Police responding to a call about a shoplifter fighting with security found a loss prevention agent and a male shoplifter in a hand to hand combat situation as they wrestled around on the ground.
Now police say that a Little Egg Harbor man has been charged with armed robbery and assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly brawling with that Kmart security officer who tried to stop him from shoplifting, police said.
Frank A. Hernandez, 20, of Wild Oaks Court, was subdued and taken into custody and then arrested Monday around 9:30 p.m. when officers arrived at the Route 72 business and found him rolling on the ground with a store security guard, police said.
During the altercation, which police said unfolded when the loss prevention agent went out and tried to detain Hernandez, he began to fight viciously and the security agent was injured and received cuts to his arms.
Authorities say that Hernandez tried to steal $71 worth of video games and clothes allegedly from the store.Hernandez was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for his use of what police deemed, “an unknown cutting instrument,” while fighting with the security agent. He also faces charges of armed robbery and resisting arrest.
He is being held at Ocean County Jail in Toms River in lieu of $50,000 bail.
The security officer’s injury did not require medical treatment, police said.
Also arrested at the scene were David Hinkley II, 20, of New Gretna and Joseph Kammler, 20, of Dorothy.
They were released from police custody pending a future court date after being charged with shoplifting.Patrolman John Morrin was the arresting officer.

Ministry feeds the hungry bread www.privateofficer.com

Ministry feeds the hungry with bread http://www.privateofficer.com

from Shelby County Reporter
CHELSEA AL Aug 14 2008 — Jesus Offers Ministries brings home the bread for hundreds of families in Shelby County and the surrounding areas.
Vicki and Ronnie Johnson run the project out of their garage, filling it with hundreds of bread loaves, pizza crusts, bags of bagels and rolls
The ones (beneficiaries of the ministry) that are really grateful will just humble you to your knees,” Vicki said.
“It means so much to me just seeing the people coming in and being able to offer them part of their family’s food for the next week.”
When Johnson saw that the ministry had become too much for her friend, she not only wanted to take it over but expand the project.
After posting messages on local Web sites like http://www.freecycle.com, more than 200 people began showing up every other week to grab a share of bread.
On average, Johnson said each person walks away with $15-$20 of bread.
“You don’t think about it being an expensive item until you have a large family,” Vicki said. “There are also a lot of people living on disability and a lot of people losing their jobs.”
She added that most people try and drop a dollar into the bucket or sometimes come a day early to help sort.
“With the word free, everyone thinks there’s a catch,” Johnson said. “But there’s not, we just ask people to only take what they need and offer in return what they can. We manage it with help from God above … He puts gas in the tank”
The ministry includes two women who take out food to people in communities who have no way to get to Chelsea. Those women currently deliver to 30 people in the Montevallo area and 40 in Pell City. The ministry currently needs someone to deliver to the Alabaster and Leeds areas.

Police capture man wanted for hospital thefts www.privateofficer.com

Police capture man wanted for hospital thefts http://www.privateofficer.com

AUSTIN, Texas Aug 14 2008 Austin police have captured a man they said is responsible for stealing purses and wallets from two local hospitals. High-tech surveillance video and a GPS tracking device helped catch the crook, who already was on parole for a burglary charge.
Surveillance video captured John Johnson, 48, stealing a wallet from an unattended purse at Dell Children’s Hospital in November 2007. Detectives did not know the man’s identity at the time, but they circulated an image from the video to local hospital security offices.
Just last month, security officers at University Medical Center at Brackenridge downtown arrested Johnson inside the hospital.
“When he was caught, he was basically doing the same thing at Brackenridge downtown,” said Austin Police Department Det. Matt Conley.
Johnson has a lengthy criminal history of convictions on theft and burglary charges. He is on parole from a 1982 charge of burglary with the intent to commit rape. Johnson had served 20 years of a 40-year sentence. His parole required him to carry a GPS tracking device.
“That helped place him at the scene of this theft plus the scene of a previous theft the month prior,” Conley said.
Detectives said the man is a suspect in several similar thefts at other hospitals and office buildings. They believe he was targeting hospitals and office buildings around Austin, where he would look for unattended purses and wallets. He could face additional charges.

Tempe Light Rail Will Use Private Security and Police www.privateofficer.com

Tempe Light Rail Will Use Private Security And Police http://www.privateofficer.com

TEMPE AZ Aug 14 2008
The first line of the Valley’s new light rail opens in a matter of months.
Tempe light rail security officials say they have put together a plan to police the lines that will include using private security officers, area law enforcement and K-9 units to keep the light rail safe.
Officiails said that Roger Austin, a former police officer, is now the city’s liaison for light rail security.
“We know on the very first day that we have to be doing a good job to keep ridership up and encourage people to use the rail system,” said Austin.
Austin explains that a private security company will handle security in the park and ride lots and will be on the trains for fare inspections and to be on the look out for problems.
Those security efforts will be backed up by police presence in the form of a K9 unit on each train and possibly undercover officers.
The city is taking bids from private security companies and training is expected to begin in October.
The 20-mile starter line will cross Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa. Austin says they will be working together to coordinate their security efforts.

About 8:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 5, police arrested two female juveniles on charges of shoplifting after the pair allegedly admitted to stealing several items of clothing from the Kohl’s department store at 5850 W. Arizona Pavilions Drive.
A store security officer saw the girls repeatedly enter a changing room with items that they apparently stuffed into large shoulder bags, according to a police report. The store worker stopped the girls and called police.
“Before (an officer) could even ask any questions, they both stated ‘It was a stupid thing to do,’” according to an officer’s report on the incident. The girls were arrested on shoplifting charges and released to their parents.
About 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8, police arrested a man for allegedly stealing a pair of $250 sunglasses from Costco, 3901 W. Costco Drive.
A store security guard stopped a man after watching him “select (the glasses) from a display shelf, use a knife to remove them from the packaging, and concealed them on his person,” according to an incident report.
The store worker told police the man was a “usual customer” who spends about $500 to $600 a week at the discount store. When questioned by police, the man admitted to stealing the glasses. Furthermore, “he stated he had the money to pay for them, but did not offer an explanation why he had stolen them,” according to a police report. An officer arrested the man and later released him.

GA. Choir Director Charged With Child Molestation http://www.privateofficer.com

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. Aug 14 2008 — A Clayton County church choir director is accused of molesting children. Investigators believe he picked his prey from his own congregation.
Clayton County authorities said they found pictures of the choir director naked with several children. They believe some victims are from Saint Philip Benizi Catholic Church in Jonesboro where he works.
Rafael Garcia, 40, was arrested after officials said they found pornographic images on Garcia’s camera.
The mother of a 6-year-old boy didn’t mince words when she talked about what Garcia is accused of doing to her child.
VIDEO: Clayton County Church Choir Director Accused Of Child Molestation
“I wanted to kill him,” said “Sandy,” an alleged victim’s mother.
Police said Garcia, who rented a room at Sandy and her husband’s home, molested the child in the room and took pictures of the boy and himself engaged in pornographic acts.
“It just was not anything that we ever really suspected or had any idea that this could have been something to happen to us,” Sandy said.
Garcia was the child’s babysitter and the family said they trusted him because he was the choir director at the church.
Police said they found pornographic pictures of other children and they suspect Garcia may have harmed children at the church.
“Please call us if there is any indication that Mr. Garcia has had contact with their children in this manner,” said Sonja Sanchez with the Clayton County Police Department.
“It kills me because it was somebody that my son trusted and felt was a friend. And we trusted him,” said Sandy.
Garcia has been charged with five felony counts of sexual battery, five felony counts of enticing a child for indecent purposes, five felony counts of child molestation and five felony counts of sexual exploitation of children.
He is being held in the Clayton County Jail without bond.

Authorities say a keen eye of a lone officer on patrol on Redfern Avenue early Wednesday afternoon may have prevented a homicide when the officer spotted three men carrying a handcuffed man into a vacant house, where another man waited inside. In a basement room officers discovered a chair and a loaded gun.
Officer Michael Baker was patrolling the Five Oaks neighborhood about 12:15 p.m. Wednesday when he spotted the men. When the men saw Baker, they dropped their prisoner and ran, said Lt. John Huber.
Baker radioed for back up officers and they soon found a room set off in the basement of the house. In the room was a lone chair and a machine pistol with a bullet in the chamber.
A fourth suspect was spotted running from the house and officers gave chase by said that man got way even though Officer Charles Hurley shot him with a stun gun.
“Whatever was going to happen in there wasn’t going to be good,” Huber said.
He added that Baker probably saved the handcuffed man’s life.
The handcuffed man had minor head injuries and looked as if he had been pistol-whipped, Huber said.
Police are still investigating this incident and searching for the men who got away.

Federal agents arrest 42 at Dulles Airport http://www.privateofficer.com

On Wednesday, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested 42 men believed to be illegally present in the country at Dulles International Airport as part of a critical infrastructure protection operation.
ICE agents, with support of airport security agencies, arrested the illegal aliens just inside the airport grounds at a checkpoint established to verify the identity and immigration status of workers entering a service gate.
During a similar operation in June 2006, 55 illegal aliens working on airport construction were arrested.
“It is crucial to ICE’s homeland security mission to know who enters sensitive areas like airports, military bases and power plants to ensure the integrity of these key assets,” said Mark X. McGraw, special agent in charge of ICE’s Office of Investigations, Washington field office. “This operation illustrates ICE’s ongoing efforts in partnership with federal and local agencies to secure the critical infrastructure within the National Capital Region.”
ICE agents interviewed more than 200 individuals to verify their identities, immigration status and eligibility for lawful employment in the U.S. Most of the individuals encountered worked on construction projects at the airport.
Those detained are being interviewed, fingerprinted, photographed and entered into Department of Homeland Security databases at a local ICE office. Relatives and friends wishing to check on the custody status and detention location of those detained may call 866-341-3858 ICE’s toll-free, 24-hour hotline.
According to ICE officials, interviews can often generate critical law enforcement information that may lead to future investigations. There is no indication that any of the aliens were involved in any terrorist activity.
ICE agents prioritize enforcement efforts by focusing on the sites related to critical infrastructure and national security. The goal of such operations is to reduce the vulnerabilities at these facilities and other key assets to prevent potential attacks, according to ICE.
Unauthorized workers employed at sensitive facilities like airports, nuclear power plants, chemical plants, military bases, defense facilities and seaports, may compromise the integrity of these key assets, the agency says. In fiscal 2008, ICE agents have made more than 700 administrative arrests and 100 criminal arrests at critical infrastructure facilities.
The Transportation Security Administration and the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority supported the operation.
