The holidays are upon us and during this time of year law enforcement across the country sees an increase in home and business burglaries.
This spike is often caused by several factors including citizens who store holiday gifts, cash, and other valuables in their homes during the Christmas holiday season and burglars who are aware of these things taking advantage of you.
Crimes like these are often “Crimes of Opportunity” meaning that if a thief sees merchandise in a vehicle, he’ll smash a window or pry a car door to get to those items.
Or if the same thief walks or drives by a home that looks to be an easy target, he’ll strike there. Most of these criminals have no preference between a house, a car, or a business; it’s just a matter of which one looks like an easier score for them.

Home Burglary Prevention Tips
Each year in the U.S, there are more than five million home burglaries. The majority of home burglaries can be prevented. The risk of being burglarized can be greatly reduced by taking simple steps to make your home more difficult to enter and less enticing to would-be burglars. So here’s a few secuiryt tips that you can use to help make your home a less likely target. Here are a few tips to help make your home less vulnerable to a burglar.

DOORS:
1.
All exterior entry doors should be made of solid metal or wood.
2. Check to make sure that door hinges are protected from removal from the outside.
3. Check the door frames to see if it’s strong enough and tight enough to preventing forcing it open. (Example: Body force, kicking it in.)
4. Inspect all exterior door locks to see if they are working properly.
5. The door strike plate screws should be 3 ½” or 4” long and screwed into the door frame for extra security.
WINDOWS:
1. Check to make sure all of your windows have locks in good working order.
2. Add window pins to help secure the window from being lifted passed a desired level.
3. Your storm windows should lock from the inside.
4. Check to make sure your windows are not blocked by outside landscape. This makes it easier for burglars to hide.
GARAGE:
1
. Close your garage door(s) whether you are home or away.
2. While working in the backyard don’t leave the overhead door open in the front.
3. Cover your garage windows so a burglar cannot see what’s inside.
LIGHTING:
1.
All exterior entrances should be lighted with at least a 40watt light.
2. Check all the exterior lights and replace those that are out before the weather gets bad.
3. Remove dirt and debris from all light fixtures to maximize the lighting.
4. Try exterior dusk to dawn light fixture.
5. Use interior light timers on some of your interior lamps and radio/T.V. This will help light the inside of your house if you get home late and it gives the impression that someone is home.
ALARM SYSTEMS:
Alarm systems vary from company to company. Check with your alarm company to make sure you are operating the system correctly. If there is any type of malfunction contact your alarm company for repairs right away.
Always set your alarm when you leave the house.
If your have a alarm company yard sign make sure it is visible in your front yard.
Advise the alarm company to call the Police Dept. first, (then, the owner, a relative or trusted neighbor) if your alarm goes off. This will help speed up response time to the burglar alarm

University of Illinois police say that an alert library security officer help them to capture a convicted sex offender who was found to be sheltering himself at a campus library.
University of Illinois police Lt. Roy Acree said Eric J. Kaminski, 21, who gave a Champaign address, was discovered about 2:30 a.m. Thursday at the Undergraduate Library, 1402 W. Gregory Drive, U. by security officers.
A few days earlier, a security officer had found a blanket and some property, including some items stolen from the library, and notified university police Acree said.
Library security believes Kaminski had been living in the library behind movable bookshelves in the northeast corner of the building, Acree said.
Police found Kaminski and determined he had been staying in the library, but at this time are unsure how long he’d been there the lieutenant said.
Police seized a bag containing audiovisual cables and a signal-splitter.
A folding knife with a 3-inch blade and a sex offender registration form with Kaminski’s name also were found in Kaminski’s possession, Acree said.
Kaminski was convicted of a sex crime in Michigan, the lieutenant said.
Champaign County court records show Kaminiski was arrested by Champaign police and pleaded guilty in June to a felony charge of failure to register as a sex offender. On June 19, Kaminski was sentenced to two years of probation, according to court records. Acree said it is not uncommon for homeless people to use campus buildings.
“When the weather starts getting colder, they will start looking for shelter,” Acree said. “It’s a big campus with a lot of buildings with nooks and crannies. Homeless people will sleep overnight.”

Internet car scammer arrested in Dallas www.privateofficer.com

Internet car scammer arrested in Dallas http://www.privateofficer.com

Dallas TX NOV 14 2008
An anonymous tip led police this morning to a fugitive who may have scammed as many as 30 people out of high-end cars advertised on Craigslist and other Web sites.
Crime Stoppers received the tip this morning, and Dallas and Fort Worth officers quickly conducted the raid without incident, authorities said. In addition to Mr. Assane, they found three stolen cars, including a BMW and a Nissan Altima.
“We appreciate the public’s help in getting this guy back in custody,” said Dallas police auto theft Sgt. David Landry.
On Sept. 24, Dallas police arrested Mr. Assane on theft charges after he drove a stolen Audi away from a meeting with his probation officer. And though he admitted scamming cars from about 30 people, authorities soon released him on $10,000 bail.
Police believe Mr. Assane — a U.S. citizen who police say emigrated from the Ivory Coast as a youth — has scammed several others since then, and there are warrants for him in Dallas, Tarrant and Collin counties.
When arrested in September, Mr. Assane had been serving 10 years probation for car scams.
Police say he has responded to ads placed on the Internet, posing as an SMU student with a wealthy father. They say he took the sellers to banks and convinced them that wire money transfers had taken place to get them to give up their cars and titles.

Health System Trainer Investigated For Nude Photos Of Clients www.privateofficer.com

Health System Trainer Investigated For Nude Photos Of Clients http://www.privateofficer.com

SPRINGFIELD MO NOV 15 2008 — A St. John’s Hospital health system trainer lost his job and is under criminal investigation. A police officer wrote in a court document that the man admitted secretly taking videos of St. John’s female clients, including one minors, while they were nude.
A source who asked to remain anonymous because he’s not authorized to release the information says the 29-year-old former employee primarily worked at the Health Tracks Facility on South Fremont Avenue. The court document doesn’t say if police think the videotaping occurred at that facility.
Police wrote in a search warrant document that they believe four women were videotaped while nude during weigh-ins.
On Oct. 28, hospital security officers were made aware of the allegations.
“As soon as there were reports of something inappropriate, (we) immediately called the police,” said a prepared statement from St. John’s.
Security officers told Springfield police that the trainer instructed women athletes to weigh themselves nude in order to obtain a more accurate weight. Security officers told police that it’s not normal practice to have anyone weigh in naked.
Springfield police later visited the trainer’s home. The search warrant affidavit says the former trainer admitted to the videotaping and said the women were aged 20, 19, and 23.
During a search of the man’s home, police say they found two videotapes in the kitchen trashcan, with the tape pulled out of the cassette. The former trainer later called police, they say, and admitted there was another athlete whom he taped nude — a 16-year-old girl.
No charges are filed yet; the prosecuting attorney’s office has yet to see a probable cause statement from police and other evidence that would help prosecutors decide what crimes to charge.
Police wrote in the search warrant report that the man could face second-degree invasion of privacy charges. If the fourth victim is a minor, he could also face federal charges of making and possessing child pornography.

Madera County sheriff’s deputies patrolling the Oakhurst area say that they have arrested a man who was posing as a security officer but they don’t know what his intent was yet.
Brodrick Gene McDaniels, 52, of Fresno, was taken into custody by a sheriff’s deputy after he conducted a traffic stop and spotted a loaded shotgun in the vehicle.
McDaniels said he was working for a security firm when he was arrested Thursday night but deputies could not confirm that and aren’t sure that it’s true.
Deputies said McDaniels told them he was heading to Yosemite High School to patrol the campus. But deputies learned his driver’s license was suspended, and his registration had expired in June 2007.
They also found a loaded pistol-grip shotgun partially hidden beneath clothing in his vehicle.
He was booked into Madera County Department of Corrections on suspicion of carrying a loaded firearm.

MD. police arrest firefighter for arson www.privateofficer.com

MD. police arrest firefighter for arson http://www.privateofficer.com

Langley Park MD NOV 15 2008
WashingtonPost.com
The Prince George’s County fire department arrested one of its own last night, alleging that a veteran county firefighter stopped on his way to work and ignited a blaze two weeks ago that he and others were soon called out to fight.
County fire investigators say Michael D. Murphy, 42, of the 400 block of Cross Creek Dr. in Huntingtown, stopped at a Langley Park area Asian Carry Out on Nov. 1, walked behind the restaurant and lighted a stack of boxes and newspapers. He then drove to the county’s Chillum-Adelphi Fire/EMS Station, where the call came in minutes later to respond to the blaze, which was extinguished before the building was destroyed, fire officials said.
Murphy was caught on the restaurant’s security camera, said Mark Brady, a spokesman for the department. He was charged last night with first-degree and second-degree arson, as well as malicious burning. All three are felonies, and Murphy is being held in the county’s jail on $150,000 bond.
A message left at Murphy’s home was not immediately returned.
“He was caught in the act, almost, on a store security camera,” Brady said. “Regardless of who you are or what you do for a living, we will investigate and prosecute to the fullest extent of the law.” Brady said Murphy was placed on administrative leave without pay following his arrest
Lai Yang, an employee at the Asian Carry Out, in the 2500 block of University Boulevard, said she and the restaurant’s owner reviewed the tape and saw a man walk behind the restaurant.
“My boss saw it and first thought [the firefighter] saw the blaze and came to check it out. He knew he was a guy from the fire department,” Yang said.
Yang said the blaze damaged the restaurant’s roof and burned stacks of menus, as well as boxes behind the building. Brady said the department had estimated the cost of the damage to be about $1,000.
Murphy joined the county fire department in 1989. In 2004, he was placed on probation after pleading guilty to a charge of theft — the least of several dropped charges stemming from an alleged scheme involving stolen credit cards.
A source close to the arson investigation said the fire department had fired Murphy in 2004 because of the credit card allegations and theft conviction. His job was later restored through labor arbitration, the source said.
If convicted on all three charges, Murphy could face maximum penalties totaling $85,000 or 55 years in jail.

NKU fight leads to attempt murder charge www.privateofficer.com

NKU fight leads to attempt murder charge http://www.privateofficer.com

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS KY NOV 15 2008 — An 18-year-old man who police said fired a gunshot in a dormitory at Northern Kentucky University during a fight with another man has been charged with attempted murder.
University police said Timothy A. Stone got into a fight with the other man in a female student’s room in James P. Callahan Residence Hall early Wednesday morning. The Kentucky Enquirer reports that the other man, Jody Wright, an ex-boyfriend of the student, was not hurt.
Witnesses told police that Stone, of Cincinnati, pulled a .25-caliber pistol out during the struggle and fired. The bullet went out a window. “He held it to the victim’s head and we believe attempted to use it,” University Police Chief Harold Todd said.
Todd said Wright wrested the gun from Stone, and then the two men, who were not students, and the female fled. Todd says Wright threw the gun in the Ohio River.
A student called 911 after hearing a gunshot. Officers searched the dorm, viewed surveillance tapes and interviewed witnesses soon after the call, Todd said.
The university said in a statement that campus police “sought the most serious charges possible under the circumstances.” Stone was also charged with first-degree wanton endangerment. The female student, who was not identified by police, is facing school disciplinary charges.
Stone was arrested by Cincinnati police on Wednesday and has been lodged in the Hamilton County Jail in Cincinnati on a $500,000 bond.

Teenager charged with murder after high-speed chase www.privateofficer.com

Teenager charged with murder after high-speed chase http://www.privateofficer.com

Mobile AL NOV 15 2008
mobilepressregister.com

The driver of the stolen vehicle that crashed and killed two teens during a police chase Tuesday has been charged with two counts of murder, Mobile police said Friday.
Nineteen-year-old Jacob Michael Cartee also faces charges of first-degree assault and first-degree receiving stolen property.
On Thursday, Cartee blamed police for the crash that killed his 17-year-old half brother, Aaron Blake Cartee, and 18-year-old Richard Hamilton. A 15-year-old boy, whom police have declined to name, was also injured in the wreck.

They were chasing the wrong car in the first place,” Cartee said Thursday from his hospital bed.
The chase began at about 9:14 p.m. Tuesday near Schillinger and Cottage Hill roads, when police spotted the car Cartee was driving — a red Mustang convertible — that resembled a car involved in an assault earlier that day.
Police chased the car in excess of 80 mph, police spokesman Sgt. Charles Bagsby said, and the chase ended when Cartee crashed the car, flipping it several times, on Cody Road just north of Grelot Road. None of the occupants wore seat belts, according to police.
Aaron Cartee was pronounced dead at the scene, police said, while Hamilton and the 15-year-old were airlifted to the University of South Alabama Medical Cen ter. Hamilton died Thursday.
Bagsby said that he could not release the condition of the 15-year-old Friday.
Authorities confirmed Wednesday that the car Cartee was driving was not the same one they were looking for. However, Bagsby said that the Mustang had been reported stolen earlier on the day of the wreck.
Bagsby said that police are still investigating to find out if Cartee was the one who stole the car. Additional charges could be pending, he said.
Cartee was arrested at about 1:30 p.m. Friday at the intersection of Three Notch Road and U.S. 90, Bagsby said. He elaborated only by saying, “that is where the investigation led police.”
Cartee was in USA Medical Center as of Thursday afternoon.
Nicki Patterson, chief assistant district attorney, said Thursday that when someone is killed in a wreck where the driver is attempting to flee from police, the accident can constitute a homicide.
“We have a tragedy that has unfolded before our eyes that didn’t need to occur,” Mobile County District Attorney John Tyson Jr. said. “The simple way to avoid this is, when the police try to pull you over, stop. It would have been so easy just to stop and we wouldn’t have had to do all this.”
Bagsby said that Cartee was expected to be booked into the Mobile County Metro Jail later Friday night.
Mobile County court records show that Cartee was arrested Sept. 14 on a first-degree theft of property charge, as well as on June 5 on a first-degree receiving stolen property charge.
