Nearly 100 copies of unreleased sequels to two popular video games were recovered this week after they were stolen from Technicolor for sale on the black market.
A Technicolor employee has been charged with theft, and another man is under investigation.
A Technicolor security worker reported the theft of games for Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and also a number of DVDs on Wednesday
The games, “Gears of War II” and “Fable II,” haven’t been released to the public. Neither have some of the missing DVDs.
According to its Web site, Technicolor provides disc and game packaging, warehousing, distribution and production at its facility at 4155 E. Holmes.
An investigation led Memphis police detectives to Technicolor employee Rodney Gray, according to a police affidavit.
Detectives watched Gray leave his room Thursday at the InTown Suites, 3533 Hickory Hill, with a red bag.
They pulled him over for several outstanding driving offenses and found 31 games in the bag.
Detectives went back to the room and found a number of games and DVDs there. He told them he works at Technicolor and took the games and DVDs to sell, the affidavit states.
Developer Epic Games bills “Gears of War II” as the sequel to a “third-person tactical action game” featuring “reluctant war hero” Marcus Fenix. It’s scheduled for release Nov. 7.
“Fable II” offers players the chance “to live the life they choose in an unimaginably open world environment,” according to developer Lionhead Studios. It’s scheduled for release Tuesday.
Officers recovered a total of 97 copies of the games, according to the affidavit. Another 807 DVDs were confiscated. All together, the games and DVDs were valued at more than $100,000.
It’s unclear how many of the games and DVDs were sold on the street.
A Technicolor spokeswoman in Memphis was unable to immediately provide more details on the theft or Gray’s employment history Friday morning, then didn’t return calls.
Gray, 43, is accused of theft of property worth $60,000 or more. He’s also accused of driving on a suspended license.
A police report obtained Friday also lists another man who’s being investigated for selling games stolen from Technicolor, but he hasn’t been charged.

Memphis TN OCT 22 2008
A Memphis police officer shot and killed a man who police say was resisting arrest after a foot chase early today near the Memphis International Airport
An investigation is continuing, and police wouldn’t say whether the man was armed.
A FedEx security officer chased the suspect on foot after he was seen about 1 a.m. possibly prowling around cars at the FedEx facility on Tchulahoma, police said.
Officers were nearby on an undercover detail in an effort to catch people breaking into cars.
They saw the guard chasing the man near Independent and Tchulahoma, and joined in the foot chase, which ended a tenth of a mile away at Democrat and Tchulahoma.
The suspect resisted efforts to handcuff him, police said, and as the struggle continued, an officer fired one shot that struck the suspect.
The 24-year-old man died at the scene. His identity hasn’t been released pending notification of relatives.
According to department policy, deadly force can be used only “in self-defense or defense of others where either the officer or a third party has been attacked or threatened with deadly force, in danger of serious bodily injury or death,” MPD spokeswoman Monique Martin wrote in an E-mail.
Martin wouldn’t say whether police believe the shot was fired intentionally.
The officer, who is 41 and a 10-year veteran, has been relieved of duty pending a full investigation. He is assigned to the uniform patrol division at the Mt. Moriah Station.

The search has expanded into the open waters of the Potomac River as far south as Charles County. Tides may have pulled his body farther out.
Everything from sonar to beacons is being used to find the officer.
“We’ve used some shallow water boats along with some different sonars. There’s a side sonar and a sector sonar that we have been employing throughout the night,” Fairfax County Police spokesman Eddy Azcarate said.
Coast Guard, FBI and Fairfax County helicopters are being used.
“The helicopters have been tracking the beacon that was dumped in the water yesterday to help analyze the currents and possible avenues of where he may have been pushed along,” Azcarate says.
The 42-year-old officer failed to resurface during a diving exercise Tuesday. The exercise started around 1:30 p.m., and the officer went missing around 2:45 p.m.
Police are not identifying the officer who has been with the department 19 years.
People living near the area are asked to report any possible sightings.

NTL. ASSOC. PRIVATE OFFICERS
www.privateofficer.com— A security officer hired to protect Wal-Mart is now accused of masterminding a robbery of his employer.
Police say that they have rounded up four men including the loss prevention agent who face charges of aggravated robbery for allegedly pulling a botched heist Sept. 25 at the Wal-Mart on 13502 South Hamilton View Road.
During the investigation, witnesses told the police they thought the two men were nephews of the night-time loss-prevention officer identified as Vainga Imoana Kinikini, 34, of Salt Lake City. Police say that one of the others arrested told police that the security officer had planned the robbery with several others and told the men where to find the money and hot to get into the cash office.
According to charges filed Tuesday in 3rd District Court, Latutaofieiki Fakaosiula, 20, of West Jordan, was talking on his cell phone as two Wal-Mart employees emptied registers and took the cash to the back office. Fakaosiula hung up his phone, and Eric Kamahele, 21, of Cottonwood Heights, and Mataika Kimoana Tuai, 19, of Salt Lake City, entered the store and intercepted the employees as they were leaving the office.
The men told the employees to open the door to a second cash office, where a third Wal-Mart employee was working, the charges state. The employees knocked on the door, but the other employee saw what was happening and locked the door.
Kamahele and Tuai ran out of the office, and Fakaosiula then fled the store
Kamahele and Tuai both face three counts of aggravated robbery, first-degree felonies. Kinikini and Fakaosiula both face one count of aggravated robbery, also a first-degree felony.
