Hospital security officer shot to death www.privateofficer.com

Hospital security officer shot to death http://www.privateofficer.com

PORTLAND, Maine Sept 7 2008 – A 27-year-old security guard at Mercy Hospital was fatally shot early Sunday while outdoors on his break, police said.
After hearing gunshots, hospital employees found James Angelo wounded in a fenced-in hospital parking lot. He was treated in Mercy’s emergency room before being transferred to Maine Medical Center, where he died, police said.
Witnesses told police that two people walking along Winter Street “had some kind of engagement with the victim” and fled in opposite directions after shots were fired around 4 a.m., Chief Joseph Loughlin said.
Police said one of the two was described as a short, black man in his early 20s with a slight build, short black hair and apparently clean shaven, wearing black pants and a white hooded sweatshirt with a design or print. The other person was described only as wearing a light-colored shirt or jacket.
Angelo and his family had arrived in Portland from the Sudan in 1995. “It’s a good family,” said Loughlin, recalling how he helped move them into the Parkside neighborhood when he patrolled the area.
Loughlin characterized the shooting as a tragedy and vowed that whoever is responsible will be brought to justice.
Police declined to reveal details of the investigation. Asked if the shooting was a random event, Loughlin said, “We really don’t know yet. Of course, it was raining last night, it was dark, it was still stormy. We’re still trying to discover the facts and circumstances.”
The hospital’s security guards wear uniforms but are unarmed, he said.
Loughlin urged anyone who may know the identity of the two people who fled the scene to contact police.
“I’m sure someone knows what happened out there,” he said. “We need help from the public on this.”
At least six detectives, along with patrol officers, were working on the case Sunday, Loughlin said, and arrangements were being made for an autopsy.

The Escambia Sheriff’s Office announced that they have arrested one of their employees for theft of evidence.
According to spokesperson Glenn Austin, an evidence technician was arrested Friday in connection with the theft of $160 in counterfeit money.
Ricky Adams was charged in connection with the theft and fired from his position, Austin said.
Adams had worked at the Sheriff’s Office since February 2002.
Austin said the counterfeit money came from a recent case in which Jeremy Nelson, 20, of Pensacola allegedly bought a 1993 Chevrolet Caprice from 17-year-old Devin Sommerfeld with $1,300 in phony money.
Austin said investigators do not believe anything else was taken.

A 21-year-old Modesto man was arrested outside the Target store on McHenry Avenue after he was seen on video stealing from the business for the third time in a month, according to police Sgt. Brian Findlen.
Arnold Ruiz was charged with commercial burglary and resisting arrest after he allegedly placed a portable DVD player in a bag and left the store.
It was the third time he’s been caught on camera stealing from the store at 3405 McHenry Ave., Findlen said.
On Aug. 18, Ruiz was seen allegedly stealing a DVD player. Ten days later, he was captured on video stealing a Bluetooth device. In each instance, store security wasn’t able to take action on him, according to Findlen.
On Wednesday at about 3:30 p.m., security officesr watched him enter the store with an empty bag. A few minutes later, he was seen walking past cash registers with something in the bag.
Ruiz left the store and got into an a car, which began driving through the parking lot. Police, whom security had notified minutes earlier, arrived and when Ruiz saw them, he jumped out of the car and began to run, Findlen said.
He was chased down by officer Matt Spurlock at a nearby tire shop, Findlen said.

Community tips bring police to burglary www.privateofficer.com

Community tip brings police to burglary http://www.privateofficer.com

NORTH PLAINFIELD NJ Sept 8 2008 —Calling it a “great story of community policing,” the borough’s police chief Wednesday credited an alert tipster with pointing authorities toward suspicious activity at a local business that led to the arrest of three brothers on charges they stole thousands of dollars worth of truck accessories.
Luis Lozada-Salguero, 44, Raul Lozada-Salguero, 42, both of Rockview Avenue in North Plainfield, and Fabian Lozada-Salguero, 39, of Plainfield, were arrested late Tuesday, Sept. 2, after police found them with stolen truck accessories from the Camp-Out store at Route 22 and Jefferson Avenue, borough police Chief William Parenti said.
The brothers were all longtime Camp-Out employees, a store official said.An area resident told Dispatcher Scott Wiecenski that he grew suspicious when he saw a red pickup truck pull into the driveway of the closed business, police said.
When Officer Justin Pelissier spotted the truck leaving, police said he alerted Sgt. Joseph Stopinski, Officer Chris Bond and Officer Al Domizi, who were able to stop the vehicle and recover the merchandise from the truck’s bed.
Chris Scott, owner of the North Plainfield Camp-Out branch, said the items — including diamond-plated truck bed covers, aluminum truck ramps and tailgate panels, sliding windows and wheels and tires — carry a total worth of more than $35,000.Scott said he worked with police and the unidentified tipster — whom Scott knows but declined to identify — from Camp-Out’s corporate offices in Las Vegas to build their case.
Scott said the brothers, during business hours, loaded the merchandise on a trailer while in the store’s western storage lot before towing it to an eastern lot. After the business closed, Scott said the men returned at about 9 p.m. to transfer the items onto the truck.Although Scott said the men tried to block security cameras by building a wall of trailers, he said “they didn’t do a good job” because they still were captured on tape.Scott said Luis Lozada-Salguero had been a Camp-Out employee for about 13 years, Fabian Lozada-Salguero for 12 and Raul Lozada-Salguero on and off for about a decade.
The three men were charged through the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office with third-degree theft and criminal trespass, Parenti said. They were then taken to the Somerset County Jail, he said.A jail official said Wednesday, Sept. 3, that Luis Lozada-Salguero had been released after posting bail while his two brothers remained in custody with bail set at $5,000 each with an option to pay 10 percent of the full amount.Scott, who credited borough police for their “great job” in thwarting the theft, said he feels hurt following the incident because he considers “every one of the employees family” no matter how long they’ve worked with the business.
“To say the least I’m hurt because I trust everybody who’s employed at Camp-Out and I respect everybody who’s employed at Camp-Out,” he said.
“So it goes without saying. Am I hurt? Of course I’m hurt.”

Cries for help for the birds www.privateofficer.com

Cries for help for the birds http://www.privateofficer.com

TRENTON, N.J. Sept 8 2008 – Cries for help inside a Trenton, N.J., home turned out to be for the birds.
Neighbors called police Wednesday morning after hearing a woman’s persistent cry of “Help me! Help me!” coming from a house. Officers arrived and when no one answered the door, they kicked it in to make a rescue.
But instead of a damsel in distress, officers found a caged cockatoo with a convincing call.
It wasn’t the first time the 10-year-old bird named Luna said something that brought authorities to the home of owner Evelyn DeLeon.
About seven years ago, the bird cried like a baby for hours, leading to reports of a possible abandoned baby and a visit to the home by state child welfare workers. But it was only Luna practicing a newfound sound, DeLeon says.
DeLeon says her bird learns much of her ever-growing vocabulary from watching television, in both English and Spanish.

Fire Chief Pleads Guilty To $38,000 Theft www.privateofficer.com

Fire Chief Pleads Guilty To $38,000 Theft http://www.privateofficer.com

BROWNSTOWN, Ind. Sept 8 2008
Bryan Hill
Ntl. Assoc. Private Officers
www.privateofficer.com - The former township fire chief in southern Indiana is pleading guilty to charges he stole more than $38,000 from the department.
Under the plea agreement entered in Jackson County Court, former Carr Township fire chief Russell Todd Snodgrass will serve no more than six months in prison and repay nearly $29,000 to the department.
The rest of the loss was paid by the department’s insurance company.
A sentencing hearing is scheduled for March 9, allowing time for authorities to check his progress in repaying the money.
Prosecutors say Snodgrass took the money from 2003 to 2005, while he was chief of the rural department between Seymour and Bedford.
An audit found that Snodgrass used about $750 of the money on car repairs and to buy fishing lures and a Guns N’ Roses album.
