According to a report, a deputy smelled alcohol on the driver’s breath and, when he asked him to step outside the vehicle, he appeared nervous and couldn’t stand still, the report said.
Deputies now say that the Hilton Head Island security guard faces drug charges after crack cocaine was found inside his marked cruiser during a traffic stop, according to a Beaufort County sheriff’s report released Wednesday.
The 38-year-old guard told deputies he drank a 40-ounce bottle of malt liquor before work and took some cold medication, according to the report.
Deputies then searched the security vehicle and found crack cocaine residue on the seat and a bag containing less than a gram of crack cocaine in his jacket, the report said.
When deputies arrested the security officer, he allegedly dropped a silver pipe by the side of the road. The man was charged with possession of crack cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia. Deputies said that he was not impaired enough to be charged with DUI.
He worked as a guard for a local security company that is mainly hired to patrol businesses and apartment complexes. The owner of the company said he was fired after the incident.

Two Boston men and a Norwell woman were arrested after police received a shoplifting complaint from the Kmart store on Grossman Drive.
Police said Robert H. Stone, 24, and Carlos N. Rivera Jr., 24, were both charged with larceny over $250 and shoplifting Thursday afternoon.
Police found a keyless car fob on Rivera. Rivera told police the key was for a vehicle owned by a friend and that neither the vehicle nor the friend were in Braintree.
Police then located the vehicle and its owner, Christine M. Bowley, 30, in the parking lot. When they conducted a search of the car, police found two stolen cameras from Best Buy, a GPS system, a music player and a phone charger.
Bowley told police that she stole the items from an unlocked vehicle parked in the parking lot, police said.
Bowley was arrested and charged with receiving stolen property.

Security officers shot at by trespassers http://www.privateofficer.com
The shooting occurred at 10:55 p.m. Tuesday in the 1500 block of South Calle del Mar at Hermosa Village, a neighborhood just west of Disneyland, said Anaheim police Sgt. Rick Martinez.
The initial police report said two security officers were driving in the gated community in a marked security vehicle on Calle del Mar when they spotted three males drinking in public and attempted to talk to them, Martinez said.
Before the officers got out of their vehicle, one of the males, who was wearing a bandanna over his face, pulled out a handgun and begun firing at them. The security officers returned fire and the three males ran, Martinez said.
Police say that they identified a 17-year-old boy from the neighborhood and a 16-year-old boy from another part of Anaheim as being involved in the incident. The suspected shooter, described as 5-feet-10 and weighing 150 pounds, has not been found, Martinez said.
It’s unclear if the suspected shooter was struck by gunfire. Martinez said hospitals have been alerted, but the shooter has not turned up
The security officers were not injured in the shooting.

Prosecutors said Ismael killed Gabriel Feliciano, 17, to prevent him from testifying in a string of burglaries they committed together.
Ismael will be back in court at 11 a.m. Thursday, when Gabriel’s family will speak to the judge. He will be sentenced Oct. 22.
Gabriel’s body was found in a sewer pipe near the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo after police were told that Ismael had bragged about shooting Gabriel. He was shot in the head and neck in September 2007 when Ismael was 16.
Gabriel’s girlfriend testified during Ismael’s trial that word had gotten out that Gabriel — also known as Gordo — was going to “snitch” on Ismael about the thefts.
Gabriel had been missing for more than a week when Ismael was arrested. On Oct. 3, 2007, he led police to the Brookside Reservation, where they found blood and pocket change at the top of a hill and the body in the sewer drain at the bottom of the hill.
The teens had both been charged in April with stealing cars, cell phones, a digital camera and an iPod from Ismael’s neighbors.
Ismael is also charged in juvenile court with murder and aggravated robbery in the death of 51-year-old Daniel Higgins.
Prosecutors said Ismael and Gabriel were attempting to enter Higgin’s house in the 5800 block of Lawn Avenue in Cleveland on Aug. 17, 2007. As they were opening a window, Higgins confronted them. Ismael pulled out a gun and shot Higgins through the eye, prosecutor’s spokesman Ryan Miday said.

BY ROBIN KNEPPER Culpeper VA. OCT 4 2008
Family, friends and fellow public-safety personnel gathered yesterday to remember the impact Lake of the Woods security officer Elizabeth “Beth” Leizear made in life and death.
Leizear, 37, died Tuesday from injuries suffered in a single-car accident on Lakeview Parkway in the Orange County subdivision early Sunday.
Lake of the Woods Church Pastor Thomas Schafer commended Leizear’s “dedicated service” to the community and told of her “gift of life.”
After her accident, he said, she lay in the intensive-care unit with no hope of recovery while another family waited for a new heart for their young daughter.
“Beth gave her heart so another person could have life,” he said.
Along with family and community members, the service was attended by officers from Dodson Security and LOW Fire and Rescue personnel. John Leizear, her husband, is a volunteer firefighter for the LOW unit.
The 100 or so who gathered at the Lake of the Woods Church to pay their respect also included fire and EMS personnel for Orange County, and law-enforcement officers from the county, Fredericksburg, Aquia Harbour, the National Park Service and Virginia State Police.
An honor guard from Chancellor Fire and Rescue participated in the service.
Several members of John Leizear’s family belong to the Red Knights, a motorcycle club of firefighters based in Maryland. They joined the procession of fire and rescue trucks that brought the Leizear family to the services.
In addition to her husband, Leizear is survived by two daughters, Brooke and Kaitlyn, and many other relatives in the area.

Retail security agents charged with theft scheme www.privateofficer.com
Retail security agents charged with theft scheme http://www.privateofficer.com
Who’s guarding the guards seems to be the question of the week after three different stores have had security staff charged with thefts this week.
A gang of loss prevention agents including their boss was arrested after an internal investigation at the Nordstrom’s department store in King Of Prussia PA. found that they had been stealing merchandise and refunding the items for cash.
A security manager at a Wal-Mart in Florida was also nabbed after he was found to be stealing merchandise to sell on e-Bay and on Thursday, a store security officer working at the Homewood Target store, 17605 Halsted St., was arrested and charged with felony retail theft.
Homewood police said Khandi Robinson, 22, of 612 Longwood Court, Glenwood, let several women she knew leave the Target store on two occasions with unpaid items.
Another store security agent conducting an investigation said he saw three females enter the store Sept. 6, place merchandise – including a $500 vacuum cleaner – in brown plastic tubs and exit while Robinson was working security, according to police reports.
According to the report, again on Sept. 17, two of the women came to the store. Internal investigators watched, as again the thieves concealed several items in brown plastic tubs, proceeded to the front of the store and spoke with Robinson, who was not on duty, according to police. The two women then left the store without taking the merchandise.
Thursday, the security agent noticed two women again placing various merchandise in brown tubs and exiting the store without paying while Robinson worked the front, police said.
Robinson and Amber Lang, 20, of 829 Manor Court, Glenwood, were charged with two counts of felony retail theft over $150. Robinson’s mother, Kathleen Robinson, 41, of 612 Longwood Court, Glenwood, was charged with misdemeanor retail theft.
Police are searching for the third woman.
Some retail loss prevention managers are wondering if this is the new trend? Security people stealing and letting others steal in front of their eyes. The economy may have something to do with these thefts said Jim Multue, a security manager for a Boston department store, but it’s still doesn’t justify it and it won’t be tolerated in our stores.
A Homewood Target manager, who declined to reveal his name, said the store hires security guards in-house rather than from outside sources. He declined further comment on the thefts. Nordstom’s and Wal-Mart also had no comment on their internal theft problems and arrests.

Hospital security officer, nurse assaulted by robbery suspect www.privateofficer.com
Hospital security officer, nurse assaulted by robbery suspect http://www.privateofficer.com
A Maryland man has been charged with beating an off-duty Prince William County police officer over a stolen cell phone.
The unidentified officer, who was working as a security guard at Potomac Hospital in Woodbridge, was attacked just before 10 p.m. Thursday.
The officer assists with private security when not on duty as a county officer, county police spokeswoman Erika Hernandez said.
The officer said a 43-year-old man told him someone took his cell phone while he was talking outside.
When he went to investigate, the officer saw a man talking on the phone while standing near the hospital’s emergency room entrance.
When the officer tried to get the phone back, Hernandez said, the man punched him in the face, knocking him to the ground.
The man continued to kick the officer, Hernandez said.
When the attacker saw the officer had a gun, he reached for it attempting to remove it from its holster, Hernandez said.
A 29-year-old Woodbridge man who witnessed the attack knocked the assailant off the officer before he could reach the gun.
The attacker got up and ran inside the hospital where he attacked a 31-year-old emergency room nurse by punching her in the face, Hernandez said.
The officer followed him inside and tried to handcuff the man.
It was with the help of a hospital doctor and a 50-year-old Woodbridge man that the assailant was handcuffed and arrested, Hernandez said.
Quentin Lamont Samuel, 37, of Capitol Heights, Md., was charged with assault and battery, malicious wounding of a law enforcement officer, robbery, escape by force and attempted grand larceny, said Hernandez.
He was held without bond and has a court date of Nov. 5.
The officer was treated for his injuries at the hospital. He has not returned to duty. The condition of the nurse who was punched was not available.
A spokeswoman from Potomac Hospital refused to comment on the incident and called it a police matter.
Patients and those standing outside the hospital where the attack happened were concerned.
“It’s terrible, but you can’t predict what some people will do,” said Sam Saiid of Dumfries, who was leaving the hospital after a four-day stay.
Another Woodbridge man who asked not to be identified said the hospital should increase security in light of the attack.
“You should be safe here in a hospital, but I guess this just goes to show you what people will do,” he said.
Prince William police Chief Charlie T. Deane praised the actions of the man who helped the officer during the attack.
“This incident illustrates how a routine encounter can quickly become a violent and life-threatening situation,” said Deane. “The good Samaritan in all probability saved the officer’s life.”
