Police search for killer of bank security officer www.privateofficer.com
Police search for killer of bank security officer http://www.privateofficer.com
A police officer shot the man with a bean bag, and officers took him into custody.
More than 100 investigators, include police, FBI agents and other federal investigators, canvassed nearly 500 homes in the area of 24th and Oakley streets near Blue Valley Park over the course of two days.
They’re seeking clues in the shooting death of a security guard at a bank
Dwight Mayhugh, 71, was working at the UMB Bank at West 79th Street and Wornall Road in February 2006 when two masked gunmen forced him into the bank and demanded money.
The would-be robbers didn’t get any cash but shot Mayhugh before running off.
He died three days later.
Investigators believe the same people hit the same bank two weeks earlier, when they tried unsuccessfully to kidnap a teller. They stole the cars belonging to Mayhugh and the teller and dumped them in the neighborhood where the canvass is taking place.
Police decided to canvass because they recently received a new tip that they said led them to believe that someone in the area knows more than they are saying about the crime.

Dallas police officer arrested for “faking” robbery at Sam’s Club www.privateofficer.com
Dallas police officer charged with “faking” robbery at Sam’s Club http://www.privateofficer.com
http://www.privateofficer.com/
A Dallas police officer planned and carried out the late June robbery of a Red Bird-area Sam’s Club with two other men, according to court records obtained by The Dallas Morning News.
Officer Alph Coleman was working an off-duty security job at an area business when he said several men robbed the store and shot at him. Now investigators have found that story to be false and he arrested Tuesday evening for aggravated robbery. When investigators spoke to him Tuesday, he refused to answer questions about the June 27 robbery of the Sam’s Club in the 2900 block of West Wheatland Road.
Another man, who police say drove the getaway car, also was arrested and released Monday on $30,000 bail on one count of conspiracy to commit robbery and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. Police asked his name be withheld pending the arrest of a third suspect who is thought to be the gunman.
Police say that the robbery of the Sam’s and the officer being injured during an arrest of an “alledged” robbery suspect was all a planned robbery by at least three men including the officer.
Police said that they later found the getaway driver was behind the wheel of Officer Coleman’s civilian car. They also obtained cell phone records showing that Officer Coleman called the driver several times just before the gunman entered the store.
The suspicions of police investigators were immediately aroused after the robbery, in part because the unnamed gunman in the robbery didn’t take Officer Coleman’s weapon.
Initial police reports, interviews and an arrest warrant affidavit give the following account:
The gunman entered the store wearing all black, a black ski mask and blue latex gloves. He was armed with a revolver. He “ran towards Suspect Coleman with a gun in his hand, grabbed Suspect Coleman and seemingly overpowered him but did not disarm him.”
Officer Coleman told police that the man held a gun to his head and threatened to kill him. The gunman and Officer Coleman walked to the vault area and tried to enter it, but couldn’t because store employees barricaded the door.
The gunman then walked Officer Coleman back to the front of the store, out the door and to a parking lot near a grassy area. Officer Coleman told investigators that he “attempted to grab the gun of the unknown suspect. He stated they grappled over the gun and the unknown suspect shot at him twice,” according to the affidavit.
Officer Coleman also told investigators that the gunman shot him in his bulletproof vest. He also said he fired his gun three times at the man, who he said fled through an apartment complex.
Investigators quickly determined that Officer Coleman’s vest had not been hit by a bullet. They also were suspicious because the gunman never made an attempt to take any cash from the registers as he walked Officer Coleman through the store.
The witness who saw the two men outside also told police that the gunman did not fire his weapon as Officer Coleman had described, but that Officer Coleman had fired his a few seconds later. Video surveillance also showed that Officer Coleman did not fall where he had described falling.
During questioning, the man who police say drove the getaway car — convicted on a 1989 murder charge and later released — said Officer Coleman and the gunman had planned the robbery together.
Police officials said Officer Coleman, hired in 2004, had no prior disciplinary history.

Security guard held at gunpoint during robbery www.privateofficer.com
Security guard held at gunpoint during jewelry hiest at mall http://www.privateofficer.com
A group of armed robbers snatched jewelry from Stonebriar Centre in Frisco Tuesday morning in a daring daylight holdup shortly after the mall opened.
Four men wearing hats entered the shopping center at about 10:20 a.m. and ordered a security guard at Ben Bridge Jewelers onto the floor.
Witnesses said one man held her down, while the other three men used either a hammer or gun to smash display cases and steal merchandise.
“I thought I heard a shot. But people were saying they hit the glass with a hammer. It didn’t look like a hammer to me — it looked like a gun,” said Claudia Arriola.
“All the customers were running.”
The Frisco mall has a relatively low crime rate, but a similar robbery recently took place at the NorthPark Center in Dallas last month when a group stole more than $260,000 of watches. Police are not saying whether those two crimes are related.
The mall remains open. Police are still interviewing witnesses.
Anyone with information about Tuesday’s offense is asked to call the Frisco Police Department’s non-emergency number at 972-292-6010.

Security officer shot at NY nightclub www.privateofficer.com
Security officer shot at NY nightclub http://www.privateofficer.com
Clarkstown police said Curtis Robinson, 40, of Stamford, Conn., who works at the Liquid Ice nightclub, was struck by a bullet after he tried to break up a fight in the parking lot, which the club shares with other tenants of the strip mall, including the Diamond & Jewelry Exchange and Chuck E Cheese, a family restaurant.
Clarkstown police Detective Sgt. Bernard Cummings said Robinson was taken to Nyack Hospital, adding that his wound did not appear to be life-threatening.
The fight apparently started when two men, both about 20 years old, approached a 1986 Cadillac in the parking lot and attacked its driver, another man also about 20 years old, police said.
One of the men punched the driver through an open window while the other struck him with a bottle through the car’s sunroof.
The nightclub employees, including Robinson, pulled the two men away from the car in an attempt to stop the fight. The driver pulled out a handgun and fired once, striking Robinson, police said.
The two men who attacked the man in the Cadillac left the scene in a small gray car, possibly a Honda or Hyundai, police said.
The Cadillac was described as a blue Fleetwood with custom chrome wheels and had New York plates registered to a Spring Valley address, police said.
The Cadillac was last seen leaving the parking lot and traveling west on Route 59, police said.
Kari Vannostrand, 21, of Nanuet was surprised to hear about the incident.
“That’s highly unusual,” said Vannostrand, who works at Chuck E Cheese next door. “I’ve lived here all my life. It’s been safe. I’ve never had any problems.”
Vannostrand’s coworkers were also surprised to hear about the incident.
“Sometimes they open before we close, and nobody had a problem,” said Jennifer Horne, 21, another employee of the restaurant, which is geared toward families with young children.
In addition to Clarkstown police, Rockland County Paramedics and Nanuet Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded to the scene.
Anyone with information about the people or vehicles involved in the incident is asked to call the Clarkstown Police Detective Bureau at 845-639-5840.
Man holds wife, kids hostage in trailer for years www.privateofficer.com
Man holds wife, kids hostage in trailer for 3 yrs http://www.privateofficer.com
Officer Missy Collins with the Lavonia Police Department said Raymond Thurmond forced his wife and four children ages 14,13, 12, and 9, to stay inside their trailer, reported TV station WHNS in Greenville, S.C..
“The walls looked like they were moving sometimes. There were so many bugs and roaches on the wall,” said Collins. “When the door first opened roaches fell from the ceiling down to the floor. So, I knew then we were in for something.”
“There was garbage packed up to the ceiling. The smell was so overwhelming the investigator had to where a gas mask,” said Lavonia Police Chief Bruce Carlisle.
Carlisle said the smell was unbearable, even after cleanup crews made their way through the mobile home.
“It was probably the most disgusting scene that I’ve ever been involved in as far as human waste and filth, and the sad thing about it is you had a wife and four kids who were confined to these four walls and were not permitted to go outside,” said Carlisle.
Carlisle said the wife and children were never even allowed to look outside. He said the windows of the trailer were covered with paper and plastic. Carlisle said three of the children had also never set foot in a school. The oldest, a 14-year-old, only completed the second grade, police said.
“It was horrid. I mean horrid,” said Collins.
Collins said investigators believe medical attention went ignored for years. She said when officers found the children they were underweight with bones showing. Carlisle said they believe Thurmond kept them on a strict diet, feeding them just enough to stay alive.
“Chicken and chips was pretty much their diet. There was evidence of some other things in there like old pizza boxes. But from what I understand those were his and the kids and her were not allowed to partake,” said Carlisle.
Carlisle said they were led to the home by the man’s wife, who he believes was pushed over the edge one day and finally went for help.
“From what I understand, he just left and didn’t come back and she got word somehow. I don’t know what happened, but she got word somehow that he got involved with another lady,” said Carlisle.
Collins said the woman’s actions were a defining moment that brought light to a dark secret inside the trailer.
“Nobody in this community knew that he had children or a wife. That’s what’s so strange about this. This family was so afraid of this man that he said they are not to leave and they did not leave,” said Collins.
Neighbors said that they thought the person who lived next door to them was a normal, single man.
“He was nice,” said neighbor Jashaka Jackson. “He was always talking to my son and to my boyfriend. Just being normal like normal people do.”
Carlisle said Thurmond was arrested Tuesday when he showed up for work. He has been charged with rape, child abuse and false imprisonment.
He is awaiting a bond hearing and does not yet have an attorney

Shoplifting gang arrested in North Florida www.privateofficer.com
Shoplifting gang arrested in North Florida http://www.privateofficer.com
Four women running what appeared to be a shoplifting ring from Jacksonville were arrested at The Oaks Mall on Monday afternoon for allegedly shoplifting thousands of dollars worth of clothing and accessories.
Gainesville Police described the group as well-organized and experienced. Several hours after the women were arrested, police technicians were still counting the items that had reportedly been taken from at least seven stores, including some outside the mall.
Officer Scott Ferrel said the group’s activities were uncovered by “a great citizen who recognized the bags the women were using as something used for shoplifting.”
Known as booster bags, the oversized purses are often lined with materials to try to thwart the anti-theft devices at store entrances, said police spokeswoman Summer Hallett.
By Monday evening, police had determined the women rented a red Impala in Jacksonville, drove it to Gainesville and made multiple trips to the car from the mall to stash stolen merchandise in it.
“This seems to be more and more common – groups using booster bags to do a large amount of shoplifting,” Ferrel said. “It may be happening more now due to the economy.”
Ferrel, who is assigned to The Oaks Mall, said shoplifting rings used to be seen a few times a year, but recently they have been seen more than once a month.
Those arrested were each charged with one count of shoplifting by attempting to defeat an anti-shoplifting device. Ferrel said additional charges will be filed once the items taken have been inventoried. Those arrested were identified as Dorothy Pullins, 20, Letoria Matthews, 21, Cassandra Spence, 23, and Eldora Evans, 25, all of Jacksonville.
