Railroad police shoot armed man www.privateofficer.com

Railroad police shoot armed man http://www.privateofficer.com

PORTLAND, Ore. OCT 27 2008 — A railroad police officer shot a wanted man Saturday after a foot chase near railroad tracks in north Portland, authorities said.
A BNSF Railway Company police officer spotted the man at around 3:53 p.m. near North Portland Road and North Columbia Boulevard.
The officer began a foot chase after learning the man was wanted on an outstanding warrant, authorities said. Officers from the Portland Police Bureau responded to help and they tracked the man to a transient camp about one mile away.
Police said the man approached the railroad officer and two Portland officers while he was armed with a weapon in one hand and a gas can in the other appeared the man had an igniting device and was lighting the can on fire, police said. He dropped the can and charged the officers while still armed with his weapon, leading the railroad officer to fire his gun and the Portland police officer to deploy his Taser, according to the Portland Police Bureau.
The man was immediately taken to Legacy Emanuel Hospital with gunshot injuries that didn’t appear to be life-threatening, police said.
The gas can caught fire, but police were able to extinguish it.
Susan Adams said she was bicycling through the area when she heard the commotion.
“I heard what I thought was some trains coming together in a crash, but I was thinking it was just a crash or some sort of car accident,” Adams said. “But a shooting is a whole other story. That’s definitely a scary thing to hear.”
The officers involved weren’t injured and homicide detectives from the Portland Police Bureau were called in to investigate.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call 503-823-0400.

Armored truck disappears, police question guards www.privateofficer.com

Armored truck disappears, police question guards http://www.privateofficer.com

FAYETTEVILLE AR OCT 27 2008 – Police say that an armored truck disappeared from one of its stops in Fayetteville Saturday only to turn up a few hours later, across town at an elementary school.
Fayetteville police say they received a call around one oclock Saturday afternoon that an armored vehicle had been stolen from outside the Office Max in Fayetteville.
According to witnesses, two male employees had been delivering money in the armored vehicle and were nearing the end of their route, and the end of their money supply, when they reached OfficeMax. They say the vehicle’s driver sat in the car while the other man took a bag of money inside. When he returned, witnesses say the armored car and the driver had both disappeared, in a matter of minutes.
Police found the armored car at Owl Creek Elementary, but have not confirmed if they’ve found the truck’s driver. Authorities have not released how much money was in the truck, although at the time of the incident, the truck was on it’s next-to-last delivery, and they don’t believe there was a great deal of money left inside.
If you have any information about this case you can call Northwest Arkansas CrimeStoppers at 1-877-842-8200. You can remain anonymous and could be elligible for a cash reward.

On-duty firefighter stops and buys liquor at Walgreens www.privateofficer.com

On-duty firefighter stops and buys liquor at Walgreens http://www.privateofficer.com

Albuquerque NM OCT 27 2008
A Walgreens security guard said he couldn’t believe his eyes when a uniformed firefighter pulled up in a firetruck and proceeded to buy booze.
Video taken from store security cameras shows the firefighter walking out with two bottles of Seagram’s Gin and Everclear Vodka. Security guard David Sandoval said he and others in the store noticed the firefighter was still on duty when making the purchase.
Sandoval said the firefighter didn’t seem to care he was breaking the rules.
“He seemed not to even mind what he was doing, because apparently he just did it, knowing that he was being videotaped,” Sandoval said.
The guard said other customers in line were starting to get upset because a public servant shouldn’t buy alcohol while on duty and in uniform.
The firefighter told his superiors he was buying the alcohol for the next day.
AFD Chief Robert Ortega said the October 4 incident led to a 30-day suspension for the firefighter, who is an 11-year veteran.
Chief Ortega said the same firefighter was in trouble a few years ago for padding his time sheet. He was fired, but the city’s personnel board gave him his job back.
“I was kind of disappointed to see that, but it’s my understanding that he was trying to buy it for the following day, but there’s a proper time for everything,” Sandoval said.
The firefighter signed an agreement stating that if he breaks the rules again, he’ll be fired. He returns to work on Nov. 9.

It only took about two minutes to stop the fight after the pepper spray was unleashed by a school security officers but before that it was an all out brawl.
About a dozen students started throwing punches in the cafeteria of Sarah T. Reed High School in the New Orleans Recovery School District.
All told, about thirty students were involved. The brawl, an outgrowth of gang-related hostilities a day or so before, started during lunch when around 500 students were in the area according to authorities.
Eddie Compass, director of security for the school district, said a school security officer sprayed several students to interrupt the melee. To the best of his knowledge, no students were actually struck in the eyes by the spray, but about twenty were hit or stung.
According to school officials, there were about eight additional students not directly involved in the fracas who were affected by the substance.
Senior Rhondra Hunter said she was punched by a student, then accidentally hit in the face by the spray. EMT and police personnel responded to the fracas and those sprayed were treated. First responders from the fire department were already on the scene because of a fire alarm.
Compass said the officer used the pepper spray to stop the fight from spreading. “It’s justified when an officer feels that he is in danger, and others are in danger.”
School official ssaid that students are being disciplined but that there was no arrests.

NJ Correction officer commits suicide after killing wife, dog www.privateofficer.com

NJ Correction officer commits suicide after killing wife, dog http://www.privateofficer.com

trentonian.com
PEMBERTON TWP. NJ OCT 27 2008— A 15-year veteran corrections officer at New Jersey State Prison shot and killed his wife, then his dog and then himself Wednesday inside their home here in the Browns Mills section.
Police identified him as Victor Segui-Cordero, 59. His wife was named Nelda Segui, also 59. Their bodies were found by their son, Erick X. Segui of Browns Mills, who called police to their home in the 300 block of Lakeview Boulevard at 9:25 p.m.
“The preliminary police investigation revealed that Victor Segui-Cordero shot his wife and the family dog then turned the gun on himself,” township police Detective Lt. Ronald Kreig said. “The weapon and a handwritten note were collected at the scene confirming what had taken place.”Authorities wouldn’t comment on the contents of the suicide note.
Locals contacted Wednesday night said they didn’t know happened but assumed a major homicide investigation was under way.
“There’s so many police cars over there and helicopters in the sky,” a woman who lives around the block on Auburn Avenue said an hour after police converged here to probe the homicide-suicide.“I’m just sad something like this happened.
This is really scary. This is a really quiet neighborhood. You have kids stealing bikes and stuff like that, but nothing like this.”Authorities wouldn’t discuss why Segui-Cordero went on his rampage. “We’re not aware of any difficulty he had,” said Deirdre Fedkenheuer, spokeswoman for the New Jersey Department of Corrections.
“It’s just a tragic situation.”She said Segui-Cordero earned $72,000 as a senior corrections officer. He first started in state employ as a human services assistant April 6, 1992, and came to the DOC on Oct. 2, 1993, as a corrections officer recruit.
His union, PBA Local 105, had no comment, but a member who answered the phone yesterday said, “It’s kind of tough to talk about it. The family is still grieving right now.”According to reunion.com, Victor Segui-Cordero previously lived in Silver Spring, Md., Yukon, Okla., and Trenton, before buying the house in Browns Mills in 1998.

S.C. woman awarded $3million for false accusations from Target www.privateofficer.com

S.C. woman awarded $3million for false accusations from Target http://www.privateofficer.com

GREENVILLE, S.C. OCT 27 2008 — A federal jury in Greenville ordered Target to pay a woman $3 million on Thursday for not accepting her $100 bills and wrongly accusing her of using counterfeit cash.
Court documents stated that Rita Cantrell of Greer went to two Target stores in the Greenville area in Feb. 2006, and both times employees accused her of using a counterfeit bill.
Cantrell tried to buy items at the store and pay with an older series $100 bill

The bill was real, police said. But a store employee sent out an e-mail to dozens of other retailers and law enforement agencies warning them that Cantrell was a shoplifter who tried to spend bogus cash. The e-mail also included Cantrell’s picture.
The U.S. Secret Service questioned Cantrell at her workplace, but later determined the bill was authentic.
“Rita Cantrell found out about that mass e-mail because it was sent to where she works, which is Belk. Federal agents actually interrogated her at the store and her co-workers knew why,” Cantrell’s attorneys said in a statement.
Cantrell’s attorneys said that her embarrassment, humiliation and mental suffering led to a lawsuit against Target Corporation, alleging libel as a result of a defamatory email and negligence because the target store employee wrote and sent the e-mail without substantial proof of wrongdoing.
After a three-day trial, the jury sided in Cantrell’s favor, awarding her $100,000 for actual damages and $3 million in punitive damages.
“The Plaintiff is pleased and feels vindicated by the result,” Cantrell’s attorneys said. “She did not bring her case to create publicity but to obtain just compensation and to clear the taint which had been unfairly attached to her image and her good name.”
Target spokeswoman Bethany Zucco said Friday the company will challenge the ruling.
“We are extremely disappointed by the magnitude of the compensatory and punitive damages awarded by the jury in this case,” Zucco said in a statement. “We sincerely regret any inconvenience incurred by the plaintiff. However, we do not believe that the $200 in medical expenses submitted as evidence in this case supports a $100,000 compensatory damage award, nor do we believe that punitive damages were appropriate under these circumstances.”

A 27-year-old Hilton Head Island man faces several charges for allegedly using his three nieces to help him shoplift from a department store, according to a Beaufort County sheriff’s report released Tuesday.
Frederico Najera-Moreno of Spanish Wells Road was charged with shoplifting, unlawful neglect by a legal custodian and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
He also is being held for federal Immigrations & Customs Enforcement agents, who suspect he is an illegal immigrant.
Officers charged Najera-Moreno at about 1 p.m. Friday at Belk, 24 Shelter Cove Lane, after a security guard watched him stuff a pair of shorts in his pants, the report said.
Soon after, deputies were called back to Belk when two children with an infant were seen wandering around the store looking for Najera-Moreno.
The children — ages 13 and 11 — told officers they hid clothing in a stroller and put some of the items in their uncle’s car, the report said.
The stolen items were worth $766.
Beaufort County Family Court will handle the shoplifting charge against the 13-year-old girl.

WESTFIELD, Mass.OCT 27 2008 – Authorities are investigating the shooting death of an 8-year-old boy who died after accidentally shooting himself in the head while firing an Uzi submachine gun under adult supervision at a gun fair.

Christopher was with a certified instructor and “was shooting the weapon down range when the force of the weapon made it travel up and back toward his head, where he suffered the injury,” a police statement said.
Police called it a “self-inflicted accidental shooting.”The boy was taken to Baystate Medical Center where he died.
