Preacher puts dead wife in freezer and goes to church www.privateofficer.com

Preacher puts dead wife in freezer and goes to church http://www.privateofficer.com

MOBILE, Ala. July 31 2008 Police believe a body found in a small-time evangelist’s home freezer is his wife and a mother of eight, and arrested him on a murder charge as he preached at a south Alabama church.
Anthony Hopkins, 37, was being held in the Mobile County jail Wednesday awaiting a bond hearing and appointment of an attorney.
Police said no one reported 36-year-old Arletha Hopkins missing, even though she hadn’t been heard from in three years. The body was discovered covered in a freezer in a utility room during a police search of the home in Mobile after a relative of the preacher contacted police.
Mobile Police Chief Phillip Garrett said Hopkins was arrested Monday night at a revival in Jackson, a town in rural Clarke County where he has roots. The pastor of Inspirational Tabernacle Church of God in Christ, Beverly Jackson, told reporters that Hopkins told her he was a single parent because his wife had died in childbirth.
Police awaited results of forensic tests to determine the cause of death, but Garrett said authorities believe it is Hopkins’ wife. The freezer was moved to a forensics lab.
Garrett said Anthony Hopkins, the father of six of the eight children, has been charged with rape and sodomy in a separate case involving the female relative and could face more charges related to another relative.
Mobile County District Attorney John Tyson Jr. said the children who lived with Hopkins – who ranged in age from 3 to 19 – have been taken into protective custody by the Department of Human Resources.
Garrett said the Hopkins children were home-schooled. He said Hopkins “kept to himself,” and apparently moved from place to place. Neighbors called him “Rev.” because he attended church so often, loading the children into a van.
Police said he preached at various churches and did not appear to be affiliated with a particular denomination.
At the church in Jackson, Hopkins was delivering a message about forgiveness that drew encouraging “amens” from the congregation.
Clarke County Sheriff’s Chief Investigator Sgt. Ron Baggett said he listened through the church door before assisting in the arrest about 10 p.m. Monday. About 25 people were in the congregation at the time.

Late night shoplifting trip turns into robbery www.privateofficer.com

Late night shoplifting trip turns into robbery http://www.privateofficer.com

SANTA ROSA CO., Fla. July 31 2008 — Two suspects were arrested late Tuesday night after their attempt to steal wine from a local grocery store was foiled.
Shortly before midnight, deputies were dispatched to the Winn Dixie on Highway 90 in Pace in reference to an armed robbery.
A store employee told deputies that two white males had entered the store with a backpack and concealed two bottles of wine inside the backpack.
The employee confronted the individuals and grabbed the backpack containing the wine. The suspects began to flee, at which time the store employee grabbed the individual that had been carrying the backpack.
The suspect (later identified as Donald Stelly) pulled out a knife and threatened to stab the employee. The employee let go of Stelly, and Stelly advanced towards the employee demanding the backpack.
After a few seconds, Stelly fled from the store, leaving the backpack and wine behind. Both suspects fled from the store and got inside a Chevy El Camino. They then fled from the scene at a high rate of speed.
Deputies were able to intercept the vehicle a short distance from the location of the crime. The suspects were immediately identified by store employees as the suspects that committed the crime.
The other suspect that was present during the crime with Stelly, and also drove the El Camino away from the scene, was identified as 17-year-old Tanner Fincher.
Based on all statements and evidence that was present, both Stelly and Fincher were arrested for Robbery with a Weapon, Petit Theft, and Possession of Alcohol under 21.
Due to Fincher being a juvenile, he was processed at the Santa Rosa County Jail then transported to the Department of Juvenile Justice in Pensacola.
Stelly was booked into the Santa Rosa County Jail and is being held on a $51,000.

http://www.privateofficer.com/ An armored car security agent was shot in the leg and the driver was also wounded by a gunshot during an attempted robbery outside of a Wachovia bank, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responding to the robbery say armed subjects confronted a Loomis armored car driver, shortly after 10 a.m., after the vehicle pulled up at the Wachovia Bank at 4900 Okeechobee Boulevard in Suburban West Palm Beach.
The Loomis employee was re-stocking an ATM outside the bank when a group of men armed with an assault rifle and several handguns jumped out of a blue van.
The group of men and the armed guards exchanged gunfire. A witness inside the bank claims to have heard at least 12 shots.
During the attempted robbery, the armored car passenger was shot in the leg. The driver, who was also wounded by a gunshot, drove the armored car to Good Samaritan Medical Center in West Palm Beach. The driver’s injuries were minor. The passenger is expected to survive.Police captured the one suspect left behind on a nearby street. The armed gunman fled and left a black ski mask and blue clothing near a canal bank.Deputies say the men were wearing blue and left in a blue van.
The clothing and the vehicle have been found. The Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office has set up a perimeter from Military Trail to Haverhill Road, and from Belvedere Road to Okeechobee Boulevard.

The sheriff’s department has now captured three of the five men wanted as of Thursday morning.
Sheriff investigators are calling the driver of the armored car a hero and said that he took heroic steps to save both his life and his partners.

Shoplifters steal to support drug habit www.privateofficer.com

Shoplifters steal to support drug habit http://www.privateofficer.com

South Kitsap WA. July 31 2008

Three people were arrested Wednesday night after allegedly stealing from Port Orchard stores to support a drug habit.

A man and a woman were spotted leaving through the side door of the Rite Aid Pharmacy at about 8:30 p.m., carrying a blue tote bag. They left the parking lot in a white Ford Explorer.

A short time later, a sheriff’s deputy saw the car at Wal-Mart on Bethel Road. The driver jumped out near the tire center, returned and took off quickly, according to the police report. The deputy followed the car to Lowe’s on Sedgwick, where the man tried to leave the closed garden section with some items but couldn’t get out. He left the store empty-handed.

The car was pulled over just after 9 p.m. and a blue tote and other items were found in the back.

A 33-year-old Tacoma woman said stayed in the passenger seat while her boyfriend, a 35-year-old Tacoma man, went into the Rite Aid store. She claimed that she didn’t know what he was doing, but later admitted that they relied on shoplifting to support her drug habit.

Another passenger, a 40-year-old Lakewood man, had a warrant from the Department of Corrections for escape. He claimed not to know about the shoplifting.

The woman was booked into the Kitsap County jail on suspicion of first-degree theft. She was released on personal recognizance. Both men were booked on suspicion of first-degree theft and second-degree possession of stolen property with bail set at $60,000 each

Man uses slingshot to assault security, police officers http://www.privateofficer.com

COSTA MESA CA. July 31 2008
By: Rick McCann
Ntl. Assoc. Private Officers
www.privateofficer.com – Police say that a 40-year-old man armed with a slingshot opened fire on Costa Mesa police Tuesday afternoon, hurling metal ball bearings at officers and shattering the windshield of a police cruiser after damaging several cars in a corporate headquarters parking lot Tuesday afternoon, police said. The man also took aim at a company security officer near by but missed, police said.
Officers called to the scene tried talking the man into surrendering but when that didn’t work, officers fired less-than-lethal rounds at the man as he sat in a gray Acura in the parking lot of Emulex, a technology company headquartered at 3333 Susan St. just after 3 p.m.
After a few tense moments, police arrested the man inside, said Sgt. Bryan Wadkins of the Costa Mesa Police Department. Along with the police car, two cars parked in the employee lot suffered damage from being hit by metal ball bearings.
“They could seriously hurt you or kill you if they hit you in the right spot,” Wadkins said. “They have some serious velocity.”
Sean Lake of Huntington Beach underwent a psychiatric evaluation late Tuesday after his arrest. Inside Lake’s Acura, authorities also found a pellet handgun and a replica submachine gun. Lake is not believed to have any connection with the company.
Lake was sentenced to 90 days in jail and three years probation after pleading guilty to a 2004 charge of being under the influence of a controlled substance and being under the influence of a controlled substance while in possession of a firearm.
Lake is being held on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer, assault with a deadly weapon on a security guard, and vandalism.

Bayou La Batre AL. (Metro Mobile Al.) July 31 2008
Bryan Hill
Ntl. Assoc. Private Officers
Bayou La Batre police arrested a Theodore man Monday in connection with the weekend theft of more than $8,000 worth of copper from a south Mobile County shipyard.
Police said they discovered the copper late Saturday after officers stopped a 1990 Honda Civic traveling on Alabama 188 at about
11:15 p.m. with its back end dragging on the pavement
Two men were in the car.
The weight of the valuable metal was enough to make the car scrape the highway, leaving marks in the road, police said.
“It actually scraped the muffler and tailpipe off,” said police spokesman Cpl. Jason Edwards. “Accord ing to the officers, it took three of them to unload this stuff.”
Police said the copper had been stolen Saturday evening from Master Boat Builders on Alba Avenue in Coden.
Police confiscated the copper and recorded the identities of the driver and his passenger, Edwards said. No arrests were made Saturday because there was no report of a theft, police said.
The owner of the shipyard filed a stolen-property report Monday morning, Edwards said.
One of the men in the car, William Howard Robinson, 29, was arrested Monday and charged with first-degree receiving stolen property, according to jail records.
Robinson was being held in Mobile County Metro Jail on Monday afternoon. A hearing to set bail was scheduled for Wednesday morning.
Police are still looking for the second man who was in the car, Edwards said. Police declined to disclose his identity.
The copper was valued at $8,210 in total, police said.

KY. Social Services looses most security www.privateofficer.com

KY. Social Services loose most of its security www.privateofficer.com

Louisville Ky July 31 2008
Bryan Hill
Ntl. Assoc. Private Officers
http://www.privateofficer.com

Employees at Kentucky’s largest social-services office say they are frightened and outraged by the state’s decision to eliminate nine of 11 security guards at Louisville’s L&N Building, where they often handle angry, sometimes violent clients

It makes me mad that now I have to fear coming to work every day,” said Noelle Milburn, a secretary who said she routinely encounters upset clients. “We need security in this building.”
Citing cuts prompted by the austere two-year budget lawmakers approved in April, the Cabinet for Health and Family Services tomorrow will eliminate all but two of its private security guards who patrol state offices that are spread over 10 floors of the former railroad company building.
That will leave one security guard to work at a visitor sign-in desk and a second to patrol the building.
Employees say that’s not nearly enough to handle clients whose children have been removed because of abuse or neglect, people angry at the loss of such benefits as food stamps, and others who might have drug or alcohol problems or suffer from severe mental illness.
Cabinet officials say they are doing the best they can with existing resources — though they realize the jobs carry risks.
“It is a dangerous environment in which we are working these days,” said Teresa James, the cabinet’s deputy director of social services.
The cabinet will save up to $900,000 a year through the cuts, budget adviser Beth Jurek said.
The state also is reducing security at seven “Neighborhood Place” centers in Jefferson County and at some other offices around the state, James said.
Though workers at the Louisville office said no one has been seriously injured in recent memory, they say clients have pushed, shoved and threatened workers. They credit the security staff with helping ensure nothing worse has happened.
Recently, workers said, an angry client shattered a window, and on Tuesday — the same day the cuts were announced — guards intervened in a fight among several clients, workers said.

Cabinet officials said they have no money for metal detectors at the L&N Building, though workers said yesterday that clients have brought in guns, knives and even a crowbar.
Velina Walker, who works at a reception desk in the building, said an angry client recently told her: “If I bring a gun, you’re going to be the first person I shoot.”
James said the cabinet has tried to improve security by limiting visitor access to one entrance, adding security cameras and continuing to train workers on safety.
James said state officials consulted with local supervisors at the L&N Building to decide on the security changes.
Jackie Stamps, the cabinet’s regional supervisor for Jefferson County, said state officials told her the L&N Building could keep more security guards if local supervisors were willing to cut staff, such as social workers.
But “with staff vacancies and rising caseloads, we just couldn’t give up positions,” she said.

Shoplifter says stealing is easier than work www.privateofficer.com

Shoplifter says stealing is easier than work http://www.privateofficer.com

Cynthiana KY (Metro Lexington ) July 31 2008
By: Rick McCann
Ntl. Assoc. Private Officers
http://www.privateofficer.com/
Police have charged a Georgetown woman with felony shoplifting July 20 and authorities say that she is believed to have been part of a shoplifting ring, Cynthiana Police said.
Police were first alerted July 19 of a possible shoplifting ring when a Cynthiana Wal-Mart manager discovered several empty DVD and video games boxes totaling $514, Cynthiana Police Cpl. Walter Tapp said.
Tapp reviewed security tapes with store personnel and said he was able to identify April Grondine, 21, and three other people as possible suspects.
Grondine already wanted for shoplifting charges then returned to the Cynthiana Wal-Mart on July 20 and loss prevention agents observed her attempting to steal $900 worth of video games and DVDs, Tapp said.
Security agents took her into custody and notified police who have charged her with two counts of felony shoplifting as well as two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument because she had altered her driver’s license, police believe to throw them off.
Grodine admitted to the thefts and said it was easier to steal then to work,” Tapp said.
“She basically deliberately made us do more work to connect her to the crimes by altering her license,” said Tapp.
In all, police recovered $1,500 dollars in stolen merchandise.
April Grondine bonded out of jail and police have issued warrants for three people wanted in the case, including a 16-year-old girl, but so far they have not been arrested.
Police in all three cities are investigating and say they are trying to connect this group to a similar rash of thefts at other big box retailers in Central Kentucky.

Police acting on a complaint from several people who were threatened at a nightclub have now charged one of the security officers working at the night club where another security guard was shot earlier this week with extortion, abduction and impersonating a police officer.
Early Monday, a security staffer at Club Mystique, in the 1500 block of General Booth Boulevard, was shot after an argument broke out.
The victim, whose identity was not released, is in critical condition. A 21-year-old man has been charged in the shooting.
On Wednesday, police said another member of the security staff at the club had been charged in an extortion scheme.
According to police, a man said he visited the club with friends on June 23 and was approached by two men working security.
Police say the customer told authorities the two men had badges, guns and radios and identified themselves as off-duty police officers.
The customer said the two men detained him, searched him and threatened him with arrest unless he paid them money, according to police. His iPod, cell phone and digital camera were missing after the search, he told police.
Police have charged Antonio Leon Smith, 32, of the 600 block of Homestead Avenue in Hampton, with extortion, two counts of abduction, use of a firearm in commission of a felony and impersonating a law enforcement officer.
Police say they are still trying to determine whether anyone else was involved.

Father, son die in plane crash www.privateofficer.com

Father, son die in plane crash http://www.privateofficer.com

Charlotte NC July 31 2008

Emergency workers in North Carolina have identified the two people who died in a plane crash Tuesday after taking off from Bowman Field as a father and son from Florida.
Duane Anthony Moorer Sr., 49, and Duane Anthony Moorer Jr., 22, died after the twin-engine Piper PA-23 crashed about five miles south of Highlands, N.C., said Warren Cabe, director of Macon County Emergency Services. The men were from Miramar, Fla.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash, which occurred about 3 p.m. in a wooded area. The plane was en route to Hazlehurst, Ga.
FAA records show the plane was registered to a Yan Venter Ministries Inc. in Rogers, Ark., but McCabe said the plane had recently been purchased by Midwest Atlantic Inc. in Miramar.
There were no published listings for the company, and it was not known why the men were in Louisville.
Witnesses told The Asheville Citizen-Times they heard what sounded like the engine stalling and saw debris falling off the 1955 Piper PA-23 plane in the moments before it went down.
Calls seeking further information about the investigation were not immediately returned by the FAA and the NTSB last night.
Trish Burke, a spokeswoman for the Louisville Regional Airport Authority, which oversees Bowman Field and Louisville International Airport, said she did not know why the plane was in Louisville.

Columbia SC July 31 2008

Ntl. Assoc. Private officers

The State Law Enforcement Division has arrested a 37-year-old North Augusta teacher who is accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a 14-year-old female pupil.
Shannon Fowler, an eighth-grade math teacher at Paul Knox Middle School, is charged with five counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, one count of enticing an enrolled child from attendance in school and one count of violating mandated test security regulations and procedures set forth by the state Board of Education.
Arrest affidavits said that Mrs. Fowler, of the 400 block of Pine Butte Lane in North Augusta, communicated with the student “all hours of the day and evening” and engaged the girl in “adult-themed conversations” that were inappropriate for a minor.
Jennifer Timmons, a spokeswoman for SLED, said “there is not enough evidence to determine if a sexual relationship existed at this time.”
According to the affidavits, on May 20 Mrs. Fowler bought the girl a prepaid Alltel cell phone without the knowledge or permission of the girl’s parents.
The warrants also allege that Mrs. Fowler encouraged the pupil to create a false persona to hide their friendship. The teacher is also accused of giving the girl a ride home from school several times a week without permission from the pupil’s parents, the arrest warrant said.
The investigation by SLED also found that the teacher discussed standardized test questions with the student, a violation of South Carolina law.
Agents began their investigation of Mrs. Fowler in June at the request of the North Augusta Department of Public Safety, according to SLED.
“The decision to call SLED was to eliminate any conflict that may arise as a result of this investigation due to Mrs. Fowler’s husband’s previous employment with the North Augusta Department of Public Safety,” Lt. Tim Pearson of public safety said in a statement.
Mrs. Fowler was freed from the Aiken County Detention Center today on a personal recognizance bond, according to a statement from the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.

Teen arrested with assault rifles, explosives, teacher hit list www.privateofficer.com

Teen arrested with assault rifles, explosives, teacher hit list http://www.privateofficer.com

Bethesda MD. July 31 2008
The Bethesda teenager in whose home investigators found a cache of assault rifles and bombmaking materials was compiling a list of home addresses for teachers at his former high school, police said yesterday.
Police officials said it was unclear why Colin McKenzie-Gude, 18, was making the list of teachers from St. John’s College High School, a private school in Northwest Washington from which he graduated this year.
Also yesterday, police said McKenzie-Gude’s father, Joseph L. Gude, 62, was charged with buying guns for his son, including at least some guns that the teenager was too young to own legally. Authorities have not said what, if anything, they think McKenzie-Gude planned to do with the weapons.
McKenzie-Gude turned himself in yesterday afternoon at a Montgomery police station in Rockville. He was charged in a warrant with five counts of possession of a firearm or ammunition by a minor, possession of a destructive device and possession of explosive material, police said.
Police said the guns at the home included assault rifles and a handgun that under Maryland law cannot be sold to anyone younger than 21.
On Tuesday, detectives and fire officials searched the family home in the 6300 block of Rockhurst Road after receiving a tip. Members of the county bomb squad found several assault rifles, two shotguns, one handgun and ammunition, police said.
They also found chemicals that could be used in making explosives, metal pipes and wires, according to fire and police officials.
Joseph Gude was charged with perjury, straw purchase of a firearm and straw purchase of a firearm for a minor not allowed to own the weapon, police said.
Police would not say how many teachers’ addresses were on McKenzie-Gude’s list.
Sometime yesterday, detectives met with officials at St. John’s to brief them on the case, said Lucile Barr, a spokeswoman for Montgomery police. At the time, investigators were concerned for the teachers’ safety because McKenzie-Gude was at large, a law enforcement source
St. John’s officials declined to comment. An English teacher at the school, reached by phone at his home yesterday, said faculty members had been advised not to speak with reporters.
Efforts to reach McKenzie-Gude and his father were not successful yesterday. A man who answered the phone at the home last night said, “Thank you for calling, goodbye,” and hung up.
McKenzie-Gude’s grandfather, retired Army Col. Joseph L. Gude, 87, of Chevy Chase, said the teenager had been on the rifle team at St. John’s and had earned good grades. “I always thought he was very nice, very polite,” he said of his grandson, adding that he was “pretty enthusiastic about the rifle team.”
Col. Gude added that his son, Joseph, served in Vietnam, spent nine years in the Air Force and has worked for the Treasury Department.
“My son is a well-disciplined man, raised by a pretty stern father,” Col. Gude said.
He said that people should reserve judgment about the case and that he doesn’t believe the list of teachers was connected to the weapons. “It could have been a Christmas card list or whatever,” he said. “I don’t think that list meant anything.”

HOUSTON TX July 30 2008

http://www.privateofficer.com/ — Investigators on Monday were piecing together the series of events that led to a fatal shooting outside an East Houston bar.
It happened near the Houston Ship Channel just after 1 a.m.
Investigators believe a security officer who was on duty at the Maria Bonita Tavern prevented a patron from entering, and an argument ensued.
Both the security guard and the patron reportedly pulled out weapons and started shooting.
After the shots were fired, the patron, who had sustained a bullet wound, returned to his car and left the scene. He drove a few blocks before careening into a ditch where a passing motorist found him and called 911.
Now police are asking questions as they conduct their investigation into whether this was a case of justified self-defense or a serious case of assault and murder by the security officer.
Police found the wounded man there and rushed him to Ben Taub, where he later died.
Police have yet to determine if charges will be filed against the security guard.

Security officer shoots, kills armed man www.privateofficer.com

Security officer shoots, kills armed man http://www.privateofficer.com

Chicago Heights IL. July 30 2008

Chicago Heights police said Tuesday that they don’t expect to file charges in the shooting death early Sunday of a 20-year-old man because he had fired shots during a brawl outside a nightclub, hitting three people.
Johnathan Williams, of Hazel Crest, was shot by a security guard during a ruckus outside the Esoteric club after he fired the shots, wounding one man critically, police said.
Police Lt. Michael Romano said a bouncer did not let Williams in the club, 150 Joe Orr Road, because he had caused a problem a week before. Williams later managed to get inside the 17-and-older club, where a fight broke out some time later and spilled into the parking lot, with frantic patrons trying to escape, Romano said.
Williams pulled a gun and began firing wildly, according to police.
“I don’t know if he had a specific target, but he was shooting toward the front door,” leading the security guard to decide to shoot him, Romano said.
He said Williams’ shots grazed two people and struck Darius Bell, 19, of Hazel Crest, in the chest.
Bell on Tuesday night remained in critical condition at Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
Three days into the investigation of the shootings, police have yet to recover the gun that Williams allegedly used. And they haven’t tracked down the bouncer who fired the shots.
That’s left Lorna Barrios, whose son was Williams’ best friend and was with him when he was gunned down, wondering where the accountability is. She said Williams began shooting when he saw her son being attacked.
“(The security guard) disappears, and no one can find him?” the Homewood mother said.
Romano said police are actively searching for the bouncer but so far have been unable to locate him.
Rumors are swirling that the guard is an off-duty police officer from another town, but Romano said that’s not so.
After the shootings, Chicago Heights officials shut down the club and suspended its liquor license. Mayor Anthony DeLuca said he wants the club to remain closed.
Club owner Victor Tieri, who was planning to sell the club before Sunday’s incident, said a promoter hired the armed security guards who worked at the club that night.
Barrios contends that the measures didn’t go far enough.
“If they had adequate security in that place, it wouldn’t have happened,” she said. “They would have broke (the fight) up and kept it moving. … This is a tragedy.”

Security officer attacked, robbed http://www.privateofficer.com

ORLANDO, Fla. July 30 2008

Ntl. Assoc. Private Officers
http://www.privateofficer.com/ An Orlando apartment complex security officer on duty at an area apartment complex was taken to the hospital after being attacked and robbed, early Wednesday morning.
Orlando police said the security guard was patroling the complex when his attackers roughed him up then stole his gun and his taser.
The security officer managed to get away and ran to an apartment for help. The suspects tried to shoot the guard with the taser, but missed and drove off, sideswiping the security officer’s car.
Residents said the security gate to the complex has been broken for weeks, and it is too expensive to fix. One tenant said she isn’t surprised the robbery happened.
“Someone got robbed last Wednesday with a gun. Two months ago a pregnant lady got robbed with a gun,” said resident Mabel Lopez.
Police said the security guard has non-life threatening injuries and unfortunately he did not get a good look at the get away car.
Police did not release the name of the injured security officer or the name of his employer.

12 YR Old Found With Assault Rifle www.privateofficer.com

12 Yr Old Found With Assault Rifle http://www.privateofficer.com

DAYTON OH July 30 2008 — Four adults and three young people were taken into custody Tuesday night, July 29, after police dispatched on a report of shots fired found a 12-year-old walking around in a residence carrying an assault rifle.
Police were dispatched to a residence in the 1900 block of Catalpa Drive sometime after 10 p.m. on numerous reports of shots fired, Dayton Lt. John Bardun said.
Officers looked in a window of the residence and witnessed the boy carrying an SKS assault rifle, Bardun said, noting that an initial investigation revealed the boy had been in the backyard earlier in the evening, firing the weapon.
Officers found proof of that, locating 10 to 15 spent shell casings in the yard near children’s play equipment, Bardun said.
Police dispatch then issued a “99″ — officer needs assistance.
Several officers responded to the address, forced entry to the residence, wrestled their way past an adult and seized the rifle, a 50-round clip and numerous handguns, Bardun said. There were several open bottles of vodka throughout the house, he said.
No one was hurt. No charges were immediately filed, but the adults and young people were taken to police headquarters downtown for questioning. The adults were being held pending charges of child endangerment.
Betty Venters, a neighbor, said, “I don’t know what they are thinking, firing off guns right near a daycare center.”
She spoke while holding her 18-month-old baby.
Ironically, Bardun said the front door to the residence featured a emblem depicting the picture of a handgun and the words, “We aren’t calling 9-1-1.”

Cub Scout Leader Charged With Child Molestation www.privateofficer.com

Cub Scout Leader Arrested For Child Molestation http://www.privateofficer.com

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (Metro Atlanta) July 29 2008 Authorities investigating a Gwinnett County Cub Scout leader has been arrested on child molestation charges.
Authorities took Harry “Brett” Taylor into custody after a boy’s mother went to police and reported that Taylor touched her 8-year-old son inappropriately.
The alleged incident took place during a sleepover with Taylor’s children at a residence in the 1700 block of Bergen Ct in Lawrenceville.
The two children knew each other through Cub Scouts where the suspect was their Cub Scout leader.
Authorities said that they received a call from the childs parents who said that the victim stated that sometime during the night, Taylor touched his genital area. The victim also stated that the suspect had photographed him while he was drying off and undressing after exiting their swimming pool.
Gwinnett police said they are investigating two more complaints filed since the initial report of alleged misconduct.
Authorities said Taylor has been on Gwinnett County’s library board since January 2006.
“This is why we’re asking if anybody has been in contact with Mr. Taylor or their children have been in contact, to please speak with their children and see if there’s any inappropriate touching or contact with Mr. Taylor…and if so, to contact our investigators,” said Cpl. David Schiralli with the Gwinnett County Police Department.
During the investigation, authorities said they learned that the Taylor had been molesting another family member for over an extended period of time and more charges are pending against him.

Members of the Gwinnett County library board said that they are shocked and saddened by the allegations.
Gwinnett County library board members said Taylor is still a member of the board as of Monday evening.
Authorities said Taylor is charged with four counts of child molestation and one count of sexual battery. Police said that additional charges will more than likely be forthcoming and that their investigation is on going
Taylor is currently being held without bond at the Gwinnett County Detention Center.

Morgue worker charged with sexual abuse of corpse www.privateofficer.com

Morgue worker charged with sexual abuse of corpse http://www.privateofficer.com

CINCINNATI OH July 29 2008 — A grand jury indicted a former employee of a Cincinnati coroner’s office with the abuse of a corpse more than two decades ago, authorities in Cincinnati reported.
Prosecutors said Kenneth Douglas, 55, of Westwood, Ohio, sexually assaulted the body of 19-year-old Karen Range, who was murdered during an attempted rape Aug. 19, 1982, at her home.
She had been severely beaten and had her throat slashed with a paring knife.
David Steffen was sentenced to death in 1983 for her murder, but his attorneys had argued at trial that he did not rape her.
Investigators said they were unable to eliminate Steffen as a rape suspect by using a blood test on semen found on Range’s body, and DNA testing had not been developed at the time of Steffen’s trial.
A DNA test was performed last year, and Douglas was identified as a suspect after he was convicted March 17 of drug trafficking and ordered to provide a DNA sample.
Investigators discovered that Douglas had worked as a morgue attendant when Range’s body had been at the lab for testing, and prosecutors said he removed her body from a refrigeration unit and sexually assaulted it.
“There are no words to describe the disgust everyone associated with this case feels,” said Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters.
If convicted, Douglas faces up to 12 months in prison.
Douglas worked for the coroner’s office from 1976 to 1992, and prosecutors added that they are investigating whether any other offenses were committed during that period.
“I think we have an obligation to the residents of this county to review every autopsy that occurred in his 16 years of service,” Deters said.
Steffen admitted to killing Range and was indicted on two charges related to her slaying, but his attorneys have argued during appeals that his death sentence should be overturned because he had not raped her.

BRAINTREE MA July 29 2008
Police arrested two Boston women and a Quincy woman following unrelated thefts at South Shore Plaza stores.
Maria D. Vazquez-Santiago, 47, of Mattapan, and Hildelisa Reyes, 19, of Dorchester were arrested Thursday afternoon after security at Sears detained them.
They were spotted on surveillance cameras as they allegedly hid merchandise in their pocketbooks.
The women were stopped after they left the store without paying for the items, police said.
Police said Reyes initially gave a phony name.
More than $300 worth of merchandise, including jewelry and perfume, was recovered.
Both were charged with larceny of property worth more than $250.
Less than an hour later, police went to Kmart on Grossman Drive to investigate a shoplifting complaint.
The store’s security told officers they witnessed Nina J. Nelson, 41, of Quincy concealing more than $100 worth of merchandise in her pocketbook and then leaving the store.
Nelson also gave a false name when she was apprehended, police said.
While searching Nelson’s car in the parking lot, officers found more than $400 worth of merchandise that had been stolen from Macy’s at the plaza.
In addition to the shoplifting arrest, Nelson was also charged with receiving stolen property worth more than $250.

Officers responding to the area arrested Robert A. Miller, 35, of Tomkins Street, Pittston, and Anthony Robert Lukasavage, 35, of Main Street, Jenkins Township, and both were charged with theft and criminal conspiracy to commit theft. Miller was also charged with driving a vehicle with a suspended license, according to arrest records.
They were jailed at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility for lack of $10,000 bail each.
According to the criminal complaints filed by Officer Christopher J. Purcell:
