NYC Security Officer Shot, Killed http://www.privateofficer.com
Police investigators say that a private security officer on duty at a city pool was killed and investigators are seeking at least two suspects in the murder.
Police said that someone shot Brownsville resident Damien Bowles, 34, just outside the Douglass Street pool in the Thomas Geene Playground.
Although detectives do have a few leads in the case, they admit they still don’t have an exact motive and that one of their theories is that the shooting could have been connected to an argument between Bowles and another man at a late night grocery earlier that evening, officials surmised.

Police charge woman with not feeding ailing mother www.privateofficer.com
Woman charged with not feeding ailing mother http://www.privateofficer.com
Geneva Banks is being held on a $25,000 bond after her arraignment today.
Banks was charged with neglecting her 69-year-old mother, Alicia Miller. Banks failed to feed, bathe and clothe her mother for several weeks in March.
Miller suffered dehydration, malnutrition, ulcers and intestinal infections before she died in April at Cleveland Clinic, said Cuyahoga County prosecutor’s spokesman Ryan Miday. The Cuyahoga County coroner ruled Miller’s death a homicide.
Banks volunteered to care for her mother in her East 118th Street home rather than place the woman in a nursing home. But she failed to provide even basic caretaking for the invalid, Miday said.

Bank robbery suspect killed during police shoot-out http://www.privateofficer.com
Alabama State Troopers say that officers were on the look out for the bank robbery suspect when officers encountered the man and as they tried to take him into custody they were put into a position where they had to defend themselves.
As Sheriff’s Office investigators analyzed the scene, the man’s body remained under a blue tarp in a drainage ditch by the interstate, several yards from the white Chevrolet C1500 truck he had been driving.
“The officers were forced to shoot him,” said Maj. Anthony Lowery, Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office spokesman.
A handgun and other weapons were recovered from the suspect’s body, he said. Still, it remained unclear whether the suspect had fired at the officers before being shot, Lowrey said.
The suspect’s name and other identifying information were not released pending notification of his relatives, Lowery said.
The Loxley patrolmen involved in the incident were placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation by the Sheriff’s Office, Daphne Police and the county district attorney’s office, investigators said.

Someone was “fishing” for money at apartments www.privateofficer.com
Someone was “fishing” for money at apartments http://www.privateofficer.com
Police say that an Atlanta area man decided to go on a fishing trip but he didn’t bring a tackle box or the usual gear with him.
Instead, police say that the man had decided to “fish for money”
Management personnel at a southwest Atlanta apartment complex reported last week that someone tried to “fish” checks and money orders out of a rent drop box using a contraption made out of a mouse trap and rope, according to an Atlanta police report.
The staff at Ashley Glen Apartments didn’t know whether the would-be thief actually got anything out of the box, the report said.
Twice last week, on Sept. 2 and 5, apartment complex employees came to work in the morning and found the makeshift devices in their drop box: a piece of rope with a glue-type mouse trap tied on the end, the report said.
Both mouse traps had been cut in half to fit into the drop box.
The police report didn’t list any possible suspects in the caper, but police advised the apartment complex, on the 1300 block of Kimberly Way S.W., either to close the drop box or install a more secure one.
A security camera is in place and was pointed at the drop box, but police couldn’t access the surveillance footage when the incident was reported Sept. 5.
Police say that they’re not sure if the “fisherman” caught anything or not but that he must have found another fishing hole because he hasn’t returned to these apartments since the his last trip.

Police officer charged with sexual assault of prisoner www.privateofficer.com
Police officer arrested for sexual assault of prisoner http://www.privateofficer.com
A police officer for the city of Erie, Colo. was arrested Wednesday night after an 18-year-old woman said he fondled her following her arrest.
Chad Aaron Broder, 25, was arrested at his home in Frederick, Colo., by Greeley detectives after a complaint was filed on Sept. 3 by the woman.
The alleged victim said she was arrested for violation of a restraining order and was handcuffed in the front seat of a City of Erie marked police car on Sept. 1, when Broder touched her inappropriately and placed her hands on him. She was being driven to the Weld County jail at the time.
She said he pulled over in the 2400 block of O Street in Greeley at about 6 p.m.
According Broder’s arrest affidavit obtained by the Greeley Tribune, Broder unlocked one of her hands and told her not to do anything stupid. He then kissed her, placed her hand on his crotch and placed his hand near her groin, the affidavit alleged.
Broder also allegedly asked about the woman’s sexual fetishes, which he said he had read about on her MySpace Web site. The woman said he asked her if she had ever engaged in sexual acts while handcuffed or had sex with a police officer in uniform.
When police were contacted by the woman, they had her telephone Broder while they recorded the conversation and he allegedly talked about what happened, the affidavit stated.
Broder was booked for investigation of criminal attempt to commit sexual assault and investigation of unlawful sexual contact.
He remained in the Weld County Jail Thursday, with no bond, pending a court appearance.

Campus security officer, student receives awards www.privateofficer.com
Campus security officer, student receive awards http://www.privateofficer.com
A campus security officer and a student at St. John’s University in Queens New York are still being called heros months after they subdued an armed masked man carrying a rifle.
But school officials say that thanks to student Chris Benson and security officer Dan Boylan, the man was captured and no one was hurt.
Benson, 22, a senior from Little Neck, Queens, was chatting on the phone with his girlfriend when he spotted a fellow student, Omesh Hiraman, wearing a Fred Flintstone mask and carrying a rifle in a plastic bag.
“Out of the corner of my eye, I saw this guy wearing a mask and a hoodie. It was 96 degrees out then so it was odd,” recalled Benson, who plans to join the NYPD in January.
His NYPD Cadet Corps training kicked in and he tailed the suspect.
“I was worried he would start shooting into the crowd,” Benson said.
But as the suspect rounded a corner, he smacked into Boylan, 62, a campus security officer and retired NYPD lieutenant.
“I just grabbed the rifle and started yanking it out of his hand,” said the Long Island father of three, calling the struggle a “tug of war.”
The duo took away Hiraman’s .50-caliber weapon and was able to take the man into custody and held him until police could arrive.
Benson and Boylan play down their act of heroism, but university spokesman Dominic Scianna, who nominated them for a Post Liberty Medal in the Courage category, does not.
“Not many people would have stepped in,” he said.

Pit bulls Kill 4 Month Old Baby http://www.privateofficer.com
North Las Vegas police say a 4-month-old baby girl was mauled to death by the family’s pit bulls. It happened at the family’s home.
Neighbors say the baby was being watched by her grandmother — while her parents were at work. It’s not known at this time why the dogs attacked her.
Police say they got the call around 11:30 a.m. and came out to Eagle View.
Neighbors also say the grandmother suffered some minor injuries. Eyewitness News cameras did see someone being taken away on a stretcher.
Oscar Lewis lives across the street. He says he has several dogs around the house, and he also has four kids. Lewis says you have to be extra careful with the combination. “They become territorial.
Many neighbors we talked to didn’t know the family. Lewis said he saw the pit bulls out once or twice but avoided contact with them.
Police are talking with the family to try and understand what went wrong. But they do say they do not expect any charges to be filed.

YouTube bans videos that incite people to violence www.privateofficer.com
YouTube bans videos that incite others to violence http://www.privateofficer.com
The video-sharing service YouTube is banning submissions that involve “inciting others to violence,” following criticism from Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman (I-Conn.) that the site was too open to terrorist groups disseminating militant propaganda.
The company earlier this year removed some of the videos that Lieberman targeted, many of which were marked with the logos of al-Qaeda and affiliated groups. But the company refused to take down most of the videos on the senator’s list, saying they did not violate the Web site’s guidelines against graphic violence or hate speech.
Now that videos inciting others to violence are banned, more videos by the terrorist groups in question may be removed.
“YouTube reviews its content guidelines a few times a year, and we take the community’s input seriously,” YouTube spokesman Ricardo Reyes said. “The senator made some good points.”
“YouTube was being used by Islamist terrorist organizations to recruit and train followers via the Internet and to incite terrorist attacks around the world, including right here in the United States,” Lieberman said in a statement. “I expect these stronger community guidelines to decrease the number of videos on YouTube produced by al-Qaeda and affiliated Islamist terrorist organizations.”
The standoff between the senator and the nation’s largest video-sharing site aroused arguments that have become commonplace since Sept. 11, 2001: It pitted civil rights — in this case, free speech — against demands to crack down on terrorism.
In May, Lieberman issued a bipartisan report by the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs staff that described how al-Qaeda created and managed its online media.
Later that month, Lieberman wrote a letter to officials at Google [which owns YouTube] demanding that the company “immediately remove content produced by Islamic terrorist organizations from YouTube. This should be a straightforward task since so many of the Islamist terrorist organizations brand their material with logos or icons.”
He also asked Google to explain what changes would be made to YouTube’s guidelines to address “violent extremist material
Because the volume of videos uploaded to YouTube is vast — hundreds of thousands every day — the company says it cannot monitor what gets posted. Instead, it relies on users to flag videos that violate its “Community Guidelines.”
When the company removed videos after Lieberman’s request in May, the company did so because they violated its existing guidelines prohibiting graphic violence and hate speech. Some of the videos depicted violent attacks on U.S. soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.
But most of the videos highlighted by Lieberman were not removed.
“While we respect and understand his[Lieberman's] views, YouTube encourages free speech and defends everyone’s right to express unpopular points of view,” the company said in a statement at the time.
The company’s stance now appears to have changed.
Exactly what kind of videos will be deemed to be “inciting others to violence,” will be considered on a case-by-case basis, though First Amendment experts said the company could run into trouble if the phrase is interpreted too broadly.
“We subscribe to the common sense rule,” Reyes said. “Our guidelines are not written for lawyers.”

Priest busted for selling cocaine at Univ. of Illinois http://www.privateofficer.com
A Catholic priest was charged this week with selling cocaine from his office and residence at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, local news organizations report.
The Rev. Christopher Layden, 33, was arrested Wednesday after police found “about 3 grams of powder cocaine and items of drug paraphernalia” while executing a search warrant on the campus, according to The Pantagraph.
Layden pleaded not guilty to three charges, the paper says.
The News-Gazette reports an informant told police that he has used cocaine with the priest “40 to 50 times” since 2007. “First Assistant State’s Attorney Steve Ziegler said in court Thursday that the UI police monitored a cocaine purchase by the informant from Layden on Sept. 4,” the paper says.
Here’s the campus police department’s blotter entry about this case. The Peoria Diocese says in a statement to the local ABC affiliate that it was “shocked and saddened” to learn of the priest’s arrest. He has been suspended pending the outcome of the case, the statement says.
