Barry Bonds Indicted For Lieing To Grand Jury www.privateofficer.com
SAN FRANCISCO CA. May 14 2008 Barry Bonds was charged in a new indictment Tuesday with 15 felony counts alleging he lied to a grand jury when he denied knowingly using performance-enhancing drugs and that he hampered the federal government’s doping investigation.
The career home run leader originally was indicted in November by a federal grand jury on four counts of perjury and one count of obstruction of justice.
The new indictment doesn’t add any new alleged falsehoods.
The case against Bonds is still built on whether he lied when he told the grand jury that his personal trainer Greg Anderson never supplied him with steroids and human growth hormone.
Bonds’ next hearing already had been scheduled for June 6 before the new indictment was unsealed, but Ruby said it is unclear whether Bonds’ will be expected to enter a plea then.
The Major League Baseball Players Association said last week it was investigating whether to file a collusion grievance against teams for not pursuing Bonds, who became a free agent when the Giants decided they didn’t want him back after 15 seasons.
The 43-year-old outfielder, a seven-time NL MVP, says he wants to play this year and his agent claims no team has made an offer for the 14-time All-Star. Bonds hit 28 homers last year to raise his total to 762, seven more than Hank Aaron’s previous record.

Hosital security guards charged with theft from patients www.privateofficer.com
Jersey City NJ May 14 2008
By: Rick McCann
Ntl. Assoc. Private Officers
www.privateofficer.com
After an internal investigation and an investigation by the detectives of the Jersey City police department two former security guards at the Jersey City Medical Center go on trial later this month for allegedly stealing cash and other valuables from patients worth $4,800, according to hospital and law enforcement officials.
Jersey City residents Charles C. Wilson, 30, of Graham Street, and Mark Beaufort, 36, of Boyd Street, once employees of the hospital’s security department have been charged with conspiracy to commit theft by unlawful taking, and conspiracy to commit theft by failure to make proper disposition with property received – third-degree crimes that could send both to prison for years.
These charges are the result of investigations conducted by the Jersey City Medical Center and the Jersey City Police Department that began in December and concluded in early January, police said.
Neither the two former security guards, who are out on bail, nor their attorneys, could be reached to comment.
Their trial begins May 22, officials said.
Shirley Gierbolini recently learned the former security guards allegedly stole $600 from her deceased father, along with a ring, a wood bracelet, and a silver pocket knife.
“They looked at him like he was nothing,” Gierbolini said about the former guards. “It’s a lack of respect for the dead.”
Police are not sure if there are other victims and are continuing their investigation.
In the meantime the two are free on bond waiting for their trial to begin.
In a statement, hospital officials said they began an internal investigation when they realized the wallet of Luis Gierbolini, Shirley’s father, was missing. “The hospital filed charges against two individuals and terminated their employment,” according to the statement.

Police kill two after intense shoot-out www.privateofficer.com
SAN JACINTO, Calif May 14 2008
By: Rick McCann
Ntl. Assoc. Private Officers
www.privateofficer.com
What started as a call of a security officer shot at an area casino ended with an intense hour long shootout between sheriff deputies and two people who were later killed by the officers..
Riverside County sheriff’s deputies initially received calls that the security guard was shot and wounded at the Soboba Casino, but when deputies arrived they discovered that the guard’s shack was hit but the man was not wounded.
As deputies were investigating the shooting the suspects fled from the property in a vehicle and headed onto an Indian Reservation and Idylwild National Forest east of the casino and into the hills.
Sgt. Dennis Gutierrez stated that deputies pursued the two and engaged them in an intense gunbattle. SWAT and a sheriff’s helicopter joined the shooting and the suspects opened fire and shot at the helicopter at least six times but missed.
The more than hourlong gunbattle ended with two suspects down, the sergeant said at the scene, adding that deputies were investigating several crime scenes, including a parking lot where a sheriff’s patrol car was struck by the suspects’ gunfire.
No deputies were injured.
The security officer also did not appear to be injured according to authorities on scene.
Authorities did not immediately release the identities of the dead suspects.
An area television report said a man and woman were killed by deputies during the shoot-out.
The sheriff’s department is investigating what promoted the shooting at the casino and it may have been an attempted robbery but investigators aren’t sure as the investigation continues.

Fake fireman gives safety lessons at schools www.privateofficer.com
Nashville TN May 14 2008
By: Rick McCann
Ntl. Assoc. Private officers
The Nashville Fire Department says that it has known for years that someone who is not a firefighter with the city, has been parading around schools and daycares giving fire safety lessons and pretending to be one of them. They hadn’t heard about him for awhile and thought that he had given up his “firefighting career” or moved away, but then came the request to verify his employment from someone who says the man claimed to be a firefighter since 1995. Nashville fire department personnel even know that the man has a criminal record.
Some Nashville firefighters said Gregory K. Pillow has been visiting schools and day cares and offering fire safety lessons for the past 18 years.
And, fire department officials said, no one has ever bothered to check his credentials.
It’s very frustrating in that people tend to relax when they think they’re in midst of firefighters or paramedics,” said Nashville Fire Department spokesman Charles Shannon.
Firefighters recently received a memo from the deputy chief warning about Pillow and his impersonations.
In the memo, Chief William Curran talks about calls from people with day care centers asking specifically for Pillow to come and speak.
There’s also a mention in the memo of a woman wanting to send a “thank you” note after Pillow spoke to a group in 2005.
The memo about Pillow has been distributed to fire departments and various agencies including Bethlehem Centers of Nashville.
“Because we deal with precious lives, we always make sure people are who they say they are,” said Bethlehem Centers of Nashville representative Kimberly James.
Nashville firefighters are working with Metro police in case. According to the memo, the fire department has issued security warnings to area schools.
Firefighters said that unfortunately, it’s easy to get uniforms that look official at a number of stores.
Michael Hills, who said he is Pillow’s fraternity brother from college at Tennessee State University, said he and his friends are completely shocked by the accusations. He said Pillow majored in criminal justice and, as far as he knows, Pillow really is a firefighter in a small town, but he declined to identify the town.
“What I can tell you is, he did go to a training academy” Hills said. “He also worked for a fire department.”
According to police records, the majority of Pillow’s arrests have been on charges of domestic assault and related probation violations. Tennessee Department of Correction spokeswoman Dorinda Carter said Pillow was convicted of felony aggravated assault in 2003 and served some of a three-year sentence in a local jail.
Police spokeswoman Kristin Mumford said the fraud unit is investigating the impersonation reports. She said they are not aware of any other allegations against Pillow.
Metro Nashville Public Schools spokeswoman Olivia Brown said they have had no reports that Pillow was ever in their schools.
The fire department is notifying area schools and day cares about the issue. They sent along a picture of Pillow and a number to call if anyone needs to confirm a speaker.
“It’s important for schools and day cares to check credentials,” Nashville Fire spokesman Charles Shannon said. “We do not solicit opportunities to go into day cares and schools for fire safety programs. If someone is calling and showing up on their doorsteps, that should be a red flag.”

Security guard company, towing service accused of auto thefts www.privateofficer.com
Oxnard CA. May 14 2008
Oxnard police have arrested three people on suspicion of robbery and grand theft auto after an investigation of alleged illegal towing practices.
Two of those arrested — Bryan Keith Eckenrode, 30, of Ojai and Bryan Linnaeus Booher, 32, of Camarillo — are tow-truck drivers for Buena Towing of Ventura, police said. The third, Tanya Marie Miranda, 30, of Oxnard, is a security guard for Gold Coast Security in Ventura, which provided security at several privately owned parking lots where some of the tows occurred, according to police.
The Friday arrests came after a nine-week investigation by Oxnard police of alleged “predatory towing,” in which a towing company illegally removes vehicles and sometimes overcharges to release them to their owners, police said.
The state passed a law against such practices in 2007 to protect consumers, Oxnard traffic Sgt. Randey Cole said Monday.
The investigation came after police received numerous complaints from owners that their vehicles were being illegally taken, Cole said. Police believe there are more than 140 victims.
Cole said tow-truck drivers would sometimes hook up a vehicle parked on private property without waiting one hour after it was parked, or lift a car up on the truck without getting permission from the property owner — both violations of state law.
After a vehicle had been raised, tow-truck drivers would sometimes refuse to give it back even if the owner agreed to pay half the towing fee — something the law entitles vehicle owners to do, Cole said. Owners would instead have to go down to the tow yard, where they would be charged the full $143. If they went after hours, they would also be charged an additional $70 “gate fee” to get their vehicles released, Cole said.
Oxnard police said they served search warrants Friday at Gold Coast Security and Buena Towing. Don Clobes, owner of Gold Coast Security, could not be reached for comment Monday. A dispatcher who answered the phone at Buena Towing declined to comment.
Ron Bamieh, a former senior deputy district attorney with the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office who now represents Clobes, said it was disgraceful that police and prosecutors should target two tow-truck drivers and a security guard.
“They are going after hard-working people when their apparent target is someone else,” Bamieh said. “It’s not the right thing to do, not morally, not ethically, not legally.”
Bamieh said authorities might have targeted the three “because they have less resources to defend themselves.”
Chris Harman, a senior deputy district attorney in the consumer and environmental protection division, would not comment on the case Monday because the investigation was ongoing.
Harman did say, however, that the Legislature passed the law against predatory towing to protect motorists, many of whom were being left stranded after their vehicles had been improperly towed.
“Taking away their vehicle without authorization put drivers in a pretty bad place,” Harman said.
Cole said police parked a decoy vehicle in a downtown parking lot in Oxnard as part of their investigation. He said it didn’t take long for a tow-truck driver to hoist the vehicle onto a truck. Undercover officers tried to recover the car at the scene “but were told they would have to pick it up at the yard,” Cole said.
In addition, the tow-truck driver failed to make a reasonable effort to find the vehicle’s owner before towing it, Cole said, another violation of the law.

Shoplifting nets man over $100,000 www.privateofficer.com
Cleveland Oh. May 14 2008

Ntl. Assoc. Private Officers
www.privateofficer.com
Cleveland man with a history of felony arrests told police he didn’t care he was being arrested for theft because he had made more than $100,000 with his ruse.
Richard S. Gratz, 32, of the 3200 block of E. 57th St., was videotaped opening a Little Tykes bike box in the toy department of Super Kmart on Leavitt Road, removing the bike and filling the box with expensive electronics he had picked up from around the store, according to a police report.
Then he picked up some packing tape from elsewhere in the store and resealed the box.
But then he got a phone call and didn’t take it.
Instead, he picked up a TV, put it in his cart and covered it with clothes. He wheeled the TV near an exit and put it on a shelf.
He then walked through the checkout lines with no merchandise like he was leaving the store, only to go back over to get the TV, put it in a cart and leave.
Gratz was charged with theft and possession of criminal tools. He also had two warrants out for his arrest.
Police believe he stole $752 worth of merchandise Saturday and tried to steal another $3,486. They also believe he took more than $2,000 worth of goods on Friday using the same system, which is why security paid special attention to him when he arrived in the store Saturday, according to a police report.

OxyContin overdoses kill 16 in one county www.privateofficer.com
BARROW COUNTY, Ga. May 14 2008 – Investigators have started a massive drug crackdown after the recent deaths of 16 people in one county alone. Most died because of reactions to the powerful prescription painkiller OxyContin.
In Barrow County in just over three months, 16 people have died from drug overdoses. The chief cause is a drug that was designed to help cancer patients and has the addictive power of heroin.
Authorities have seized nearly 4,000 prescription pills, including OxyContin and Hydrocodone. Officials said the seizures amount to well over $100,000 in drugs.
People are coming in and getting multiple prescriptions of the drugs and using them and selling them on the street to make money,” said Chief Deputy Murray Kogod with the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office.
A single OxyContin pill can be sold for $50. Dozens in Barrow County have been arrested for either buying or selling drugs. But 16 have died from overdoses — 11 of those by prescription drugs.
Addiction counselor Bob Davis told Channel 2’s Tom Regan that pain medicine abuse is rampant in Barrow and in other areas of metro Atlanta. Davis said the addict doesn’t realize when he’s about to overdose.
“Probably the result of either snorting the drug or using an IV or combining it with some other drug,” said Davis.
A Barrow County agency that helps abused and neglected children said a lot more parents of the children are addicted to prescription drugs.
“The parents are usually sleeping or high or out getting the drugs,” said child advocate Cyndi White.
Authorities said some of those using prescription drugs may lie to their doctors about their condition to get the drugs. Many others are ordering the drugs on the Internet.
More arrests are expected in the investigation.

Airport security breach leaves TSA officer in hot water www.privateofficer.com
Buffalo NY. May 14 2008
A federal Transportation Security Administration officer at Buffalo Niagara International Airport has been taken off active duty following a Sunday afternoon security breach.
The unidentified worker is accused of failing to spot a passenger who bypassed the security checkpoint at about 4:15 p. m. Sunday and entered the airport’s gate area via the exit passageway. Video surveillance of the exit corridor shows the passenger entering the exit lane in full view of the staffer, according to airport sources.
“The TSA security officer working the exit lane has been immediately removed from the duty position and is currently receiving retraining,” Lara Uselding the agency’s spokeswoman, said in a written statement.
Hundreds of departing and arriving travelers found themselves in limbo for more than 30 minutes, and about half a dozen flights were delayed
Uselding declined to comment on whether the employee will face disciplinary action. The JetBlue passenger, described only as a woman in her late 50s, will face no charges for what’s being called “an honest mistake.”
TSA and airport representatives became aware of the breach after the traveler informed an airline employee she had gotten to the gate without being screened. That admission triggered the evacuation of all passengers from the gate area to the airport’s ticketing hall and a security sweep by Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority police officers and canine teams.
“The passenger was escorted to the security checkpoint and interviewed by NFTA. Out of an abundance of caution, TSA closed the security checkpoint at 4:27 p. m., and the terminals were evacuated in order to rescreen passengers,” Uselding said in her statement.
Passengers on arriving flights were kept onboard while the sweep was conducted. The checkpoint reopened at 5:08 p. m., and affected travelers were all back on their way by 6 p. m.
NFTA spokesman C. Douglas Hartmayer said NFTA police and staff did everything they could to speed the “gate resterilization process.”
“We made a conscious decision to sweep the West Concourse first, so TSA could restart the screening process and have a secure space to direct passengers. While the breach did disrupt travel schedules, nobody missed their flights,” Hartmayer said.

Three arrested for shoplifting www.privateofficer.com

www.privateofficer.com Mary Gallas, 27, of Medford was arrested at Filene’s Basement and charged with larceny over $250 after being apprehended with over $300 worth of stolen clothing, Deputy Police Chief Russell Jenkins said.
Officers Kevin Timulty and Ted Querzoli arrested Gallas on the evening of May 7 after loss prevention observed her on surveillance cameras concealing the clothing while hiding behind a clothes rack, Jenkins said.
Gallas was confronted after exiting the store and setting off the security alarm, which was activated by the security sensors attached to the stolen clothing.
Police also made a second shoplifting arrest in a different theft case. Police said that they have arrested Tarus L. Veal, 35, of Mattapan and Rodney L. Martin, 56, of Roslindale were arrested on the afternoon of May 11 after Veal stole over $500 worth of merchandise from K-Mart on Grossman Drive, Deputy Police Chief Russell Jenkins told the Forum.
Officer Robert Joseph stopped the Buick Le Sabre being operated by Martin on Union Street after receiving a description of the vehicle from loss prevention.
“Both men were checked for warrants, and both had default warrants for larceny related offenses,” Jenkins said.
Veal had a total of six warrants for larceny, drug offenses, and assault and battery. One warrant was for a previous offense at K-Mart earlier this year.
Veal was arrested on the morning of Jan. 28 after he was stopped outside the store after he exited without paying for three bottles of perfume. He handed the perfume over to loss prevention and then fled behind the store and scaled a six-foot chain link fence along the MBTA train tracks. Officer Paul Campbell saw Veal walking down the tracks toward the Red Line train platform and watched as he boarded a train bound for Boston. After officers apprehended Veal on the train after having the train’s departure from the station delayed, he was charged with shoplifting and trespassing on the train tracks.
Veal and Martin were arrested on the warrants, and Veal was additionally charged with larceny over $250 after loss prevention confirmed that he was the only one to enter the store and steal the merchandise.
The stolen merchandise was not recovered, Jenkins said.

A local Walmart employee is out of a job after police say she used one of her customer’s debit cards.
On Friday police say the Walmart employee, Monique Alceme went shopping.
The only problem is she wasn’t using her debit card.
Police say she was using Tolgar Caliskan’s, a Lantana resident who was shopping there after midnight Friday.
Investigators say Alceme bought $192.40 worth of merchandise and attempted to purchase a $100 gift card, but the gift card transaction was declined.
Caliskan was contacted by his bank Friday.
He says he then contacted the Boynton Beach Police Department. Police say they contacted Alceme Saturday at Walmart.
Investigators say she admitted to the crime and turned over the purchased items and Caliskan’s card.
Alceme was arrested and faces numerous charges in this incident. Police do not know if there are any other victims or if this was the only incident that alceme was involved in.
Monique Alceme could not be reached for comment Monday.
Walmart spokesman Phillip Keeene says Alceme is no longer an employee of the company.

Ntl. Assoc. Private Officers
http://www.privateofficer.com/ Investigators from the Jacksonville police say that an 80-year-old man died Monday after falling on an escalator at the Avenues Mall.
According to the police report, rescue personnel were called to the mall about 3:30 p.m. when Sherwin Sharan reportedly fell down the escalator.
He was treated on scene and then transported to Baptist South Medical Center, where he died. A doctor told police Sharan had possible internal injuries.
Sharan’s wife told police she was waiting for her husband in the parking lot and became concerned when he never came out. She said she went in and found him being treated by Jacksonville Fire-Rescue personnel.
She told police she was told Sharan had fallen on the escalator.
Sharan’s wife said that he was in good health and the couple had just celebrated their 52nd anniversary.
“He was quite the character,” said Eva Hopkins, apartment manager and friend. “It just was such a joy to have them move in here. They were actually a big part of our community.”
On Tuesday, Simon Properties, owners of the Avenues Mall, released the following statement:
“We are deeply saddened by this news, and our hearts go out to Mr. Sharan’s family and friends. Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time.”
Investigators are continuing to look into his death but say that right now it looks to be an accident.
