Perkins Rowe LA. Sept 3 2008
Thanks to an aggressive store manager, an accused shoplifter faces felony theft charges this evening. It’s unconnected with a similar case we reported Wednesday. This alleged criminal has some expensive taste. Deputies say a woman was caught on camera stealing a designer purse from the store Kiki in Perkins Rowe. As WAFB’s Caroline Moses reports, the store manager got crafty to find the culprit.
Kiki store manager Cammy Lowe says a few weeks ago, a customer slipped something out of her sight. At first, she didn’t notice, but store surveillance cameras caught everything.
“Two women walked in,” Lowe says, “I greeted them, friendly, dressed well, nice people and they just walked around for a minute and stole a handbag.”
Lowe says you can see the younger woman in the video put a purse exactly like a $320 Marc Jacobs bag into her bag, then leave the store. Lowe was supposed to be on guard, so she says she was determined to find the thief.
Lowe set up a Facebook page, with store surveillance video and still photos of the alleged shoplifter. 124 people joined her group, to help solve the crime. Together Lowe says they found who they were looking for.
Deputies say 24-year-old Stephanie De Chavez Ruiz of Baton Rouge is the woman seen stealing in the surveillance video. She’s charged with felony theft. Her mother, seen with her in the video, was not charged in the crime.
So far this year, Deputies say there have been eight shoplifting complaints from stores inside Perkins Rowe. Kiki’s manager Cammy Lowe says if people try to shoplift again at her store, she’ll be just as creative — Trying to catch them too.
