www.privateofficer.com For the second time in as many days armored truck security officers found themselves in a gunbattle in south Florida.
On Wednesay, a security officer was shot several times by five men with assault rifles in a robbery attempt outside a West Palm Beach bank.
On Thursday, another gunfight erupted, this time just outside a Miani bank
Police say that the Thursday robbery has left one suspect dead and sent a security guard to the hospital, police said.
Two armed suspects approached two armored truck guards at a Wachovia bank branch in Homestead, Miami-Dade police said. The armed suspect tried to hold them up and engaged the security officers in a gun fight and was killed during the shootout with the guards, police said. One guard was in stable condition in a Homestead hospital, but police did not say how he was injured.
Authorities swarmed the area and began an all out search for a second armed suspect. Using dogs and helicopters police went block by block but didn’t find anyone as of later afternoon.
Police are releasing few details about this shooting and robbery attempt as the investigation continues.
Aerial television news footage showed a crashed white van, the windshield riddled with bullets.

COLLEGE HILL OH Aug 1 2008

www.privateofficer.com - The chief of a private police agency is worried his business cards and equipment may be used to impersonate a police officer.
Someone broke into his David Boehm’s marked vehicle and stole equipment Tuesday.
It happened sometime between 2 and 6 a.m. in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 800 block of West North Bend Road in College Hill, Boehm said.
Boehm runs the Southern Ohio Enforcement Bureau, a private police security company.
The passenger window of his marked Ford Taurus was broken to gain entry, he said.
His laptop computer, handcuffs, business cards and other items were taken, he said.
The interior of the car was also damaged. The vehicle was locked and the equipment was bolted down, but the thief cut the wires, he said.
“They took everything they could get their hands on,” Boehm said.
“It seemed malicious and could’ve been someone I’ve dealt with before.”

Dillard’s employee charged with theft and fraud www.privateofficer.com

As Collierville resident Monica Maynard scanned her credit card bill, she didn’t remember purchasing any high-priced clothing from Dillard’s department store at The Avenue Carriage Crossing.
“I came home and opened my mail and noticed that my bill was awfully high and I saw two purchases (at Dillard’s) on June 13,” Maynard said
But by the time she realized someone had stolen her credit card number the criminal had racked up an $800 tab.

Collierville police checked the store’s surveillance footage and made an arrest the following day.

Former Dillard’s employee Jennie Lynn Brady is accused of stealing Maynard’s credit card number from the store’s client files and making two purchases totaling $792 on June 13.

Brady faces two counts of identity theft, two counts of forgery and theft of property.

She was arraigned Tuesday and her next court date will be Aug. 26.

“It’s frustrating,” Maynard said. “You wonder who has your information.”

Maynard notified police on June 24 that someone used her credit card.

The following day, officers questioned Brady who insisted she bought the items with her grandmother’s credit card.

Police gave her 24 hours to report back to investigators with her grandmother’s credit card. When she didn’t show, officers went to Brady’s apartment and found her car full of personal belongings and clothes.

According to the police affidavit, officers asked why she didn’t report back and Brady said, “OK, I did it.”

This was the second time Maynard has been the victim of identity theft.

If convicted on all charges, Brady faces up to seven years in jail, according to Collierville Lt. Philip Arnold.

TSA monitors more than luggage www.privateofficer.com

TSA monitors more than luggage http://www.privateofficer.com

AUSTIN, TEXAS Aug 1 2008 Transportation Security Administration officials aren’t just concerned with what is in your luggage anymore.
Some are being trained to assess what’s going through your mind.
Behavior Detection Officers who work for the TSA go through a week long training in order to look for travelers displaying involuntary physical and physiological reactions that indicate stress, fear or deception.
Though the agency won’t go into detail about what those indicators are, they say it’s a sophisticated process to determine who needs additional screening.
“There are certain thresholds that this individual needs to meet in our behavioral detection program.
We don’t just see someone who is nervous and pull them over to talk with them,” said TSA spokeswoman Andrea McCauley.
McCauley denied any profiling takes place during the screening and said the BDO’s are trained on cultural sensitivity as well.
Meanwhile, many travelers agree with the additional screening, saying if it’s necessary to keep passengers safe then it’s something they’ll tolerate.
“Nobody wants their rights infringed upon, but if you’re not doing anything wrong, what are you worried about?” said traveler James Vint.
But, not all travelers feel that way, saying the screening is too subjective.
“Some people get nervous about smaller things than others,” said traveler Anthony Platt. “So, I really don’t think nervousness is a good indicator.”
McCauley said the behavioral screening has been in place for a while, but most travelers have no idea it even exists.

Syracuse, New York Aug 1 2008

http://www.privateofficer.com/ - A security officer at Lincoln Park Pool was shot Wednesday night while working at the location, according to Syracuse police.
Omar Stroman, 34, of Bishop Avenue, was shot in the arm and shoulder.
According to witnesses, police said that at around 11:30 p.m., police were called and when officers arrived at the scene said they heard a man screaming near the pool and could see blood near the entrance.
When officers got inside, police say Stroman was floating on his back in the pool.Stroman told officers he never saw the shooter. Another employee said she heard the shot and saw Stroman running.
Police are trying to piece together what happened. Right now, it appears that there was no confrontation or any contact between Stroman and the shooter but that the shooter fired from a distance.
Police say the person who shot him may have used a shotgun or large caliber weapon.
Crime scene personnel were on the scene into the early morning hours and police say that the investigation is continuing.
The shooter faces attempted murder charges when apprehended.
The security officer is said to be in stable condition and should recover from his injuries.

Man charged with assaulting hospital security www.privateofficer.com

Man charged with assaulting hospital security http://www.privateofficer.com

NEW CASTLE, Del. Aug 1 2008 – Police say a man wanted for assaulting a Chrisitana Hospital security guard was arrested after he tried to give a false identity to police on Tuesday in New Castle, Del.
On Tuesday shortly after midnight, the New Castle County Police were sent to the area of South Street in Hamilton Park for the report of suspected drug activity.
According to Delaware State Police, when officers arrived on the scene they came into contact with Antwan Bonaparte, 22, of Nilsen Road in Bear. Police say Bonaparte provided officers with a false identity and explained he was not in the computer system because he had never been in trouble with law.
One officer said he then asked to use Bonaparte’s cell phone to call someone who would be able to confirm his identity.
According to authorities, it was a surprise to the officer when “Probation and Parole” came up as a contact in the cell phone directory with Bonaparte sticking to his story saying his real name was Antwan Robinson.
Bonaparte was detained and transported back to the New Castle County Police Department where his true identity was confirmed with fingerprints, police say.
According to authorities, it was then obvious that he was hiding his real name because he was wanted by the State Police in an incident in which he spat on, and assaulted, a Christiana Hospital constable in April of this year. In addition, he was also wanted on five outstanding warrants, according to police.
Bonaparte was charged with criminal impersonation and turned him over to Troop 6 for processing. Once at Troop 6, he was charged with offensive touching of a law enforcement officer, third-degree assaultand disorderly conduct. He was committed to the Howard Young Correctional Institute on $5,000 bond.

GA. town buys adult entertainment business www.privateofficer.com

GA. town buys adult business http://www.privateofficer.com

LAVONIA, Ga. Aug 1 2008
By: Rick McCann
Ntl. Assoc. Private Officers
http://www.privateofficer.com/ –A Georgia town decided that there was more than one way to get rid of an unwanted adult business even if that meant buying the business.
Club Risque was a little more true to its name than the residents of this small northeast Georgia town could take.
The town of Lavonia decided after numerous attemts to close it down using the court system failed, that it would shell out nearly $1 million Tuesday to buy and shut down the strip club along Interstate 85.
After the purchase, the city quickly burned the interstate signs advertising the club, which was popular with truckers.
Club Risque was opened in 2001 by Alachua, Fla., businessman Jerry Sullivan. The city went to court several times to close the club but was never successful.
Lavonia has since passed an ordinance outlawing adult entertainment businesses.
Sullivan died in his sleep in 2006 at age 47, but the club continued to operate under new ownership. The city was finally able to buy the club after negotiations.
There was no word on what the city will do with the property now.

Barbershop owner busted for selling drugs www.privateofficer.com

Barbershop owner busted for selling drugs http://www.privateofficer.com

LaVERGNE, Tenn. (Metro Nashville ) Aug. 1 2008
By: Rick McCann
Ntl. Assoc. Private Officers
http://www.privateofficer.com/ At some barbershops you can still get an old fashioned shave with your haircut and maybe a sprinkle of smell good powder or lotion. But at one middle Tennessee barbershop they had a few extras that they sold from a back room. A kind of side buisness that was illegal.
Customers coming to this business on Thursday found it closed down and police milling about after they raided the location for selling drugs.

Police said Arnold Horne Jr. was selling drugs from a back office at the Loose Endz barbershop.
LaVergne police said they got a tip about the drug activity and that they used an undercover informant to go in and buy illegal narcotics from Horne.
Horne was arrested at his home Thursday morning. Police said they found cocaine, cash and three handguns inside his residence.
Detectives said they made at least three cocaine buys from him inside his barbershop.
Authorities said they acted quickly because Tot’s Landing Day Care is just 60 yards away from the barbershop.
“At the time that we went there, 16 kids were playing outside of the day care in the playground. So, we definitely don’t want any of those kids or anybody else getting hurt,” said LaVergne Police Chief Ted Boyd.
Horne is already a convicted felon and is facing four more drug charges. He also has previous arrests on suspicion of aggravated assault.
Long-time customer Jay Kelley said the accusations are hard to believe.
“Shock. Shock. A good barber, a good family man, a good daddy, a good friend,” Kelley said.
Dr. Moses Swauncy’s family practice is a few steps away from the barbershop. He said he only knew Horne in passing.
“It’s very disturbing to know that something like this took place next door to my practice,” he said.
Because the alleged drug sales took place near a day care, police said they are hoping for more harsh punishment if he’s convicted.
Horne could face additional charges because as a convicted felon, he is not supposed to possess any handguns.
