Body of abducted store clerk found http://www.privateofficer.com

DALLAS TX Aug 18 2008 - A body found in a remote area was been identified as the clerk whose abduction from a store in a small North Texas town was recorded by security cameras, authorities said Sunday
Mindy Daffern, 46, had been missing since Friday from the store her family owns in the city of Scotland, 130 miles northwest of Dallas. Surveillance camera videotape showed her being confronted at gunpoint by an unmasked man who walked her outside the store.
A man suspected in the abduction led investigators to the body Saturday and Texas Rangers confirmed it was Daffern, Archer County Sheriff Ed Daniels said Sunday.
Wallace Bowman Jr., 30, of Bowie, was being held on charges of aggravated robbery and kidnapping and Daniels said he is expected to be charged with capital murder. His bail was set at $3 million.
Bowman did not yet have an attorney to speak for him, Daniels said.
Daffern’s body was found in a remote area near the town of Sunset in neighboring Montague County. Investigators were awaiting on an autopsy report, Daniels said.
“She was just a down to earth, good person,” he said. They’re a very close-knit family and of course it’s just completely devastated the family.”
Video from one store camera showed a man casually walking into the store and handing Daffern a cup, then pulling out a handgun and pointing it at her face.
A second camera showed the gunman walking her out of the store. Daffern was seen handing the cup back to the map, who sipped from it while holding the gun on her with his other hand. Daffern had her hands up and appeared to plead with the man. Video from a third camera showed a sport utility vehicle leaving store parking lot.
On the video, the gunman showed no apparent concern about appearing on camera and his face was clearly visible.
“I’m not sure he realized those were cameras, I don’t know,” Daniels said. “I haven’t talked to him, I don’t know what he was thinking at that point.”
Bowie police began searching for Bowman after recognizing him on the video. On Saturday, police found an SUV matching the vehicle on the video at a motel about 40 miles away, Daniels said.
Authorities found Bowman at the motel Saturday morning. He was unarmed and the weapon used in the crime has not been found, Daniels said.
He initially told authorities he’d let Daffern out of the vehicle at a rural road in Archer County and that she’d run across a field, the sheriff said. “There was nothing in that field to indicate she’d ever been there,” Daniels said.
Court records show Bowman was sentenced in 1997 to seven years for aggravated sexual assault and failed to register as a sex offender in 2004. Bowman was placed on probation after being convicted for burglary in 1996, according to court records.

Federal Custom Agent Charged In Death www.privateofficer.com

Federal Customs Agent Charged In Death Case http://www.privateofficer.com

Queens NY Aug 18 2008
A Federal Customs agent has been indicted in the mysterious shooting death of a friend in his Queens home.
Eric Alke, an Immigrations and Customs Enforcement agent assigned to Kennedy Airport, was ordered held on $75,000 bail Friday on charges of manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide in the June 26 incident.
Alke initially told police that victim Adrian Moldovan, 50, was visiting his Forest Hills apartment about 3:30 p.m. after the pair had been out drinking.
Alke claimed Moldovan snatched his off-duty .38-caliber Smith & Wesson from the kitchen table and fatally shot himself once in the chest.
But Alke’s lawyer said Friday the shooting happened in the apartment vestibule, on a set of stairs. Alke left the weapon on a stairway ledge, then heard a shot after he’d turned his back on the gun and his friend, said lawyer Gerard Marrone.
“We’re not saying it was a suicide,” Marrone said. “It was just a very, very unfortunate accident.”
Alke is due back in court Sept. 3.

Police capture man wanted for jewlery robbery www.privateofficer.com

Police capture man wanted for jewelry robbery http://www.privateofficer.com

Mesa AZ Aug 18 2008
Mesa police caught up with two men accused of running off with more than $16,000 in jewelry from a Mesa Kmart earlier this month.
On August 4th, the men allegedly cut the security wire securing a rotating case to the jewelry counter at a Kmart near Broadway and Dobson roads, according to court documents obtained Friday. They put the case in a shopping cart then fled to a vehicle waiting in the parking lot. The jewelry was worth $16,403.34, according to the documents.
Two days later, police got an anonymous tip that Ruben Ruiz was the thief and in a photo lineup, a witness identified Ruiz as the person who stole the jewelry case.
Detectives learned that the jewelry had been left at a friend’s house where they found several sets of earrings that were identified by Kmart as part of the stolen jewelry. The jewelry recovered was worth $1,549. Ruiz, 32, was arrested and charged with third degree theft. The second man under arrest is Dennis Kirk, 36.
Detectives got word that Kirk was the driver of the getaway car, a white Honda with heavy front-end damage. When they went to contact Kirk at a Chandler home, detectives saw a white Honda with heavy front-end damage leaving the home. Officers were able to stop the driver after following it for some time and he told police he was Dennis Kirk.
He was taken into custody for a warrant and having a revoked driver’s license. While sitting in the back of the patrol car, officers saw Kirk spitting and when they investigated found several small rock-like objects on the floor of the car.
They appeared to be rock cocaine, according to the court documents. Kirk had torn a microbag in his hand and glass-like shards were found under the seat. They were reported to appear to be methamphetamine. The items were field-tested and tested positive for cocaine base and meth. A syringe was found when officers searched the white Honda, according to the documents.
Kirk was also charged with third degree theft in the Kmart jewelry robbery.
According to a police spokeswoman, all the jewelry was recovered.
