Police said John W. Havens III was in the Sears department store in the mall around 2:45 p.m. when loss prevention agents observed him through video surveillance acting suspiciously. Police said Havens had his hand in his pocket and ap peared to be masturbating.
According to police, security agents closely followed Havens as he proceeded through the store, reportedly following several women around and allegedly rubbing up against a 45-year-old woman.
At this point security agents approached Havens and determined he was a threat to safety and took him into custody.
Township police were called and found Havens being held in the security office. After reviewing the video and conducting interviews, police charged him with criminal sexual contact and took him into custody.
Havens was later released on a summons and given a date to appear in court.

Bank customers robbed by men in security guard uniforms www.privateofficer.com

Bank customers robbed by men in security guard uniforms http://www.privateofficer.com

TIGARD OR Aug 19 2008
By: Rick McCann
Ntl. Assoc. Private Officers
www.privateofficer.com – Police are calling it a new scam that unfortunately worked well at an area bank.
Police said that two men dressed as security guards and stood outside a bank during the night telling people that the overnight deposit slot was out of order. They then pursuaded an unknown number of customers to hand over their deposits and made off with hundreds of dollars in cash last Friday according to police.
The men offered to make the deposits for customers at the Washington Square branch of Wells Fargo bank the next day when the bank reopened, said a Tigard Police spokesman, Jim Wolf.
But “Wells Fargo had absolutely no idea who these men were,” Wolf said.
He said the men wore uniforms and had badges and guns. The night deposit slot was covered by a blue engraved sign saying it was out of order.
It all looked real, Wolf said.
Police are questioning how they were able to pull off their caper without someone becoming suspicous or notifying the police.
“What can someone expect at this point?” Wolfe asked. “In this case, it was very official-looking, both the appearance of the suspects and how they orchestrated the collection.”
“Obviously, it appears that this was thought out,” he said. “It was planned.”
The thefts happened about 10 p.m. Friday at the Wells Fargo branch at 9200 S.W. Washington Square Road, Wolf said.
Wolf said police learned of the situation the next day, when a business contacted the branch to ask about a deposit made the night before.
Wolf said the men were described as being 30 to 40 years old, with medium builds. Both were wearing blue uniforms and had guns, security badges and identification cards.
The “guards” offered to collect the deposits by putting them in a black box they had, Wolf said. He said the deposits came from businesses that normally use the slot to deposit the day’s receipts from their tills.
Two people who gave deposits to the men said the sign over the slot read “Out of Service.” Wolf said he was not sure how a hole in the wall might be out of service.
Tigard police are checking to see if bank cameras picked up any images of the suspects or their vehicles and are asking that anyone who may have seen the men near the bank call 503-639-6168.
“In this case, it appears they’ve either done this before or may have the intention of doing it again,” Wolf said.

NYPD officers arrested after road rage assault www.privateofficer.com

NYPD officers arrested after road rage assault http://www.privateofficer.com

Bronx NY Aug 19 2008
By: Bryan Hill

http://www.privateofficer.com/
Two female NYPD cops are in deep trouble after they did some serious damage to a Bronx man early Friday night, allegedly pistol whipping him during a road rage incident. Michelle Anglin, 37, and Koleen Robinson, 24, were off-duty when they became enraged at 35-year-old Marlon Smith for leaving the driver’s door of his Suburban open, almost scraping Robinson’s SUV, the Daily News reports. Both officers began a barage of foul language toward Anglin using the F word dozens of times according to witnesses.
When he responded with his own profanity, the policewomen jumped from their vehicle and approached his vehicle and Anglin allegedly blasted him with pepper spray.
A witness who tried to break up the brawl reportedly heard the women yell, “Do you know who you are f—— with? We are the police!”
Apparently, Smith didn’t get the message fast enough, and tried to grab one of the cops, who retaliated with baton cracks to the skull and a pistol-whip to the face. Witnesses say that the assault on the driver continued until some uniformed officers arrived and arrested Anglin and Robinson.
NYPD authoritiess ay that both officers were suspended, stripped of their guns and arraigned Sunday on gang assault charges.
Smith is recovering from the incident with 25 staples holding together the three gashes in his skull. He tells the Post, “I’m not feeling so well right now,” with headeaches and blurred vision. Smith also claims that Internal Affairs warned him “to keep his mouth shut.” Maybe he should just be grateful that beat cops haven’t (yet) been issued submachine guns like in New Jersey.
The reports did not say if the were under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the attack or if either had ever been disciplined for similar or other incidents were employed with the NYPD.

A La Marque man is recovering after police say his cousin bit off and swallowed his ear. La Marque Police Sgt. Waggoner says the two men had an argument early over the weekend that turned physical.
Authorities say that they were called round 3 a.m. Sunday, and police responded to a 911 call from from a man with a severed ear.
According to police, Sandford and his cousin, Ryan Bedard, got into a fight during which Bedard bit his Sandford’s ear.
Their family says after Bedard bit down, he ripped the ear off his cousin’s head.
Fire and EMS as well as police were dispatched and discovered that Sanford’s ear had been totally severed.
Family members say the men grew up together and have a strong relationship which somehow turned bloody over the weekend. According to family, the pair went out parting on Saturday night with Bedard’s girlfriend.
On the way back home Sandford reportedly tried to stop an argument between the suspect and his girl friend.Sandford was taken to University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. According to his family it does not look like doctors will be able to reattach the ear.
Bedard has been charged with aggravated assault. His bond is set at $80,000.

Pilot threatens to kill self over Roanoke VA. www.privateofficer.com

Pilot threatens to kill self over Roanoke VA. http://www.privateofficer.com

from The Roanoke Times
Roanoke VA. Aug 19 2008
A licensed pilot and retired air traffic controller prompted evacuations in parts of two localities Monday after he took off from Roanoke Regional Airport without authorization and threatened to kill himself by crashing into Smith Mountain Lake, Franklin County officials said.
The white, single-engine Cessna 172 flew over parts of Roanoke, Franklin County, Bedford County and Botetourt County, and was seen at various points around the lake. It sparked a flurry of security precautions before landing safely back at the airport after nearly four hours.
Franklin County officials identified the pilot as Samuel Shields, 50, of Blue Ridge.
He was taken into custody shortly after he landed and was later taken for a medical assessment, Roanoke police spokeswoman Aisha Johnson said in a news release. She did not specify where he was taken.
Shields has not been charged.
The incident has prompted the Federal Aviation Administration to conduct an administrative review of flight protocol, Johnson said.
The plane took off from the airport about 10:50 a.m. without notifying air traffic controllers, said Sherry Wallace, a spokeswoman for the airport.
Initially, authorities did not know where the plane was because the pilot was not responding to air traffic controllers’ requests for communication and the aircraft was not appearing on radar, Wallace said. Private planes can fly at 200 feet, which puts them below radar, she said. She did not know at what altitude the plane was flying.
Federal, state and local law enforcement officials and fire and rescue crews from several localities set up command posts and worked together throughout the day to keep track of the plane and notify people who may have been in danger.
Residents in the Blue Ridge neighborhood where Shields lives said Botetourt County sheriff’s deputies went door-to-door about 2 p.m. and told them to consider leaving.
“They said the person was suicidal and was considering crashing their plane in Blue Ridge,” said Tina Spicuzza, who lives next door to Shields.
Soon after, Karen Hargrove said her family heard a small plane go over the neighborhood and then a state police helicopter broadcasting a message to evacuate and sounding an emergency air horn.
At about the same time, an estimated 300 people were being urged to evacuate from Bridgewater Plaza in Franklin County, said Sheriff Ewell Hunt.
The plane had been seen flying over the shopping center, and the sheriff’s office was taking precautions because of the number of people there, Hunt said.
State police Sgt. Rob Carpentieri said he was at a wreck on Interstate 81 in Botetourt County at mile marker 150 when he saw the plane flying low and circling the area. A state police helicopter was following the plane at a distance, he said.
“It puts you on edge a little bit,” Carpentieri said.
The news release from Roanoke police said the pilot never indicated that any specific person or facility was a target.
Hunt, though, said that the man’s family told officials that he had threatened to crash it in the lake.
At some point, the airport tower was able to make contact with the pilot, who revealed that he might be suicidal, the news release said.
Later, FBI agents were able to talk him into landing the plane safely. It touched down at the airport at 2:46 p.m., Wallace said.
After landing, Shields tried to run from the plane but was caught by FBI agents who took him into custody to interview him, Hunt said.
Shields’ family could not be reached at their home or by phone.
Shields is a licensed pilot and flight instructor, according to online FAA records.
Pilot Jeff Hoprich described Shields as an experienced airman who belonged to the aviation community at Roanoke’s airport.
Shields retired as an air traffic controller in the Roanoke tower within roughly the past year and kept his plane at the Roanoke airport, Hoprich said.
According to online records, the plane is registered to DSI LLC, a business that rents and leases equipment. Shields is listed as the company’s registered agent.
Hoprich has known Shields for seven or eight years and said the reports given by authorities don’t sound like anything Shields would do.
“Something has happened because this isn’t him,” Hoprich said. “Obviously, there’s something very out of the ordinary going on here that we’re not aware of.”

Police capture man wanted for kidnapping domestic violence worker www.privateofficer.com

Police capture man wanted for kidnapping domestic violence worker http://www.privateofficer.com

SMYRNA, Tenn. Aug 19 2008
By: Rick McCann
Ntl. Assoc. Private Officers
http://www.privateofficer.com/ Police were able to quickly track down the man they say kidnapped a domestic violence worker and caused a lockdown at a local school and take him into custody without further problems.
Police in Murfreesboro, a city southeast of Nashville say that the man who caused Smyrna High School to be locked down was caught in Memphis late Monday night.
William Dorris Irwin was captured after Rutherford County’s Fugitive Squad tracked him to Memphis.
Police say that it all started Monday morning when he is accused of kidnapping a woman in Murfreesboro and then threatening to kidnap his son from Smyrna high school
Irwin’s wife, who has an order of protection against him, was in the parking lot of the Murfreesboro Domestic Violence Center on Monday talking to a counselor when police said Irwin suddenly showed up.
According to police, Irwin then took the domestic violence worker and dropped her off at a Citgo gas station in Smyrna, but not before telling the worker he was going to kidnap his 16-year-old son from Smyrna High School.
The worker immediately called police, prompting the high school not to allow anyone in or out of the building.
“There was no imminent danger on campus this morning. There was no one that actually ever entered the campus with any sort of guns. This was completely off-campus and they (executed a lockdown) as a way of keeping the campus secure,” said James Evans, spokesman for Rutherford County schools.
School was let out at its normal time on Monday.
Police from several agencies and federal agents began searching the metro Nashville area for Irwin and deemed him to be a serious risk to public safety an officer said.
Investigators found him at undisclosed location in Shelby County Tennessee.
Irwin was arrested three times in July and August on charges of assaulting his wife and armed robbery.
Irwin’s son and the boy’s mother are together and both are currently in a safe location according to area authorities.
Authorities say that he has been brought back to Rutherford County where he faces numerous felonies including kidnapping. He is currently being held in the county detention center without bond.
This is the second lockdown of a Rutherford Country school on Monday. Eagleville School was placed on lockdown status after an armed man robbed a Regions Bank in downtown Eagleville early Monday morning.

66 Arrested In Operation Rebate & Switch www.privateofficer.com

66 Arrested In Operation Rebate & Switch http://www.privateofficer.com

Chicago IL Aug 19 2008

They thought they were going to be getting tax rebates. Instead they got a trip to jail.
That was the end result of a three-week sting operation by Cook County sheriffs that nabbed 66 fugitives wanted for crimes including domestic battery, aggravated robbery, driving under the influence, back child support and other charges.
In what was dubbed Operation Rebate & Switch, officers set up the fictional Tax Recovery Experts Inc. store front office on South Archer Avenue and lured the fugitives to the site with letters promising to help them get their first rebate or supplemental check. Those who got the letters were instructed to call the Southwest Side office to set up an appointment.
The letters were sent to roughly 5,000 fugitives, Cook County Sheriff Thomas Dart said Sunday, announcing the arrests. About 100 fugitives responded, and 32 showed up at the office, where an undercover agent, posing as a receptionist, asked them to present identification. The fugitives were then individually escorted to a back office, where they thought an agent was waiting to discuss their cases. Instead, they were handcuffed by police and ushered out a back door where a waiting van took them to jail.
“We sort of honed in on people’s prevailing motivator at times, which is greed,” said Dart.
One fugitive drove in from Michigan, he noted. Thirty-four offenders were arrested after they called in to make appointments, but failed to show up in a second phase of the operation in which officers fanned out across Cook County to make arrests at various offenders’ homes.
The sting cost roughly $8,000, much of which was made up by the more than $6,000 in towing fees received when the fugitives’ cars were impounded, Dart said. The manpower to arrest the fugitives by more traditional means would have cost 10 to 20 times more, he estimated.
Don Morrison, chief of the electronic monitoring fugitive unit, said the sting evolved after a chance conversation he had with his dad about his tax rebate check. Working with a team that included the Sheriff’s Fugitive Warrants Division, the Child Support Enforcement Division, Department of Women’s Justice, Department of Community Supervision and Intervention; the sting was put together.
“It was in the newspapers and on TV all the time about the stimulus checks, and it just hit us one day,” Morrison said of the idea. “We hashed it over for a couple of weeks and then we started working on it.”

West Virginia Security Officer Recognized For Smiling Ways www.privateofficer.com

West Virginia Security Officer Recognized For Smiling Ways http://www.privateofficer.com

FAIRLEA WV AUG 19 2008— “Come right in, hon,” is the greeting folks get from Saundra Simms when they come through the main gate at the State Fair of West Virginia.Simms, a guard for Securitas, the security company for the fair, is cut out for her position.
“She’s very funny and she gives you a lift. She’s always smiling and she likes to joke and have fun,” Jim Pack of Dawson said.
“I’m a friendly person and I like my job,” says Simms, who works eight-hour shifts at varied positions on the fairgrounds.“I lost my husband and I decided to try the security (position) at the State Fair and I love it,” she says with enthusiasm.
Simms has experienced only a few minor problems at the entrance gate.
Most of the problems have revolved around parking, she said.“I just tell them the rules, laugh and give them a big smile,” she said.
Simms interrupted the interview several times to welcome fair folks.
“I’m so glad to see you back,” she said to a woman in a wheelchair.“Have a nice (carnival) ride,” was the greeting she gave to a young girl.Former owner of a fast-food business and a construction and computer business in Greenbrier County, Simms decided to seek a job at the State Fair following her husband’s death.
“I take seniors to dances and to senior centers in Alderson and Lindside,” she said of her activities.
According to Simms, her parents, Mabel Bennett and the late Robert Bennett, taught her the importance of volunteerism.“My mom and dad took care of all the elderly people in the community,” she recalls.
“I’m a Fayette County girl,” says Simms, who was one of seven children. She grew up in Danese and graduated from Nuttall High School.“I’ve lived in Greenbrier County for 40 years,” she says.Simms has three children, Melissa Swann, Cindy Meadows and Curtis Simms.“I taught them good manners and good morals and to treat other people like they would want to be treated,” she said. And Simms practices what she preaches.
“Thank you, hon,” Simms said to a motorist who handed her his gate ticket to be stamped.Simms’ sense of humor is contagious.“Some of them (the people) called me a duck when it rained because I had my yellow jacket on,” she said.“Standing on my feet,” the outgoing Simms said when queried about the downside of her position.
“But it’s worth it because I meet so many nice people.”

The suspects who deputies say were attempting to steal cargo from the location had caught the security guard off guard as they stormed the business, Wenger said.

Authorities say that they were able to apprehend one suspect and he was taken into custody at the scene, but the three others remained at large and were believed to be armed, he said.

NY Hospital security officer beat up by FDNY EMTs www.privateofficer.com

NY Hospital security officer beat up by FDNY EMTs http://www.privateofficer.com

from Nydailynews
Bronx NY Aug 19 2008

A Bronx hospital security officer claimed he was worked over twice – first by two irate FDNY medics who beat him and then by his boss, who threatened to fire him.
Riza Sever, 28, was working the night shift at Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx on Thursday night when two FDNY EMTs came in with a patient on a stretcher.
Sever said he and EMT John Rugen got into a shouting match about who was allowed in the emergency room.
Sever said the situation turned ugly when Rugen cursed him out and shoved him.
Rugen’s partner, EMT Jay Yim, soon got into the fray, and started hitting him, Sever said.
“I thought he was running to break it up,” Sever said. “He hits me in a rapid succession, three or four times. I flew out of the double door of the ER.”
Another Bronx FDNY medic rushed over to break up the fight, he said.
Fellow hospital security officers arrested both EMTs, but Sever’s supervisor voided the arrests and threaten to fire Sever if he filed a complaint against the two.
“They told me, ‘How do we know you did not start the fight?’” Sever said.
“I was just doing my job.”
Sever said FDNY brass grabbed all of the security video.
“I would not expect anyone in uniform who also works for the city to treat me like this,” he said.
A hospital spokeswoman called the matter a “misunderstanding” and said the incident was under review.
An FDNY spokesman said the two EMTs were not arrested, but declined to further comment.
FDNY sources said the incident was handled at the hospital that night.
Sever filed a police report yesterday at the 40th Precinct stationhouse in the Bronx.
About 15 fellow hospital officers went with Sever for support – since they said they got none from their administrators or their union.
“It’s like we are furniture to them,” said hospital officer Maxie James, 30. “They can replace us and that’s it.”

SEATTLE WA Aug 19 2008
Bryan Hill
Ntl. Assoc. Private Officers
http://www.privateofficer.com/ – The teen wanted for the murder of a man shot after a football practice in Federal Way last week was arrested and charged Monday with second-degree murder.
Federal Way Police say 16-year-old Luis F. Cosgaya-Alvarez of Kent was taken into custody in South Seattle.
The shooting happened just 8 p.m. as practice was ending for the Federal Way Hawks, a junior league football team. A crowd of parents and players were leaving at the time.

That’s when police say a black SUV pulled up and someone shot 26-year-old Ormero Garcia Mendez in the head.
Witnesses say they had seen the SUV before circling the lot as if the driver was in search of someone.
According to friends, the Mendez was there to pick up another friend’s child. He had come to the field every night.
Police who actively pursued the case say that they don’t believe the shooting was gang related.
Alvarez remains in custody at the county detention center.
