Workplace violence on the rise http://www.privateofficer.com

Atlanta GA Sept 11 2008
Workplace violence affects more than two million workers in the United States every year and accounts for about 20 percent of all violent crime.
That’s according to “Preventing Gun Violence in the Workplace,” a Connecting Research in Security to Practice (CRISP) Report commissioned by the ASIS Foundation.
The report also finds that even though most workplace violence is not fatal, an average of 500 homicides occur in U.S. workplaces each year, at a cost of $800,000 for each death.
“This report addresses the problem of gun violence in the workplace and strategies to prevent it,” says Martin Gill, chair of the ASIS Foundation Research Council.
Its geographic focus is the United States because of the unique protections the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution gives to the possession and carrying of firearms.
“More than three-quarters of workplace homicides are committed with guns,” author Dana Loomis writes.
“About two-thirds of workplace homicides are related to robbery; the remainder result from conflicts between workers and clients, coworkers, acquaintances or family members.”
The report begins with a description of the broad problem of workplace violence and then discusses factors contributing to gun violence in the workplace, responses to the problem, challenges to those responses, and research on the effectiveness of various responses. Finally, specific actions are recommended along with a summary of future research needs.
While specific information about how to prevent gun violence on the job is scarce, a comprehensive, written policy prohibiting weapons in the workplace is an essential part of an employer’s violence-prevention plan, Loomis concludes.
Research suggests that workplaces that prohibit weapons are significantly less likely to experience a worker homicide than workplaces that allow guns. To download a copy of the CRISP Report “
Preventing Gun Violence in the Workplace,” go to www.asisonline.org/foundation/guns.pdf.

http://www.privateofficer.com/ – A former Clarksville attorney found guilty earlier of stealing from clients, has now received a 10-year sentence on Tuesday for stealing thousands of dollars .
Van Riggins was accused of stealing more than $180,000 from clients he was supposed to be helping. The attorney was working with numerous clients on their debt repayments.
The victims thought he was helping them pay off creditors in their estate and bankruptcy cases, but Riggins was instead keeping portions of that money.
Riggins was arrested after several complaints were filed with police. He will serve nine months of the sentence at the Montgomery County workhouse, and the remainder on state probation.
He will also have to pay back his clients and his status to practice law has been lifted.

According to the report, store security at Publix in the 6500 block of S.E. Kanner Highway witnessed Brandon Geboe, 19, and Eric McArthur, also 19, enter the store and go straight to the pharmacy section.

Troopers order pizza, make drug arrest http://www.privateofficer.com

CHARLESTON WV Sept 11 2008

http://www.privateofficer.com/ — West Virginia State Police ordered a pizza to nab a suspected meth-lab operator in Charleston. State Troopers found a meth lab in the basement of Donna Jean Moles’ kitchen while executing a search warrant Aug. 31.
They also found three jars of the decongestant Sudafed undergoing a chemical process in her kitchen and baggies of meth and marijuana in a bedroom.
They had the evidence that they had come for but they didn’t have the occupant.
So police set out to find her. And troopers contacted the 47-year-old woman’s employer, Domino’s, and arranged to have her deliver a pizza on Saturday to an undisclosed location. Troopers swooped down and took her into custody there.
Moles is charged with operating a clandestine meth lab and several other drug-related charges.
She was being held Tuesday at the South Central Regional Jail.
It was not immediately clear if she has secured an attorney.

12 Ohio State Troopers Fired http://www.privateofficer.com

Canton Ohio Sept 11 2008

A state police unit is missing almost a dozen of it’s troopers after authorities fired them for cheating on a recent test. State officials say that a dozen State Highway Patrol troopers, including 11 from the Canton post, have been fired for cheating on a certification test for drunken-driving detection devices.
Lt. Eric Sheppard, commander of the Canton post said his post lost three sergeants and eight troopers from his staff of 32. He said the post is attempting to rearrange shifts to make up the difference but has had to seek help from Medina and Stark County posts.
Troopers were fired for using cheat sheets or knowing about the cheat sheets and not alerting officials.
Troopers and other police officers must be certified annually before they can administer tests that measure alcohol on drunken driving suspects.
The troopers’ test involves 50 multiple choice questions. Canton city prosecutors said up to 70 drunken driving cases could be affected.
In making the announcement, officials did not say how the manpower for the Canton post would be restaffed or the names of the troopers involved.

Security officer sued for excessive force www.privateofficer.com

Security officer sued for excessive force http://www.privateofficer.com

Aurora IL. Sept 11 2008

A security guard for an Aurora apartment complex has been sued for allegedly injuring a resident while trying to restrain him. This suit was filed almost two years after the same guard was charged with impersonating a police officer while restraining a tenant at the same apartment complex.
According to Kane County court records, on Aug. 26, 2008, Brian George of Niles was working as a security guard in the Randall West apartment complex. The suit alleges that George tried to restrain a tenant, who suffered severe injuries to his nervous system.
The suit alleges that George tried to restrain the tenant without cause or provocation and used unnecessary force.
George was employed by Tactical Security at the time of the injuries, the suit says. The suit charges that Tactical Security failed to investigate George’s qualifications and failed to supervise his work.
In September 2006, George was charged with impersonating a police officer at Randall West.
Prosecutors said George identified himself as a police officer, handcuffed a teen and threatened to arrest him. George was wearing a bulletproof vest with a silver pin and badges on it, police said.
A month earlier, George was charged with felony unlawful use of a weapon, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and unlawful use of a weapon without an firearm owner’s identification card after police responded to calls about a security guard harassing residents of an apartment complex in the 800 block of North Randall Road in Aurora, prosecutors said.
That case was dismissed when it was revealed that an officer told a grand jury that George had previously been convicted of a felony for possession of a firearm with an expired owner’s identification card. George actually had been charged with a felony in 2002, but convicted of a misdemeanor. He was given probation in that case.
Neither the attorney for the tenant nor Tactical Security could be reached for comment.
The suit asks for $50,000 in damages.

Security officers unpaid, checks bounce www.privateofficer.com

Security officers go unpaid, checks bouncing, http://www.privateofficer.com

Tucson AZ Sept 11 2008

Recently, security officers at 32 federal buildings in Arizona have gone unpaid for three weeks, including the ports of entry in Douglas, Naco, Nogales, and Yuma.
The security officers who guard the federal building downtown are contract employees of National Command Link Network also known as NCLN-20, a private security firm out of the bay area.
Union representative Bob Inman says Arizona employees have had problems with their paychecks.
“They were paid on the 29th of August and their checks bounced that pay period,” says Inman.
Inman says the company has been bouncing checks every since they took over the contract nearly a year ago.
One employee tried four times to get his August 28th paycheck cashed. Each time the bank told him there are no funds in that account.
Bob Inman says he gets phone calls daily from workers.
“He said I just finally got my rent straightened out and now my landlord came over today for rent. I don’t have any money to pay my rent what are they going to do put me, my wife and kids on the street.”
Some of the security officers are threatening to leave their posts but Inman is persuading them to stay and is working on getting this straightened out.
NCLN 20 say it’s not true and asked that we contact their attorney. Repeated calls to the firm to get their attorney’s name were not returned.
The federal government claims that they have paid NCLN 20 and are not renewing their contract with the company next year.
