Four Boise teenagers — three females and a male — are facing felony burglary charges after Meridian police say they they stole $45 worth of items Monday at Wal-Mart.
Marisela M. Camarillo, 18; Idalia B. Carreon, 19; and Josefina Escobedo, 19; and Harold T. Gallemore, 18, are all charged with burglary. They are being held in the Ada County Jail and are awaiting a court appearance Monday.
Meridian police officials said the group went into the Wal-Mart at 4051 E. Fairview Ave. just after 8 p.m. Monday and began stuffing items such as T-shirts, lip gloss, socks, earrings, and nail polish in a backpack worn by Gallemore before attempting to leave the store without paying for the items.
The four are charged with felony burglary because police say they entered the store with the intent to steal, Meridian Police Lt. Bob Stowe said.
The decision to charge the teens with felony burglary instead of the lesser charge of misdemeanor petit theft was the decision of the arresting officer, Stowe said.
Stowe said it can be hard to prove intent in many shoplifting cases, so those suspects are usually charged with a misdemeanors. He said the officer in this case felt he had evidence to support the felony charge.
Ada County prosecutors will make the ultimate decision on what the charges will be, Stowe said.
The charge of felony burglary is punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
