Fake officers and chaplains going to military homes http://www.privateofficer.com
FORT CAMPBELL, KY NOV 2 2008– On Thursday, October 30, a military family member reported two men pretending to be a casualty notification officer and chaplain visited her home and falsely notified her that her deployed Soldier had been killed.
The man impersonating the notification officer was wearing a Class A “dress green” uniform and the other was wearing civilian clergy attire.
There have been a few incidents of this nature in the past two months involving family members living off post, but Thursday’s incident occurred on post. The spouse did not allow the pair into her home and when they left contacted the Family Readiness Support Assistant and Rear Detachment Commander to confirm the information. The command let her know her spouse is still alive and worked to put him in contact with her as soon as possible. Military police were notified and a police report was taken at the scene.
Before Soldiers deploy, they and their families are offered a series of briefings to prepare for the separation. One of those briefings is about the casualty notification process. When a Soldier dies, a notification officer and military chaplain, both in Class A uniform, not civilian clergy attire, are sent to notify the next of kin in person. Family members can confirm the information with the Soldier’s unit. Typically, the notification team will not leave the family member’s home until a friend, another family member or arrives to assist.
Anyone with information about the false notification incidents are encouraged to contact Fort Campbell Police at (270) 798-2677. Anyone who believes they are being falsely notified should call 911 to alert local police immediately

Shoplifting suspects resist arrest, get Tasered http://www.privateofficer.com
BROOKSVILLE FLA NOV 2 2008 – Two men, including a suspect who was Tasered in the head, were arrested Wednesday on suspicion of resisting arrest with violence.
Around 5 p.m., Deputy Wayne Peterson was on his way to Coastal Way Shopping Plaza to investigate a possible shoplifting at Linens N’ Things. Peterson said he spotted the suspect riding a bicycle in front of Circuit City, so he pulled over to talk.
The suspect, Shaughn Lopez, briefly talked with Peterson before re-mounting his bicycle and attempting to ride away, a report states. Peterson pinned Lopez with his body against a nearby retention wall and attempted to radio for backup, a report states.
Lopez broke free, then tripped and fell nearby. When he stood back up, Lopez was clenching his fists and posturing for a fight, so Peterson fired his stun gun to control him, a report states.
One of the prongs struck Lopez on the right side of the head and the other missed, diminishing the effectiveness of the stun gun, a report states.

It took three cycles of electricity to bring Lopez into submission. In addition to resisting with violence, Lopez, 37, was additionally charged with battery on an officer and resisting arrest without violence. He was not charged with shoplifting.
Earlier Wednesday, around 11 a.m., an off-duty deputy began following a black Nissan that was towing a golf cart reported stolen out of Inverness three weeks ago, a report states.
On-duty deputies were on their way to Foxfire Road to assist when the suspect noticed he was being followed and bailed out of the pickup and ran into the woods, a report states. Deputy Dane Jenkins was one of three deputies who searched the neighborhood and found the suspect, Michael Mavrakis, pacing inside a garage, a report shows.
When Jenkins asked the suspect for identification, Mavrakis attempted to run inside the house so the deputy grabbed him by his T-shirt, a report states. Mavrakis turned and punched Jenkins’ left shoulder, so Jenkins used his stun gun to jolt the suspect into submission, a report states.
Mavrakis, 27, was charged with resisting arrest with violence, possession of stolen property, possession of methamphetamine and driving on a suspended license.

Fleeing shoplifter may have drowned in river http://www.privateofficer.com
Eugene OR NOV 2 2008
registerguard.com Police say one of two things happened to a suspected shoplifter who pedaled away from Valley River Center security guards Thursday night and jumped into the chilly waters of the nearby Willamette River to avoid capture.
Either he found his way to a riverbank and went home drenched, or he sank to the bottom of the Willamette and died.
John Miller, who coordinates search and rescue operations for the Lane County Sheriff’s Office, said he’s not sure which scenario is more likely.
“He could have got out of the river — there was the potential for that, especially since it happened at night,” Miller said.
“But there’s also the possibility that he drowned.”
Marine deputies from the sheriff’s office joined Eugene police and medics for the initial search.
It began minutes after police said the man jumped off his bicycle after eluding mall security guards who believe he tried to steal a bracelet and a pair of shoes from Macy’s.
Witnesses last saw the man just before 9 p.m. Thursday, trying to swim across the river.
Officials searched several hours for him with no luck.
Miller said a dive team from the sheriff’s office is likely to return to the scene this weekend, to see if a body can be recovered.
Eugene police spokeswoman Melinda Kletzok said investigators were unable to identify the man, who dropped a backpack during his bicycle trip between the mall and the river.
“This started as a shoplifting case, and if he didn’t come up from the water, those are dire consequences,” Kletzok said.
Witnesses described the man as white and in his 40s. He has long, dark hair and stands about 6 feet, 1 inch tall.
He wore a dark baseball cap, a dark jacket over a white shirt and dark jeans during the incident.
Kletzok said mall security guards recovered the shoes that the man allegedly tried to steal, but did not get back the bracelet.
Anyone with information about the man’s identity can call police at 682-5111.
