two of the four people pistol-whipped her and put her in the trunk of their car.
Police said it’s possible that the girl knew one of her attackers.
Investigators said the girl escaped from the trunk and ran when her attackers stopped to make sure she didn’t have a cell phone in the trunk that she could use to call for help.
When the attackers opened the trunk, the girl was able to get away and call police.
The girl gave police a good enough description of the car that officers were able to locate the car on Woodland Street. Police said that upon searching the car, they found three handguns.
“Well, based on the injuries to the victim and the statement from the victim and the fact of the weapons in the vehicle, it’s a significant arrest,” said Metro police Capt. David Imhof.
The 15-year-old girl was treated at a local hospital and is expected to be OK.
Police also said they were able to get information from a witness to the attack.
Joseph Jones, Vince Barbie, Anthony Sanders and Cornisha Hayes have all been charged with aggravated kidnapping.

Mother and son killed in accident at McDonald’s www.privateofficer.com
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. April 15 2008 — A mother and son was killed in what police are calling a tragic accident and now are wondering what happened to cause such a wreck.
A mother and son were killed after police say that their vehicle flipped and skidded into a McDonald’s parking lot over the weekend.
Ethel Wyatt, 79, and her son, William Wyatt, 44, both of Fayetteville, Tenn., were killed in the crash Sunday afternoon.
Police spokesman Wendell Johnson said both were wearing their seat belts and died at the scene.
Madison County coroner Bobby Berryhill said William Wyatt may have suffered a medical complication while driving.
Witnesses said it appeared the mother was steering the car from the passenger’s seat before the car overturned.
The car hit a McDonald’s entrance sign near the road, several shrubs and a light pole before skidding through several empty parking spaces and stopping at poles that separate the restaurant from another business.

Music teacher charged with sexual assault www.privateofficer.com
COBB COUNTY, Ga. April 15 2008
By: Kyle. T. Greene
The Ntl. Assoc. Private Officers
www.privateofficer.com Police say that they have charged a Cobb County music teacher with sexually assaulting a student.
Steven Parkman, 32, the director of the orchestra at Harrison High School was arrested by county police late Monday afternoon.
Authorities said the victim is a 17-year-old student at Harrison High.
Cobb county police investigators said that although it was not an actual case of rape, it was a sexual assault of the student.
“If you look at the definition by code section of sexual assault, a person commits that crime when such person has supervisory or disciplinary authority over another person. So because she was a student at the school and he was a teacher, it makes that the appropriate charge,” said Officer Cassie Reece with the Cobb County Police Department.
In addition to being the director of the orchestra at Harrison High, he is also the chairman of the Fine Arts department at the school and was named the STAR Teacher for the 2007-2008 school year.
Parkman is still being held in the Cobb County Jail.

Police seek shoplifter who struck mall officer www.privateofficer.com
Fond du Luc WI. April 15 2008
Kyle T. Greene
Ntl. Assoc. Private Officers
Police are looking for a 38-year-old Fond du Lac woman who ran into a security officer with her car after he attempted to question her about a shoplifting incident Friday afternoon at Forest Mall.
The woman allegedly made a “fraudulent return” to Sears, 757 W. Johnson St., around 3:15 p.m. Friday, receiving in-store credit for items she never bought, said Lt. Steve Klein of the Fond du Lac Police Department.“
Apparently she took some merchandise from within the store and then went to return it,” he said. She attempted to do the same thing at JC Penney’s earlier that day, according to a Fond du Lac Police Department report.
She returned around $200 worth of items she took from Sears, according to the report. When Sear’s employees couldn’t find surveillance tape showing the woman stealing from their store, they granted the woman a gift card for the items, according to the report.
On her way out of the mall, security saw that she was pushing her young child in a stroller that was allegedly stolen from Kohl’s and made attempts to stop and question her, according to the report.
A 36-year-old security officer at the mall approached the woman, grabbing onto the stroller. The woman took her young child out of the stroller and grabbed her shopping bags. At that time, six stolen DVDs, valued at $80, fell out, according to the report.
The woman then got into her car as the security officer grabbed onto her door, demanding the woman come back inside the mall, according to the report. “She started backing out while the door was still open and in the process, the security officer got caught between the door and the car next to him,” Klein said.
The officer received minor injuries from the accident.
The officer reports the woman did not put her young child into a safety seat and backed out at a high rate of speed, according to the report. The open car door hit two vehicles as the suspect quickly backed out, according to the report. Both vehicles were damaged.
Police have not arrested the woman and are continuing their search for her, Klein said.
The Fond du Lac Police Department has requested a warrant be issued for the woman’s arrest.

Security News Magazine
Orange County deputies responded to a shooting at an area apartment complex and found that a security officer had been involved.
Deputies are now trying to piece together what happened after the apartment security officer opened fire Monday night at the Lake Weston Apartments, off Forest City Road.
According to what deputies have learned so far, it looks like that the security guard was approaching a car at the complex with people inside that he thought was suspicous. As the security officer approached the vehicle, the driver suddenly put the car in reverse, and tried to run over the security officer according to the sheriff’s report.

Armed shoplifting spree lands 3 in jail www.privateofficer.com
Citrus Heights CA. April 15 2008
By: Rick McCann
Ntl. Assoc. Private Officers
Three suspected shoplifters were corralled Friday afternoon when Citrus Heights police spotted them traveling on Greenback Lane in their champagne colored 1996 Cadillac Eldorado.
Two of the three suspects, Larry Donnell Austin, 22, and Jacob Noah Gartrell, 20, remain in Sacramento County Jail today. Another suspect, Pavel Dachouk, 23, also was arrested on suspicion of shoplifting, burglary and conspiracy but he was released from custody Sunday.
Athorities say that Austin was confronted by security officers outside Best Buy in the Birdcage Centre about 1 p.m. Friday after he reportedly placed MP-3 players and accessories into a black bag and walked out the door, with the alarms sounding behind him.
When a security officer grabbed his jacket police say that Austin then pulled a pocket knife and threatened the guard before jumping into the Eldorado, police stated.
Security personnel notified police who began searching for the suspects vehicle.
But police say that about 20 minutes later, officers received a call from Walgreen’s at Greenback Lane and Dewey Drive. Someone fitting Austin’s description had just grabbed an DVD player and walked out with it.
Police continued to search the area and spotted the suspect’s car and was able to get it stopped and took all three suspects into custody.
Officers also say that the trio made a quick trip to a local pawn shop, after their shoplifting spree, where they sold the DVD player. They may have been headed back to Austin’s home on Burich Avenue when officers spotted the car.
Austin is also charged with misdemeanor charge of brandishing a weapon.

Two injured during Fla. Water Park melee www.privateofficer.com
from Orlando Sentinenl
Orlando Fla. April 15 2008
The two Pompano Beach teens injured when violence erupted at a Spring Break party at Orlando’s Wet ‘n Wild water park are popular football players at a private school in Deerfield Beach and enjoy playing videogames, friends said Monday.
Michael Roosevelt, 18, who police said was shot in his left calf, is a student at Zion Lutheran Christian School, said Andrea Butler, whose 16-year-old daughter went on the trip, too. The girl attends Deerfield Beach High School, where Roosevelt transferred from last year.Driver license records show the spelling of the victim’s name as Micheal Rosavelt. His 16-year-old brother, Marlin Laguerre, 16, also a student at Zion Lutheran, was struck in the mouth, possibly by a rock, said Orlando police Sgt. Barb Jones.
Michael Roosevelt, 18, was shot in his left calf. His brother, Marlin Laguerre, 16, was struck in the upper lip, possibly by a rock. They were treated at Orlando Regional Medical Center. Roosevelt is a student at Zion Lutheran Christian School, said Andrea Butler, whose 16-year-old daughter also went on the trip. The girl attends Deerfield Beach High School, where Roosevelt transferred from last year. Marlin Laguerre also is a student at Zion Lutheran.Driver license records show the spelling of the victim’s name as Micheal Rosavelt. The shooting ended a tumultuous day at the park.
Witnesses and police said several fights occurred during the afternoon, culminating at 4:41p.m. when dozens of kids jumped on an Orlando officer making an arrest, an incident report said.Jones said the officer — who was not hurt — used chemical spray to calm the fracas.
At that point, Jones said, several hundred kids were taken out of the park and told to get on the buses to go home. But students said the buses were locked, forcing them to wait in the parking lot.Shortly after 5 p.m., at least one gunshot was heard, creating pandemonium, students said. Many ran about, not sure where to go or what to do, Cleckley said.
Orlando police, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office and the Florida Highway Patrol responded with more than a dozen marked cruisers. They shut down several blocks of International Drive from Wet ‘n Wild to Kirkman Road and quickly cordoned off the parking lot with yellow crime-scene tape.
The road was reopened within an hour.”It was chaos with a gun involved. That’s a bad combination,” Jones said. One 17-year-old was arrested for misdemeanor assault and interference in the parking lot, Jones said. She would not release his name.
Rhonda Williams of Boynton Beach said her 16-year-old daughter, a junior at Atlantic, called her shortly after the melee.”She was hiding behind the bus. She was really shaken up,” Williams said. “Everyone was running and people were trampled.”Before her daughter got on the bus, she said, an attendant asked the youths whether anyone had guns or drugs.
Williams said the attendant checked bags before the kids boarded. She said her daughter wanted to go on the trip after getting a flier at her school. She paid $230 for the trip, which included insurance, she said.”This was my daughter’s first and last time on this trip,” Williams said.
Jones said investigators today will go over witness statements, talk more to the Pompano Beach brothers who were injured and examine the gun to see whether it was involved in the shooting.”We’ve got to see what we’ve got and if it takes us anywhere,” she said. The teens were part of a Spring Bling 2008 outing sponsored by XtremeTrips of Fort Lauderdale. Company officials and Wet ‘n Wild officials could not be reached.
The students came from numerous high schools in Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties, police and witnesses said. They left South Florida early Saturday morning, then spent the rest of the day and much of the evening at Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure. There were no reports of problems there.
They spent the night at several hotels on International Drive before heading to Wet ‘n Wild on Sunday morning.Trouble began brewing shortly after lunch as students from various high schools began taunting one another.Ebony Galarza, a 16-year-old junior at Coral Gables High School, south of Miami, said at least one fight was between students from Deerfield High in Deerfield Beach and a high school in Palm Beach County.”I’m ready to go home,” said Galarza, as she waited for police to finish their investigation and allow the students to leave.Several students said they had been to Wet ‘n Wild with XtremeTrips in the past and never encountered problems.
Kayla Cox, a 16-year-old 10th-grader at Atlantic High, said she’s afraid that once the word gets out, “my mother might not let me come back.”

Hospital locked down during suicide threat www.privateofficer.com
HOLLAND MI April 15 2008 Holland Hospital was locked down for almost an hour Friday night after a man from Ohio drove into a hospital parking lot and threatened suicide.
Hospital spokesman Tim Breed said hospital security got a call from the Holland Police Department around 11 p.m. saying that the man was in the parking area “expressing a good degree of being distraught and possibly suicidal.”
Unsure if the man had a gun, police brought in a negotiator, and the situation was peacefully resolved within an hour when the man was convinced by police to receive help, ending the lockdown, Breed said.
The man, thought to be in his early 30s, was reunited with relatives who drove through the night from Ohio. The man and his family were en route back to Ohio by midday Saturday, Breed said.
“We can only venture a guess as to why this individual stopped in our parking lot — it seems to be random chance,” Breed said.

Mall officers nab robbery suspects www.privateofficer.com
Corpus Christi TX. April 15 2008
By;Rick McCann
Ntl. Assoc. Private Officers
www.privateofficer.com
Security officers notified city police that a robbery had occurred at an area mall and that they had several suspects in custody.
Responding officers found that mall security had the two suspected purse snatchers in custody early Monday afternoon.
Corpus Christi Police arrested the two 17 year old suspects, and said that a mall security officer had chased down one of the teens, and after some civilian bystanders also decided to take action.
Purse snatchers tend to like target petite and or elderly women. They feel like they’re at a greater advantage.
Police say Monday’s attempted robbery of an older woman didn’t work quite as the suspects expected primarily because there were witnesses not willing to let it happen.
Police say the mall security officer was assaulted by one of the suspects with a collapsible baton. He suffered scrapes and bruises, and was bleeding from his ear. As for the elderly woman, police say her arm was broken.
They believe there was a third teen involved in the purse snatching plot. He got away in a grey Chevy Cavalier. The two suspects were arrested on aggravated robbery charges.
The suspects names were not released nor was the name of the victim. Police did say that the security officers and other citizens who helped nabbed the two did an excellent job of detaining them until police could arrive.

College employee charged after porn found www.privateofficer.com
Las Vegas NV. april 15 2008
By: Bryan Hill
Security News Magazine
Authorities that after an investigation, they have arrested an administrative assistant at the College of Southern Nevada Thursday on charges of possession, receiving and transporting child pornography.
Harold Thrash, 50, a college employee since May 2002, worked at the Cheyenne campus in the School of Hospitality but traveled between the college’s two other campuses.
In December, police say that a security officer discovered images of child porn that had been downloaded and turned that information over to college police, CSN Police Chief Sandy Seda said.
It is alleged that Thrash used college computers to access child pornography images, according to the college.
College police brought in the FBI to assist in the case, Seda said. FBI and college police arrested Thrash on the college’s Charleston campus.
Thrash was an administrative assistant who provided “routine clerical assistance” and didn’t have direct contact with students, Seda said. He makes $31,424 a year.
Thrash, who could face other charges was placed on paid leave pending the outcome of his case in federal court.
