LORTON, Va. OCT 22 2008 — Search teams have expanded their search for a Fairfax County police officer missing in the waters of Pohick Bay.
The search has expanded into the open waters of the Potomac River as far south as Charles County. Tides may have pulled his body farther out.
Everything from sonar to beacons is being used to find the officer.
“We’ve used some shallow water boats along with some different sonars. There’s a side sonar and a sector sonar that we have been employing throughout the night,” Fairfax County Police spokesman Eddy Azcarate said.
Coast Guard, FBI and Fairfax County helicopters are being used.
“The helicopters have been tracking the beacon that was dumped in the water yesterday to help analyze the currents and possible avenues of where he may have been pushed along,” Azcarate says.
The 42-year-old officer failed to resurface during a diving exercise Tuesday. The exercise started around 1:30 p.m., and the officer went missing around 2:45 p.m.
Police are not identifying the officer who has been with the department 19 years.
People living near the area are asked to report any possible sightings.
You can reach police at 703-691-2131.
