Story by nbc5.com

CHICAGO IL Aug 9 2008
With accusations including sex while on duty, demands of free coffee, threats to cause bodily harm, perjury, bigamy, drug confiscation and peddling, four Chicago police officers were fired and two suspended in decisions released Thursday by the police board.
Officer Barbara Nevers of the Belmont police district was suspended for 15 months and ordered into counseling after she was found guilty of demanding free Starbucks coffee from five different stores on the North Side from 2001 to 2004, sometimes flashing her badge, displaying her gun and screaming at employees.
On Aug. 24, 2004, she flashed her badge to get free coffee at the Starbucks at 3358 N. Broadway, the board found.
Nevers exhibited similar behavior at Starbucks stores at 2525 1/2 N. Clark, 617 W. Diversey, 1700 W. Diversey Parkway and 1157 W. Wrightwood — sometimes demanding free coffee, yelling when they refused her demands and showing her weapon, the board found.
On July 12, 2004 at the store at 617 W. Diversey, she took a bottle of juice without paying, the civilian disciplinary panel found.
In June, five members of the police board voted for Nevers’ 15-month suspension and counseling. Two board members dissented, saying they would have imposed a stricter punishment, records show.
Sgt. Nicholas M. Ortega was fired after he was found guilty of entering a bar in uniform, giving a ride to an unauthorized person in his squad car and having sex with a woman in or near the sergeants’ office in the Grand-Central police district on the Northwest Side in 2005. Coincidentally, the bar he entered was called Grand Central Station in the 5700 block of West Grand, records show.
Officer Kevin Waters was fired after he was found guilty of threatening to slit a man’s throat in a bar in southwest suburban Merrionette Park, using a racial epithet and lying to Chicago Police Internal Affairs investigators.
Officer Cardinal Castillo was fired after he was found guilty of striking a woman in the face and leaving profane voice mails on her answering machine in 2004 and 2005.
Officer Robert E. Taylor Sr. was fired after he was found guilty of perjury before a judge in 2004. He was accused of being married to two women at the same time.
Officer Joseph Battaglia was suspended for more than 15 months after he was found guilty of telling Trotter’s to Go restaurant employees in 2004 that he had confiscated “weed”and asked if they wanted some.

Colerain Township police say a woman caught stealing from the Macy’s store at Northgate Mall ran over a security officer who was trying to stop her as she tried to get away.
Andy Demeropolis, of the Colerain Township police, said that one of the two security guards trying to stop the woman was on a bicycle.
“She continued to back up, then his bike got caught under the tire of the vehicle and he started screaming at her, “Please stop,’” said Demeropolis.
Demeropolis says she did not – and ran over both of his legs.
A number of people in the parking lot witnessed what happened and took down her license plate number. Many called 911 on their cellphones and police and emergency rescue personnel were immediately dispatched.
Police used the information from witnesses to track her to Lincoln Heights where she allegedly went inside a house there.
According to police, she refused to exit the ehouse and was hold up and refused all police commands so police had the SUV towed.
They also say that Macy’s had surveillance video of the woman.
In the meantime, they will gather enough evidence so that a judge can issue a warrant for her arrest.
Demeropolis says instead of facing a shoplifting charge, she now faces a felony robbery charge and felonious assault on the security officer.
The security officer was transported to an area hospital with leg injuries and is in stable condition.

Credit card scam thwarted by store security officers www.privateofficer.com

Credit card scam thwarted by store security officers http://www.privateofficer.com

Gainesville FLA Aug 9 2008
Gainesville Police uncovered a credit card scam Thursday evening that is not believed to have been used in the area before.
Officer Justin Poirot arrested a man who had apparently re-magnetized the back of a credit card. While the front of the car bore the man’s name, the strip on the back of the card had been embedded with someone else’s account information. The idea was that the man would be able to use the card to make purchases and someone else would get the bill.
The apparent scam was uncovered at the Archer Road Wal-Mart store around 9 p.m. when a man tried to pay for three video games totally $63.48 and get $60 cash back while checking out.
Wal-Mart security officers caught the man, who was identified as Donald William Scott, 22, of Pittsburgh. Scott was charged with retail theft, fraudulent use of a credit card and scheme to defraud and obtain property.
Following his arrest, Scott reportedly told Poirot how the scam was supposed to work. Poirot said Scott was able to re-magnetize credit cards with equipment he bought and that he got the account information from overseas. Scott also reportedly told the officer that he had altered more than one credit card and intended to use the cards to buy items at Wal Mart stores around the state.
When Scott was arrested, officers said they found a California identification card in his wallet with Scott’s picture on it, but bearing a fake name and birthdate. Scott’s explanation to officers was that he owns equipment to make fake identification cards and charges $50 to $100 per card.
Police are still looking for an alleged accomplice in the scam.

SEBRING FLA Aug 9 2008 – A Lake Placid man remains in Highlands County Jail in lieu of $100,750 bond, after Sebring police say he was caught shoplifting and then smacked a store loss-prevention agent in the head with a drill.
Andrew Joshua Velazquez, 19, of 109 Captivia Court, was charged with aggravated battery using a deadly weapon, petty theft and resisting recovery of merchandise by a retail merchant.
Velazquez would have been looking at a second-degree misdemeanor on the petty theft, but now additionally is facing a second-degree felony and a first-degree misdemeanor, said Sebring Police Lt. Bruce Crum on Friday.
On Thursday, Aug. 7, Velazquez reportedly was detained by Wal-Mart security for allegedly taking a pair of stereo headphones.
Police officer Chad Landry was called to the scene at about 6:42 p.m.
“Upon my arrival dispatch notified me loss-prevention officers were requesting immediate assistance, but could not advise why,” Landry wrote in his arrest report. “I proceeded to the loss-prevention office where I observed loss-prevention officer (name omitted by Highlands Today) holding down the suspect, identified later as Andrew Velazquez, in the doorway of the loss prevention office.”
Velazquez was lying on the floor on his back with the loss-prevention officer holding his hands against the ground. A large amount of blood was on the floor coming from the loss-prevention officer’s head.
The security officer turned Velazquez over and Landry handcuffed him.

The officer said he stopped Velazquez outside the store and walked him to the security office. Velazquez began to complain about stomach pain, but had been cooperative, so he allowed him to stand up, the report stated.
Out of the corner of his eye, the officer said he saw Velazquez swing something toward him, and turned his head to avoid the blow. It was then he tried to get away, but the officer grabbed the back of his shirt and pulled him to the ground.

Police charge teens with firebombing cars http://www.privateofficer.com

MILTON, Ga. (Atlanta Metro) Aug 9 2008
By: Rick McCann
Ntl. Assoc. Private Officers
http://www.privateofficer.com/ Police in this north Atlanta suburb had been investigating numerous cases of cars being firebombed and officers have announced that they have made arrests in these cases.
A Milton Police spokesperson said they have arrested three teens and charged them with 57 felony counts in connection with a recent series of car bombings with Molotov cocktails in the city of Milton, north of Atlanta.
The felony charges include arson, criminal damage to property and possession of explosive devices in six vehicle fires between 11 p.m. July 24 and 3 a.m. July 25.
Each teen is charged with 19 counts.
According to authorities, the teens — ages 15 and 16 — told authorities they learned “how to do it” from playing the video game “Grand Theft Auto.”
Channel 2 and wsbtv.com reported when three cars were firebombed in one North Fulton County neighborhood. The three cars, 2 Mercedes and a Honda, were all parked outside the owners’ homes within a half-mile of each other.
Two of the cars were in the Fairmont subdivision on Keyingham Way just off Highway 9.
Investigators said after the incidents, they went to a local Wal-Mart and pulled receipts. They found a receipt that contained the purchase of Sprite bottles, red rags and lighter fluid. Authorities said they then worked with loss prevention agents and pulled the surveillance tape from the time of the purchase and were able to identify the three teenagers.
The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms assisted with the investigation.
Because all three are minors, police have decided not to release their names at this time. Investigators also said that they are still continuing the investigation.

Shoplifter leads police on chase after assaulting security agent http://www.privateofficer.com

Winona PA Aug 9 2008
Winona police apprehended a man Tuesday suspected of shoplifting from Wal-Mart and assaulting an employee, after a weaving car chase and a manhunt through backyards that lasted more than two hours.
Andre Maurice Chamblis, 25, was taken into custody just before 11 a.m. and referred to the county attorney’s office for a slew of charges, including fleeing police in a motor vehicle, reckless driving and driving with a canceled license.
According to police reports: The incident began Monday when an employee at Wal-Mart reported someone stealing items and assaulting a security employee.
The responding officer received a description of the suspect, the green van he drove off in and a license plate.
At about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, that same officer saw the green Plymouth minivan with matching plates stopped at a stop sign at Second and Lafayette streets. The driver, later identified as Chamblis, matched the description given by Wal-Mart.
The officer activated his emergency lights and attempted to pull Chamblis over.Chamblis stopped briefly and then made an abrupt left turn onto Center Street, accelerating through a four-way stop.
The officer gave chase as Chamblis drove south on Center Street passing vehicles on the left at speeds estimated at between 50 and 55 mph. The officer fell behind Chamblis when he slowed for intersections and traffic to avoid wrecking.
Nearly two blocks away, Chamblis abandoned the van near King Street — hitting a parked car in the process — and fled the area on foot. The pursuing officer radioed a description of Chamblis, and most members of the police department dropped what they were doing to join the search through backyards and residences.
But they couldn’t find their suspect.Police received reports of Chamblis in the area of the Sugar Loaf Apartments at 358 E. Sarnia St. at 9:35 a.m. and 10:20 a.m. Both times, they were unable to locate him.
At 10:55 a.m., a patrol officer spotted Chamblis riding a bicycle near Fifth and Center streets and arrested him without incident. He denied being the driver. Chamblis was taken to the Winona County Jail, where he is awaiting formal charges and a first appearance in court.
Police are still investigating Chamblis’ alleged shoplifting at Wal-Mart and are waiting for video surveillance from the store.

Burglar leaves behind his cellphone www.privateofficer.com

Burglar leaves behind his cellphone http://www.privateofficer.com

ALPHARETTA, Ga.(Metro Atlanta) Aug 9 2008 Alpharetta police said Wednesday that a teen left his cell phone after breaking into a car — and that led them straight to the suspect.
Officials said they received several complaints of cars being broken into in the area of Harris Road and Rucker Road. Victims said their cars had been broken into and personal items were stolen
While investigating these complaints, one of the officers located a cell phone inside a vehicle that did not belong to the victim. The officer contacted a “contact” listed on the telephone and was given the name of the cell phone’s owner. Based upon this information officers were made aware the suspect name given was a person familiar to the agency for prior thefts.
“(The officer) went into the contact section in the phone, called somebody that was on that phone as a contact and said, ‘Hey, somebody’s lost this phone, who does it belong to?’ A name was given to the officer,” said George Gordon with the Alpharetta Police Department.
Officers went to the address they knew about on Wills Road and located the juvenile who owned the phone. The teen confessed to breaking into 18 automobiles in the area, according to officials. A search of the teenager’s house revealed numerous stolen items which were recovered, police said. Officers said they were given the names of two additional suspects who remain under investigation.
The juvenile suspect was placed under arrest and charged with the offense of entering automobile with numerous counts. The investigation continues.

Shoplifters use taxi to ferry them to crime scenes www.privateofficer.com

ANDERSON SC Aug 9 2008
By: Rick McCann
Ntl. Assoc. Private Officers
www.privateofficer.com Authorities in these parts have seen a lot of shoplifting capers and made a lot of arrests for thefts from merchants but this past week officers got another lesson in creative shoplifting 101.
It seems that an Anderson couple, who didn’t have wheels of their own, decided to employ a taxicab to help shuttle their stolen goods from place to place and now both are facing multiple counts of shoplifting in their scam that involves the use of the cab to pull of their theft spree.
Wednesday in Anderson Municipal Court, Christie Canada, 37, and Jason Canada, 35, pleaded guilty to one of three counts of shoplifting at the Anderson Target store.
The couple, operating out of an Anderson motel, admitted to stealing a car stereo, valued at $169.99, on July 19, but pleaded not guilty to shoplifting at the same store on June 23 and July 8. They were arrested Aug. 1 for suspicious behavior in the same store.
Judge Ken Mattison, who ordered $2,195 bonds for each Canada until a jury trial is held on Sept. 19, accepted their guilty plea to the third charge and ordered each to pay a fine of $1,092.50 or spend 30 days in jail.
According to the incident report, police were called to Target about 9:45 a.m. Friday after the Canadas were accused of removing a car stereo from its shelf. An empty box was found, and the stereo was found in a different area of the store, the report states.
Store security personnel notified police and told officers that the couple was seen earlier in a Yellow Cab, and they always requested the same driver, the report states.
Police arrested the couple in a nearby parking lot after they refused to ride in a cab that arrived with a different driver, the report states.
Both are still incarcerated pending their bond release or a court trial.

Copper thieves sell on the internet www.privateofficer.com

Copper thieves sell on the internet http://www.privateofficer.com

NASHVILLE, Tenn. Aug 9 2008
Kyle T. Greene
Ntl. Assoc. Private officers
It seems a new law to crack down on copper thefts in Tennessee isn’t putting thieves out of business as police hoped.
Last month a law went into effect that requires all metal dealers in Tennessee to not only register with the state, but sellers have to also leave a thumbprint and show photo identification.
In addition, companies no longer are allowed to buy from people with felony theft and burglary convictions.
As a result, police for a while saw a big drop in the number of people stealing air-condition coils and catalytic converters.
“We have people popping up, acting as middle men,” said Metro police Lt. Danny Driskell.
Dealers and some thieves are heading to Craigslist and other Web sites to do business. Search for “copper” on the site, and there are lists of people looking to buy and sell metals, offering cash on the spot for scraps.
However, part of the law requires that most dealers pay their customers by check or voucher.
Police said not only is what the thieves doing illegal, they are also hurting businesses that are following the law.
Authorities have busted several of the online dealers through undercover buys, but as more are popping up, they’ll be ready to put a dent in this dirty work.
“We’re going to arrest them, and prosecute them to the max of the law,” said Driskell.
Metro police said the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is working with them and other counties by setting up stings to bust the illegal dealers.

Collinsville police believe they will be able to solve more than 20 burglaries from one arrest.
Police were called early Wednesday to the Holiday Inn in Eastport, where security officers had spotted a man they said was breaking into a vehicle on the lot and were able to apprehend and detain him, according to a release from Collinsville police.
Police officers arrived and investigated and soon arrested Thomas M. Friese, 20, of Collinsville. According to police, subsequent investigation by officers led to the recovery of several items stolen in a rash of vehicle burglaries of the last two months and identification of at least two more suspects.
Police estimate they will clear more than 20 burglaries, according to the release.
Friese was charged Thursday with burglary but is expected to be charged with additional counts of felony burglary.
Madison County Circuit Judge Charles Romani set bail at $40,000 butFriese remains in custody at the Madison County Jail.
Police credit the security officers with making a good apprehension which has assisted them with many other felony cases.
