Closing time turned ugly in downtown San Jose early Sunday morning as dozens of police officers responded to fights and a stabbing of a security officer at one of the downtown clubs, police said.
Police dealt with what they are describing as an out-of-control, violent crowd that engaged in multiple fights throughout the entertainment area.
More than 30 police officers descended upon the downtown area and used Tasers, pepper spray and batons to quell the raucous crowd about when the downtown clubs and bars closed at 1:30 a.m., according to Officer Jermaine Thomas, a police spokesman.
A security officer, whose name was not released, working at Motif Restaurant and Club, located at 389 S. First St., was stabbed while trying to break up a fight, according to police. The security bouncer was rushed to an area hospital but is not believed to be seriously wounded, Thomas said.
“All these people were coming out, and fights just started popping up here and there,” Thomas said. “On any given night, we usually have a couple of fights. This was out of the ordinary.”
The violence was centered in downtown’s SoFA, or South of First Street Area, and lasted about 30 minutes and police arrested 16 people for offenses including drunk in public and fighting in public, Thomas said.
