NASHVILLE, Tenn. Sept 12 2008 – A woman was arrested for posting false online ads about her husband’s ex-wife.
In Wilson County Tuesday, Kathryn Hulsey pleaded guilty to three felony counts of identity theft. Her husband, Mike Hulsey, was also charged though much less than the 37 counts Kathy Hulsey originally faced.
The target of the ads said strange men called her cell phone and showed up at her job.
“It was very scary, very, very scary,” said the victim of identity theft and cyber stalking.
She didn’t lose any money, but she lost her sense of security, she said.
“Because she had put so much of my personal information online on these really bad Web sites,” she said.
The information was posted to Web sites for dating, casual sex and prostitution.
Fabricated ads also appeared on Craigslist, a popular Web site where people post ads for roommates, employment and furniture sales, etc.
“‘Degrade me, beat me, tell me I’m worthless and I’m all yours,’” she read from one ad. “‘I’m into most things, as long as the compensation is right.’
The ads originated with Kathryn “Kathy” Turney, now Kathy Hulsey. According to the courts, she embarked on a cyber smear campaign.
“She terrorized me for a year and a half,” the victim said.
Hulsey’s so-called prank ended Feb. 1, 2007.
The TBI arrested Hulsey and confiscated her laptop.
“Anytime that you set up an account in another real person’s name on the Internet, you’re committing identity theft,” said Wilson County Assistant District Attorney General Bobby Hibbett.
The Hulseys, who now live in Arizona, got probation.
“I don’t think they got what they should’ve gotten. But it’s over, and I can move on,” said the victim.
The Hulseys’ attorney said the couple expresses regret. Mike Hulsey is only charged with one count of “invasion of privacy.”
The victim wanted to share her story about this relatively new crime. She said her meticulous record-keeping got the perpetrators in trouble with the law.
Kathy pleaded guilty Tuesday; Mike did not plead guilty or not guilty. Mike agreed to enter into pretrial diversion. The couple’s attorney said both Hulseys’ records will be expunged or wiped clean at the conclusion of probation providing the two stay out of trouble.
