You may recognize the name Affiliated Computer Services, and know that it’s a data processing and call center employ more than 3,000 in Central and Eastern Kentucky.
But recently the company has shifted gears and now motorists in Chicago will know the company for something else: law enforcement. Parking tickets to be more precise.
The Texas company just signed a $7 million contract to install cameras on Chicago street sweepers to record the license numbers of illegally parked cars.
“As the sweeper moves down the street, the automated system takes pictures of the violating vehicles, transmits images and data for image verification, and interfaces with the Chicago Department of Revenue to mail violation notices,” ACS says.
Faster than they can say “No parking zone,” Chicago drivers have got a ticket or a summons in their mailboxes.
ACS says this is “the world’s first application” of law-enforcement cameras on street sweepers but probably not the last as the new concept will be marketed to other municipalities that have street sweepers deployed on it’s city streets.
The company isn’t saying what other uses they have cooked up for their software but one might guess that it’s use could be installed on school buses to monitor speeding cars and drivers who pass the bus when the stop arm is down and the bus is off loading. Or maybe use it’s cameras on city buses to ticket those parked in bus loading zones and so on.

The uses seem limitless and so does the future for ACS.
One thing is for sure: Chicago drivers will never again view street sweeping as a harmless public service.
