NC officer named High School Resource Officer Of The Year www.privateofficer.com
Matthews NC May 13 2008
When you love your job, it shows. Such is the case for Matthews Police Officer Michelle Archer.
As Butler High School’s resource officer, the 42-year-old Archer is known for her friendly smile and camaraderie with the kids. But she can be tough too — everything a resource officer needs to be.
And for the second consecutive year, Archer has been honored with the High School Resource Officer of the Year award, given annually by Charlotte Mecklenburg Crime Stoppers.
She was recognized this year for her continued success as a role model and mentor for Butler students. She also was praised for her work in establishing a student Crime Stoppers Web site.
When all the kinks are worked out, students will be able to log on to the Web site, fill out an anonymous crime stopper report on Butler’s crime stopper page, then e-mail the report directly to Archer. The only identification required is a student ID number, and that’s just so Archer can find the student for an award if their tip ends up solving a crime.
Archer came to police work at age 32 after a stint in the Army and then a career at the Department of Social Services.
She joined the Matthews Police Department in 1998 and has worked as a school resource officer since 2001. After several years in elementary school, she moved to Butler and says she never wants to leave.
“When I decided at 16 that I wanted to be a police officer, it was based on a community police officer that came and talked to our school. I knew that’s what I wanted to do. Now I have found my calling. I am living my dream come true,” Archer says.
“I feel like every one of these 2,500 kids are mine. I play with them the same way I play with my kids at home. I call them my babies and I would lay down my life to protect them if I had to.”
She says the hardest part of her job is when she has to arrest a student.
“It’s so hard to put handcuffs on a kid, but at least I’ve learned not to cry anymore. I hate to take a student to jail, but that’s part of the job. And I do what I can to ask the courts to be as lenient as possible. I’m not trying to ruin their future, but there has to be consequences when they break the law,” Archer said.
Fortunately, arrests at Butler are few and far between. In fact, Archer says crime statistics as the school are down and students are taking a more active role in crime prevention.
Matthews Police Chief Rob Hunter says Archer is a role model for students and other officers as well.
“Officer Archer is the ideal model for an effective police officer in today’s society. She is dedicated to those she serves, she consistently strives to keep herself trained and in touch, she is compassionate yet absolute, and she loves what she does. You’ll not find another officer more committed to her charge — building strong relationships and keeping everyone safe,” Hunter said.
“This award serves to remind all of us not to take Michelle and the multitude of officers like her for granted.”

Security guard arrested for selling drugs www.privateofficer.com
Cincinnati Oh. May 13 2008
By: Rick McCann
Ntl. Assoc. Private Officers
Cincinnati Police responding to information about a drug dealing security guard went after suspected dealers at McMillan and Gilbert in Walnut Hills late Friday afternoon. According to a police staement, officers say their main target was the man hired to protect customers at the Deveroe’s clothing store.
Police say that a security guard named Charles Conard is on duty daily at the Deveroe’s at McMillian and Gilbert and most people who live in the area are very familiar with him but not everyone can believe what the guard is doing at the store.
“It’s crazy,” said Monique Smith, Walnut Hills. “I didn’t know he was doing that. I thought he was just security at Deveroe’s.”
Officers conducted an investigation of the activity involving Conrad and others on that street corner and soon moved in and arrested Conard in his First Choice Security uniform, complete with badge.
Undercover Vortex officers say they’ve been watching Conard sell pot to people as he was working security. He even allegedly sold to an undercover cop posing as a Deveroe’s customer.
“Here’s a person who is entrusted by the public to protect people, but really what he was doing was using the gun and badge for profit,” said Lt. Bruce Hoffbauer, Cincinnati Police Vortex. “In this case it was the selling of drugs.”
Police say the dealer was dangerous, packing this 9mm handgun and three cartridges of ammunition.
Police say Conard even chased off competing drug dealer. They say this had the potential to turn into a turf war. Officers say that it could have turned into a very dangerous situation.
“If push came to shove, if something didn’t go the way it was planned, he had a firearm at hand, it could have turned very tragic,” said Lt. Hoffbauer.
A Deveroe’s regional manager had no comment Friday night.
First Choice Security wouldn’t talk to media about its guard either.
The store manager, Kennisha Catlin, was also arrested for having marijuana in her purse.
Two other men were arrested in the bust.
Police say they found Lovell Brown, 35, with $3,100 in cash and a scale used to weigh drugs. Police say they also arrested Michael Simms, 30, after they found that he had 19 baggies of crack cocaine on him.
The shop was shut down Friday, after the Vortex drug bust in and outside of the shop.

A girl’s softball game in Maury County turned violent when a coach took on an umpire and began swinging.
Columbia Police were called to a youth softball game when things got out of hand and talking turned to fighting.
Witnesses said Jonathan Allen Rose was arguing with umpire David Ray Kelley over a play during the 10-year-olds’ game.
Kelley allegedly called Rose a liar several times, and that’s when Rose punched the umpire – knocking him unconscious.
Police and medical personnel responded to the scene and Rose was taken into custody and has been arrested and charged with assault.

Shoplifters arrested for trespassing after warning www.privateofficer.com
Staten Island NY May 13 2008
She may be barred from the Staten Island Mall, but that didn’t stop her from shoplifting more than $1,000 worth of designer sunglasses there, authorities allege.
Charlene Thompson, 26, of the 100 block of Park Hill Avenue in Clifton, was caught on video April 9 stealing the glasses along with another woman, according to court papers.
Both Ms. Thompson and her mother, also Charlene, have a history of shoplifting arrests at the Mall.
They have been accused on separate occasions of using shopping bags lined with foam, silver duct tape and aluminum foil to get past store security sensors.
In December 2004, the older Ms. Thompson fell over a second-floor railing into a fountain in the Staten Island Mall as she allegedly tried to elude guards who suspected her of shoplifting baby clothes from Macy’s.
And earlier that year, the younger Ms. Thompson tried to fight off police detectives who were coming to arrest her mother on a shoplifting charge, police alleged. She allegedly bit one detective and tried to choke him with his tie.
In February 2005, the Mall’s security department issued a “barring notice” against the younger Ms. Thompson, banning her from the premises for five years, court papers show.
She was arrested Wednesday afternoon and charged with fourth-degree grand-larceny, fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property and third-degree criminal trespass.

After playing a last hand at a blackjack table Sunday at the Casino Queen, a 27-year-old Cahokia man grabbed some poker chips and tried to run, police said.
Police say that he didn’t get far. Alert security personnel nabbed him before he could get off the boat.
Security officers grabbed William McGhee, of 403 E. Fifth St. and took him into custody and notified city police.
He was held overnight at the East St. Louis jail and charged Monday with theft over $300.
His bail is set at $40,000, and he is expected to be transferred today to the St. Clair County Jail.
Police responded to the Casino Queen, located at 200 S. Front St. at 10:12 a.m. Sunday to investigate the theft, Detective Michael Floore said. Police learned McGhee had played his last hand for $25.
“He walked away from the table, then he turned around, went back to it and grabbed 20 purple chips valued at $500 and one white one valued at $5,” Floore said.
Police say that it appears the man acted alone in the theft.

Street Sweepers Now Issue Parking Tickets www.privateofficer.com
Chicago IL.May 13 2008
By: Rick McCann
Ntl. Assoc. Private Officers
www.privateofficer.com
You may recognize the name Affiliated Computer Services, and know that it’s a data processing and call center employ more than 3,000 in Central and Eastern Kentucky.
But recently the company has shifted gears and now motorists in Chicago will know the company for something else: law enforcement. Parking tickets to be more precise.
The Texas company just signed a $7 million contract to install cameras on Chicago street sweepers to record the license numbers of illegally parked cars.
“As the sweeper moves down the street, the automated system takes pictures of the violating vehicles, transmits images and data for image verification, and interfaces with the Chicago Department of Revenue to mail violation notices,” ACS says.
Faster than they can say “No parking zone,” Chicago drivers have got a ticket or a summons in their mailboxes.
ACS says this is “the world’s first application” of law-enforcement cameras on street sweepers but probably not the last as the new concept will be marketed to other municipalities that have street sweepers deployed on it’s city streets.
The company isn’t saying what other uses they have cooked up for their software but one might guess that it’s use could be installed on school buses to monitor speeding cars and drivers who pass the bus when the stop arm is down and the bus is off loading. Or maybe use it’s cameras on city buses to ticket those parked in bus loading zones and so on.
The uses seem limitless and so does the future for ACS.
One thing is for sure: Chicago drivers will never again view street sweeping as a harmless public service.

A store security officer is being praised today for saving a 2-year-old child who was left unattended in a vehicle on a warm Sunday afternoon.
According to police, the security agent spotted the boy at 3:38 p.m. in a vehicle parked at the Sears store at 800 S. State St.
The security officer could see he was perspiring, even though the weather was overcast and the car window was left slightly open, said Lt. Gary Young with the Salt Lake Police Department.
At that point the security officer made the decision to break out the car window and pulled out the boy, who was found to be suffering from heat exposure. Young said the boy was left in the car for about an hour.
“I guess the parents forgot to read the rule book, ” Young said. “One of the rules: Don’t leave your kids in the car. I guess they forgot that.” Police said that the boy was taken to Primary Children’s Medical Center as a precaution.
Young said that there was no arrest made at the time of the incident but that the district attorney will investigate this further to determine if charges will be filed against the child’s parents.
Names of the security officer or the childs parents were not released by authorities.
In April, a Kearns woman left her 18-month-old son Myles in her car while she was unloading groceries, then forgot about him.
When she came back three hours later, he was unconscious and was later died of heat-related causes.
It was not immediately known Monday if the child had been released from the hospital yet.

Securitas security officer gunned down www.privateofficer.com
from; (KAIT)
TRUMANN, AR May 13 2008 An early morning shooting in Trumann on Monday leaves one man dead and another in police custody charged with Capital Murder.
Trumann Police say Monday around 4:30 a.m. 61-year-old Bruce Pennington of Trumann arrived at Columbia Forrest Products for his job as an engineer. Instead of going in to work however, police say security video shows him pulling his truck up next to the security building, getting out of his truck and going up to the building.
Police say that’s when the victim, 26-year-old Securitas security guard Dorman “Ray” Cooper, met Pennington at the door and was shot.
“The security guard came to the door as he exited his truck. They were in a foot or so of each other apparently. He was shot at point blank range. There was one shot to the chest and another one to the eye,” said Police Chief Larry Blagg.
Police say Pennington shot Cooper twice. Cooper was shot once in the chest and once in the head. Police say Pennington then got back into his truck and drove himself to the Trumann Police Department and turned himself in to police.
Trumann Police Chief Larry Blagg told Region 8 News that Cooper was pronounced dead just before 5:00 a.m. Police are still investigating this crime and although they don’t know the motive at this time, Blagg said it seems to be very deliberate.
“I don’t think it’s a random act that he just came out and found somebody to shoot,” said Blagg.
Another security guard who works with the security company Securitas told Region 8 news that Cooper had worked there for about a year. Police Chief Blagg said that the suspect had moved to Trumann working for Columbia Forrest Products for about a year. Blagg said that Pennington is a member of upper management for the company working as an engineer.
Blagg said according to Pennington’s boss, he never caused any problems. This shooting is a shock to the company as well as the suspect’s family.
At his probable cause hearing Monday afternoon Pennington was officially charged with one count of Capital Murder and no bond was set. Pennington will be held at the Poinsett County Jail. His next day in court will be on June 23rd.
