Azle officials plan to present a case to the district attorney’s office Friday against a former teacher accused of making a sexual advance on a student at a high school athletic facility, police said.
The woman, Julianna Sauls, 38, of Azle turned herself in Wednesday to Tarrant County authorities on warrants for suspicion of sexual assault and improper relationship between an educator and a student. Both are second-degree felonies.
Parker County deputies initiated a similar investigation Thursday into at least one other similar incident involving Sauls, Sheriff Larry Fowler said.
Sauls bonded out from the Tarrant County Jail shortly after she turned herself in Wednesday. A message left at a telephone listing for her in Azle was not returned.
At the time of the incident, the 18-year-old involved was Sauls’ student at Azle Christian School, a private school not associated with the school district, said Police Chief Steve Myers.
He said the charges stem from the fact that she was his teacher at the time of the incident, not his age.
Sauls has since been removed from the school’s staff, according to Myers.
The student, a member of the school’s six-man football team, was at an informal practice at unaffiliated Azle High School when the incident occurred, he told police.
Myers said police believe Sauls showed up at the practice intending to seduce him.
She approached him and there was sexual contact, Myers said, but the student soon put a stop to it.
“After the first few seconds of what was going on, he regained his composure enough to realize this was not proper and removed himself,” Myers said.
The incident happened outdoors in a parking lot at the facility, and he got into a car and quickly left the area after putting a stop to Sauls’ advance, Myers said.
He said the student and his father reported to the incident to Azle police Oct. 28.
“You have a trust situation there between the student and the teacher and very often they’re afraid to bring this type of thing forward,” Myers said.
Sauls has a valid teaching certificate from the State Board of Education valid through September 2013 for teaching fourth through eight grades. She doesn’t have a criminal history in Parker or Tarrant counties, according to court records.
Myers said the incident has drawn a significant amount of attention to the community since Sauls’ arrest.
“Your schools define you and Azle is one of those kinds of places where your kids are the centerpoints of most things,” Myers said. “This wasn’t a public school situation, but its student-teacher, and that raises people’s interest
“It angers them — and it should.”
