Private Officers A North Precinct officer who was walking to the parking lot of the Police Department’s downtown headquarters early Sunday morning was in the right place at the right time and was able to arrest a 25-year-old Birmingham man on drug and gun charges. The police report said that the officer saw the man sitting in the driver’s seat of a car parked outside 1710 First Avenue North, the department’s administration building, shortly after midnight with a “leafy green substance” resembling marijuana and rolling papers. When the officer asked the man what he was doing, he jumped up in his seat and said, “Huh?” The officer repeated the question and the man replied, “Rolling a joint.” The officer took the man out of his car and placed the suspect in the backseat of a patrol car while the officer searched the man’s vehicle. During the search, the officer found a 9mm handgun. The man was arrested on a misdeamenor marijuana possesion charge. His name was not released at this time.
