Medical helicopter crashes, 4 dead http://www.privateofficer.com
The helicopter was headed to Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago from Valley West Hospital in Sandwich when it went down minutes before midnight, said Aurora police spokesman Sgt. Robb Wallers.
Children’s Memorial Hospital spokeswoman Julie Pesch initially said the child, a girl, was being transported to the hospital because of epileptic seizures. She later said the child’s symptoms were not clear.
The helicopter may have clipped a wire before it crashed and burned, according to authorities. The guide-wire came from a 750-foot tall radio tower, said assistant Fire Chief John Lehman, who added there is some concern about the tower’s structural integrity and engineers are evaluating it.
Wallers said the helicopter belonged to Air Angels Inc., an emergency medical transport service based at Clow Airport in suburban Bolingbrook. Telephone calls to the Air Angels offices were not answered early Thursday.
However, Air Angels CEO Jim Adams told the Chicago Tribune that the helicopter’s crew included the pilot, nurse and a paramedic employed by the company. He added the helicopter’s pilot did not report mechanical problems, and weather was not an issue.
According to Wallers, the helicopter crashed in a field near a residential area in east Aurora and was engulfed in flames. No one on the ground was hurt.
The Aurora crash is the third involving Air Angels helicopters. In January 2003, an Air Angels helicopter crashed killing the pilot. Investigators determined pilot error and weather caused the accident. Mechanical problems was blamed for an August 2007 crash in which there were no injuries.
It was at least the ninth fatal crash in the past 12 months across the country involving medical transport helicopters. Observers say the accident demonstrates a disturbing rise in the number of emergency air transport crashes, and wonder if a system designed to save lives may be costing them.

Tennessee is 1 of 10 states that don’t issue firearms to state agents who supervise parolees and probationers. One of the reasons is that most personnel stayed in their office and saw the people they supervised and did little or no field work.
Now that is all about to change and the state is conducting a pilot study to see if that needs to change.
As of this week, the Tennessee Board of Probation and Parole will begin introducing firearms to their staff according to spokeswoman Melissa McDonald.
Probation and parole officers in the Memphis and Jackson districts have already received law enforcement training and will begin going on rounds at the end of the month.
They will have different duties than regular probation and parole officers, including serving warrants and apprehending fugitives.
McDonald said those jobs are normally left to local law enforcement, where they may not be top priority.

Police announced the arrest of a Marine accused of multiple attacks on female joggers and walkers in the North County.
Oceanside police said Adam Lablance, 23, of Vista, was taken into custody on sexual battery charges.
In late August, authorities received 11 reports of a man approaching women in Oceanside and Vista and touching them in a sexual manner.
On several occasions, the women were lured to the man’s car, when he asked for directions. The victims reported the man was masturbating.
Police said Lablance was arrested Tuesday at 3:45 p.m., after they stopped a car that matched the description provided by victims.
He has been charged with one count of false imprisonment, six counts of sexual battery, two counts of indecent exposure and two counts of annoying a child under the age of 18. He’s being held on $170,000 bail.
Police said there may be additional victims. Anyone with information is asked to call Oceanside police at 760-435-4555 .

RIB MOUNTAIN — Three people learned Tuesday that it’s not a good idea to purchase televisions, stereo equipment and video games with a stolen check
Security personnel at Best Buy in Rib Mountain became suspicious when a group of people made a large purchase with a check at about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, loaded the merchandise into two vehicles and returned to the store to buy more, Marathon County Sheriff’s Lt. Randy Albert said. When the group attempted to make the second purchase, no one was able to produce identification showing they were the owner of the checkbook, Albert said.
The people left without the merchandise, and security was able to catch the license plate of one of the vehicles and called police, Albert said.
The deputy, thinking the group might not be done shopping, went to Wal-Mart in Rib Mountain at about 1 a.m. and located a vehicle thought to belong to one of the suspects, Albert said. After waiting about an hour, the group came out of the store with more merchandise.
Deputies reported that about $2,500 worth of merchandise was purchased with the stolen checks at the two stores, including clothing, a flat-screen television, food, home appliances, stereo equipment and video games. Police on Tuesday continued to investigate whether the group wrote other checks, Albert said.
Joana J. Castellano, 21; Ronnie L. Howard, 34; and Kristie D. Wolff, 30, were arrested on preliminary charges of theft, receiving stolen property and forgery. They are expected to make an initial appearance today in Marathon County Circuit Court.

Security guard arrested for shooting pumpkin thief http://www.privateofficer.com
In a strange twist, police also arrested the 19-year-old shooting victim on an unrelated rape charge, according to the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Department.
Both men are being held without bail and are scheduled to appear in San Joaquin County Superior Court in Manteca at 1:30 p.m. today.
The guard, Ruben Negrete, 77, of Stockton, who was working in a rural field the night of the shooting, was booked on suspicion of assault with a firearm, attempted homicide and shooting into an occupied vehicle, authorities said.
Jeremy Holderman of Tracy told deputies that he was at the pumpkin patch in the 16800 block of South Tracy Boulevard with two other people when they entered the field about 1 a.m. Sunday to steal pumpkins, said Deputy Les Garcia, a spokesman for the sheriff’s department.
They apparently heard gunshots, and all three returned to their car, a black Lincoln Navigator. As they were driving away, four shots were fired at the vehicle, and Holderman was struck in the back.
Negrete apparently saw the group stealing the pumpkins and fired about five rounds to scare them off, deputies said.
“(Investigators) still need to go back and find out whether the victim was inside or outside the car when he was shot,” Garcia said. “This time of year, we start getting a lot of thefts from fields for strawberries and pumpkins, and from orchards. This isn’t a common occurrence where someone gets shot in the process. It’s a totally unfortunate situation.”
Holderman was driven home, then taken to the hospital by his mother, according to police. The wound was not life-threatening, and he was arrested after being released from treatment.
No further details were available about the rape charge, authorities said.

Two Hispanic men knocked on the door of a home near Hollywood and Lake Mead just after 7 a.m. They claimed to be police officers. When Cole’s mother opened the door, the two men burst in. Police say they had guns, tied up Cole’s mother and her fiancé in the home, then kidnapped their six-year-old son.
Cole Puffinburger was taken by the gunman who invaded his home to rob it, in what police believe was a random attack.
Police issued an Amber Alert just after noon. The case does not fit the criteria for an Amber Alert because police do not have the description of a car, but detectives felt Cole was in enough danger to issue one.
When word of the home invasion and abduction spread, Cole’s biological father arrived at the scene. He was overwhelmed with emotion as he ran to the house.
Police say the men were looking for money. When they found none, they took Cole.
John Page’s wife was one of the first to hear the woman and go to help. Page says she had been tied up in the house, but managed to crawl out to the sidewalk, “Her hands and her mouth. She had duct tape around her mouth and she had those electrical ties tied.”
Her hands were tied behind her back. Within seconds of the first 911 call, officers arrived to immediately start searching. They went door to door, used the helicopter and patrolled, but Cole was gone.
Cole is 47 inches tall and weighs 48 pounds. He has blonde hair and blue eyes and wears silver wire glasses. He was last seen wearing a black John Cena WWE shirt, dark jeans, white socks, black tennis shoes and a black hooded sweatshirt with white and blue writing on it.
Police are asking the kidnappers to drop Cole off at a local hospital, store or police station.
Anyone with information is being asked to call 911.
