Security officer shoots club employee www.privateofficer.com
Columbus Oh May 24 2008
A security officer shot a disgruntled former employee of a North Side strip club three times this morning after Columbus police say the woman drove her sport utility vehicle into several parked cars and a co-worker.
Ashley Hildreth, 23, was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence after the 2:20 a.m. incident in the parking lot of The X Gentleman’s Club at 6225 Sunderland Dr.
The security officer is also a part-time police officer in Kirkersville in Licking County. His name was not released. The co-worker was treated for bumps and bruises.
Police gave this account:
Hildreth had been fired from the nightclub several weeks ago and returned Thursday night to try to get her job back. Managers agreed to give her another shot.
After several hours, she began arguing with co-workers, and managers fired her again and escorted her out of the club.
The security guard and a male employee watched Hildreth get into her SUV. She drove into two vehicles and then drove directly at them.
She ran over a curb and into a flower bed, striking and knocking down the co-worker. Hildreth then backed up, hit another car and moved forward. At that point, the security officer fired his gun at the SUV.
Police are investigating whether Hildreth was driving directly at the security officer when the shots were fired; bullet holes could be seen in the side of her SUV.
She was struck three times — in the buttocks, the thigh and heel — and circled the parking lot, crashing into two more cars before stopping, police said.
She was taken to Riverside Methodist Hospital and is expected to recover.
Police said Hildreth’s blood-alcohol level was 0.172 percent, more than twice the limit at which a motorist is presumed drunk in Ohio.
Police say that the investigation is continuing and depending on their determination, criminal charges could be brought against the security officer for shooting a person when his life was not in danger.

Man claims “Dog The Bounty Hunter” owes him millions www.privateofficer.com
NEW YORK CITY NY May 24 2008 An actor who says he created the “Dog the Bounty Hunter” reality TV program has sued the show’s producers for at least $5 million that he claims they owe him in royalties, salary and other compensation.
Boris Krutonog of Los Angeles says the A&E Television Networks and others failed to pay him for the fourth season of the show as its creator and co-executive producer. Filming for the fifth season recently began.
The Honolulu-based show’s producers also have failed to give Krutonog accountings of money earned from home video, TV syndication and other sources, according to his papers filed this week in Manhattan’s state Supreme Court.
Krutonog also complains in court papers that he was the target of “abusive, violent and outrageous conduct” and “episodes of psychotic behavior by” the show’s stars, Duane “Dog” Chapman and his wife Beth.
Krutonog says A&E, television producer David Houts and his companies, Hybrid Films Inc. and D&D Television Productions Inc., breached their contract with him. He seeks compensatory damages and unspecified punitive damages.
On Wednesday, Houts referred questions about Krutonog’s claims to A&E. The networks’ spokesman, Dan Silberman, said he could not comment on pending litigation.
Krutonog, a Russian-born actor who had roles in “Air Force One,” “The Hunt for Red October” and “The Italian Job,” says in court papers that he introduced himself to “Dog” Chapman in 1995.
Believing that Chapman’s colorful life and exploits could be the basis of a movie or a TV show, Krutonog signed contracts with Chapman and received the exclusive right to develop the program, court papers say.
Chapman’s adventures included a raid into Mexico in 2003 to capture serial rapist and fugitive Andrew Luster. Chapman and his crew had faced criminal charges there because of the abduction but a Mexican judicial panel dismissed the case.
Between 1995 and 2003, Krutonog developed what became “Dog the Bounty Hunter,” court papers say. They say that to get his consent to produce and air the show, A&E agreed to pay him as co-executive producer “for the life of the program.”
The show was pulled off the air in November after Chapman was heard in a taped telephone conversation using a racial slur to refer to his son’s girlfriend, who is black. Last week, Chapman and A&E executives announced the return of the show with Chapman saying he was “ashamed” of his racial remarks.

Man may have been burned alive www.privateofficer.com
ATLANTA GA. May 24 2008
By: Bryan Hill
Ntl. Assoc. Private Officers
http://www.privateofficer.com/ Police are investigating the death of a person found in a burned car in the parking lot of an auto parts store in southwest Atlanta.
Authorities were called around 2:30 a.m. Friday to put out a car fire. fire department officials say that they found the remains of abody in the trunk of that car and notified the Atlanta police.
Police Lt. Keith Meadows says both the victim and the car had been burned. He says that right now it appears as though the victim might have been alive when the fire started.
Atlanta police detectives say the four-door car’s distinguishing features including identification markings are almost all burned beyond recognition due to the intensity of the fire.
Meadows said that they don’t know if the bidy was male or female, race or much else right now and that the body has been sent to the medical examiner to try to determine the victim’s identity.
Authorities would not release much information and say that they don’t have much to go on right now.

Constable, security company owner faces serious charges www.privateofficer.com
from TylerPaper.com
Tyler TX. May 24 2008
It’s my precinct,” Smith County Precinct 1 Constable Henry Jackson is known to say — however, 10 indictments that led to his arrest Friday may cost him that precinct.
Wearing his uniform, Jackson, who has served as constable for nine years, was led into the Smith County Jail Friday morning. He had been arrested on seven tampering with governmental record charges and three official oppression/sexual harassment charges. He was stopped by Texas Department of Public Safety troopers driving at a “high rate of speed” in Van Zandt County.
Jackson, 55, did not say a word as he was escorted into the jail. His face allowed little expression. He was released later Friday on bonds totaling $425,000.
Jackson, who served as a Tyler Police Department reserve officer before he was elected to his current office, was charged with seven second-degree felony counts of tampering with a governmental record, for which he faces two to 20 years in prison for each charge if convicted.
The tampering charges arise from alleged false filings made by Jackson regarding his private security company Fail Safe Security Agency, said Tonda Curry who has been appointed special prosecutor in the case.
“It is always unfortunate when a law enforcement officer violates the law. It undermines the credibility of law enforcement everywhere. The citizens of Precinct 1 are entitled to honest, upstanding law enforcement. If that is not what they have been getting we are going to do our best to stop it,” Curry said.
TAMPERING
On seven occasions, from August 2006 through February 2008, Jackson allegedly made false entries in governmental records with the intent to defraud the DPS Private Security Bureau.
According to the indictments, Jackson made false entries as to when noncommissioned and commissioned security officers were hired. The officers had worked for months or even up to a year in some cases before their recorded hire dates, the documents show.
Investigators in the case said that a local DPS sergeant on routine checks found that deputy constables employed by Jackson’s private security firm were wearing their constable uniforms while working for the security company and not the county. However, they believe Jackson was being paid by the county for the deputies who were already being paid for by the business where they were working security.
“We have found that there were multiple times of this taking place,” one investigator told the newspaper early in the case.
In two separate documents returned to the court, troopers listed 72 items of evidence. Some of those items of evidence included multiple pieces on one entry.
At his constable office, troopers confiscated multiple bags of what was believed to be marijuana taken during drug arrests, a bottle containing some type of unknown liquid, four computers, phone rosters, calendars, time sheets, file folders and e-mail correspondence.
At the security business, officers confiscated three computers, mail, file cabinets, file folders, a weekly payroll sheet and multiple boxes of assorted documents.
OPPRESSION
Jackson was also charged with three misdemeanor counts of official oppression for alleged sexual harassment while acting under the color of his office as a public servant.
On Dec. 15, 2006, March 11, 2007, and July 1, 2007, Jackson made unwelcome sexual advances to three different women — “submission to which was expressly or implicitly made a term or condition of the exercise or enjoyment … of … her employment,” according to the indictments.
Each misdemeanor charge could result in one-year confinement in the county jail and a fine not to exceed $4,000.
One alleged victim told the newspaper in an earlier interview that Jackson touched her inappropriately and when she resisted Jackson allegedly told her that in his office he defined what constituted sexual harassment.
The alleged victim said she feared that Jackson would also fire her and cause a blemish on her record as a peace officer if she reported his actions.
DPS trooper Jean Dark said, “How ironic that a good cop, trooper Steven Stone with the Private Security Bureau, who was shot several years ago, is the one who made the arrest.”
After posting bond Jackson was able to once again assume his duties as a certified peace officer and role as constable.
According to County Judge Joel Baker, Jackson’s arrest does not automatically remove him from office.
In the interim, Baker said that a petition for Jackson’s removal can be filed in district court, but he doesn’t believe that Commissioners’ Court would be the proper petitioner.
Upon conviction or removal, a constable would be replaced by a Commissioners Court appointee.
Officials close to the case said the Internal Revenue Service and the FBI have joined the investigation, however, Curry would only say the investigation continues and numerous agencies are involved.
Jackson did not return calls for a comment but a woman identifying herself as Jackson’s wife answered his cell phone shortly after he posted bond.
“I don’t have anything to say at this time,” she said. When asked if she knew where her husband was she said “I have no idea and I’ll tell him you called if I see him.”

TJ Maxx employee fired for blowing whistle on lax security www.privateofficer.com
Atlanta Ga. May 24 2008
TJX Companies, the mammoth US retailer whose substandard security led to the world’s biggest credit card heist, has fired an employee after he left posts in an online forum that made disturbing claims about security practices at the store where he worked.
Security was so lax at the TJ Maxx outlet located in Lawrence, Kansas, that employees were able to log onto company servers using blank passwords, the fired employee, Nick Benson, told The Register. This policy was in effect as recently as May 8, more than 18 months after company officials learned a massive network breach had leaked the details of more than 94 million customer credit cards. Benson said he was fired on Wednesday after managers said he disclosed confidential company information online.
Other security issues included a store server that was running in administrator mode, making it far more susceptible to attackers. He said he brought the security issues to the attention of a district loss prevention manager name Allen in late 2006, and repeatedly discussed them with store managers. Except for a stretch when IT managers temporarily tightened password policies, the problems went unfixed.
“I was basically hitting a glass wall,” said Benson, a 23-year-old freshman at the
University of Kansas who worked at TJ Maxx beginning in October 2005. “Not one single thing was done. My store manager even posted the password and username on a post-it note. I told her not to do that.”
So last August, Benson took to Sla.ckers.org, a website dedicated to web application security, and began anonymously reporting the shoddy practices in an online forum. Over the next nine months, he left eight posts in which he chafed at the password policy and what he should do about it.
“I am not sure if this is just an isolated incident within this specific store, but it goes to show that you can’t trust a company to protect your information, especially TJX,” Benson wrote under the moniker CrYpTiC_MauleR. “Today was a very sad day for me =o(“
A TJX spokeswoman declined to comment for this story and turned down our request to discuss the company’s policies for passwords and other security matters.
Benson’s May 8 posting was prompted by news that managers had changed the password for employees to access the store server. Inexplicably, it was set to blank. When Benson first began working for TJX, his password was the same as his user name, he said. Then came word in January 2007 that unknown hackers had brazenly intruded on the company’s network over a 17-month period. For a time following the disclosure, TJX employees were required to use relatively strong passwords. The change to a blank password clearly represented a step backward, Benson thought.
The posts eventually caught up to Benson. On Wednesday, while marking down items on the TJ Maxx retail floor, he was summoned to the store office. Inside, a regional loss prevention manager told him his critiques had come to the attention of the company hired to monitor internet postings about the retailing giant. The manager told Benson he was being fired for disclosing confidential company information.
No one at Slackers.org was willing to defend TJX or the shoddy security practices it is accused of following, but some have questioned Benson’s decision to speak so openly.
“I would assume your disclosure of your company’s inner server workings on the internet means that they can’t trust employees to protect their information?” one forum participant wrote in a response to Benson’s posts.
But critiques like that seem to overreach. Benson’s disclosures weren’t specific enough to give attackers information needed to successfully breach TJX’s networks. And when you consider the right of TJX’s customers and employees to know that their data may be at risk, it’s not unreasonable to call him a whistleblower.
For Benson’s part, he has no regrets. “They’re telling the public they’re PCI compliant,” he said, referring to so-called payment card industry security rules governing businesses that accept credit and debit cards. “That I think is unethical.”
But he says his actions were also fueled by a healthy dose of self-interest.
“My information is still on that server,” he continued, referring to the machine that sits in an office at the TJ Maxx where he once worked. “So if their network is insecure, then my information is insecure. I’d prefer they get it fixed.

Hospital worker arrested after giving patient unwanted oral sex www.privateofficer.com
Miami Fla May 24 2008
A Mount Sinai Medical Center employee surrendered Wednesday after police say he performed oral sex on a male patient who was just waking up from anesthesia following surgery.
Pedro J. Gonzalez, 27, of Hialeah, confessed and was charged with sexual battery, Miami Beach police said.
Gonzalez, whose job is to transport patients within the hospital, was immediately fired after the April 30 incident.
The 31-year-old patient had gone to Mount Sinai, 4300 Alton Rd., on April 30 for surgery. Gonzalez wheeled the patient from a recovery room to a standard room and helped him onto the bed.
According to a police report, ”he began to perform oral sex” on the patient, who pushed him away.
The patient later told detectives “even though he was coming off the effects of the anesthesia, he can ID [the suspect] and was aware of the act.”
The police report said Gonzalez came back to the room twice to ”check on” him.
After a nurse ignored his complaint, the patient called Miami Beach police, according to a report.
”Even an isolated incident is unacceptable.
We worked very closely with the Miami Beach police on this matter, and will continue to assist the authorities until a proper resolution is achieved,” spokeswoman Pamela Gadinsky said in a statement.

Armored car company owner arrested for theft www.privateofficer.com
Salt Lake City Ut May 24 2008
By: Rick McCann
Ntl. Assoc. Private Officers
Authorities from several agencies say that they have arrested a president of an armored car company and charged him in 3rd District Court on Friday with stealing tens of thousands of dollars from the Utah Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control.
According to police, the 46-year-old president and principle of Galleon Armored Car & Security Inc. Ron S. Nielson is accused of stealing more than $47,000 in cash and checks from the DABC between Nov. 15, 2007, and Jan. 18, 2008.
Auditors and investigators found that the company had not been depositing all of the funds that they had been picking up from the DABC.
The state contracted with the man in 2006 to provide armored car service, according to documents filed with the arrest warrant. He was entrusted with picking up receipts from DABC outlets and taking them to banks.
Court documents indicate that the UDABC confronted Nielson earlier in 2007 about $65,000 in missing receipts, and the funds were “found” and returned with an explanation from Nielson that “business and personal reverses” had “caused him to lose adequate controls on Galleon.”
Investigators have found that in a two-month period, six deposits totaling $47,489.28 were missing and had not been deposited by the armored car service, the affidavit states.
The man told investigators he himself realized some deposits were going missing as early as June 2007. One of the man’s co-workers also told police he saw the man in the firm’s vault slitting open bags of money and was told to mind his own business.
A search warrant served in March 2008 uncovered a UDABC deposit bag in Galleon’s vault that had been slit open
The company owner now faces a second-degree felony charge of unlawful dealing of property by fiduciary and the investigation is continuing to recover the money.

University security beefed up for Obama’s arrival www.privateofficer.com
HartfordCourant.com
MIDDLETOWN CT. May 24 2008 When Sen. Ted Kennedy’s medical condition cast doubt this week on his plans to give the commencement address at Wesleyan University Sunday, some doubted the campus could field an equally prominent speaker on such short notice.
Then came Barack Obama.
The Illinois senator, presumptive Democratic nominee for president and possibly the hottest speaking ticket in the country right now, will give the commencement address Sunday in Kennedy’s place, officials for the senators and the university said Thursday. In a statement released by his campaign, Obama said Kennedy, who was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor this week, had talked to him earlier in the week about taking his place at Wesleyan.
Considering what he’s done for me and for our country, there’s nothing I wouldn’t do for him,” Obama said. “So I’m looking forward to standing in his place on Sunday even though I know I won’t be able to fill his shoes.”
While the announcement of Obama’s coming was a boon for the university and left many students and faculty giddy, it also sent officials scrambling to figure out how to manage the appearance of a powerful orator who effortlessly draws thousands, if not tens of thousands, to his rallies.Traditionally, Wesleyan’s commencement has been open to the public, with seating determined on a first-come, first-served basis, said Suzanne O’Connell, the faculty marshal.
The ceremony will take place on Andrus Field behind Olin Library, and starts at 10:45 a.m.In the past, commencement has also been simulcast in the campus chapel, the science center and Crowell Concert Hall, and on the Web at http://wescast.wesleyan.edu . David Pesci, a Wesleyan spokesman, said university officials are working out the logistics of the event and will consult the Secret Service, which has been protecting Obama for about a year.
He said a decision on seating and the accessibility of the event is expected by today.”We want to do what we can to ensure our graduates and families are given every opportunity to experience commencement and reunion festivities here the way they have in the past,” Pesci said. “That will be our primary objective.”News of Obama’s engagement spread like wildfire Thursday on the Wesleyan campus, which is mostly populated now with graduating seniors and students who are working on the commencement festivities.
Obama has garnered strong support from college students, and Wesleyan is no exception. Many students at the left-leaning, quirky campus have openly embraced the man who leads former first lady Hillary Clinton in the Democratic race for the nomination.Rashida Richardson, the senior class president, said students were whooping and hollering and dialing family members to spread the word.”I just ran through the streets and screamed at tons of people,” said Richardson, who will be the only student speaker at commencement.Richardson said she was thankful she was speaking before Obama, not following him.
“That would be terrible,” she said with a laugh. The Secret Service began forming a security plan Thursday afternoon for Obama’s visit to Middletown.”We’ll be working in cooperation with state and local police,” said Brian Murphy, resident-agent-in-charge of the Secret Service’s New Haven field office.Obama’s presence means extra security precautions, more media attention, and a screening of guests and participants, but Murphy said the goal is to ensure Obama’s safety “with a minimum of interference to the event.”
Murphy said it was too early to say whether any streets around Wesleyan’s campus would be closed during Obama’s appearance.Middletown Police Chief Lynn Baldoni couldn’t immediately be reached for comment Thursday.
Kennedy, 76, planned to speak at Wesleyan partly because his stepdaughter, Caroline Raclin, will be among the graduates. But when he collapsed from a seizure Saturday and was later diagnosed with the tumor, plans changed.Kennedy returned to the family compound on Cape Cod Wednesday after being released from Massachusetts General Hospital.Kennedy will not attend the graduation ceremonies, but he will keep long-standing plans to host Raclin, the daughter of his wife, Vicki, at a dinner Saturday night.
Also expected at the dinner are her siblings, grandparents, aunts and uncles.Kennedy spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter said Kennedy, who has endorsed Obama for president, made the offer to speak at Wesleyan “knowing it would be an historic opportunity for the school and all those attending. … He’s enormously grateful to Sen. Obama and the support he’s received from all his colleagues this last week.”
Congress is on Memorial Day recess next week. It is unclear when Kennedy will return to Capitol Hill. His doctors are weighing chemotherapy and radiation regimens, but no further announcement is expected from them before midweek. At Wesleyan, word of Obama’s appearance has drawn renewed interest in commencement from faculty members who don’t always attend, O’Connell said. She said she had been fielding phone calls from faculty suddenly interested in being part of the processional.Summed up O’Connell: “It’ll be pretty crazy.”

Woman robbed inside Walmart www.privateofficer.com
WEST PALM BEACH, FL May 24 2008
Debra Cannava needed light fixtures. That’s why she left the sanctuary of her penthouse apartment and hit the Walmart on Northlake Boulevard and Congress Avenue.
Just a few odds and ends, and she’d be back home.
She was in the aisle, looking at lights and pushing her shopping cart, when a man approached her from behind.”He grabbed me by the arm.
He said don’t move. I have a gun. Give me your wallet,” she says. There she was in the middle of the store, at eleven o’clock in the morning, and she was being robbed.
The thief never showed her a gun, and Debra says she wasn’t going to find out if he was lying.”I slowly brought out my wallet and handed it to him and it felt so surreal that this was happening inside Walmart.”
The crook demanded Debra’s cellphone, but before she could hand it over, something spooked him and he ran out through the garden exit.Nobody was around during this whole thing happening and I was thinking where is everybody?”"
Nothing is more important than providing a safe shopping and working environment for both our customers and associates,” says Walmart spokesperson Phillip Keene. “We…have shared security video with the authorities that we believe may be helpful to their investigation.Judith Campbell also hits that Walmart, and like Debra, she usually shops alone. In the parking lot, she’s on her toes. Given the high-profile Town Center Mall murders, she even goes so far as to check under her car before she gets in it.”You would think it would happen more often in the parking lot, than in a store with security guards,” says Campbell.
The crook made off with less than fifty bucks, but for Debra it’s the principal of walking down an aisle of America’s biggest retailer, and coming face to face with a thief.”My mouth must have been hanging open, I was really stunned.
I really thought I could hand this guy my wallet and he could still shoot me,” Debra says.

Store security nabs janitorial service for theft www.privateofficer.com

Police charged Fernando Gonkigo, 23, of Philadelphia with shoplifting Monday in connection with an alleged attempt to steal video games at Target on North 2nd Street.
Police said Gonkigo works for All Jersey Janitorial Service, which cleans the store.
Security officers told police surveillance video showed the suspect taking three Playstation games and then placing them on a display shelf in another department last Friday. Gonkigo returned a short time later, placed the games in his dustpan and then went into a maintenance closet, according to police.
The suspect then took a trash container outside to a larger trash bin.
A security officer located the empty game cases in the bin, but Gonkigo had reportedly already left the store.
When confronted Monday, Gonkigo admitted taking the three games, valued at $52, police said. He was released on a summons.

Mother and son charged with thefts www.privateofficer.com
BAL HARBOUR, FL May 24 2008 A mother and son are accused of shoplifting thousands of dollars in luxury merchandise from a South Florida mall.
Investigators at the Bal Harbour Police Department arrested 38-year-old Robin Small and 20-year-old Darius Gory just a block away from the Bal Harbour Shops.
Police said their shoplifting spree began with a pair of $350 sunglasses.
A store clerk allegedly saw the mother and son stealing them.
At least $10,000 worth of designer merchandise was displayed inside the Bal Harbour Police Department.
Detective Paul Eppler of the BHPD said the two admitted to stealing the merchandise.
However, on camera, Small said she didn’t commit the crime.
“I bought it,” Small said.
