Home Depot closes stores, 1300 employees out of a job www.privateofficer.com
Atlanta Ga. May 2 2008
So far, 2008 hasn’t been a banner year for Home Depot.
In January, the Atlanta-based home improvement retailer laid off 500 people from corporate headquarters
In February, it announced its first ever year over year sales decline.
In April, it announced the net loss of 970 jobs from reorganizing its human resources staff.
And today, it announced it is closing 15 stores, affecting 1,300 employees. Plus, the Home Depot is suspending the development of 50 stores. The 15 targeted stores are mostly in the Northeast and Midwest, from New Jersey to North Dakota. No Atlanta stores are scheduled to close.
“Closing a store is always a difficult decision because it affects both our people and our
communities,” Home Depot CEO Frank Blake said in a statement. “But, as with our decision to slow future store growth, this is the right decision and will bring long-term benefits to our associates and to our shareholders. … By building fewer stores, in the best locations, and making sure our existing stores are profitable, our company will be in a much stronger competitive position.”
The home improvement chain has blamed the slowdown in the housing market and the sluggish economy for its retail woes.
Home Depot will record a $586 million pre-tax charge related to the store closings and the 50 shelved stores. That includes $8 million for severance and $11 million for inventory markdowns. Home Depot hasn’t revised its earnings forecast for fiscal 2008 to reflect the $587 million charge. Earnings per share from continuing operations are still expected to decline 19-to-24 percent. Analysts have forecast earnings per share of $1.65 to $1.86 , down from $2.27 a year ago.
Home Depot said it will cut capital spending by $1 billion over the next three years and focus on existing stores, as well as possible share repurchases. Home Depot still expects to build 55 stores in 2008, 36 in the United States. The chain currently has 1,970 U.S. stores.
Ron DeFeo, a Home Depot spokesman, said the 15 stores slated to close will remain open for seven weeks and have liquidation sales. The stores’ management teams will be offered new jobs and the remaining employees can apply for jobs at other Home Depot stores. Employees that aren’t placed will receive severance pay.
Home Depot stock was up in inter-day trading Thursday to $30.18, up $1.38 over Wednesday’s close.

“The Wooded Rapist” caught in Nashville www.privateofficer.com
NASHVILLE, Tenn. May 2 2008 – A man suspected in at least 13 rape cases in Davidson, Williamson and Wilson counties, is now in police custody authorities reported late Thursday.
According to authorities, Robert Jason Burdick, 38, who is believed to be the “Wooded Rapist”, was arrested Thursday while traveling on Interstate 24 in Rutherford County, according to a Metro police news release.
Police said the South Nashville man eluded capture for 14 years. Police believe he raped a Wilson County teenager in February.
According to the news release, The Interstate Interdiction Unit of the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office made the stop “at the request of Metro and Brentwood detectives who received word shortly after 9 a.m. from the TBI Crime Laboratory that Burdick’s DNA matched biological samples recovered from many of the crime scenes,” according to the news release.
He was turned over to investigators from Metro, Brentwood, Wilson County, and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
Investigators executed a search warrant at his home where they collected evidence linking him to rape cases.
According to Metro police, the “Wooded Rapist” victimized women between 1994 and earlier this year.
On Monday morning, a Brentwood police officer stopped Burdick’s Jeep after police received a call about a suspicious person walking in the Meadowlake subdivision.
Burdick told the officer he had attended a party in the area and parked on the street. Officers say that he would not allow the officer to search his vehicle.
The officer, after recording Burdick’s information, allowed him to proceed and then forwarded the details to the Brentwood Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division.
Metro and Brentwood detectives have been working very closely together on the rape cases since 1999.
The traffic stop was viewed as a valuable break in the case.
Burdick was booked into the Metro Jail Thursday afternoon. He is being held without bond pending an appearance in criminal court.

http://www.privateofficer.com/ Police say that took Brian Anthony Reavis into custody and he has been arrested for the assault and rape of a 95-year-old woman in her home on Nun Street.
Officers responded to the address after the elderly woman was assaulted by a black male who fled the area.
Reavis, 41, is facing a number of charges including: kidnapping, rape, and burglary.
According to the Wimington Police Department, the lead investigator on the case, Detective Paul Verzaal obtained warrants for the arrest of Reavis Wednesday afternoon.
According to authorities, Revis barged into the residence and brutally assaulted the victim and some officers are calling it heartless with a few other choice words about their suspect.
Police decided to turn over the apprehension of the suspect to the specialized U.S Marshals Service Violent Fugitive Task Force who are accustomed to hunting down violent fleeing felons.
About 9:00 p.m. Wednesday night, a deputy marshal said that Reavis was taken into custody at his mother’s residence on South 7th Street.
He is in custody at the New Hanover County jail on $1million secured bond.
According to police, on Saturday, April 12, the victim was heading back inside her home from getting the morning paper when a man pushed his way in behind her, demanding money.
She handed over $20, but the man wanted more.
Authorities said he stole more cash and then forced her into her bedroom where he sexually and physically assaulted her.
The victim was treated at New Hanover Regional Medical Center for her injuries.

Police charge father, mother, grandmother in starvation death of child www.privateofficer.com
Nashville TN. May 2 2008– Metro police arrested the mother and grandmother of a 17-month-old boy who starved to death in January.
A Davidson County grand jury indictment charged 23-year-old Chisa Hughes with first-degree murder and two counts of aggravated child neglect for Jerald Hicks, Jr.’s death. The child’s grandmother, Katina Ballard, 49, was indicted on two counts of failure to report child abuse and one count of aggravated child neglect.
The women were arrested at juvenile court Wednesday morning when they planned to attend a hearing regarding the Hughes’ daughter.
The child’s father, 24-year-old Jerald Hicks was arrested in January on warrants charging criminal homicide and aggravated child neglect. Hicks is under indictment on charges of first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse, and two counts of aggravated child neglect.
According to an autopsy, Jerald Hicks, Jr. died of starvation and hypothermia after his father took him to Centennial Medical Center. Police said the child was dead on arrival and weighed 10 pounds. He appeared to be malnourished. His body temperature was so low it couldn’t be registered.
“He was extremely malnourished. He was in very, very poor condition and the mother should have known that condition existed and should have done something about it,” said Don Aaron, Metro police spokesman.
Hicks’ 31-month-old daughter was also sent to the hospital and later the Monroe Carell, Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt for evaluation. She was diagnosed with severe malnutrition.
Detectives learned that the father didn’t have heat in his apartment. The toddler’s mother did not live with Hicks, but she saw the children in January.
Police said their grandmother took care of her granddaughter sometime in December and failed to report that she was at risk.
“Starvation should not be occurring in Nashville, Tenn.,” Aaron said. “There are too many social services agencies. There are too many caring people in this city to ensure that a child will not starve, that a child will receive sustenance and the assistance needed to thrive
Hicks, Hughes and Ballard are in jail. Hicks and Hughes are being held without bond.

Wife, mother, prison escapee captured after 32 years www.privateofficer.com
SAN DIEGO CA. MAY 2 2008 The Carmel Valley woman who escaped from a Detroit prison and eluded the law for 32 years – before she was arrested Thursday – said she had a “very happy life here” during her years of freedom.
I have a wonderful family and I miss them very much,” Susan Lefevre said in a brief phone interview from Las Colinas jail Wednesday morning.
“I really wanted to keep this secret. I can’t believe everyone knows this now.”
Lefevre, 53, had been known in San Diego County as Marie Walsh, wife of Alan Walsh. The couple has three children and has lived in Carmel Valley for nearly 10 years.
She was arrested Thursday by the U.S. Marshal’s Service. Lefevre had been sentenced in 1975 to 10 to 20 years in prison for conspiracy and violation of drug laws.
Lefevre said she had been charged with conspiracy to sell a controlled substance. She said she was arrested when she was a teenager, after she and another man sold about $200 worth of drugs to an undercover agent.
However, Michigan authorities said Wednesday that Lefevre was a major drug trafficker whose drug-dealing operation was making about $2,000 a week selling heroin. Undercover officers bought from her at least twice and a search of her Saginaw apartment turned up $500 to $600 in cash, paraphernalia for cutting heroin and photos that showed she was acquainted with the “higher-ups” in the Saginaw drug world, said Michigan Department of Corrections spokesman Russ Marlan.
He said the sentence reflected the severity of her crimes.
“In 1975, you didn’t get 10 years for being a minor trafficker,” Marlan said.
Michigan state police believed that Lefevre used others to sell the drugs for her. However, she was not believed to be a heavy narcotic user, Marlan said.
Marshals’ Service officials said Lefevre served one year in the Detroit House of Corrections in Plymouth, Mich.
She escaped by walking away early the morning of Feb. 26, 1976, using a pass that allowed her to work at a clinic, Marlan said. Around 7:30 a.m., an hour after she left the prison grounds, the clinic called and said she did not show up for work.
A fugitive warrant for her arrest was issued the next day.
Marlan said it was not uncommon for the prisoners at the minimum security prison to be allowed to walk outside to go to a job or to do work on the grounds.
Lefevre was on the Michigan Department of Corrections’ most wanted list and was considered dangerous and possibly armed. The department also listed six aliases for her, including Susan Grham and Susan Lafure. The Michigan Department of Corrections Absconder Recovery Unit received an anonymous tip in late March that Lefevre might be in California, living as Marie Walsh, a Marshal’s Service spokesman said.
The Michigan agency investigated, with the aid of the Marshal’s Service. They obtained a copy of Marie Walsh’s thumb print from the California Department of Motor Vehicles and found it matched Lefevre’s thumbprint on record.
Authorities said Lefevre was “leading a normal life in a San Diego suburb. She was living in a nice house in an affluent neighborhood.”
She initially denied being Lefevre, authorities said, but admitted it when confronted with photographs and the fingerprint. She told marshals’ deputies her family had no idea of her past.
She was booked into Las Colinas county jail and is awaiting extradition to Michigan to serve the rest of her sentence.
Lefevre will be required to finish at least nine years of her sentence, Marlan said. Any mitigating circumstances about how and what she had done with her life since her escape would not be heard until she is up for parole, he said.
He said there is no appeal process unless a court intervenes, something Marlan said he has never seen happen.
“She was tried, convicted and sentenced to prison and she escaped,” Marlan said. “She’s got a prison sentence and she’s got to finish it.”

Security officer, students injured in small explosion www.privateofficer.com
Evergreen Wa. May 2 2008
Kyle T. Greene
Ntl. Assoc. Private Officers
www.privateofficer.com
Two Evergreen High School staff members and one student suffered minor burns shortly before 2 p.m., when a baggy filled with small fireworks exploded during a search of the student’s backpack.
Mark Osborne, dean of students, and Brian Nicholson, a school security officer, were taken by ambulance to Legacy Salmon Creek Hospital, after fire and police personnel converged on the east Vancouver campus.
The two men were treated and released, a hospital spokeswoman said.
The unnamed 17-year-old senior student, who was not transported for his minor burns, was released to his parents.
Fireworks are banned in Evergreen district schools. A school suspension or expulsion is likely, rather than any criminal charges, police said.
Officials would not comment on why or how the search was being conducted.
The explosion occurred in a staff prep area of the Freshman Academy, in the southeast wing of the 1,830-student school.
Vancouver Police Lt. John Chapman said the student had a baggy filled with about 40 snap-type fireworks, specifically, Black-Eyed Snap Peas. The devices are normally packed with a lubricant to prevent friction and ignition, he said.
The fireworks in the baggy had no such lubricant and exploded on a table top, Chapman said. No structural damage was reported.
“It was just really a loud bang,” Chapman said.
With the 2 p.m. dismissal bell so near, there was no school lockdown or safety announcement.
The immediate area was cordoned off, but students calmly exited the school.
A regional bomb squad was called in, but it was quickly determined there was no further threat.
It’s not highly unusual for a senior student to be in the freshman wing of the school, an Evergreen district spokeswoman said.

Authorities say that the former head of security at Virginia’s largest prison for women is now facing 30 counts of having carnal knowledge of inmates.
Patrick Owen Gee, 45, was indicted earlier this week and is facing a maximum of five years in prison on each charge.

A Marshfield woman is being charged with larceny after she was caught trying to shoplift $4,000 worth of merchandise from Kohl’s department store in Pembroke.
According to police, loss prevention agents spotted the woman, now identified as Eileen Pratt of Marshfield stuffing merchandise in bags. Security agents continued to follow her as she concealed item after item and tried leaving the store without paying for the merchandise.

Peeping Tom arrested three times in a week www.privateofficer.com
WEST DES MOINES, Iowa May 2 2008
By: Bryan Hill
Security News Magazine
www.privateofficer.com West Des Moines police said Thursday that they arrested a man for the third time this week on Thursday.
Police were called to a local mall where the complaintant told them that “someone had reported that there was a man in the restroom that was sticking a mirror under the stall partitions and doors to look at whoever was in the next stall,” said Sgt. Vince Valdez, of Des Moines police.
Police said Michael McGill, 49, of West Des Moines, admitted to the incident, saying he wanted to “look at people’s privates because it is fun.” He was charged with trespassing and criminal mischief and then released.
Wednesday, West Des Moines police were called to Valley West Mall, where again, police found McGill and again he was accused of the same type of behavior.
The victim fought off McGill, holding him until police arrived. McGill again admitted to investigators that he’d been watching kids in the play area, saying, “I’m a pedophile. I get excited by little boys.”
West Des Moines police arrested him and this time charged him with intent to commit sexual abuse and then released him.
“He’s overtly committing these acts and says he’s done them before, not only at Merle Hay Mall, but at Southridge Mall and other locations,” said Valdez.
Investigators in different parts of the city didn’t notice the pattern until Thursday, when they issued a warrant and arrested McGill again. This time, his bond soared to a $250,000. Police said he might be locked up, but this case is a reminder to practice vigilance.
“We want to make sure people are alert to any type of behavior that’s strange. You want to keep yourself safe and call us to assist in that,” said Lt. Cam Coppess, of West Des Moines police.
McGill admitted to another case of assault on a DART bus and he was arrested for trespassing at the Kaleidoscope Burger King restroom. The string of activities put those businesses and every mall in the metro on alert.
Thursday night, McGill remains in the Polk County Jail on $250,000 bond.

Shoplifter carjacks woman to flee www.privateofficer.com
AUGUSTA, G.A. May 2 2008
By: Rick McCann
Ntl. Assoc. Private Officers
North Augusta Public Safety Officers responded to an area department store in a bizarre case of theft and carjacking and police say that the suspect left her daughter behind as she tried to flee.
Police say that they arrested a 29-year old Hephzibah woman Wednesday night for shoplifting at the North Augusta Walmart and for carjacking.
Lt. Tim Pearson says Akisha Hempfield is being charged with carjacking, shoplifting and unlawful conduct to a child and officers say that charge alone carries a possible 10 years in prison.
Lt. Pearson says it all began to unfold at around 4 o’clock Wednesday afternoon when Walmart Loss Prevention Officers observed Hempfield on camera shoplifting items equaling less than 1000 dollars.
Officers say she had her one year old daughter with her and when she was approached by security, she handed her one year-old daughter to the Walmart Loss Prevention Officer. At this point police say that she bolted from the security people and took off running.
Officers chased her out into the parking lot and at this point Hempfield tried to get into a car in the Walmart parking lot, but the first one she tried was occupied.
Police say the desperate shoplifter then forced her way into another vehicle and pushed the lady inside the car aside.
Officers quickly surrounded her and were able to stop Hempfield in the parking lot and arrest her without further incident.
Lt. Pearson says the lady Hempfield pushed aside is fine and no one got hurt during the flight of the shoplifter.
Hempfield is being held at the Aiken County Detention Center. There was no word on where the child was taken to or what the bond for Hempfield was.

Police say that a man providing security and patrol for the Ramada Inn on Woodlawn Road has been arrested and charged with possession of a stolen firearm.
Police say that they discovered the security officer in uniform and armed and upon investigation found that he was not licensed to be a private security officer and that he had a handgun that had been reported stolen according to a computer check.
Authorities say Edward Andrew Corley, Jr., was working without a license, and that his application to be licensed was denied twice by the state.
Investigators say Corley had four guns and a crossbow in his car when he was arrested and one of those guns was stolen.
Police reports did not indicate if Corley was working for an agency or had been hired as a direct employee at the hotel.

A couple arrested Sunday at the Wal-Mart in D’Iberville is accused of trying to steal a big-screen TV.
Harrison County Sheriff Melvin Brisolara said Austin David Langley and Anna Jillene Smith, both 21, tried to leave the store on Sangani Boulevard with a 40-inch Samsung TV and a Hewlett-Packard LCD flat-panel monitor.
The couple allegedly told store personnel they wanted to return an item, and the sticker that was placed on that item was removed and placed on an item they tried to steal, Brisolara said. The couple was stopped at the door as they tried to leave with the electronic equipment in a buggy, the sheriff said.
Deputies charged Langley and Smith with felony shoplifting. The maximum penalty for conviction of felony shoplifting is five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
Justice Court Judge Albert Fountain set bond at $25,000 for Langley and at $10,000 for Smith. Both were in custody Monday afternoon at the Harrison County jail.
Smith lives on North 9th Street in Ocean Springs and Langley has a Theodore, Ala., address, according to a news release. The county jail docket lists Langley as also living on North 9th Street.
