Police responding to a 911 call of a suspicious person loitering around a local firm say that when officers arrived a man ran to the rear of the law offices and at that point a bomb of some type exploded.
The explosion at the small-town law firm in northern Georgia injured at least four people Friday, and authorities including local, state, and federal are on scene investigating.
Witnesses said the blast around 10 a.m. blew out the windows at McCamy, Phillips, Tuggle & Fordham in Dalton, 26 miles southeast of Chattanooga, Tenn.
Police Lt. Bruce Frazier said the blast was caused by some type of explosive device. Investigators confirmed early this afternoon that one person, possibly the suspicious male that police chased, was found dead in the back parking lot of the building.
Bomb squads were checking for sweeping the premises for other explosives, Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokesman John Bankhead said.
Four people hurt in the explosion were in stable condition at Hamilton Medical Center, spokeswoman Emily Michael said. One of the four was being taken to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, spokeswoman Beth Frits said.
The eight-lawyer firm, founded in 1932, works out of a two-story, colonial-style house. Police cordoned off the block and shut down a post office near the law firm, which specializes in personal injury and wrongful death cases, according to its Web site. An elementary school across the street was locked down, though it wasn’t damaged.
At this time there is no indication of what type of explosives were used or the motive.

Lynnwood police have been tracking Shirley Sue Urich, 58, of Everett, since they learned of her elaborate scam where she posed as a desperate widow and managed to convince people to give her money.
“She was a very convincing con artist and would dupe people out of thousands of dollars,” Lynnwood police detective Doug Teachworth said.
He’s been tracking her case and said she has victims throughout the West Coast. Her misdeeds have attracted national media attention.Urich has been difficult to apprehend, Lynnwood police spokeswoman Shannon Sessions said. Teachworth said he acted on a hunch and distributed wanted fliers to Puget Sound area casinos in 2006 and again in March when police believed Urich scammed someone in Stanwood.
The detective believed Urich was supporting a gambling habit.
An alert security guard spotted her Thursday at the Quil Ceda Creek Casino and called Snohomish County sheriff’s deputies. Urich was jailed on several outstanding warrants for theft and parole violations.
She has had at least 19 felony convictions over the past two decades for theft, fraud and stealing.
She’s likely to face at least half a dozen additional charges — possibly more, as more victims come forward, Teachworth said.

Test bomb hits vehicle, driver lives http://www.privateofficer.com

Las Vegas NV OCT 17 2008
There were frightening moments for a driver when a large metal object fell out of the sky and hit his truck near Nellis and Las Vegas Blvd.
That object turned out to be a test bomb from a Nellis Air Force plane.
A full investigation is underway at the base after a piece of a bomb dummy unit hit that truck. The driver of that truck is okay.
The bomb weighs 25 pounds and comes in two parts.
Nellis says from preliminary indications, it appears the bomb fell from about 1,200 feet in the sky. It’s still unclear if it was pilot or mechanical error.
Colonel Dave Belote with Nellis says the dummy bomb hit the truck after landing on the base, the apparently bouncing onto Las Vegas Boulevard.
The driver of the truck was shaken up but will be okay. Nellis Air Force Base is investigating.

Teenager playing with gun kills friend http://www.privateofficer.com

ATLANTA GA OCT 17 2008 — DeKalb County police said they believe a teenager playing with a gun accidentally shot and killed a 15-year-old high school freshman Wednesday afternoon.
DeKalb County dispatchers said the shooting happened near the Eagles Run Apartments in the 2000 block of Bouldercrest Road.

Simmons was a freshman at McNair High School. “She was very sweet. She could get along with everybody,” said the victim’s friend, Minnie Trice. “It’s just not going to be the same without her.”
Police said Simmons went to the apartments to visit her boyfriend and another teenaged boy. Investigators said one of the teens picked up the gun and it somehow fired, killing Simmons.
“They didn’t do it on purpose, I know they didn’t do it on purpose,” said Trice.

“That was his girlfriend. We couldn’t even turn around to talk to his mom, he was hurting so bad. She said, ‘My son doesn’t ever cry,’ and he’s crying. He was hurting,” said neighbor Mariam Grant.

http://www.privateofficer.com/ The family of a dead elderly woman cremated her remains on a makeshift barbecue and continued collecting her retirement checks amounting to more than $25,000, authorities in Northern California said.
Ramona Allmond’s daughter and grandson were arrested Sunday on suspicion of embezzlement, elder abuse and disposing of a body without a permit.
Allmond, 84, likely died of natural causes, though investigators were still trying to determine the exact cause of death, said Tehama County sheriff’s Capt. Paul Hosler.
Allmond’s daughter, Kathleen Allmond, 50, and Allmond’s grandson, Tony Ray, 30, told investigators their relative died in December.
They left her body on her bedroom floor for a week before cremating the remains in their backyard fire pit, Hosler said.
Investigators said the two kept collecting Allmond’s monthly retirement checks, amounting to more than $25,000.
Sheriff’s Detective Richard Knox said they may have been trying to honor Allmond’s desire to die at home and be cremated.
The two were arrested after Allmond’s son grew suspicious about her whereabouts. Both were in jail in lieu of bail, with arraignment scheduled for Thursday.
The sheriff’s department said they do not yet have attorneys.

Grady Hospital employee charged with sexual assault of patient www.privateofficer.com

Grady Hospital employee charged with sexual assault of patient      www.privateofficer.com

channel2news

ATLANTA GA OCT 17 2008 — A Grady Hospital patient told police she was sexually assaulted while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
The 37-year-old alleged victim said Moses Tweneboah kissed and fondled her while she underwent treatment for a gunshot wound, and that Tweneboah forced her to do the same to him.
The patient, who had been shot in the throat, wrote a note to police detailing the alleged assault because she could not speak.
Channel 2 obtained a copy of the police report, which stated Tweneboah, 58, kissed the victim and fondled her breast without her consent.
The victim said the assault ended after Tweneboah told her he would be back for more sexual gratification.
According to the police report, Tweneboah kissed the patient on her forehead.
“It’s just utterly shocking,” said Alan Armstrong.
Armstrong couldn’t believe the allegations.
Former Grady worker Tacuma Jawara is accused of stealing Armstrong’s deceased wife’s rings when she was transported to the hospital after a violent car crash.
Armstrong said he believes the thefts and latest allegations stem from a lack of leadership at the hospital.
“Leadership drives the culture for an organization. And the people who should be most outraged by this are the 95 percent of the Grady employees who are hard working decent people. Those are the people who should be clamoring for the administration to step up and show some leadership,” said Armstrong.
A spokesperson for Grady Hospital said they conducted a background check on Tweneboah before his was hired and that it came back clean.
Tweneboah bonded out of jail. Channel 2 could not reach Tweneboah for comment. He was immediately terminated by Grady after the allegations came to light.

Alpharetta police to pay for using cars on off-duty jobs www.privateofficer.com

Alpharetta police to pay for using cars on off-duty jobs http://www.privateofficer.com

Alpharetta GA OCT 17 2008
Kyle T. Greene
NTL. ASSOC. PRIVATE OFFICERS
www.privateofficer.com
Alpharetta is requiring its police officers to pony up for use of equipment and fuel during off-duty jobs. At least one officer has argued it amounts to a new tax on law enforcement.
As of Saturday, police officers with take-home patrol cars will be required to remit 10 percent of their pay from “extra-duty jobs,” said James Drinkard, assistant city administrator.
“We are trying to get fuel costs under control,” Drinkard said.
“These officers are certified, using an Alpharetta badge, a city vehicle, and city fuel. Why should the citizens pay for the fuel they use while working extra jobs?”
Detective Corey Miller, filed a grievance protesting the policy to Public Safety Director Gary George.
In his complaint, Miller wrote that the city is essentially taxing public safety employees.
“There is a question that such a fee could be perceived that the city is doing indirectly what it cannot do directly under law,” he wrote. “By taxing off-duty employment, especially through payroll deduction, the city is indirectly receiving funds from a private person, firm or corporation. …”
Miller could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
George dismissed the complaint, and Drinkard rejected the appeal.
George said he received several complaints from residents about idling off-duty police vehicles.
“You wouldn’t believe the complaints I was getting,” George said.
“They call or e-mail and say, ‘I saw an officer at North Point Community Church. The car was in the intersection with the lights going and the motor running. Are my tax dollars going for that car?’ Now, we say ‘no,’ and they say ‘OK.’ “
Many officers supplement their income by providing security or traffic control to private businesses or organizations.
The department allows officers to take home cars under the theory that it heightens police profile and discourages crime.
That also holds true of extra jobs, said Dennis Hammock, regional director for the Fraternal Order of Police.
“The public still benefits,” Hammock said. “It deters crime.
They shouldn’t assess it all, but if they do, it should only be mileage to and from the job location.”
The cities of Suwanee and Holly Springs assess similar fees, and Gwinnett and Cherokee counties are considering them, according to an internal Alpharetta police memo.
Officers generally earn $25 an hour on off-duty jobs, the memo said. Drinkard said the money will go directly into the city General Fund.
Initially, Alpharetta officials contemplated charging officers a per-mile fee for use of vehicles outside city business, which would have applied to driving cars to and from work, Drinkard said. Police captains suggested the flat 10 percent because it would have less impact on the officers and be easy to track.
The idea has merit, though it no doubt rankles the police officers, said Frank Rotondo, executive director of the Georgia Chiefs of Police Association.
“It’s a benefit to have take-home cars. I’m sure the officers don’t like the policy,” Rotondo said.
