Police investigate shooting of shoplifter www.privateofficer.com

www.privateofficer.com Authorities from the Steubenville Police Department are investigating the shooting of a shoplifting suspect.
Police today identified the man as 56-year-old Michael Chapman who is charged with robbery.
According to authorities, just after 8:00 p.m. Friday, a Steubenville Police officer was dispatched to the Hollywood Shopping Plaza because of a shoplifter call
The tape of the 911 call that started it all was released and at first, it came across the lines like any other run, on any other night.
“Jefferson County 911, what is your emergency,” said the 911 dispatcher.
“A Lady at the Kroger told me to call, they have a shoplifter here,” said a 911 caller.
But in seconds, the voice on the wire gave more details of what they said went on.
“One of the people working here, this white guy just swung at her…,” said the 911 caller on the tape.
Then upon response to the scene, at the Kroger police said the pace picked up even more.
As the officer was pulling up to the store, Chapman took off and was chaed into nearby woods.
The police department’s press release stated that “the officer ‘engaged’ with the suspect and ended up discharging his duty weapon striking him one time.”
The suspect is recovering in a Pittsburgh hospital.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department and the Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation are also investigating the matter.
In the meantime, both the suspect and an officer are off the streets.
Police tell us the suspect is in stable condition, and the officer who fired the shot at him is on paid leave, but the department said the reasoning is strictly protocol
