Authorities rushed to the local Sam’s Club after getting a 911 call that a child had been shot.
Police say that a 4-year-old girl shot herself at a Sam’s Club store in Columbia after grabbing her grandmother’s gun.
Columbia Police Department spokesman Brick Lewis said the child grabbed the gun from her grandmother’s purse Monday and shot herself in the chest.
Police and emergency medical personnel responded nad say that they found a yound child suffering from a gunshot which police later determined was self inflicted.
Lewis said the grandmother, Donna Hutto Williamson of Salley, has a valid permit to carry a concealed weapon. She has not been charged with a crime but the investigation is continuing.
Lewis said the child was rushed to a local hospital and was recovering after undergoing emergency surgery. Hospital officials wouldn’t release her condition.
The store was closed while police investigated the shooting. It reopened Monday afternoon.
Police are not saying if the grandmother will be charged with any crimes.
