A security guard who entered the U.S. District Court in Wilmington Monday with two knives and a loaded gun was taken back to court in custody Tuesday on charges of knowingly possessing a firearm inside a federal court building.
Lloyd L. Stafford, 42, of the Dover area, who was to attend a 3 p.m. bankruptcy hearing Monday, declared he had two knives to courthouse security officers.
Scanning equipment then showed a .22-caliber handgun, which was loaded, in a briefcase, court papers said.
Stafford, who was uniform, was immediately arrested.
In court Tuesday, Stafford’s attorney said his client simply forgot he had the gun with him. Magistrate Judge Mary Pat Thynge granted a prosecution request for more time to check on Stafford’s background. A detention hearing is set today.
If convicted, Stafford faces up to 2 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
