Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies announced on Friday that they have uncovered a massive indoor marijuana growing operation.
Authorities are calling it largest indoor marijuana growing operation in the state’s history.
Two Birmingham men were arrested during the raid and are being held in the county jail on a combined bond of $3 million.
Drug and SWAT deputies raided a warehouse at 911 41st Street North in the Kingston area of the city Thursday night, finding a sophisticated hydroponics system where plants are grown in water without dirt, said sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Randy Christian.
The system uses intense heat lamps to simulate sunlight and is capable of producing of a million dollars of marijuana each year.
Christian said the method produces a marijuana product that sells for $4,500 a pound versus the normal $1,000 per pound.
Deputies launched the investigation two months ago, Christian said but the sheriff spokesperson did not say what tipped them off.
The sheriff depaartment press release said that so far they have arrested two people who they identified as Daniel Rosser, 37 and Steven Sartino, also 37.
Rosser is charged with trafficking marijuana, with bond set at $1 million. Sartino is charged with trafficking marijuana and trafficking cocaine, with bond set at $2 million.

Teacher comes to school drunk www.privateofficer.com

Teacher comes to school drunk http://www.privateofficer.com

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. OCT 11 2008 A fifth grade Clarksville teacher was suspected on Thursday by her students of being drunk at school.
A student’s mother, who did not want to be identified, said that when her 10-year-old son came home from Barkers Mill Elementary school, she said she was shocked what he told her.
“‘Mom, I had a crazy day at school today. Ms. Potoschnik was drunk,’” the mother said that her son told her.
Her son’s classmate told his mother the same story. The students claim that on Thursday morning their teacher, Kelley Potoschnik, kept drinking something out of a cup that smelled like alcohol.
“She started acting real loopy. She stumbled over kids. She had her arm around different students saying, ‘Why don’t you come home with me tonight?’” said the mother.
After the teacher tried to send the kids to lunch an hour early, one student told another teacher. School officials confiscated the cup and sent the teacher to the hospital.
Parents received a letter that said there had been an “unacceptable incident” at school and that the children “did witness unusual behavior.”
School officials declined to say more to Channel 4 and said there were medical privacy issues that would not allow them to reveal more details. Some of the students’ parents said they want an investigation into the erratic behavior by the teacher.
“If you have a teacher strung out on alcohol or drugs, what are we teaching, as far as values with our kids?” said the mother.
Channel 4 was unable to contact the teacher. The parents describe her as very young. They said they have had other concerns about her and wonder if these symptoms are part of a larger problem.
In the letter sent home, the principal promised to give parents more information after they come back from fall break.

Woman arrested at Atlanta airport over luggage issue www.privateofficer.com

Woman arrested at Atlanta airport over luggage issue http://www.privateofficer.com

ATLANTA GA OCT 11 2008
Aliana Velazquez Rosa brought too many pieces of carry-on luggage onto her AirTran flight.
But it was Atlanta two police officers who ended up carrying Rosa — not the baggage — off the airplane.

Rosa, of Jackson Heights, N.Y., was charged Sept. 28 with criminal trespassing and taken to Clayton County Jail.
Rosa, 33, was flying from New York to San Juan, Puerto Rico, and had a connecting flight at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, said AirTran spokesman Tad Hutcheson.
She somehow got four bags past the AirTran gate agent and onto the Boeing 737 plane, which was full with nearly 140 passengers, Hutcheson said.
She put two bags in the overhead bin, and was trying to find room for the other two, Hutcheson said.
But there wasn’t enough space, and a flight attendant told Rosa that she had to either consolidate the bags or check two of them and pay a baggage fee, Hutcheson said.
AirTran and most other airlines allow passengers to bring aboard one piece of carry-on luggage and one personal item, such as a purse or laptop bag, and charge extra fees for additional baggage, AirTran spokesman Tad Hutcheson said.
Rosa apparently didn’t like any of the options and refused, according to Hutcheson and an Atlanta police report.
“Allegedly, the lady didn’t have money to pay for the second bag,” Hutcheson said. “That’s what I’m hearing.”
Several other AirTran staffers made similar requests, but all were met with the same refusal, Hutcheson said.
“She disobeyed all of the crew’s commands,” Hutcheson said.
In order to depart on time, AirTran officials called the police. She would not comply with an officer’s demand to get off the plane and lay on the floor, prompting two officers to physically remove her from the plane, the report said.
The other passengers were “getting annoyed with this passenger who was holding up the entire airplane,” Hutcheson said.
After getting out of jail, Rosa caught an AirTran flight to San Juan the next day. This time, she checked her bags, and AirTran waived her fee for switching flights, Hutcheson said.

East Point police officer arrested for aiding bank robber www.privateofficer.com

East Point police officer arrested for aiding bank robber http://www.privateofficer.com

EAST POINT, Ga. OCT 11 2008
Kyle T. Greene
NTL. ASSOC. PRIVATE OFFICERS

http://www.privateofficer.com/ An East Point police officer has been arrested for allegedly helping a serial bank robber, East Point police said.
East Point police said they arrested one of their own officers, Nicole Drane, on 15 different counts.
Drane is accused of misusing the police department’s computer to let a suspect in 12 bank robberies know if he was wanted.
Authorities said they took Drane into custody Thursday for violating her oath of office, hindering the apprehension of a suspected criminal and bribery.
The charges are related to Drane’s connection to Malik Dillard, a suspect involved in a string of bank robberies along the East Coast, including some in Georgia. Dillard told the FBI he had help from someone on the inside, according to East Point officials.
Dillard told investigators that he would call Drane after some of the robberies to see if authorities were looking for him.
“Well, it doesn’t sit very well but I have to look again, maybe they’re not paying them enough at East Point so they have to have some extracurricular activity. But no, it doesn’t sit well,” said East Point resident Michael Freeman.
Authorities said Drane is currently in custody at the Fulton County Jail.
Drane’s first court appearance was Friday at 11 a.m. Her bond was set at $450,000.

MTSU student charged with arson and threats against school www.privateofficer.com

MTSU student charged with arson and threats against school    www.privateofficer.com

the tennessean.com
MURFREESBORO(metro Nashville ) TN OCT 11 2008 — First came the fires, then the threatening e-mails that warned of “large-scale devastation” at Middle Tennessee State University.
In a post-Virginia Tech world, officials were taking no chances. They shut down classes Thursday as state, local and federal authorities descended on campus to search for and arrest a 19-year-old freshman they believe is responsible.
Justin Davis, of Antioch, will face terrorism and arson charges. He was arrested at 5 p.m. Thursday and is reportedly cooperating with authorities.
Davis’ arrest followed a day of intensified police presence on campus and the cancellation of classes for the rest of the week.
Students packed their cars to get an early start on a fall break that would have started at the end of the day today. Worried parents phoned students on campus to find out what was happening.
Other students remained on campus, unfazed by threats they say are not uncommon around exam time.
“We had one last year, but nothing was canceled quite like this,” said Kelsey Dupre, a sophomore who planned to stick around on campus during the break. “When I heard about the fires (Wednesday) night, I figured they would probably cancel classes.”
MTSU Police Chief Buddy Peaster said authorities believe Davis acted alone, but the investigation is ongoing.
“We are not going to stop looking into other possible suspects, and we’re not going to stop combing through information that we have received,” Peaster said.
University officials expressed relief that no students, faculty or staff were injured. They also thanked local, state and federal law enforcement agencies for their teamwork.
Classes remain canceled today; students will be expected to return to class on Wednesday after the scheduled fall break. University offices will maintain normal business hours.
The school, 30 miles southeast of Nashville, has a fall enrollment of about 23,900. It’s primarily a commuter university, with 3,500 living on campus in 21 residence halls and apartments. School housing was not evacuated Thursday.

Peaster said Davis was first interviewed as a possible witness in the case after police received information that his roommate might have been involved.
“After we began talking to him he became very cooperative,” Peaster said. He would not say whether Davis admitted or denied involvement.
Davis was a resident of Miss Mary Hall, where police confirmed one of the fires was set.
The Antioch home where Davis’ family reportedly lives was dark Thursday night. The blinds were closed, the lights out and no one answered the door.
A woman who answered the phone about 7 p.m. said, “We have no comment.”
Peaster said the threatening e-mails were sent between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Wednesday to him and two other police officers.
Sydney McPhee, president of the university, said one of the e-mails sent from a Yahoo account was received Wednesday by an administrator on the business faculty, threatening the entire student community with bodily harm.
Peaster said the decision to cancel classes was made by an emergency council, which included McPhee.
“We (were) erring on the side of safety because of incidents like Virginia Tech,” he said, referring to the nation’s most deadly university shooting in which more than 30 people were killed on April 16, 2007.

Officials decided not to evacuate campus Thursday before Davis’ arrest, though police presence was intensified and signs were posted at residence halls notifying students not to admit anyone they did not know.
Students had to show an ID before being allowed to enter dorm lobbies.
The FBI issued a no-fly zone over the campus while law enforcement tactical teams swept the area for a suspect or witnesses.
TBI and FBI agents confiscated some computers where the e-mails had been received.
The FBI, Department of Homeland Security, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, Murfreesboro Police Department, Rutherford County Sheriff’s Department, Rutherford County Emergency Management and MTSU Campus Police were involved in the investigation.
MTSU spokeswoman Lisa Rollins described campus Thursday afternoon as pretty quiet. Students had been taking midterm exams until classes were canceled.
Text message alerts and a mass e-mail alerted students of “a credible threat” and that classes were canceled.

Freshman Jessica Caughlins said that she was sitting in biology class when the text message came announcing classes were canceled.
“I’m really scared,” she said. “It’s creepy. I’m going home.”
Freshman Kenny Ball said he was walking into Peck Hall on Thursday unaware of what was happening. When he reached the entrance, he saw the notice that classes were canceled and the door was locked.
“I don’t even know what’s going on,” said Ball, who isn’t signed up to receive the optional text alerts, available to all MTSU students and faculty.
McPhee said there were several threats.
“There was a general threat to inflict bodily harm to some of our employees,” he said. “Two academic deans received threats. I am not aware of any staff member receiving threats.”

School resource officer terminated for having “feelings” for student www.privateofficer.com

School resource officer terminated for having “feelings” for student http://www.privateofficer.com

NEW PORT RICHEY FLA OCT 11 2008 – The school resource officer at River Ridge Middle School pulled a student out of class Wednesday and took her to an office where they were alone.
Sitting across a desk from the 13-year-old girl, authorities say, Cpl. Christopher Magavero declared: “I feel like I’m falling in love with you.”
The girl, an eighth-grader, became distraught and told a guidance counselor, who contacted the authorities.Later Wednesday, the Sheriff’s Office said, Magavero acknowledged making the statement and Sheriff Bob White fired him, citing conduct unbecoming an officer.

“We’re talking about children here, the safety of children, and this behavior is completely unacceptable,” sheriff’s spokesman Doug Tobin said.

“The sheriff felt strongly and pushed for termination.”The Sheriff’s Office is now conducting a criminal investigation to make sure nothing more occurred between Magavero, 42, and the girl.
“We have no evidence that anything physical took place, no evidence that a crime occurred at this point,” Tobin said. “But the deputy certainly committed an incredible error in judgment.”He credited the girl for how she handled the situation.”The young girl did everything right,” Tobin said. “She handled it in a really amazing way, composed way by going to a trusted person. She didn’t delay.”The criminal inquiry will be followed by an internal investigation, Tobin said, to see if any other such incidents occurred.
Investigators plan to interview other students and examine Magavero’s computers.Reached by phone Thursday, Magavero declined to comment. He joined the Sheriff’s Office in 2000 and became a school resource officer in 2004.
His personnel file contains no history of questionable behavior. On the contrary, it’s filled with letters from White and community members commending Magavero for his good work. His latest evaluation from August lauds his “professional and calming demeanor, which enhances his effectiveness as a school resource officer and as a deputy sheriff.”
Before joining the Sheriff’s Office, Magavero taught social studies at Gulf High School. He has bachelor’s degrees from the University of South Florida in mass communications and education. In his application to the Sheriff’s Office, he said he wanted to leave teaching to pursue a career in law enforcement, a profession he always revered.
River Ridge Middle principal Jason Joens sent a letter home with students Thursday, notifying parents of what happened. He called the situation unfortunate and said it had an effect on some students but most probably were unaware.
“Based upon my observations of our SRO, I always found him to be engaged in appropriate lessons and activities with students,” Joens said.He said Magavero was involved in such programs as Students Against Destructive Decisions and Paint Pasco Clean. He helped with the school’s anti-bullying and traffic safety programs.
Lizette Alexander, director of student services for Pasco schools, says they have offered assistance to both the girl who was approached and Magavero’s family. His wife is a teacher in the district, and they have a daughter in ninth grade as well as an older daughter. The school district made counselors and social workers available for River Ridge Middle, in case employees or other students needed guidance.”
I think they’re victims at all levels,” Alexander said.Magavero earned about $49,000 a year.
He will lose his accrued sick and vacation time, Tobin said, but not his state pension unless he is convicted of a crime. He has three days to appeal the firing.
“He pretty much signed off on his own fate through his statements,” Tobin said.
