A private security officer in the right place and at the right time foiled an armed robbery attempt Tuesday night when he happened upon the holdup and held a suspect at gunpoint until police arrived.
Those two men were arrested after the incident in the 3700 block of South 124th East Avenue, police said.
The suspects were armed with a .22-caliber handgun and they had already fired shots into the air as they took money, jewelry and a cell phone from a man who was walking in the area about 8:30 p.m., said Tulsa Police Sgt. Dedlorn Sanders.
The security officer who witnessed at least part of the incident, was able to force one of the robbers to the ground, but the other fled, Sanders said. A K-9 unit tracked the man to an abandoned house three blocks east, where he was hiding.
Quantell Jamar Alverson and James Patrick Payne, both 18, were taken into custody without incident, police said.
Alverson was booked into the Tulsa Jail on complaints of armed robbery, shooting with intent to kill and possessing a firearm in commission of a felony.
His bond was set at $135,000. Payne was booked on complaints of robbery with a firearm, possessing a firearm in commission of a felony and a previous offense of violating a curfew.
His bond was set at $60,150.
It was unclear why the security officer was in the area, Sanders said his presence was a lucky coincidence.
