FREE SECURITY OFFICER TRAINING
Atlanta GA July 9 2008

I think by now most of the world knows and would agree that many security officers are under trained and that many security agencies and “in-house” security departments do a poor job of offering any real training.

Because of low pay, officers can not personally afford to seek out the expensive and often times out of reach training that is readily available to security managers and supervisors through a number of private companies.
Thus, a dilemma continues to exist for the security officer who really want to step up their game and are looking for ways of securing better training to enhance their security career.

We have several easy and free ways that security officers can begin to obtain training in areas of first-aid, law enforcement, laws, police techniques and more.

First- A very inexpensive way to start is by taking a CPR and first aid course available at the American Red Cross for about $30.00.
The new course also includes using the AED, Automated External Defibrillator.

This basic course will prepare you for most filed emergency medical situations and help you to stabilize and injured person until paramedics arrive on scene.
Certification will also be a feather in cap when you are applying for certain security positions and will help you to be worth more to a company.
You can also go a step further an take an EMT, Emergency Medical Technician class for about $100.00.

Another great way to further you rescue, emergency services and fire suppression skills is to join a neighborhood volunteer rescue or fire department.
Most states now require volunteers to undergo similar training and certification as full time firefighters and volunteer departments now offer certified training courses as a firefighter, rescue technician, hazmat specialist and so on.
This state certification training is offered FREE by the departments.
The only cost to you will be your time. which is a good and fair trade off. You spend one or two nights a week and end up being state certified.
To continue your free training, I strongly recommend join the volunteer rescue, EMS or fire department.
You’ll continue to update your skills, training and experience as you’re giving back to your community.

Why is this type of training necessary you ask?

In any field, whether you’re a police officer, an engineer, nurse or security officer, it’s all about knowledge and experience. The more that you know and the more certifications that you have under your belt, the more you are worth to a company. When you are looking for a career position, you’ll be able to market yourself as a trained and experienced professional security officer, not just an untrained hourly guard.
In preparation for a supervisory or management role within the security industry, you’ll need to take as many courses on a variety of relative subjects as possible.
This first-aid and fire suppression training is expected and necessary in many public safety positions such as colleges, school systems, shopping malls and industrial positions.

Another great way to get some free training is by going through the CERT training in your area. CERT, Civilian Emergency Response Team, which was a program that was revamped from the old civil defense after the 9/11 tragedy is a great course that trains about search and rescue, urban situations and disasters, first-aid and emergency response. Also upon completion of the course you’ll be issued a certificate, another great item for your resume.
Besides the great training, it’s also great fun!

Now that you have first-aid and CPR, search and rescue, fire suppression and emergency response training under your belt, you can look at taking additional law enforcement training.
A fantastic and free way of doing this is by undergoing the training offered through your local police or sheriff agency by attending their Citizen Police Academy. This 6-10 week course offers great insight and yes even great training in patrol, criminal law, emergencies, and law enforcement techniques and it’s absolutely FREE!
You’ll have a chance to participate in classroom and in field training including “ride-along”. It could also be the determining factor for you to become a police offcer!

And again, upon completion, you’ll be issued a certificate! Another great item for your resume!

You may also want to consider joining your local auxiliary or reserve police or sheriff force! This training which is state certified will give you police academy education and certification at no cost to you!
As I stated earlier, it’s fantastic training and it’s free but it’s also a great way for you to obtain in depth training and experience while giving back to your community. You will enjoy it and benefit from it and you’ll be able to use the training for your community as well as your security career.

Security officer specific training is also available for a small fee through three security associations.
The National Association of Private Officers, which offers free monthly training on their website (http://www.privateofficer.com/) or certification courses in three specific areas of security.
The N.A.P.O. also offers on location classroom and field training, weapons certification and other courses.
CD and interactive web training is also available.

The International Foundation of Protection Officers is another security association which offers training courses. The IFPO also offers certification courses and materials.

The largest and most recognized association is called the American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS) and offers training and materials mostly geared toward management level personnel.
It also has a yearly conference and offers a certified protection professional course which is a designation that is accepted and recognized by many employers as well as government agencies.

The security industry is rapidly changing and there are many opportunities for advancement and a solid career should you choose this field. But as with any position, in order to make the income and hold the upper level positions, you must have training and experience.
If you are considering a career in the private security filed, I strongly recommend that you take advantage of the above listed training as well as any criminal justice courses or other classes available at your local community or technical college.
Homeland Security is still a hot topic in our field and any certification or degree in this area will also greatly enhance your career and your salary.

Waukesha WI July 9 2008 A man accused of using his cell phone camera to record a video of a woman trying on lingerie in a dressing room pleaded guilty Monday to a reduced charge and was fined $728.
If Thomas W. Schoen, 39, of Cicero, Ill., and formerly of East Troy, doesn’t pay the fine for attempting to capture an image of nudity, a misdemeanor, within eight months, he must serve 15 days in jail.
Schoen, a former security officer at J.C. Penney’s at Brookfield Square, committed the offense on Nov. 7, according to a criminal complaint filed in Waukesha County Circuit Court. He was originally charged with a felony of capturing an image of nudity, a felony. A disorderly conduct charge was dismissed.
A woman told authorities that while she was trying on bras in a fitting room, she looked down and noticed a camera or cell phone and a hand protruding from underneath a partition. At the time, the woman was naked from the waist up. The woman immediately put on a shirt, walked over to the adjacent fitting room, opened the door and found a man later identified as Schoen kneeling on the floor, the complaint says.
Schoen contended he committed the offense because he suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder after serving in the war in Iraq, court records say. He served in the Marine Corps from 1987 to 1990 and in the Army from 2002 to 2006, according to court records.

Shoplifter drowns after running from store http://www.privateofficer.com

Houston TX July 9 2008
According to investigators, Mario Lira and two other males walked into the Academy Store at the 13400 block of the East Freeway July 7 and apparently were switching their old shoes for new ones.
One of the three was speaking to the manager who asked him what he was doing,” said John Cannon, Houston Police Department spokesman.
“He claimed he had forgotten he had the shoes on and gave back the new shoes.”At the same time, the man was talking to the manager, Lira and Marco Antonio Hinojosa, 18, ran out the back of the store, which led to Greens Bayou.
Lira apparently ran down the embankment into the bayou, Cannon said. Hinojosa came back in the store, told the employees his friend was in the bayou underwater and needed help.
Members of the Houston Police Department and Houston Fire Department arrived soon after, Cannon said, and then the police department’s dive team showed up.
Lira’s body was recovered at 6:40 p.m.”There was evidence of the shoes taken from the store when they recovered his body,” Cannon said.
Hinojosa was arrested and charged with misdemeanor theft. The other suspect who was questioned by the store’s manger was questioned and released with no charges.
According to Cannon, Lira stole a pair of white Converse shoes, while Hinojosa stole a pair of black Puma shoes.
According to sources at the Harris County District Clerk’s Office, Hinojosa will appear in court July 15 and is currently in the custody of Immigration and Naturalization Services.

KINGSTON MA. July 9 2008
A Middleboro woman was arrested after allegedly stealing merchandise from a Target store and becoming part of an extended police pursuit.
Officers this morning were still looking for a man who was involved in the theft and drove the getaway truck, police said.
Police said that they received a call at about 2:10 p.m. Tuesday from a witness at the Independence Mall, reporting a shoplifting from the Target store.
Officers responded and the witness pointed out a 2001 Dodge Dakota pickup truck that was leaving the area with two occupants.
Police said officers tried to stop the truck in the mall parking lot, but the driver refused to stop.
Kingston police followed the truck onto Commerce Way in Plymouth, with the driver refusing to slow down or stop, police said.
The driver then turned right at the end of Commerce Way and came back into Kingston, where an officer again tried to stop it.
The driver continued into Carver and Middleboro.
Kingston police finally stopped the truck on a dirt road with a gate.
A man driving the truck and a female passenger ran off.
Mae J. Roberts of Middleboro was caught a short time later and charged with receiving stolen property over $250, police said.
She was also held on three default warrants, police said.
Several thousand dollars’ worth of merchandise was recovered from the truck, police said.

Jail officer assaulted with his own badge www.privateofficer.com

Jail deputy assaulted with his own badge http://www.privateofficer.com

BELFAST, Maine July 9 2008
Kyle T. Greene
Ntl. Assoc. Private officers
http://www.privateofficer.com/ A prisoner who told officers he had nothing to lose by his actions ripped the badge from the shirt of a Waldo County Jail corrections officer and assaulted him with it.
Scott Noble, 25, of Belfast was charged with assault on a corrections officer after the Sunday afternoon incident at the jail.
“He told the officers he wasn’t worried and that he had nothing to lose because he was facing 40 years in prison,” Chief Deputy Robert Keating said Monday.
Keating said Noble was being held at the Maine State Prison but was relocated to Belfast over the weekend to attend jury selection in Waldo County Superior Court on Monday. He was arrested on May 2, 2006, in Belfast after he allegedly stabbed another man in the back during a dispute. He was charged with elevated aggravated assault, aggravated assault and violation of conditions of release and is scheduled to go to trial this month.
Keating said Noble had been “disruptive” since he arrived at the jail from the prison. On Sunday, he attempted to dismantle the security camera in his cell. Keating said Noble repeatedly ignored orders to stop what he was doing.
When the corrections officer entered the cell, Noble grabbed him by the shirt and ripped off his badge and began swinging at the guard with the badge in his fist. Other guards rushed to the cell and quickly subdued the struggling Noble. The badge had to be forcibly removed from his grip and he was placed in restraints, Keating said.

Man dies from shellfish allergy after served wrong dinner www.privateofficer.com

Man dies from shellfish allergy after served wrong dinner entree http://www.privateofficer.com

LOVEJOY, Ga. July 9 2008
By: Rick McCann
Ntl. Assoc. Private Officers
www.privateofficer.com A man with a shellfish allergy is dead after eating an entree with crab at a restaurant.
An autopsy Monday confirmed that 35-year-old Rodney Hawkins went into anaphylactic shock and died after eating the dish at a Ruby Tuesday restaurant in Lovejoy last week. Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokesman John Bankhead said Hawkins had ordered a chicken dish that contained no shellfish but was served another chicken dish that contained crab.
Hawkins immediately began showing symptoms and collapsed at the restaurant, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
But Rick Johnson, spokesman for the Marvyille, Tenn.-based Ruby Tuesday company, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the server’s order pad and the kitchen ticket indicate that Hawkins ordered the Chicken Oscar, a dish with crab meat. Johnson called the situation “tragic” and expressed condolences for Hawkins’ family.

Rodney “Krook” Hawkins’ wife disputes the Maryville, Tenn.-based chain’s account, saying — through a family representative — that her husband did not order the Chicken Oscar entree, which contains crab meat. Linda Hawkins accompanied her husband to the restaurant.

We will do what is necessary to see that this doesn’t happen again,” said Chicago attorney Joseph Leonardi, speaking on behalf of the Hawkins family.
Hawkins, 35, collapsed and went into anaphylactic shock Thursday night soon after consuming the shellfish at the Ruby Tuesday on Tara Boulevard, according to an autopsy conducted by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. The welder and aspiring rapper was rushed to Southern Regional Medical Center and pronounced dead a half hour later.
Investigators have suggested a mix-up in the dinner order, but won’t file any criminal charges.
“He had ordered the Chicken Fresco and the Chicken Oscar was brought out by mistake,” said GBI spokesman John Bankhead.
Ruby Tuesday said its own review revealed no such error.
The two dishes, restaurant officials point out, differ significantly in appearance. Chicken Fresco is topped with a tomato slice and chopped green herbs, while Chicken Oscar has crab meat and asparagus spears.
“She [the server] is very clear that he repeated more than one time that Chicken Oscar was his choice,” said Johnson, whose company has more than 25 metro Atlanta locations. “We don’t believe there was any confusion on her part. Had he been confused . . . when the dish was brought to the table it would be been clearly visible to him that it had crab meat on it.”
Virginia Hawkins said in a phone interview from her Momence, Ill., home that her brother was allergic to shellfish since childhood. She said he moved from Illinois to metro Atlanta to pursue a rap music career.
Anaphylaxis occurs when a trigger activates immune cells, which then release large amounts of multiple substances, including histamine, into the bloodstream, according to UpToDate

N.A.P.O. Commits $1000.00 to Bring Curt Home Fund http://www.privateofficer.com

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Wednesday, July 9, 2008

ATLANTA GA.
Media Release 7.1

Reward Fund in ‘Bring Curt Home’ Campaign Now at $6,000

(Seabrook, NH) – The reward fund to find the remains of Curtis Pishon, the New Hampshire security guard believed murdered while on duty on an overnight shift at the former Venture Corporation in Seabrook when he disappeared in July 2000, has received a $1,000 donation, increasing the fund from $5,000 to $6,000.

The National Association of Private Officers, based in Atlanta, Georgia, made a $1,000 donation to the reward fund.
The Pishon family and Seabrook Police believe those responsible for Pishon’s disappearance live in the Seabrook community, but a local ‘code of silence’ prevents anyone with credible information from coming forward. “The people responsible for this crime are walking among you,” Seabrook Detective Sergeant Michael Gallagher told The Daily News of Newburyport recently. “To have information and withhold it for whatever reason amounts to moral cowardice,” he added.
In 2007, given the suspicious circumstances of his disappearance, Curtis was declared legally dead by his parents, Nicholas Sr., and Astrid Pishon, in accordance with the seven-year waiting period under New Hampshire State law. Since then, Curt’s parents and siblings have renewed a search to locate his remains to give Curtis a proper burial.

A website, FINDCURT.COM, and toll free phone number – 1-866-97-FINDCURT – were created by the Pishon family for public information and anonymous tips.

Pishon, a U.S. Army veteran and graduate of Franklin Pierce College, left the Concord Police Department after ten years following a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis in 1994. He worked as a security guard for Reliable Security Guard Agency and was on duty on the third shift at Venture Corporation, a now-defunct company which manufactured plastic parts for automobiles, when he disappeared over the July 4th, 2000, Holiday.

Elderly shopper injured during shoplifting incident http://www.privateofficer.com

Richmond KY July 9 2008

A 69-year old woman could lose part of a thumb after Wal-Mart employees got into a scuffle Thursday with a suspected shoplifter.

An altercation developed when Wal-Mart employees confronted Darvin Walker, 22, of Mahaffey Drive in Richmond, at about 1:52 p.m., said Richmond Police spokesperson Sgt. Willard Reardon.
Walker allegedly fled on foot and was apprehended by Richmond Police officers a few minutes later near Roy Kidd Stadium, a short distance from Wal-Mart on the Eastern Bypass, Reardon said.Officers who responded to Wal-Mart, including Chief Larry Brock, caught sight of Walker running from the store as they arrived, Reardon said.
“This lady was an innocent bystander,” he said. “Unfortunately, she somehow got caught in the middle of the physical altercation that ensued after the suspect was confronted.“The tip of her thumb was torn off after it apparently got caught in a shopping cart that got turned over.
”The victim was transported to the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, said Reardon, who would not release her name or address.
“Store loss prevention people usually do a pretty good job of getting people out of the way when they confront a suspect,” he said.“However, unforeseen things happen sometimes.”Walker will be charged with first-degree robbery and second-degree fleeing and evading and could face other charges, Reardon said.
“Anytime a shoplifting suspect gets into a physical struggle with a store employee, what would have been a theft charge is elevated to a robbery charge,” he said.Reardon was unsure of what merchandise Walker allegedly was attempting to steal.

Some police departments require “verified response” on burglar alarms www.privateofficer.com

Some police departments require “verified response” on burglar alarms http://www.privateofficer.com

Atlanta GA. July 9 2008
BY: Rick McCann
Ntl. Assoc. Private Officers

Some police departments are saying that there are too many burglar and fire alarms that cry wolf and with reductions of manpower and budgets, many departments no longer will repond to unverfied alarms.
Automatic response by the Columbus Ohio police is being axed from their daily duties. Two cities in Georgia recently canceled their response to burglar alarms that have not been verified by a third party such as a security officer or a citizen on scene.
As part of a plan to reduce mounting costs for police and fire overtime, officers soon might require security companies to verify that a crime is taking place before responding to alarms, Department of Public Safety officials said yesterday.

Assistant Director Barb Seckler said Columbus police respond to all alarms — about 75,000 annually — even though an estimated 95 percent go off in error. The city charges homeowners and businesses for repeated false alarms, but Seckler said fines don’t cover police costs.

So-called “verified response” would require an alarm company or private security agency to confirm for police that they’re needed at an actual crime scene. It’s not a popular policy with the alarm industry.

“Verified response is non-response,” said David Simon, a spokesman for Brink’s Home Security, a Dallas-based company with 1.2 million customers nationwide.

Only about 30 U.S. cities have adopted the idea under consideration in Columbus, Simon said.
The Dallas police tried the “verified response” but City Council voted last September to repeal its verified-response policy.
Businesses, are big taxpapyers and they demand and expect this service whether it’s a real burglary or not said Sgt. Billy McKay.

Simon said he would recommend higher false-alarm fines instead, or a policy that cuts off police response to places that have repeated false alarms. Columbus now charges $100 for the third or fourth call, and fines escalate to $800 each after the ninth.

Jim Gilbert, president of the Fraternal Order of Police Capital City Lodge No. 9, said false alarms don’t contribute much to overtime costs. Burglar alarms are a lower priority for police than violent crimes, he said.

Some cities continue argue that alarm calls are a drain on their resources. Countless manhours are put into responding to these false alarms each year. Most larms activate due to owner error or the weather, McKay said. We have to send two beat officers to every alarm activation and tie them up for at least 30 minutes each time. Police departments can not continue providing the level of service that we once did an officer said. We’re strapped and alarms are a nuisance and not reliable. Just because an alarm goes off doesn’t mean that there’s a crime in progress the officer said.

Homes that are being built or sold with residential alarms already installed is a sought after essential said Mary Borrelli a New Jersey realtor. It makes the owners feel a bit safer and offers them peace of mind.

Security experts agree that many alarms that go off are user errors or caused by heavy weather situations such as windy conditions but say that verified response will add to the rise of burglaries and put homeowners in greater danger of home invasions since police won’t immediately respond to the alarm. Business could also see a jump in robberies.
But McKay said that wouldn’t happen because police in verified response cities still automatically respond to panic and hold-up alarms.

Security guard charged in assault incident http://www.privateofficer.com

NASHVILLE, Tenn. July 9 2008 A man who said he was “sucker-punched” and knocked senseless said a security guard hired to guard his building encouraged someone to attack him.
Lonnie Hutton is a resident at Vine Hill Towers, a Nashville high-rise owned by the city for older and disabled citizens.
Channel 4′s I-Team reported last week that the security guard, Everett York, turned out to be not only unlicensed, but a convicted sex offender.

Hutton said that on June 19, York distracted him so a second man could blind-side him with a punch to his neck.
“The guy hit me in the head with a ski pole over and over again after he punched me,” Hutton said.
Hutton said York just “sat back and watched.”
Metropolitan Development and Housing Agency would later find out that York was a convicted sex offender and that the company he worked for, KRC Security, had an expired security license.
On Monday, MDHA fired the company. York will be prosecuted in connection with the attack.
“Why did they hire him? Why did the security company hire him to begin with?” Hutton said.
The security company said it didn’t know about the sex offender conviction.
“If I’d have known any way possible this guy was a registered sex offender, I mean, you know, we would have never, ever, ever hired this guy,” said owner Michael Kinnard in a previous report.
The second person involved in the case and the person accused of the actual attack is Kenneth Patterson, who’s charged with aggravated assault.
Hutton said he was wearing a Batman mask to try to scare the security guard on the night of the attack and that the ski pole was his ski pole, which he used in place of a cane.

TULLAHOMA TN July 9 2008

Ntl. Assoc. Private Officers
www.privateofficer.com Authorities are investigating a case where thieves trying to steal copper, cut guy wires of a large towering cell tower and caused it to collapse.
Service is not expected to be fully restored for another two weeks after the cell phone tower in Tracy City was pulled down in an apparent attempt by thieves to get the copper, according to the sheriff’s department.
Guy wires were cut this past weekend to get a 360-foot DTC Wireless tower to fall. A DTC official says no one has been arrested as of yet but that this theft and damage to property is under investigation by sheriff and police investigators.
Cleveland of CFC Recycling near Tullahoma told The Tullahoma News that scrap metal prices are at an all-time high. Copper is now selling at slightly more than $3 per pound, he said.Cleveland said a weak dollar overseas has increased scrap metal demand because foreign markets can buy more U.S. products more cheaply than ever. He said the process has driven prices up worldwide.
This has thieves scurrying everywhere trying to steal as much scrap metal and copper as possible regardless of whose property that they damage or whose life that they put in danger police said.

MIFFLINBURG PA July 9 2008
By: Bryan Hill
Ntl. Assoc. Private Officers
http://www.privateofficer.com/ A 59-year-old man charged last week for allegedly raping a 15-year-old boy at his home had been employed as a Mifflinburg School District security guard at the time of or shortly before his arrest, authorities said today.
Barry Tomasetti, Mifflinburg school superintendent, would not say whether Jerry Dale Haines, of 201 Meadowlark Lane, resigned or was fired from the district. Tomasetti did confirm to the media on Monday that Haines no longer works for the school.
When asked about how long Haines had served as a security guard for the district, school board member Donita Keister replied: “It is not our policy to discuss personnel matters outside the board room. Please be advised that he is no longer employed by the district.”
Police investigators said that the boy said Haines had sexual contact with him in February 2006. The boy, whose name was not released, told police that Haines entered his bedroom and asked for oral sex. The boy told police Haines sexually assaulted him again later that same night.
In addition to rape, Haines has been charged with statutory sexual assault and involuntary deviate sexual intercourse.
Investigators released few details of the incident or how Haines knew the boy or how he was in his house on the day in question.

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. July 9 2008
Kyle T. Greene
Ntl. Assoc. Private Officers
http://www.privateofficer.com/ – Homeland Security and Johns Creek police are investigating an alleged illegal dental office operating inside a home.
Claudinette Varon-Castro is facing multiple charges for allegedly operating an illegal dentist office inside a home on Ogeechee Drive.
Officials said Varon-Castro had much of the needed equipment to do the job but she didn’t have a dentistry license.
“It did not look like a business operation from the outside,” said neighbor Sharon Ferrar.
“We believe there’s illegal dental work going on,” said Capt. Brian Weaver with the Johns Creek Police Department.
The first floor of her home in a quiet Johns Creek neighborhood is where Varon-Castro practiced her skills, according to investigators. Authorities told Channel 2 her patients were usually immigrants who may not have understood how dangerous her dental practice could be.
Ferrar, said she understands the risks because her father is a licensed dentist in another state.
“I don’t know how safe it is to come in and have X-rays and dental procedures out of somebody’s home,” said Ferrar.
Channel 2 attempted to talk with Varon-Castro, a native of Colombia, but was unsuccessful. Investigators said she had hundreds of prescription pills and other medicines inside her home as well. Homeland Security is also looking in to the case.
“(We don’t know) whether the tools are being thouroughly sanitized or cleaned like they should be and whether or not (patients) have been exposed to radiation when you have the X-ray machine. That’s real, real scary,” said Weaver.
Varon-Castro, who is in the United States on a visa, is out on bond. She faces several charges including practicing dentistry without a license.
