SALISBURY NC June 30 2008

Ntl. Assoc. Private Officers
www.privateofficer.com The police in this town just outside of Charlotte North Carolina said that they are investigating the homicide of an area dentist.
Police say that after the dentist failed to come into work, an employee notified police and officers found the dentist tied to his bed and deceased.
Investigators were able to locate a suspect and arrested a woman now accused of strangling the dentist .
Candice Jo Drye, 23, of Mocksville is in the Rowan County detention center Friday night with no bond for the murder of Dr. David Boyd.
Investigators are still working the case and searched Boyd’s practice while the suspect made a video court appearance to be appointed an attorney.
Salisbury Police Chief Mark Wilhelm wouldn’t elaborate on the cause of death more than to say it was strangulation. He did say that officials expect to learn more from the full autopsy, and that Boyd and Drye knew each other.
Investigators now have learned that there were several others involved and have arrested at least two others.
Investigators say that while Boyd slept before 4:30 a.m. the morning of his death, three people simply walked into the home, gathered Boyd’s high-end electronics, walked upstairs, bound the dentist to the bed with electrical wire and killed him.
One suspect, 23-year-old Candice Drye, turned herself in Thursday evening.
The mother of 18-year-old Jonathan Barnett turner her son in on Saturday – which led to the arrest of Christopher Boyd, 21, a little later.
According to Salisbury Police Chief Mark Wilhelm, Christopher Boyd is the brother of Drye’s boyfriend and the cousin of Barnett.
The suspect is not related to the victim.

The dentist was found tied to his bed by his hands and feet. Wilhelm said more people could be involved. “Our investigation will continue for days, maybe weeks until we get to the bottom of everything and find out all that’s involved,” he said.

Friday afternoon, investigators returned to the home with Boyd’s widow who was said to have been out of town during the murder. Police confirmed that there was numerous electronics and other items missing from the home.
Another source close to the investigation said that Boyd may have also been involved in illegally distributing pain killers or other prescription drugs and that state investigators was looking into it. However police officials would not confirm that.Drye has a probably cause court date for the murder charge on July 9
Funeral arrangements have been set for Boyd. A prayer service will be held at the Summersett Funeral Home at 6:30 p.m. Monday, followed by visitation. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 1 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 11 a.m.

Private prisoner van crashes, 2 dead, 5 injured http://www.privateofficer.com

EL DORADO, Ark. June 30 2008 The Arkansas State Police reported that a driver of a private security firm van ferrying prison inmates through south Arkansas fell asleep behind the wheel yesterday, crashing and that the accident killed two prisoners and injured four others.
The State Police say 43-year-old Gregory O. Reed of Missouri City, Texas was driving a van for U.S. Extradition Service when he dozed off around 6:20 a.m. State police Corporal Jeff Hust told the El Dorado News-Times that prisoners began screaming, “Boss! Boss!” and another guard grabbed the wheel and overcorrected.
Hust says the van struck a culvert and went airborne, ultimately rolling over twice before coming to a stop.
Seven inmates and two guards were in the van, which was on its way to Little Rock.
Hust said both guards were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, while the inmates remained unsecured in the back of the van.
Five of the prisoners and the security agents were injured and transported to area hospitals.
But police said that two of the prisoners, identified as Shawn Talbot of Ladysmith, Wisconsin, and Walter Ridley of Clarendon died at the scene of the crash.
Hust said that their bodies were sent to the state Crime Laboratory in Little Rock for autopsies.
U.S. Extradition Service, based in Austin, Texas, transports prisoners and inmates under contract with law enforcement agencies. Bill Brees, a spokesman for the company, declined to comment

Investigation of Alabama plane crash continues www.privateofficer.com

KENT FAULK and WILLIAM THORNTON

Birmingham Al. June 30 2008

Four people, including three members of a well-known Jasper area car dealership family, died Sunday in a Walker County plane crash.

Bobby Crump, 56, his wife Jan, 52, and their son, Matthew, 21, of Jasper and Matthew’s girlfriend, Lauren Brue, 19, of West Des Moines, Iowa, were killed in the crash, said Walker County Sheriff John Mark Tirey.

The plane crashed into a wooded area off Russell Dairy Road about a mile from the airport.

Phillip Banks, who lives on Johnsey Bridge Road, in the flight path of the airport, said he was in his backyard unhooking his boat when the accident happened. He said he is used to planes coming over but, “this one caught my attention because it didn’t sound right.”

Banks said it sounded like the plane was running on one engine. “It was just spiraling” downward he said. He heard the crash and ran into his house and told his wife to call 911. “I just feel sorry for that family,” he said.

The NTSB and Federal Aviation Administration had already begun to meet with local authorities, investigate the crash and interview witnesses by late Sunday afternoon.

Joey Sanders, owner of Sanders Aviation and a friend of Crump as well as an FAA examiner, said there were no witnesses to the crash. The visibility of three to five miles of at the time of the crash was termed “marginal.”

“It (the plane) was full of fuel,” Sanders said. “Nobody really knows what happened. Whether he had engine trouble, or was trying to turn around and come back, I don’t think anybody knows right now.”

Tirey said they had witnesses who saw the plane going in a downward direction but none who had seen the actual crash. He said there was no rain in the area at the time.

The twin-engine, four-seat Beechcraft BE-55 airplane the four were riding in crashed at 7:56 a.m., shortly after taking off from the Walker County Airport, said National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Keith Holloway.

They were heading to Gulf Shores for a family retreat,” said John Crump, a first cousin to Bobby Crump.

The family, which attended First United Methodist Church in Jasper, was close, John Crump said. “They were always together,” he said.

Bobby and Jan had been married more than 30 years, John Crump said. Jan was a retired teacher and was a homemaker. Matthew, their only child, was a student at the University of Alabama majoring in business. He was about to be a senior. His girlfriend, Lauren Brue, also was a University of Alabama student.

Brue was a member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority and the sorority’s intramural softball team, according to UA Web sites. Bobby Crump was an automobile dealer who had sold his Nissan dealership in Jasper several years ago. He was currently operating a used car lot, C&J Motors, John Crump said.

“He was a great guy, a good businessman and family man,” John Crump said.

Other members of Bobby Crump’s extended family also are or have been in automobile sales in the Birmingham area. They include John Crump, who owned a Toyota dealership at one time. John Crump’s son, Scott, now owns Scott Crump Toyota.

Bobby Crump, who owned the Beechcraft, had a pilot’s license and on Saturday had flown takeoffs and landings as part of the qualifications to keep his pilot’s license current, John Crump said. Sanders said Crump had flown for more than 20 years, but basically kept the plane to fly to the beach for family getaways. The family had even taken two dogs along for Sunday’s trip, he said.

“This is quite a tragedy. They’ll be missed,” said Jasper Mayor Sonny Posey. “They are a highly respected, well-thought of family.

Alabama plane crash leaves Crump family dead www.privateofficer.com

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. June 29 2008  A plane went down and crashed just after take-off from the Walker County airport on Sunday morning, killing Jasper car dealer Bobby Crump, his wife, son and a fourth passenger.

Walker County Sheriff John Mark Tirey confirmed that the plane crashed shortly after take-off from the airport. The family reportedly was bound for Gulf Shores on the Alabama coast when the plane went down about 7:55 a.m. in a wooded area not far from the airport.

The victims are identified as Bobby Crump, Jan Crump, and Matthew Crump, a student at the University of Alabama. The name of a fourth passenger, a woman who was a family friend, was not immediately released.

According to Federal Aviation Administration records, the airplane was a four-seat, twin-engine Beechcraft BE-55, registered to Crump Nissan Inc. in Jasper. FAA records show Bobby Crump has a pilot’s license.

The authorities are not releasing further details of the crash but did say that the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board have sent investigators to the scene.

Crump owned an auto dealership, but sold it several years ago according to public records.

32 Illegal immigrants arrested at aircraft plant www.privateofficer.com

32 Illegal immigrants arrested at airplane manufacturing plant http://www.privateofficer.com

By Seattle Times staff
Seattle WA June 29 2008
A federal search warrant executed Thursday at an aircraft-manufacturing plant in Arlington, part of a national effort to crack down on illegal immigrants, resulted in the arrest of 32 workers.
The search warrant was executed at Aerospace Manufacturing Technologies, a leading supplier of airplane-frame and -interior parts used by Boeing and other companies in commercial and military planes, according to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) news release.
The undocumented workers were from Mexico and El Salvador, ICE officials said.
Four of those arrested were released on humanitarian grounds after being interviewed, but the others were in custody at the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma.
The operation was part of an effort to enforce immigration laws at work sites where security-sensitive information is accessible.
ICE said the Arlington company has ties to a trade organization that oversees the export and import of certain products that could be connected with national defense.

Bank robber arrested 147 times! www.privateofficer.com

Bank robber arrested 147 times! http://www.privateofficer.com

Fort Meyers Fla. June 29 2008

William Singletary has had at least 24 mug shots snapped at Lee County Jail.

Since 1985, jail doors have been revolving for the 44-year-old, accused over the years of at least 147 offenses, according to court records.
So when authorities captured him Friday, accused of committing a bank burglary while out on $38,500 bail for 12 others, it wasn’t exactly shocking.
Sgt. Larry King, spokesman for the sheriff’s office, said deputies are used to seeing the same names inked in the booking sheets.
“But it’s usually more so after the sentencing phase that they will be released, reoffend and come back,” he said.
“You just hope bond is set so they won’t go out and do it again.”
Singletary’s bond for the latest offense was automatically set at $3,000 Friday, but then he appeared in front of a judge and was denied the chance to get out again before trial.
Lee Circuit Judge Thomas Reese, overseeing Singletary’s most recent cases, was not available for comment Friday. The listed number for Singletary’s only current listed attorney, Cortes Rebecca Acosta, was disconnected, as was the last known number for Singletary’s residence. Both bail bonds companies that combined efforts to have him released declined to comment Friday.
Singletary’s most recently attempted heist, according to deputy Martin Cook, targeted the Royal Palm Bank on Winkler Road in Fort Myers. The method mirrored that of previous break-ins: enter at night, grab whatever is within reach and bolt.
At Royal Palm, it was an alarm that attracted the attention of deputies, who found a window smashed and $655 in rolled coins missing.

A witness saw a man fitting Singletary’s description fleeing the area in a truck, and deputies found him a short while later, his vehicle loaded up with 33 pounds of coins hidden in a small, metal trash can, which deputies say also was stolen.
His month of freedom had ended.
He is still awaiting trial on accusations of burglarizing six banks in Bonita, five in Fort Myers and one in Estero. Each was said to have been committed between Feb. 15 and Feb. 27 – six were done in one night. Of those, detectives said, he gained access to only one, taking with him several hundred dollars in rolled coins.
Representatives from the banks either declined to comment or did not return calls.
The state attorney’s office is consolidating several of his charges so all his individual cases won’t bog down the courts.

Dallas police searched for a possible robbery suspect in the Oak Cliff area late Friday.
During the incident, police say that three officers were injured in a related squad car wreck and scuffle.
According to police reports, a security officer at the Sam’s Club off Interstate 20 at Wheatland Road witnessed an attempted robbery.
He was involved in a scuffle with the suspect and fired shots. That officer, who may have been an off-duty Dallas police officer, hurt his shoulder and the suspect fled on foot to a nearby apartment complex at Old Hickory Trail and Wheatland Road.
Just after 9:30 p.m., a police officer who was responding to the robbery incident was involved in a wreck at the intersection of South Westmoreland Avenue and Camp Wisdom Road. Two officers were hurt in the wreck, according to reports.
Police and paramedics were dispatched to all three crime scenes.
As the incident unfolded, more officers and the Dallas SWAT and police helicopters were called in to help in the search for the suspect. They questioned residents and found articles of clothing scattered around the apartment complex, but did not find the suspect.
Two of the injured officers were transported to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

The King County sheriff’s office says a 22-year-old Renton man who was killed in a hit-and-run on a Boulevard Park street had been involved in a disturbance at a casino according to their investigation.
Deputies working the case, checked with security guards at Rascal’s Casino and together the officers worked to identify the other person in the Wednesday night disturbance.
Deputies say that both men had been fighting earlier inside the casino and had been asked to leave by security personnel.
Armed with the information from the casino security staff, deputies went to that person’s home in Tukwila, found a van with body damage and arrested the 29-year-old driver for investigation of vehicular homicide.
Investigators are still putting pieces together and aren’t sure of what started the disturbance or why the victim was walking in the roadway, Des Moines Memorial Drive.
The suspect, 29, made his first appearance at the Norm Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent, where he remained in custody. He could face charges of vehicular homicide. Prosecutors have until Monday to make a charging decision, spokesman Dan Donohoe said.
Bail was set at $250,000 Friday for a Tukwila man suspected of running over and killing a pedestrian and leaving the scene of the accident.

At this time, the name of the suspect has not been released.

Mall security, police nab jewelry thieves http://www.privateofficer.com

Chandler AZ June 29 2008
By:Rick McCann

http://www.privateofficer.com/

Police say that two jewel thieves got away with it once so they tried their hand at it again but with not the same results the second time around. After James Johnson and Joshua Forsgren made off with one stolen diamond ring on Monday from a jewelry store inside a Mesa mall, police said they tried for another. But their second heist attempt was thwarted.
Johnson, 25, and Forsgren, 19, both of Gilbert, were arrested after three diamond rings were stolen from two jewelry stores in the Superstition Springs and Chandler Fashion Center malls within two hours, police records show.
According to police, Forsgren went to counters at the jewelry stores and asked to look at diamond rings. After the employees handed them over, he’d make a beeline for the doors and run..
The two first targeted Kaye Jewelers at Superstition Springs Center just before 7 p.m., police said. Forsgren moved in quickly, got the ring and sprinted out an exit at the mall’s east side.
Employees at Kaye’s quickly contacted police and phoned other area jewelry stores to tell them what happened.
So when Johnson and Forsgren strolled up to Whitehall Jewelers in Chandler about 90 minutes later, workers and police were already on alert.
Forsgren walked inside as he had done previously and asked to look at two rings, police said. He grabbed them and ran.
Except this time, a security officer saw him and began chasing him. There was also a Chandler officer already in the mall.
Forsgren first entered a bookstore and dashed around before running into a salon where he locked himself in a bathroom, police said.
After several minutes, the officer persuaded Forsgren to come out. Johnson was also picked up nearby, police said.
The officer found two rings on Forsgren and one on Johnson. Together, the three rings were valued at more than $50,000, records show.
The two were arrested on suspicion of multiple thefts and could face other charges.
According to police, Forsgren doesn’t have a criminal record in Arizona. But court records show that Johnson has several prior arrests for trespassing, weapons violations, assault and theft. He is also on probation.
Police also said that Forsgren has a slight mental disability, and Johnson was using him to commit the thefts, police said.
Both are being held at the county detention center waiting court dates.

Suspect in church murder shoots himself in head http://www.privateofficer.com

CLEARFIELD PA June 29 2008
Kyle T. Greene
Ntl. Assoc. Private Officers
http://www.privateofficer.com/ – The 72-year-old maintenance man shot in the basement of a Clearfield church early Thursday has died.
James Dixon was pronounced dead at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Altoona Regional Health System, Altoona Hospital Campus, Blair County Coroner Patty Ross said. An autopsy is scheduled for this morning at Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College.
The alleged gunman, Norman Kauffman, 53, is brain-dead but still on life support so doctors can harvest his organs, Ross said. Kauffman shot himself in the head Thursday afternoon after a daylong manhunt in the Moshannon State Forest, 15 miles north of Clearfield.
Kauffman called 911 to report his crime.
”I shot Jim, and I think he’s dead,” Kauffman told officers after they called him back at the number logged by Clearfield County’s emergency dispatch system, court records reveal.
Kauffman then told police where to find Dixon in the basement of Trinity United Methodist Church on South Second Street, where Dixon worked.
It was there, shortly before 6:45 a.m., that Kauffman confronted, then shot Dixon for having an affair with his wife.
Police discovered an unresponsive Dixon lying in a pool of blood with a gunshot wound below his right eye, and two .25-caliber shell casings were found at the scene.
As police tried to locate Kauffman, officers learned from his family that he had threatened to shoot Dixon and was ”distraught and contemplating suicide,” Clearfield police Officer Timothy O’Leary noted in court papers.
Criminal homicide, aggravated assault and reckless endangerment charges were filed against Kauffman Thursday in Clearfield. District Attorney Bill Shaw said the charges would be withdrawn pending notification of Kauffman’s death.
On Thursday, Clearfield Borough Police Chief Jeff Rhone said from all accounts, Kauffman was considered by those who knew him as a nice man.
Rhone said when he talked to Kauffman on the phone during the manhunt, he seemed calm and respectful but apparently couldn’t handle his situation any longer.
Kauffman eventually revealed his location near a camp in Pine Township.
”It was urgent that we got to him,” Rhone said, indicating police were aware he might harm himself

A man who told authorities that he was assaulted with a knife while working as a security guard last weekend is now accused of filing a false report to a police station.Devon Alexander Gwyn, 19, of 244 Woodbridge Drive, an employee of TNT Carports, was charged with that violation Thursday after police investigated the alleged assault against him.

Gwyn had told officers that he was cut with the knife while working at the TNT Carports location on Holly Springs Church Road.
Previous reports indicated that a man had approached a guard station where Gwyn was working and began beating repeatedly on the door.
The security guard came outside and told the man that he needed to leave, and in the process of trying to re-enter the building, was cut on the arm by the man, according to the account given to police. Gwyn is said to have suffered “several marks on his arm,” as relayed by one Mount Airy officer, but declined to be transported to the hospital by the Surry County EMS.

Gwyn’s report, which indicated that the suspect had fled into the woods after the assault, led to a search of the area by city and county law enforcement personnel.

Neither Detective J.A. Freeman, who charged Gwyn with filing the false report, nor Officer C.C. Kennedy, who investigated the initial assault with a deadly weapon case, could be reached for comment Friday concerning how Gwyn was implicated.
He is scheduled to appear in Surry District Court on July 17 on the misdemeanor charge.

An altercation outside a Kansas City convenience store erupted in gunfire early Saturday after two employees were struck by a car.
Police responding to 911 calls said two women in the parking lot of the 7-Eleven store at Independence Avenue and Benton Boulevard were arguing with some men in a car about 1:30 a.m. When a store employee and a security officer went out to see what was going on, the men sped off, but police said that they returned shortly and struck the employee and security guard with the car, police said.
The security officer and at least one other person who may have been a customer at the store, shot at the car as the car sped off.
Authorities said that one of the people that may have been in the car later showed up at a local hospital with gunshot wounds and is in critical condition, police said, but they had not been able to confirm whether he was involved in the incident.
The security officer and other store employee were not seriously injured.
Police are continuing their investigation and said that no suspects were in custody Saturday afternoon and did not know if charges would be filed against the security officer or other person who had fired shots. Right now it looks like self defense an officer said.

The victims were loading groceries into their vehicle outside the store on Cortez Boulevard when Derek Griffith approached them and began trying to help them out.
They told him to stop, so Griffith then climbed into the passenger seat and began reaching for CDs and the ignition, a police report states.
At this point, Wal-Mart security became aware of what was going on and they took Griffith, 25, of 3341 Dow Lane, into custody and notified police.
Griffith was arrested on a felony charge of burglary of a conveyance.

Ntl. Assoc. Private Officers
http://www.privateofficer.com/ Authorities in this metro Atlanta county have been notified this week that a grand jury handed up an indictment against a deputy sheriff who had been involved in a collision last year that resulted in the death of the wife of a fellow deputy.
Chris Black is charged with both felony and misdemeanor vehicular homicide in the death of Tammy Barnwell.
Authorities said that Black was responding to a robbery call in November when he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into Tammy Barnwell’s car head on, killing her instantly.
After a lengthy investigation it was determined that Black did not have his emergency lights or his siren on and may have been driving at a high rate of speed

Black’s attorney, Mike Puglise, said his client extended his remorse. He said if Black could take it back he would.
Deputy Black was a co-worker of Barnwell’s husband who is also a law enforcement officer. Tammy Barnwell was a well liked manager at an area Wal-Mart.
One investigator said at the time of the crash that it was a terrible tragedy for both families and the community where many folks knew both deputies and their family.
It’s just sad and a terrible situation for everyone involved he said.
Black is expected to turn himself in within a few days.
The sheriff said Black will also be fired.

Chattanooga police officers honored for shoplifting arrests www.privateofficer.com

Chattanooga police officers honored for shoplifting arrests www.privateofficer.com

Chattanooga TN June 29 2008

Three Chattanooga police officers got top kudos from Chief Freeman Cooper today for working hard to capture two people accused of being prolific shoplifters.
Chief Cooper presented Sgt. Pat O’Brien, Officer Rick Engle and Officer Robert Bell with the Challenge Coin award after working to capture a man a woman who have been charged with working together to steal several thousand dollars worth of food, electronics and other items from a handful of Chattanooga stores, said Lt. Kim Noorbergen, police spokeswoman.

Police allege Rick Talley, with the help of Sheila Horne, filled a Target shopping cart with items and exited through a back door in April. Using the same techniques, the couple hit the store twice, and police allege Mr. Talley also stole electronics from a Wal-Mart, Lt. Noorbergen said.
When Officers Engle and Bell secured warrants for Mr. Talley and Ms. Horne, Sgt. O’Brien recognized the couple as suspects in thefts from a Bi-Lo grocery store. Police allege they took $9,000 in meat during two thefts from that business, Lt. Noorbergen said.
Mr. Talley pleaded guilty to the Target theft charges and received two years jail time. The Bi-Lo thefts are still in the court system. Ms. Horne’s case was bound over to the grand jury for indictment. Both suspects are still in jail, records show.
The officers’ cooperative work earned them praise from police commanders, who said the cases wouldn’t have been solved without their efforts, said Lt. Noorbergen.

Teenager decapitated at Six Flags Atlanta Ga. www.privateofficer.com

Atlanta GA June 28 2008

BREAKING NEWS ALERT

Cobb County police are investigating a death at Six Flags over Georgia in which a teen-age boy reportedly was decapitated, according to WXIA television in Atlanta.

Authorities told the NBC affiliate’s Web site, 11Alive.com that around 2:30 p.m. that the boy  was decapitated when he was struck by the Batman ride, a coaster at the amusement park that can travel as fast as 50 miles per hour. The park is just west of Atlanta.

According to a Six Flags representative, a group of young people jumped over a perimeter fence near the Batman ride as it was coming. The teen was then struck and killed

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported on its Web site, ajc.com, that the teen’s family was at the park with him when the accident occurred.

“We do not know why this person was intent on gaining access to this restricted area, as multiple signs clearly state: Danger Zone/Do Not Enter/Authorized Personnel Only,” park spokeswoman Hela Sheth said in a statement reported by the Web site.“Some witnesses have stated that the individual was trying to retrieve something he had lost,” Sheth said. “Others reported that he was trying to touch the ride. This is merely speculation at this point, and we are working with park visitors and local police to learn more.”

No one on the ride was injured, Sheth said in the statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family,” the Six Flags statement said. Cobb County police declined to confirm reports that the teen was decapitated, according to the newspaper Web site.

According to Six Flags’ Web site, the coaster was first introduced in 1997 and is close to 11 stories tall. It includes two vertical loops, two corkscrews and a heartline spin that produces a “feeling of weightlessness.”

Correction officer charged with kidnapping, rape of inmate http://www.privateofficer.com

Warrensville Heights Oh June 28 2008
A 27-year-old suspended jail guard for the Warrensville Heights Police Department was indicted Thursday on charges of rape, kidnapping, tampering with evidence, sexual battery and intimidation.
George Sims, of Maple Heights, is accused of forcing a female inmate to have sex with him in her jail cell.
Sims entered an inmate’s cell on April 28 and said that he wanted to fix a light fixture, Ryan Miday, spokesperson for the Cuyahoga Prosecutor’s Office said.
When the woman turned around Sims forced himself on her, Miday said. Sims told the inmate not to tell anyone.
Authorities were alerted to the incident when the inmate called her husband and told him she had been raped. Warrensville Heights Police Chief Frank Bova said that in the six years Sims has been with the department he had only minor infractions on his record, prior to this incident. Sims will have a hearing with the city’s safety director to determine his status with the department.
Sims’ arraignment has not been scheduled.
If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 35 years in prison.

Shoplifter dies in police custody www.privateofficer.com

Shoplifter dies in police custody http://www.privateofficer.com

from the I-Network News

Coralville Ia. June 28 2008

A man died after being taken into Coralville police custody for shoplifting.

At approximately 8:28 p.m. Sunday, Coralville police officers responded to a call from Hy-Vee, 1914 Eighth St., Coralville, regarding a shoplifting incident.
According to a statement from the police, Todd Edwards, 37, of Orlando, Fla., ran from the store prior to officers’ arrival. Edwards was reportedly arrested and taken to the Coralville police station shortly following police arrival at the scene. According to police, the Edwards became less responsive soon after taken into custody.
He then reportedly requested the assistance of an ambulance as his condition worsened. Edwards was then transported by the Johnson County Ambulance Service to the bu UI Hospitals and Clinics, where he was pronounced dead. UIHC had no information on the incident. Johnson County Medical Examiner Stephen Scheckel said an autopsy was conducted Monday but that results are unavailable because of a pending toxicology test. “We’re not sure when results will be in,” he said. “
But [it will be] at least a number of weeks before we get those back.” Scheckel said the examiner’s office is not conducting any tests out of the ordinary for this case.
Coralville Police Chief Barry Bedford called for the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation to look into the circumstances surrounding Edwards’ death. In the Coralville department’s 2006 annual report, statistics showed theft as the second-most common crime in the city, with reports increasing more than 50 percent from a year prior.
“There’s not much you can do proactively to combat theft,” Coralville police Lt. Shane Kron told the DI in March 2007 interview. “We try to work with the retailers to tell them what to look for.” Hy-Vee declined comment on the security measures taken in its stores.
Neither the Coralville Police Department nor Hy-Vee provided further comment on the incident.

Children injured when security guard shoots into car www.privateofficer.com

Children injured when security guard shoots into car http://www.privateofficer.com

HOUSTON TX June 28 2008
By: Rick McCann
Ntl. Assoc. Private Officers
http://www.privateofficer.com/ A security guard shot out the back windshield of a car Thursday night, sending broken glass all over the interior of the car and injuring some children in the backseat.
It happened police said at around 11:55 p.m. at the Silvercreek Apartments in the 3200 block of Mangum.
Houston police said the security guard got into an argument with a man at the back of the complex. The guard had told the man to leave the property, who intially refused.
The car, which HPD said has darkly tinted windows, then headed to the front and refused to stop at the gate, and at that point, for reasons the police have not determined yet, the security officer shot at the car, shattering the back windshield.
HPD Officer Brian Evans said some glass hurt people inside the vehicle.
According to HPD, children, possibly three were taken to an area hospital for treatment but they do not know the extent of the injuries.
Right now, police are investigating the circumstance of the gunfire and are not sure if charges will be brought. Police are not releasing any names at this time.

Security officer called hero for performing CPR on lifeless infant www.privateofficer.com

Security officer called hero for performing CPR on lifeless infant http://www.privateofficer.com

OCEAN CITY MD June 28 2008 A local security officer became a hero last Thursday evening, when he played a major role in saving the life of a seven-week-old infant that was rushed into his office.
Barry Pryor, security officer at the Sea Watch Condominiums on 115th Street, was in the midst of a typical night at work last Thursday evening when a pair of renters rushed into the office, holding their infant.
“They ran the baby down to the office, they were in hysterics,” recalled Pryor.
Rightly so, the parents were visibly upset by the state of their baby, who was gray and not breathing. The cause of the infant’s condition was unknown to the parents, who had rushed down from the sixth floor in search of help.
“The other security guard on duty, Chris Fulton, called 911 while I preformed infant CPR and got him back breathing,” said Pryor. “He was just a little guy.”
Moments later an ambulance arrived, taking over the now stable baby and rushing him to Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury and later to Johns Hopkins.
“I don’t really know anymore from there,” said Pryor, who did not know the name of the baby or of the parents.
CRP certification is not a requirement of the job, particularly not infant CPR, a delicate procedure to perform. Pryor brought his emergency and CPR training with him from his years as a volunteer firefighter.
“I was a former firemen in Millville, Delaware,” explained Pryor.
Pryor currently lives in Millville and has been working with the Sea Watch for the past three years. Pryor has two sons of his own, ages 21 and 23, one of whom deals with emergency situations like last Thursday night regularly, as an EMT.
Likely considered a hero in the eyes of the parents whose baby he saved that night, Pryor is just glad he was there to assist them, speaking modestly of his role in the events.
“I’m glad the little fella’ is doing fine and I’m certainly glad everything worked out the way it did and that we were able to help,” he said.

Security officer disappears from post 8 years ago www.privateofficer.com

Security officer disppears from post 8 years ago http://www.privateofficer.com

SEABROOK, N.H. JUNE 28 2008 The family of a Seabrook, New Hampshire, security guard who disappeared eight years ago is offering a $5,000 reward for information locating his remains.

Curtis Pishon’s family believes he was murdered and his remains are somewhere within an hour’s drive of the seacoast town.

Pishon disappeared from his post at the former Venture Corp. in Seabrook early on July 5, 2000.

Last year, his parents had him declared legally dead. This year, they are launching a campaign called Bring Curt Home with a web site http://www.findcurt.com. They are hoping someone will step forward so they can give him a proper burial.

Each year on the anniversary of his disappearance, the family has reached out to Seabrook residents for help.

“As far as having a big push now — there is never a timeline for finding a son,” said his mother Astrid Pishon. “In my heart, I know someone will come forward because it is the right thing to do, and such actions are what truly distinguishes us from the uncivilized.”

The Pishon family has ties to Seabrook dating back three generations and believes someone in town knows what happened.

Though the family believes he was murdered, Seabrook police consider the disappearance a missing persons case. There were hints of foul play, but no evidence. He was last seen about 2 a.m. after reporting his car had been torched.

Pishon, an Army veteran, left the Concord Police Department after 10 years following a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis in 1994. He worked as a security guard for Reliable Security Guard Agency and was on duty on the third shift at Venture Corp., a now-defunct company which manufactured plastic parts for automobiles, when he disappeared.

“We have placed signs in the Seacoast area and have bought advertisements in the local papers to help spread the word,” said Nicholas Pishon Jr., Curt’s brother, who organized the campaign.

“We again mark this sad time with hopes and prayers that someone will help us discover what happened to Curt and help us bring him home,” said his mother, Astrid Pishon.

http://www.privateofficer.com/ A Talladega Wal-Mart employee and her two friends have been charged with theft after police say security agents caught the trio on security cameras and video tape showed the woman handing cash to them over the past month.

Police were notified by loss prevention agents of the scheme and officers have charged 19-year-old Taylor Caldwell, 22-year-old Aja Bey, and 20-year-old Sandricka President with charges of theft.

Investigators say security video showed Caldwell taking cash from a register and giving it to her friends on several occassions.
Security personnel estimated that they stole more than $3600.

All three are being held on $5,000 bond.

They are awaiting a hearing in Talladega County District Court.

http://www.privateofficer.com/ A Snow Hill man who this week entered an Ocean City hotel room claiming to be a security guard was arrested a short time later and charged with burglary and possession of crack cocaine.
Early Tuesday morning, OCPD officers responded to the Seabonnay Motel on 27th Street for a reported burglary of a motel room. Upon arrival, police interviewed a witness who told them a man claiming to be a hotel security guard awakened her while she was sleeping and claimed to be a security guard.
When the victim questioned the suspect, later identified as Robert Louis Coston III, 27, of Snow Hill, he left the room and fled from the motel. The victim contacted the motel management who assured her Coston did not work for the motel. A description of Coston, who was wearing a white tank-top and jeans at the time of the incident, was broadcast and he was picked up a short time later sitting in a car near 12th Street and Wilmington Lane.
Coston was positively identified as the man who entered the room at the Seabonnay and he was taken into custody. At the time of his initial contact with police, Coston gave a fake name, but his driver’s license was recovered during a search, as was an amount of crack cocaine in sufficient quantity to indicate intent to distribute.
Coston was charged with first-, third- and fourth-degree burglary as well as associated felony and misdemeanor drug charges and theft. He was seen by a court commissioner and ordered held on a $100,000 bond.

An investigation by the University of Georgia police has led to another employee of the Montgomery County Cooperative Extension Service being charged with stealing money from the office.
Amanda Chambers, who is a 4-H and youth worker in the South Georgia county, is charged with five felony counts of theft for writing five checks totaling $5,422.94 on a 4-H livestock account, said Lt. Lisa Boone of the UGA Police Department.
A UGA police investigator was notified of the incidents and after conducting an internal investigation swore out five felony warrants for the thefts, which police say occurred between January and March.
Chambers is the second extension worker this year charged with theft. In March, UGA police charged Doris Faye Beck of Cleveland, a secretary in the Hall County Cooperative Extension office, with taking more than $50,000 over a two-year period.

CONCORD CA June 28 2008

Ntl. Assoc. Private Officer
http://www.privateofficer.com/ A Washington Mutual bank teller and a security officer were taken to a hospital after they were assaulted during a takeover style robbery Friday afternoon.
The robbery was reported at 4:06 p.m. at the bank at 4390 Clayton Road, Concord police Sgt. Matt Morrissey said.
Police said two men, at least one of them armed with a handgun, walked into the bank and attacked the security guard.
“He was sitting by the front door and they wacked him, pistol-whipped him, right across the head,” Morrissey said.
They ordered everyone down to the ground and then jumped over the counter and struck a female teller in the head.
“We’re assuming they did this intentionally,” he said.
The robbers grabbed cash and then ran outside the bank and down Bel Air Drive, where they split up. Witnesses along the street told police they saw one of the suspects running down the street with a smoking backpack, “consistent with dye pack,” he said.
Other witnesses said that they got into two separate cars, a black Nissan and a gold Toyota Camry.
According to the police report, both robbers were in their late teens or early 20s. The first robber was about 5 feet 10 inches, black, thin, wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and jeans. The second was about 5 feet 11 inches, black, thin, with a goatee and short-cropped hair. He also wore a dark hooded sweatshirt and dark jeans.
The teller was taken to John Muir Hospital in Walnut Creek. The security officer was taken to John Muir Hospital in Concord. Their names and conditions were not made available.

WHITE PLAINS NY June 27 2008
By: Rick McCann
Ntl. Assoc. Private Officers
When you’re an employer, you’re always looking to hire good, honest employees. Someone that can be trusted to do a good days work and to not steal from you.
When a new hire by the name of Trust came to work at a local store they thought surely, he must be honest.
But, Donald Trust apparently didn’t live up to his name.
Police said that the 51-year-old Brooklyn man was arrested last night, after his boss at a White Plains eyeglass store decided to play detective and conducted his own sting operation to determine if Mr. Trust was in fact, not trustworthy and he proved to police that Trust stole money from the cash register.
The owner of Metro Vision, 245 Main St., told police he suspected that one of his employees was stealing. He said a female employee told him she thought she saw Trust take money from the register, but couldn’t prove it.
Not wanting to tip his hand to his employee, and with no evidence to give to the police for an arrest, the owner decided to try something that would help prove or disprove that trust had been broken. So, the owner put a sting in place and photocopied three $20 bills and put the real bills in the register about noon yesterday.
By 3:30 p.m., he said, the bills were gone. At that point, he summoned police and they went to the store and asked both employees to come to Public Safety headquarters “to get to the bottom of whatever was going on,” according to a police report.
Once there, cops asked Trust if he had any cash and he produced three $20 bills and $1 bills. Police said the $20s matched the owner’s photocopies.
At that point, police said, Trust admitted he took the bills from the register.
He has been charged with petty larceny, a misdemeanor.
Bail and court information was not available.
It just goes to show you, sometimes you just can’t judge a person by their name.
