Security company still owed money by City of Omaha
Omaha NB Aug 12 2008
It’s been six weeks since the last pitch of the College World Series but some of the people hired to assure security are still waiting to be paid. City officials say Omaha was over-billed by the security firm.
During the CWS the security personnel walk around the stadium with authority but now they are trying to protect their credit.
Delta Security hasn’t paid approximately 50 of its security guards for their series duty because the company hasn’t been paid by the city. The city claims there are problems with the bill submitted by the company.
Security Guard Melissa Golden says, “We pay our taxes. We pay what we got to pay and they’re not paying us. That’s just not right.”
Parks Director Steve Scarpello says the city had been billed for several positions that it did not order prior to the series. The parks director also disputes Delta’s bill over the number of security guards posted outside Rosenblatt to prevent fence jumping.
But an owner and business manager for Delta Security says the series ran four days longer due to rain delays and city supervisors asked for coverage as the games went along.
Delta’s Dan Kaiser says, “They changed the rules after the series was over. Now they’re disputing they didn’t want people on these positions where they knew they were on those positions during the series and they asked for them.”
Money for stadium security comes from the College World Series, so security companies don’t bid. The city hires them and authorizes payment.
The parks director says it would have been irresponsible for the city to pay the invoice when it believed it was clearly over-billed.
Delta Guard Carrie Harris says, “How do you explain that to your mortgage company when you got to make your house payment or your car payment or your insurancepayment — you’re going to have to wait because I’m waiting on the city?”
The city has just cut a voucher to pay Delta Security $60,000 but denied $14,000 of the company’s bill.
Approximately 50 part-time security officers are expecting checks ranging from $200 to $3,500.
Delta Security says it plans to pay all guards in full and then sue the College World Series or the city for $14,000 plus $3,000 for a late fee.
The city plans to defend its stand.
