Chicago police officer shoots son, daughter, commits suicide http://www.privateofficer.com

Chicago DC Sept 16 2008
An off-duty Chicago police officer shot his young son and daughter, then committed suicide inside his home on the Southwest Side Monday morning, officials said.
The girl later died. The children were found with bullet wounds to their bodies inside the officer’s home in the 2700 block of West 43rd Street, about 10:45 a.m., police spokeswoman Monique Bond said.
The man was found with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the head, she said. Officials have given varying ages of the children, but public records show the girl was 7 years old and the boy was 9.
The man and two children have not been identified by authorities. The children were taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital in critical condition, and the girl was pronounced dead at 11:52 a.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. She appeared to have been shot in the head, an office spokesman said
The man, who a police spokeswoman said was a 4-year veteran of the department who worked in the Englewood District, was pronounced dead at 12:22 p.m. at the scene.
He was described as in his late-20s.
First Deputy Supt. James Jackson said police believe the officer and his ex-wife had joint custody of the children and had been divorced for about three years. Authorities, however, were still trying to determine the exact nature of their relationship history. The mother was not at the home at the time of the shooting.
She later arrived at Mt. Sinai Hospital to be with her children, according to police.Neighbors called 911 after hearing the gunfire, police officials said. Jonathan Arenas, 26, who lives about two blocks west of the residence, said he was walking when he saw officers in full SWAT gear swarming the home.Arenas said he heard two gunshots and then heard a grenade go off and saw the as many as 30 officers swarm into the home.
Shortly after, he watched emergency officials bring the children out on a stretcher.

Police, security officers arrest protestors http://www.privateofficer.com

WISE, Va. Sept 16 2008

http://www.privateofficer.com/ Fourteen protesters who locked themselves to steel drums at the construction site of Dominion Virginia’s Wise County coal-fired power plant have been arrested.
Captain Mike Holbrook of the Wise County Sheriff’s Department says that security officers and deputies monitoring the area took the protesters into custody and they were all charged with felony trespassing at the site in St. Paul. They were taken to Wise for arraignment.
About 30 people entered the site of about 6 a.m. today to protest Dominion’s $1.8 billion coal-fired power plant. Many stuck their arms through holes in steel drums that were chained to an entrance gate.
Holbrook said a fire crew was called to cut the protesters free from the drums, but they removed their arms as firefighters began sawing the tops off.
The protesters say the 585-megawatt power plant poses a health risk and would create a greater demand for coal derived from mountaintop removal mining.
All of those arrested were released on bond notices.

A Lancaster man was arrested over the weekend after he left his loaded pistol at a Fort Mill playground and a 7-year-old girl found it, according to a York County Sheriff’s Office report.
A deputy was called to Plaza Fiesta shopping center just after 1:45 p.m. Saturday by a man who said a 7-year-old girl had given him a gun that she found on the playground.
The weapon was fully loaded when the girl discovered it, the report stated.
Later, 31-year-old Anthony Roberts asked a security guard if he could have his gun back, the report stated.
Roberts told the sheriff’s deputy that he had his gun on the playground and must have dropped it when he went to get his son.
Roberts has a concealed weapons permit, but signs at the entrances to Plaza Fiesta said no weapons were allowed, the report stated.
Roberts was charged with trespassing after notice because he brought the gun into Plaza Fiesta.

City hires private officers to enforce parking violations http://www.privateofficer.com

Fargo N.D. Sept 16 2008

Ntl. Assoc. Private Officers
www.privateofficer.com The city of Fargo has hired a private security firm to crack down on college students parking illegally in residential neighborhoods.
The target area is near North Dakota State University.
The city had been looking into the parking problem for several months and had looked at several options of enforcement including the hiring of a private company to patrol the area and ticket violators.
Ken Enockson is president of the Roosevelt Neighborhood Association. He says the neighborhood has problems with blocked driveways and illegal parking.
Parking tickets are $15, and officials say the ticket revenue will be used to help pay for a uniformed security officer to patrol the area.
NDSU student body President Joe Heilmen says many students cannot afford a $110 campus parking permit and thus they park on the streets wherever they find an open space.
The parking enforcement will begin immediately according to officials.
This is the first time in North Dekota that a private security firm has been hired to provide such services on public streets according to an official.

Cleveland OH police lieutenant sent to prison over payroll thefts www.privateofficer.com

Cleveland OH police lieutenant sent to prison for payroll thefts http://www.privateofficer.com

CLEVELAND OH Sept 16 2008– A former Cleveland police lieutenant was handcuffed and ordered to spend four years in prison Monday for charging the city for more hours than he worked.
Eddie Jackson, 54, a 23-year-veteran, was fired in June after a Cuyahoga County jury found him guilty of theft in office and eight counts of tampering with records between November 2005 and June 2006.
Common Pleas Judge Peter Corrigan gave Jackson four years on each count but ran them all concurrently.
Corrigan told Jackson that he had an important job of investigating complaints against police officers. The judge then admonished Jackson for violating the public’s trust and stealing nearly $7,500 from the Police Department.
“You felt like the rules didn’t apply to you and implied some sort of conspiracy,” Corrigan said. “You didn’t do what you were supposed to do.”
Jackson declined to address the court when given the chance. Jackson’s lawyer asked that his client be freed while the conviction is appealed, but Corrigan denied the request.
Jackson’s theft came to the attention of the department’s Office of Internal Affairs when he refused to investigate rumors that others in his office were cooking the duty reports and getting paid more than they deserved.
The Overtime Review Unit investigated Jackson, comparing time stamps on video footage of Jackson arriving and leaving the office to the hours he claimed to have been at work.
The investigation concluded that on 102 of the 128 days in question, Jackson filled out his timesheets vaguely and inaccurately and was paid about $7,000 more than he earned.

Hurricane Ike brings devastation, power outages and arrests in 20 states www.privateofficer.com

Hurricane Ike brings devastation, power outages and arrests in 20 states http://www.privateofficer.com

Atlanta GA. Sept 16 2008

Though Hurricane Ike entered through the Gulf of Mexico in Texas early Saturday morning and rumbled through Galveston destroying buildings and flooding much of the island before hitting Houston with a knock-out.
More than 2000 persons were rescued there and at least six people were killed. But the story does’nt end there.
The storm continued up through the center of the country and headed north and then northeast causing massive flooding and power outages.
Dayton Ohio and Louisville Kentucky were two of the cities hit with huge storms causing power lines and trees to come down.
Dayton reported more than 200,000 without power and Louisville estimated more than 300,000 customers had no power. Both states were forced to call in the National Guard to help police the hard hit areas and apprehend looters, direct traffic, and aid victims. Police say at least thirty arrests have been made so far for looting and burglary.
In other parts of the country, winds blowing at over 40 miles an hour toppled a tree onto a Nashville golf course pinning two golfers in their cart and killing them.
A girl in southern Kentucky was also killed when a tree fell on her as she stood in her driveway. Indiana, Missouri, Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, and other states all became victims of the hurricane that had landed a thousand miles away.
The storm also kicked up tornadoes as it continued its path of destruction. Cities and towns were flooded and damage is now in the billion dollar range and deaths due to the storm system are now numbered at 60.
Police in Galveston say that they have arrested a dozen or so looters while in other cities police have also made arrests for burglary, thefts, and looting. And the devastation isn’t over yet. Neither is the pain, discomfort, or losses from the storm.
Back in Houston, police say at least 81 people have been arrested for looting. The crimes have hit several areas of our city as Ike was making landfall and after the monster storm moved out. “It’s very disheartening because there’s enough tragedy to infrastructure,…to the act of a theft,” Houston Police Department Capt. Bruce Williams said. So what did they steal during Ike? Officials say everything from furniture to clothes and even liquor.
Council member Adrian Garcia – a former Houston Police Officer– says the act is disgusting at best.”This is horrible when mother nature is upon you and is putting your life in danger and you want to be out there trying to steal from someone else it is unfortunate that someone would have that kind of mindset,” he said.
Williams says the criminals – the 81 people – Houstonians accused of trying to steal from Houstonians will be dealt with swiftly and with a firm hand. This was an image Houston frowned upon in New Orleans but now needs to deal with in it’s own backyard.
It’s going to be weeks before many areas in the country have power according to the Department Of homeland Security and FEMA.
In the meantime, aid is pouring in to the hardest hit areas, police and guardsmen have been on full alert and people are praying that this will be the last hurricane of the season.

A six-year Sacramento Police patrolman is out on bail today after his arrest on charges that included indecent exposure, brandishing a firearm and suspicion of public drunkeness.
Jeffrey Wayne McKay, 34, of Rocklin, was arrested by Rocklin police Saturday after officers were called to Heron Court and Darby Road about a disturbance at about 10 p.m., a Rocklin police spokesman said.

An armored truck driver was arrested Saturday after police say he pointed a nickel-plated revolver at another driver.
Ronald F. Zito, 31, of Cranston, R.I., is scheduled to be arraigned this morning in Westborough District Court on a charge of assault with a dangerous weapon. Police said he posted $300 bail after his arrest.
“It was kind of a road-rage type situation,” said Sgt. Steven Reale.
The alleged victim called police Saturday at 12:38 p.m., reporting he had sped through a red light on East Main Street after Zito pulled beside him and held up a gun.
Zito had been following extremely closely and appeared agitated when the other driver stopped for traffic, police said.
Then, in the area of Bay State Commons, Zito pointed the gun directly at the man, which Reale said prompted the call to police.
The alleged victim had his 4-year-old son in his backseat, police said.
Zito parked the Dunbar Armored Car he’d been driving in front of Roche Bros. in the Bay State Commons shopping plaza.
Patrolman Jeffrey Johnson stopped Zito as he left the plaza.
As an armored car driver, Zito’s possession of the handgun was lawful. The assault charge, police said, is because Zito used the gun to scare the other driver.
“Threatening someone with it is actually assault, putting someone in fear,” Reale said.

A Fillmore couple were at large Monday morning, suspected of abandoning their 4-year-old daughter when a guard at Kohls on Telephone Road tried to stop them from stealing.
Gerardo Rodriguez, 24, and Yanira Camargo, 22, were attempting to leave the store just before 5 p.m. Sunday with a shopping cart of merchandise they did not pay for when a guard confronted them, according to a report from the Ventura Police Department.
Their daughter was riding in the cart when the pair was confronted by the store’s loss prevention officials.
The two ran to their car to get away leaving the little girl behind, police said. The girl, still in the cart, was then almost struck by another vehicle traveling through the parking lot, the report said.
The girl has been placed with a guardian. The couple still remain at large.

A security officer in fear for his life said that he fired shots at two pit bulldogs early today after he said they were sicced on him.
Oscar Washington said he was patrolling the Shirewood Apartments in Shreveport when someone released the dogs. The dogs charged straight at him as he was walking in the complex.
He said as the dogs came closer to him he shot at one of the dogs. The dog ran away and it’s not known if it was hit.
The security officer notified police and animal control and the other dog was captured by animal control a short time afterwards.
“I’ve never had anyone sic dogs on me like that, and if I hadn’t did what I did they would have eaten me alive,” Washington said.
Police say that if it’s found that a person did command the dogs to attack, they could face felony assault charges.
